INSTITUTIONS OF EMINENCE “WHAT ARE THEY“

These Institutions would be given significant autonomy in operations.

They are free from setting their own curriculum and recruiting foreign faculty to entering academic tie-ups.

These Institutions shall also be provided with the government funding for infrastructural development.

WHY?

Government wants us and our coming generations to imbibe world class education.

1Since the best Indian academic institutions did not make it to the lists of top ranked global universities.

2In order to produce enough cutting-edge research, the government decided that something needed to be done.

3The ultimate objective is for these Institutions of Eminence to acquire global standing in a few years.

ØThe target began last year(2017) with the University Grants Commission tasked with selecting 10 government universities and 10 private ones.

ØInstitutes that found a place among the top 50 in the (NIRF) or those figuring in the top 500 in certain reputed international ratings were eligible to apply.

Ø Six Institutions were selected-Ø3 public (Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, IIT Bombay

and IIT Delhi) Ø3 private (BITS Pilani, Manipal Academy of Higher Education

and the proposed Jio Institute).
