It seems like every year it just gets better and better the way council 2546 honors the birth of our nation with some good ole fash- ioned patriotic celebrating. From the hamburgers and hot dogs cooked by GK Ed Rogosich along with some help from our newest PGK Jim Humphrys to the fireworks grand finale and everything else in between, a grand time was had by all. Thanks to brother D.J. Pavik for sup- plying the slip and slide for the kids, it was in use all day....even during the brief rain! Much thanks to the set up crews who moved tables, chairs and cleaned up. Not enough can be said about all who helped clean up afterwards.....all of you know who are you are and there are just too many to name you all. Thanks to my Pyro crew and to Charlie Dobbins for the music. A real big thank you to all the raffle ticket sellers....you guys rock. Greetings Brother Knights,

As you can see on pages 8 and 9 I have included a three month calendar as there are many important dates to remember. Grand Knight Ed Rogosich called for and held a Program Directors meeting on July 19th to plan events, socials and fundraisers for the upcoming year. The soul purpose was to keep you, our members, more aware so that you can stay or become more involved. The importance of communication is vital for any organization to reach its goals and remain suc-cessful and we as Knights are no different. The meeting lasted about 4 1/2 hours and was attended by about 15 Officers and Directors. It was put together very well as DGK Michael Costanza assisted the Grand Knight in the preparation, in-cluding lunch. Your Grand Knight, Ed Rogosich, along with the Officers and Directors are committed to keeping us all abreast of what’s on the horizon not only at the Council level, but in the Church and Community as well. With input, ideas and suggestions coming from all in attendance, topics such as new and existing fund raisers, socials and council events were discussed and noted on huge 12 month calendar. These events will posted to the website calendar as well as

Grand Knights Report Brothers All,

It's that time of the year again. Yearly dues notices have been mailed out. BUT, please know and understand that it is my belief that CHARITY (being one of our princi-pals) starts with our brothers. No one brother should let his membership lapse because yearly dues are a burden or hardship. Your Knight Brothers are here to support you and we need all to contribute with their talents and time so that we may solidly support of Bishops, Clergy, charities and churches. Feel free to contact me person-ally with any concerns which will be kept private.

Now that I've been Grand Knight officially for all of ten days, I feel like I've been involved in more within those ten days than I had been for ten months as Deputy Grand Knight. This leads me to give a big thanks to Jim Humphry's for his year of service and I now appreciate all that he has done and I know my job last year was easier because of his dedication. Michael Costanzo, you will not have it that easy. I need help.

Our deepest condolences go out to the Jim Steffel family with his recent passing. Jim was a stalwart of the Knights and of this council. Please say a prayer for the repose of his soul. I'm sure he is in heaven fishing all day and catching big ones.

NC Bishops Unite to Defend Human Life and the Sanctity of Marriage

Most Reverend Bishop Peter Jugis (Diocese of Charlotte) and Bishop Michael Burbidge (Diocese of Raleigh) announced the formation of a holy coalition called CatholicVoiceNC.org during a press conference outside the Legislative Building in downtown Raleigh. This website is designed to send out legislative alerts to over 800,000 Catholics in NC. Bishop Burbidge described how legislation moves so quickly that bills can be presented and voted on before anyone knows about. As responsible citizens, Catholic citizens, we have the right and holy obligation to work for just laws that are consistent with our Catholic faith. Our faith is not forbidden in the public arena, it must inform us and empower us to act.

The Marriage Amendment (Our Faithful Bishops introduced this bill to clearly define marriage as “a union between one man and one woman”.

years. We insist it be voted by the people.

Biking to Build a Culture of Life

“The Church needs your energies, your enthusiasm, your youthful ideas, in order to make the Gospel of Life penetrate the fabric of society, transforming people's hearts and the structures of society in order to create a civilization of true justice and love.” ~Pope John Paul II- Denver 1993

The 2nd Annual Bike for Life Pilgrimage will spin from August 8th -16th and we’ll cycle from Wilmington to Raleigh and end in DC at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Here we will converge with many other groups like the Missionaries of the Eucharist and Crossroads. Joining us on their bikes and in full habit are three Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (www.franciscanfriars.com/) and Fr. Peter West of the Priests for Life (www.priestsforlife.org). This year’s theme is “Speaking for Those Who Have No Voice” and it’s mission is to encourage the faithful to live out their vocations in the light of the Gospel of Life. There will be daily Mass, Holy Hours, and talks on building the Culture of Life. See the events schedule at www.BikeForLifePilgrimage.com. All are invited. The pilgrimage begins on August 8th 7:30 am with Mass at the NCSU Doggett Center (Catholic Student Center). The Doggett Center was the home of Bishop Waters, the 3rd Bishop of Raleigh. “Equal rights are accorded, therefore, to every race . . . and within the church building itself everyone is given the privilege to sit or kneel wherever he desires . . . I am not unmindful, as a Southerner, of the force of this virus of prejudice among some persons in the South, as well as in the North. I know, however, that there is a cure for this virus, and that is our faith.” - Bishop Waters. Following Mass, Msgr. Hadden will speak about his experiences s during desegregation of Catholic Churches in the south. During the journey we will look back at other unique times and individuals of our Catholic History. These periods of history shared many common acts and attitudes. While the sanctity and dignity of innocent human life is disregarded, too many people were silent. The Holy Father has challenged us to recapture the Catholic vision of reality in America to return to truth and moral principals for the nation’s life and to secure our democratic future. In his address at the White House Pope Benedict XVI stated,

