Trash dumps on vacant plots: residents peeved to the hiltThe indiscriminate dumping of garbage on vacant plots in Rajajinagar is a cause of worry for the residents. West of Chord Road in Rajajinagar is one of the oldest lanes in the city and the vacant plots on this road are a cause of concern for the residents. With residents indiscriminately dumping waste on vacant sites, heaps of garbage is dotting this highly populated area. These dumping yards have now become a shelter for stray pigs, dogs and dangerous reptiles. People often purchase land and leave it idle for years until they get a good price to sell in the market. Many such plots are now slowly turning into mini dump yards in the locality. Ramya, a resident said, "Though the BBMP cleans garbage from every nook and corner of the ward, few irresponsible residents are still dumping garbage on empty sites. People and residential forums should co-operate with the authorities and keep all the vacant plots and layout clean. Mayuri, a resident of WC Road, said that vacant plots filled with garbage had not only become an eyesore but also foul smell emanating from such plots made life a living hell for people. He added, These sites have become breeding ground for mosquitoes. The corporation must take action against owners if the sites are not kept clean. Residents who dump garbage on vacant plots must be severely dealt with. When Cityplus tried speaking to area health inspector, he brushed away the issue by saying, We are cleaning the garbage every day but residents have to be more responsible and stop throwing garbage on vacant plots. Gayatri, another resident lamented, We are having a tough time with these empty plots. On one side, metro construction has robbed our peace of mind, on the other side, there is no footpath to walk because they have dumped all construction materials on the footpath. And now, these vacant sites are filled with garbage and this is creating major problem to us. For the last two days, it is raining heavily and the garbage filled plots are rotting with foul smell. The number of street dogs and stray pigs is on the rise. Residents must understand that it affects our health. Authorities do not clean the empty sites and finding the plot owners is a difficult task. So it is the responsibility of every individual in the area to take an initiative and make sure that they do not dump waste on vacant plots.

Fallen pole perturbs pedestrians

Modi Road in Rajaji Nagar is one of the busy roads as it is a junction where traffic comes from many a direction. The road has footpaths on both sides for pedestrians use. Still pedestrians face a major problem here.On one of the pavements, beautiful tile laying work is in progress at one end, while on the other end a big streetlight pole has been lying fallen. The streetlight pole is causing hurdle for the footpath users and many of them have received injuries because of its presence. Ramya, a resident says, "This pole has been lying here for the past three to four months now. And nobody even tries to remove this to a corner. The other day I was walking on this footpath. Though I was aware that this pole was lying down here, I completely forgot about it in my hurry and got badly hurt in my leg. This is not a small issue because footpath is made for pedestrians and here it is of no help". Amulya, a resident says, The main problem is that the concerned authorities who have to take care of this issue and make a way for pedestrians, are not really bothered for they do not use this footpath. They think that, this is just a street pole and public wont have any problem with it. But they must come and see here, I have seen many aged and children have unknowingly hurt their legs while walking here. Sometimes this footpath will be too crowded and you really dont see down and walk. And you end up hurting yourself". Harish, a pedestrian says, This has been lying here for the past four months now. And nobody has paid any attention to this fallen pole as nobody has complained about. It is true that though we complain, the authorities do not take our complaints seriously. Especially, during night hours one should be careful walking on this footpath as this pole has fallen here. At least the concerned authorities can do something regarding this and help the pedestrians walk freely on this footpath".

Pavements turn into open toiletsPedestrians are already having a tough time at the WC Road Rajajinagar, as there is metro construction going on. The metro work has put lives of pedestrians in total disarray. Also pavements meant for them in the nearby areas are more than garbage dumping place where people urinate in open without any qualm. Traffic is extremely heavy in the region and footpaths are the only refuge for pedestrians. As a result of these stinking obstructions on footpaths deter pedestrians from using them. To take this road the pedestrians are forced to walk in the road endangering their lives. The prevailing horrible situation of footpath with garbage and constant its use as open public toilet is really an issue which needs to be addressed at the earliest. Open urination on footpath is a very bad practice and people must not resort to this uncivilized act. Ujwala, a student says, It is not about why don't men use public toilets, but it is about lack of civic sense." Ananya, a pedestrian says, It is very bad that people urinate and throw garbage on this footpath. First of all, this road is very busy and walking or crossing the road here is dangerous proposition. This is the only footpath which pedestrians use for walking. On the other side of this road there is no footpath at all. The metro workers have dumped all mud in big heaps and construction materials. And this

