Interbike 2011 Coverage

Raleigh Furley A city bike inspired by cross, the singlespeed Furley (as in Mr. Furley of Three's Com-pany) brings simple, but smart styling to a lock-it-anywhere commuter that can double as a cross racer. With workaday Avenir bits and pieces, Tektro/Promax disc brakes, and all-business wheels, this bike is unabashedly about utility. Case in point: the 39x18 gearing, which should get you any-where in town, but not especially fast. Yet the pumpkin-orange frame and matching highlights on the wheels and overall hard-wearing attitude will definitely appeal to the cool kids, as evidenced by the ring of gawkers constantly gathered around it at Interbike. And the rear derailleur hanger gives the option of gears should you decide to do so later. Alternatively, the analogous Roper packs a Shimano 105 drivetrain into a more subdued gray version.

The racier Militus, above, uses their Direct Connect Evolution frame where the head- and downtubes are molded as one piece and the chainstay/bb are molded as one piece. The rest of the carbon tubes are cus-tom “drawn” according to size of bike then cut and mitered to the frame. Raleigh’s marketing guy Brian says “this allows us to custom tune each ride to ensure the ride qualites are the same from the smallest to the largest frame we make.”

Sales Dept. RestructureRaleigh America has restructured its IBD sales team to better respond to the unique regional needs of its dealers.

At Raleigh America’s dealer meeting in July, President Steve Meineke stated, “Raleigh will help facilitate the connection between the local rider, the local dealer, and local events. This is our mission heading into 2012 and beyond.”

To deepen it connections on a regional and local level, the sales team was restructured this month as Raleigh EAST and Raleigh WEST. Two new senior sales management positions – East and West Sales Directors – were created to manage the organization. George Simone and Jim Holleman have been promoted to East and West Coast Sales Directors respectively.

“Our goal is to move our sales leadership out of the office and into the field, where the action is happening. We need to be able to make decisions quickly, and to understand the specific needs of different markets. Therefore we needed senior management in the field with a broader amount of latitude to make decisions quickly with a strong understanding of their markets” Meineke said. “We are fortunate that we already had two great leaders in the organization in George and Jim who can take on this responsibility and push the Raleigh brand to the next level.”

George Simone previously served as Raleigh’s Regional Manager for the East Coast and has been in the bicycle industry for over 30 years. He has worked in virtually every aspect of the industry including ownership of a retail bicycle business and as a road sales representative in addition to holding various management positions both in sales and business development.

Raleigh x BikeMSNovember 9, 2011 -- New York, NY and Kent, WA – Bike MS, the largest charity cycling series in the country with 100 events nationwide, and Raleigh, a bicycle brand synonymous with quality and community, today announced that they are teaming up to form a unique part-nership and cycling program in 2012. Raleigh America is excited to announce that it will be presenting its 2013 product launch in conjunction with the annual DealerCamp event this coming July. While Raleigh has previ-ously invited its top dealers to attend the unveiling locally in Washington, it believes that syncing schedules with the already popular DealerCamp event will lighten the travel load for busy retailers during their sales season.

At DealerCamp, retailers will have the chance to meet with Raleigh product and marketing team as well as sales representatives to test ride and discuss new bikes before committing to yearly orders. What’s more, DealerCamp will host Raleigh’s second annual Midsummer Night’s Cyclocross Classic, which promises racers prestigious prize packages and new team positions that are up for grabs in 2012.

“The Deer Valley venue is spectacular, and the timing really works to effectively launch our bicycles to a wide range of dealers and the cycling industry as a whole,” said Raleigh VP of Product & Marketing, Chris Speyer. We will have a preview event for our top dealers two days prior to the start of DealerCamp, and the bikes will be showcased for public viewing throughout the rest of the show."

This past Sunday marked the 10th Anniversary of The 9.11 Attack on New York City’s World Trade Towers. Everybody has their way of remembering and honoring this great loss many New Yorkers suffered. Myself and 35 friends gathered for the 2nd Annual 100 Mile Bicycle Ride. We met up in the LES and then had a sorta plan mapped out all over Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Manhat-tan ( Sorry Staten Island ). Riding in and out of traffic with such a powerful and enthusiastic crew was exhilarating. We hit up some of the best sites and tastes New York has to offer. I would like to congratulate all who participated in the ride and hope to see you on the bike path and city streets soon. And a big thanks to Raleigh Cycles for the support!

The Review: After 6 weeks of use, my panniers were still in great shape! No tears in the material, and most importantly, no leaks! They were waterproof throughout the entire trip, for the most part. Though I had no leaks, the bottom of the bag is made of a different material than the sides, and after hours of riding in the rain, that part did get a little saturated. However, I don’t fault Avenir for this- it was a LOT of rain. Only on 2 days of our entire trip did I have mildly damp panniers. Avenir also makes a seatbag and handlebar bag of the same material, and I’d have full confidence that those would be waterproof enough

Some ‘cross racers may think this is too nice of a bike to be a singlespeed, but I came to appreciate the Hodala SSCX for exactly that reason, even when I raced against folks on chain-driven bikes. Raleigh built the bike around the redesigned Gates CenterTrack Carbon Belt Drive System, a carbon-strand belt and cog that replaces your standard drivetrain. The weight savings are significant: The belt and two sprockets weigh less than a standard chain by itself.
