If you have feeders, please keep them clean and full. Continue to follow watering restrictions, as directed by Cedar Park. It’s time to purchase and plant your fall/winter annuals. Good choices are pansies, violas, snapdragons, dianthus, etc.. Clean and sharpen hand tools. Apply a light coat of oil on metal surfaces to prevent rusting, before storing for winter. For those wanting a green winter lawn, now is the time to sow winter rye grass. Use 8-10 pounds per 1000 sq. ft. Fertilize your lawn with a light application of a 3-1-2 fertilizer. Also add compost to your garden beds and re-mulch for winter protection. REMINDER: If you plan to make major landscape changes, you are required to submit a request to the Architectural Review Committee. Happy Gardening Byron Stephens Landscape Committee PETS CORNER Is Only Exercise Enough for Your Dog? You are a great doggy parent because you feed good nutritious food, take your doggy friend to the vet when needed and you take a daily walk. Is that enough to make sure that he is content and happy? It is for some, but many really would thrive and benefit from additional “mental stimulation activities.” What is that you ask? It’s a great way to keep your dog busy and give you a little break. Some very easy ways to create mental stimulation for your dog is to hide his food around the house where he has to find it (if more than 1 dog is in the home, only do this is you are confident that there will not be any problems between them). Place a handful of food under a bucket, or hide food in a blanket in between the folds so that he has to smell and search for it. Have you ever seen a treat ball? Dogs love to work, especially when food is involved. Place a portion of the food in a treat ball and watch them go! Here is a great article from Dr. Dodman that explains in detail how important mental stimulation is: MENTAL STIMULATION FOR YOUR DOG By: Dr. Nicholas Dodman Toys and Games It has been said that dogs have the mental age of children between 3 and 5 years of age and, like children, thrive on fun and games. Good toys include those that can be chewed without fragmenting; ones that can be chased; ones that distribute food or scents; and ones that can be tugged or pulled around. Good games to play with dogs include fetch, Frisbee, and hide-and-seek. Not-so-good games include roughhousing and tug-of-war. Toys that the dog can play with when you are otherwise occupied, or when he is alone, are particularly important. Putting any old toy down on such occasions will often not work to resolve separation distress or boredom. Owners should research novel, more appealing toys and provide them on rotation as they depart - enhancing them, if necessary, with food or attractive scents e.g. hunting lure scents, (Continued on Page 2)

This year, over 230,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Approximately 1 in 8 American women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. But if you’re a woman age 40 or older, an annual screening mammogram provides the critical early detection you need.

The Austin Radiological Association has a team of radiologists who specialize in the early detection of breast cancer, with the latest in breast-imaging technology. For your health and for the health of the women you love, schedule a screening mammogram by calling (512) 453-6100, or visit us online at www.ausrad.com/webscheduling.