footpath, nobody likes to walk. As a result, we have to walk on the main road itself". Amrutha, a resident of Chord Road says, Everywhere its the same problem. Either there wont be a footpath, or if there is one men folk use it for easing them. This is the main road and they dont feel ashamed at all while urinating in open. You just cannot walk on this footpath it stinks so badly. Footpaths are made for pedestrians to walk on it and to avoid walking on the roads, people should understand it first. And there are public toilets. They must make use of it". Amar, a commuter says, I travel on this road every day. And I see men urinating on this footpath without any shame or hesitation. When women and children pass by from this place they feel so bad about this practice. What lesson will the children take from this? Very recently an incident took place here; a group of students were walking on this main road as pavement was all plastics and other waste materials drenched with stinking urine. Though they walk by the side of the road, the traffic is too heavy on the road. One of the girl students had almost met with an accident with a two-wheeler. When Cityplus tried contacting area health inspector, he was unavailable for comments. It is high time that the cleaning operation is taken and a strict vigil is kept on people who resort to urination here. Whosoever does create nuisance by throwing garbage and use the place as public convenience here should be refrained and proper action is taken against him.

Walkway worriesWalking down the street is a risky affair for the people going towards Yeshwanthpur on Dr Rajkumar Road. Whatever little footpath is available, it has been leisurely occupied by huge water pipes and heap of mud. The missing slabs are also a cause of concern for pedestrians. While the vehicles zoom their way out on the busy road, the walkers run for their lives in the absence of a clear walking path. A speeding bus rushing towards you honks an annoying horn. Taken aback by the sudden speed and noise, you try to step aside, only to bump on water pipes and mud heaps. Yes! Welcome to Dr Rajkumar Road in Rajajinagar, a pedestrian's living nightmare. Criss-crossing between high-speed vehicles opposite to Orion Mall has become a way of life for pedestrians as the footpath has been encroached upon by huge water pipes and mud heaps. Earlier, the pavement was in good condition but obstacles such as water pipes and mud heaps are causing lot of trouble to pedestrians. The first hurdle is, as soon as we take Dr Rajkumar road from Yeshwanthpur side and move little further, pedestrians encounter a pavement laden with huge unused water pipes. Amog, a student said, This road is dangerous for pedestrians as vehicles which take the bend whizz past pedestrians. The water pipes make it impossible for us to walk on the footpath. Madhu, another pedestrian said, The pavements become inaccessible for pedestrians. This is the main road and lots of people use this road. The footpaths are made for pedestrians to walk but here its just there serving no purpose. Huge water pipes have been lying on this footpath for many days. There is not even an inch of space to if one wants to even stand on this footpath. Its not water pipes only but even construction materials are dumped here. Further continued on the same footpath, another major problem that is adding to the misery is that there are no slabs to cover the footpath. Water drainage below the footpath is left uncovered and posing great threat to commuters. Parking of auto rickshaws on the pavement is another problem compelling walkers to get off the footpath. Raghu Shetty, an employee at a nearby firm said, "The entire footpath

has been encroached. We are not sure who have dumped the useless water pipes and sand on the pavement. While half of the footpath is dumped with waste materials, the other half of the footpath is just left uncovered. Children and elderly citizens often take this route and a chance of them falling in to this trap has become inevitable. Marred by such encroachments on the road, the residents near Dr Rajkumar are a harried lot. One such harried resident Mathew said, "I walk on this road everyday because my office is just at a walk-able distance from here. And I cannot explain how difficult it is to walk on this road. There are too many problems here. I request the concerned authorities to clear the footpath and cover it with slabs. It will be helpful for people. Renuka Priyamani, a regular visitor to Orion Mall said, "I live just few lanes away from Orion Mall. This is one of the busiest roads and it is very difficult to even cross this road. So when you cross the road and reach the other side of the road, you have no place to stand or walk on the footpath. Half of the footpath is taken away. We are forced to walk on the main road by risking our lives. On enquiring about the same issue to north zone, traffic police department, a senior traffic inspector, said, We were unaware about the situation. Soon, we will take a step to bring back the normalcy into the area. Considering that this is one of the busy junction in the area, the debris must be cleared and slabs must be replaced making way for the pedestrians to walk freely on the footpath.