“The framers of this nation’s founding documents drew upon this conviction when they proclaimed the “self-evident truth” that all men are created equal and endowed with inalienable rights grounded in the laws of nature and of nature’s God. The course of American history demonstrates the difficulties, the struggles, and the great intellectual and moral resolve which were demanded to shape a society which faithfully embodied these noble principles. In that process, which forged the soul of the nation, religious beliefs were a constant inspiration and driving force, as for example in the struggle against slavery and in the civil rights movement. In our time too, particularly in moments of crisis, Americans continue to find their strength in a commitment to this patrimony of shared ideals and aspirations and… Democracy can only flourish, as your founding fathers realized, when political leaders and those whom they represent are guided by truth and bring the wisdom born of firm moral principle to decisions affecting the life and future of the nation.”

1. During the battle for Okinawa, fought from April-June 1945, a lot of Kamikaze pilots missed their targets of U.S. ships and crashed harmlessly into the sea. The reason being was that the night before their mission, ceremonies were held for them and much Sake (Japanese wine) was consumed by the pilots. So, when they took off the next morning for their mission, they were drunk and missed their targets.

2. Of the 6,670 paratroopers of the 101st airborne that jumped in the early hours of June 6th 1944, only 2000 were not killed or wounded when the battle of Normandy ended in mid-July.

3. The air battle over the Philippine sea fought on June 19, 1944 just about destroyed Japanese air power. The Japanese lost 378 planes while the Americans lost just 23. the U.S. Navy pilots named this battle “The Marianas Turkey shoot.”

4. Mother’s Cross was a Nazi medal given to German women to encourage them to have more children for the father-land. The medal came in three grades: Bronze for 5 kids, silver for 6 or 7 kids and gold for 8 or more. It was every year on August 12th, the birthday of Hitler’s mother. The medal was started in 1938.

5. On December 7th 1941, Pearl harbor was not the only target the Japanese attacked. They also attacked and captured Wake Island. Only 524 Americans defended the island and killed over 5000 Japanese before they were over-whelmed.

6. When the Allies took off to bomb the oil fields in Ploesti, Romania in August, 1943, the Germans had intercepted the Allies radio transmissions and were waiting for them. Of the 177 Allied bombers on the raid, 108 were shot down with the loss of 579 Allied airmen.

7. The movie “PT 109” starring actor cliff Robertson was about President Kennedy’s war experience. The movie was released in 1963, the same year Kennedy was assassinated. Robertson was rejected for service because of poor eye-sight.

8. Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s minister of propaganda said of the battle for Russia, “We cannot stand such a drain for long. If it continues, we will slowly bleed to death in the east.” He was right, the Germans did bleed to death in Rus-sia.

9. Linz was the Austrian city where Hitler was born. He intended to make it the new capital of the German Reich after the war. So much for the new German capital.

10. London was the selected sight for the 1944 Olympic games which, as we know, never took place. The reason WW II.

COLUMBUS CLUB REPORT:

Our annual Columbus club meeting and elections were held on Sunday, July 13th and the attendance was minimal. Be-sides the annual report on profit/loss and what the board accomplished last year, elections were held for two vacant spots. Brothers Tony Infantino and Tom Monck were unanimously voted in for another term and will continue in their previous roles as secretary and trustee. In addition two board members have switched positions, which was voted on and approved unanimously. Rich Ferraro PGK is now President and Jerry Santoro PGK is now Vice President. The board would like to thank all who attended and looks forward to another prosperous year. In doing so we look to you, the members, for your support and guidance. Every member of Council 2546 is a member of the Columbus Club and should participate and help in keeping our council strong and vibrant. There is still a lot of work to be done and we need you, your ideas, and your suggestions. This is your Columbus Club....are you ready to take ownership?

Council Report

We are still seeking out someone to take over as Council Director and anybody who feels they have the desire to step up should contact the Grand Knight as soon as possi-ble. The Council Director has the task of planning all Council events, such as the Christmas party, Super Bowl party and all other Council events. It is a position that does require some planning and hard work, but the outcome usually outweighs the ef-fort.

As of right now there are several Council events happening in the coming months. Please check the calendars for time and dates or contact the Grand Knight for more information. You may also contact the newsletter editor, Rich Ferraro for informa-tion as well. As always, we look forward to seeing all of you at our Council socials and events. Thank You
