1. History and Objective:
Swami Vivekananda wanted to rehabilitate thepast glories of our motherland through an educationwhich would not merely combine in it the bestelements of Eastern and Western culture but wouldat the same time hold aloft the Indian ideals ofdevotion, wisdom and morality so that it might meetthe national temperament at every point. Realeducation, he said, was that which enabled a personto stand on his own legs and helped him to manifestthe perfection already in him by a harmoniousdevelopment of his head, hand and heart.
With a view to giving shape to Swamiji’scomprehensive scheme of education, the authoritiesof the Ramakrishna Mission started theVidyamandira as an Intermediate Arts College in1941 under the auspices of Saradapitha, a branchof the Mission. The college was upgraded to athree-year degree college with effect from July1960. Post-graduate teaching was introduced fromthe academic session 2006-07.
In 2010 the University Grants Commissionconferred the status of ‘Autonomy’ to the institutionfor five years. To commemorate the 150th birthanniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the collegestarted ‘Swami Vivekananda Research Centre’which has been given the extension of affiliationby Calcutta University in September 2013. 12. Hostel:
The Vidyamandira being a wholly residential college, its hostels form an integral partin the scheme of an all-round education imparted by it. They are run on the principles ofthe ancient Gurukula and as such they pay special attention to the training of those aspectsof a boy’s personality that would enable him to flower into a ‘full man’.
Resident superintendents who are monastic members of the Ramakrishna Orderare in charge of the hostels. At present there are six hostels or bhavans— Vinay Bhavan,Vidya Bhavan, Shraddha Bhavan, Sree Bhavan, Vivek Bhavan and Shanti Bhavan. Thetotal accommodation in the six hostels is approximately 650. The Principal/ Vice-Principal
17
will decide at the beginning of each session in which hostel a boy will be put up. The allotmentof rooms and seats is made according to the discretion of the superintendents. The transferof a student from one hostel to another will require the permission of the Principal/ Vice-Principal.
Hostel facilities:
l Boarders will be supplied with bedsteads and tables. They must bring their ownbedding (including bed, bed-sheet, bed-cover, table-cloth and mosquito curtain)and also bring with them a plate, a glass, a cup, three sets of college uniform, two sets ofwhite dhoti & panjabi and other articles of use which should be new as far as possible.Every boarder is also expected to have undergone a course of tetanus toxoide.Students carrying any chronic illness must report the same before admission to thecollege. Seats at the hostel must not be changed, nor the furniture removed without thepermission of the Hostel Superintendent. Any damage done to the fittings or furniture willincur fines.l Boarders must keep their own rooms perfectly clean and their things decently
arranged. Besides, they are to wash their own utensils after meals and tiffin and keep themin their proper places.l All our hostel rooms have been provided with tubelights and fans. Two stand-by
generators are available in case of power-cuts. No lanterns/torches must be used for late-night study after 11 pm, however.l For the benefit of our boarders, each hostel has been provided with three telephones
which may be used with a prepaid ‘Cash Card’ for outgoing & incoming calls.l A public booth with outgoing telephone facilities has been set up within the campus.
This remains open from 9 am to 6 pm and again from 9 pm to 9.45 pm.l Purified drinking water is available at all the hostels. Solar water heating apparatuses
have been installed out of UGC funds. Hence hot water will be available throughout theyear for the use of students.l A boy’s store, where boys can purchase items of daily use, operates within the college
premises.l A saloon functions in the hostel campus.l A photocopier unit, where students and staff can get their relevant materials ‘xeroxed’
on payment of requisite charges is also operative.l A canteen for students, teachers and staff of vidyamandira is being operated within
the campus.
13. Co-curricular Activities:
In addition to academic education, co-curricular activities form and important aspectof student-training in Vidyamandira. This blend of academic and non-academic activitieshelp in the harmonious development of head, hand and heart.
18
The co-curricular activities may briefly be classified as below:
(a) Physical:
Vidyamandira has rich facilities for sports and games as well as athletics. It has alarge playground which is used for football, cricket, volleyball and other athletic events. Awell-equipped multigym has been set up with modern facilities. The trainer at the multigymalso teaches the boys yogasanas. In addition to these, the boys play indoor games likecarom and table tennis. Annual athletics meet is held regularly and the successful competitorsare awarded prizes and trophies.
A separate unit of the senior NCC (National Cadet Corps) has been in existence inthe Vidyamandira since August 1959. There is an arrangement for imparting training to thecadets within the campus of the college under the able supervision of monastic membersand trained officers. One of our teachers is the ANO (Associate NCC Officer) of theVidyamandira NCC Unit. It is to be noted that periodical camp life forms an essential partof NCC training.
An NSS (National Service Scheme) unit started functioning from June 1970. The unitprovides scope for the student-volunteers to participate in such social works as environmentalcleaning, running literacy centre for the illiterate and coaching classes for poor school boysof the locality, relief work, gardening, etc. Vidyamandira students reaches out to poor and needy students of the locality and serve them with study-materials under ‘BrabmanandaBook Bank’ scheme.
First year degree students must compulsorily take part either in the NCC (NationalCadet Corps) or the NSS (National Social Service). Interested students of other years arealso encouraged to participate.
(b) Cultural & Intellectual:
A college magazine named ‘VIDYAMANDIRA PATRIKA’ is published annually in co-operation with the boys. A wall-magazine is also periodically brought out from the collegeunder the name of ‘Shraddha’ with the help of the students. Besides this, wall-magazinesare brought out by the different hostels and departments. Occasionally, bulletins andperiodicals are published by different departments. Students take part in college annualcultural competitions such as extempore speech, debate, quiz, music, drama, drawing, recitation etc. These help them to develop their aesthetic faculties. Prizes are awarded forgood performance in these competitions. To widen their outlook on life and stimulate theirintellectual curiosity, they are taken out on excursions to various centres of religious, culturalor academic interest on occasions. Weekly seminars/discussions by eminent scholars ontopics of contemporary interest are a regular feature of the intellectual life of the college.
A forum for reading poems and discussions on related topics of literature has beenintroduced under the title ‘Kabitar Adda’.
Students participate in off-campus cultural and other co-curricular competitionsregularly.
