From the Principal

A Caring Community

One of the great strengths of Randwick Boys’ High School is its

commitment to the well-being of its students. This was evident

again this week.

It is a sad statistic that young men between the ages of 15 and 24

are significantly over-represented in suicide statistics. It is a tragic

toll and one we, as a community, need to find a way to reduce.

RUOK Day is one initiative that our

school has embraced to support our

young men. On Thursday, we held

RUOK Day with a number of

activities to encourage

boys to look out for their

mates, to ask: “Are you

ok?” Information about

support, including from

Beyond Blue, is always

made available to our

students and it is

highlighted on the day.

Our commitment to RUOK

Day is a commitment to

guiding our young men to success not only

in their own lives but also as caring

individuals who look out for their mates.

Ms Pappin and the Welfare Team have

spearheaded this initiative and I am grateful

for the tremendous work they have done to

promote awareness of this important day

and the terrible statistic it addresses.

End of Term

This will be the last newsletter for Term 3. I would like to wish

everyone a safe and restful holiday. In particular, I would like to

wish the students of Year 12 and their parents all the best in the

coming weeks as they make their final

preparations for the HSC. These young men

have ended their careers with us earning the

respect and admiration of their teachers. I will

have more to say about them at their

Presentation Evening next Thursday, but I

know that we all have very high hopes of them.

SPORT AFTERNOON – 11 SEPTEMBER

****** WATERPOLO – 04 SEPTEMBER

Under 14s: LOST 4 -5 Man of the Match: Scott Dyson ‘Scored all 4 goals, dominated the game’. Under 15s: WON 6-5 Man of the Match: Fletcher Dixon ‘Scored 2 goals, caused problems all game for opposition on left flank’. Open 2nd Grade: LOST 6-1 Man of the Match: Kento Farbeh 'Great effort in goals, played the entire match' Water-polo Report On Wednesday, the 2013-14 Waterpolo season got off to a swimming start. The boys, after a long pre-season, displayed a positive attitude in all the three games. The Open 2nds, against a superb opposition, struck early with a great goal from heavy-weight attacking weapon, Ozcan Demir. This was backed up by a Man of the Match effort in goals from Kento Farbeh. Unfortunately, unable to penetrate the fortress like defence of the opposition, the boys went down 6-1. The under 15s participated in an epic encounter against arch-rivals, and last year's premiers, Epping. Randwick took the lead only to have Epping claw their way back into the game. The extraordinarily fast Jake Rowlands dominated the opposition during the first two quarters, swimming the ball deep into the Epping half on several occasions. This raiding served to weaken Epping. Capitalising on this, Hamish Evans marshalled his troops for a great defensive effort, as well scoring a true Captain's goal; a solo effort down the centre of the pool. After an even 4th quarter, the boys emerged victorious 6-5. A fine effort! Special mention must go to Man of the Match Fletcher Dixon who, along with two goals, caused problems all game down the left flank. The future of the sport at RBHS was on display with the Under 14 playing their first game for the school. Captain, and rep player, Scott Dyson showed his brilliance with 4 goals. For many of the team, this was their first competitive game. With no reserves the boys held the opposition to 5-4, only losing in the dying minutes of the game. A gallant effort! YEAR 7 DESIGN TECHNOLOGY – FOOD PRODUCTS

Mrs Leadbetter’s Year 7 Food Technology’s had two design briefs

this term, one of which was to design a recipe for chocolate chip

cookies, manufacture the cookies, then design and produce

packaging for their product. When the tasks were completed they

had to style the product using various props and photograph their

products. Below are a few examples of students work.

Multicultural Playwright Program.

SIMON ZHANG is the proud composer of "Dead For Life".

Simon is a Year 11 student at Randwick Boys' High School and has gone far out of his comfort zone for this Multicultural Playwright Program. In the three years since his arrival in Australia from his homeland of China, Simon has thoroughly learned our language and much about our culture while preserving his inner Chinese soul. He has quickly learned the basics of the

playwright's craft; made all the more special because he has no recollections of having been exposed to the theatre at any time. Simon does acknowledge that the inspiration for his play originated in a Chinese comedy sketch which he had enjoyed watching on TV some years ago. Nevertheless, the themes presented in "Dead For Life" are perennial and universal. PARTICIPANTS: COMPOSER/ DIRECTOR: Simon Zhang (Yr 11) CAST: Rob Hartley (Y 11) Zac Goldfinch (Y 10) Ricard Grace (Y 10)
