Psalm 46:11“The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

We have read Psalm 46 several times this school year. Just as we began the yearwith this psalm, we will conclude the year with this psalm. We remember that thiswas a favorite psalm of Martin Luther during the time of the Reformation. MartinLuther trusted that God would keep him safe. Psalm 46 describes some sceneswhere one may not feel safe: waters roaring, mountains trembling, nations raging, wars and chariots of fire. Some of these scenes still frighten us. Storms andearthquakes still happen. We watch the news and see wars and disagreements. The sinful world is a frightening place.

God’s presence drives away our fears. The resurrected Jesus comes to thefrightened disciples and says, “Peace be with you.” Many times God’s Word sharesthe message, “Fear not.” The God of Jacob, the God of the Old Testament writersof the Psalms, is still with us. The resurrected Jesus leaves His disciples and us withthe promise, “I am with you always.”

Remember the safe places? Psalm 46 describes our God as a “fortress.” A fortresswas a safe place — often high on a hill with high and strong walls. The king andthose behind the fortress were safe from the enemy. Our God is a “mightyfortress.” He is a safe place. He brings us to the safety of His Word. He brings us tothe safety of His Church. Be safe in Jesus’ name.