Uneven manhole on road causes problemManholes on roads are an issue in every area as if these are not properly built or covered; these can prove a big nuisance for commuters and pedestrians. But the increase of manholes in Manjunath Nagar has become a main cause of concern. The BBMP is the sole authority to lay and maintain roads and manholes. It has to take better measures in providing better roads. They also have to ensure that all the manholes are covered and are in level with the roads to avoid inconvenience to people and prevent road mishaps. Manjunath Nagar is one of the busiest places situated in Rajajinagar. One of the roads in Manjunath Nagar is 4th Main, 1st Stage, 1st Phase, ward number 99. A manhole on this road though is covered, a part of its cover has popped out on the road creating an obstruction for pedestrians and commuters. Though the BBMP workers have covered the manhole they havent done the job properly. This manholes present condition is very dangerous as people may trip and fall. Even people riding twowheelers can easily lose their balance if they do not notice this manhole well in time. Sujata, a resident says, We do not know what to be done for this problem, as we are helpless. This is causing lot of problems for everyone who takes this road. When we walk, we usually dont look down and walk. And though the road is tarred and all whats the point if manhole is not placed properly? I have hurt my leg many a time walking on this road. And irony is that its in the centre of the road where three roads connect to this road. When vehicles come fast and take a turn the riders will surely fall without noticing this and this is very dangerous thing for road-users. Pankaja, a pedestrian says, It is as dangerous as leaving a manhole uncovered. Many two-wheeler riders fall here when they dont notice it. When the BBMP workers do road works, why dont they do it properly? This manhole is causing too many problems for people here. Many people take this road and there is a school also here, children walk on this road and they can fall and get hurt badly. This is really dangerous. I hope the concerned authority must do something for this issue and make this road safe for people to walk. When Cityplus tried speaking to BBMP assistant engineer Maheshwarappa regarding this issue, he

refused to answer this question and impolitely disconnected the call.

As protests get shriller, Congress list to get relookBANGALORE: With protests from ticket-aspirants in the Congress getting louder and uglier in Bangalore, it appears the party high command is likely to review its 'final' list. And the scene of action will shift to New Delhi on Thursday. Congress sources told TOI here on Wednesday that there was already a flare-up over mere speculation on names in the list. They fear the situation could get worse once the list is officially released. Apart from protests in districts, the resentment over "outsiders'' getting tickets in constituencies in Bangalore and imbalance in caste equations have ruffled feathers "The tussle among chief ministerial aspirants in the party is causing the problem. They want to ensure that their supporters get the most tickets. If Congress comes to power, the one who has the highest number of MLAs on his side can stake claim for the CM's post,'' a leader said. The Vokkaliga community is agitated that in Bangalore alone tickets had been given to four backward classes belonging to the Naidu community. According to the unofficial list, the community had been given tickets in Rajajinagar (Manjula Naidu), Rajarajeswarinagar (N Muniratna), Padmanabhanagar (Gurappa Naidu) and Chickpet (R V Devaraj). Among the youth, chances of Chetan Gowda, whose name was among the probables for Padmanabhanagar, appear bleak. KPCC president G Parameshwara is expected to go to New Delhi on Thursday, as the list which was to be announced on Wednesday has been delayed. Oscar Fernandes and Mallikarjun M Kharge have been asked to finetune the list again. The remaining 15-20 constituencies which were kept pending will be looked into after party president Sonia Gandhi returns from her overseas trip on April 6.

Rajajinagar jeweller hacked to death in shopBANGALORE: Shravan Kumar, 45, had just finished lunch when three men, in the guise of customers, entered his jewellery shop in Rajajinagar around 2.30pm. When they walked out, the jewellery shelves and cash box were empty, and Shravan Kumar lay slumped in a pool of blood. Outside, it was a regular Saturday afternoon. The Rajasthan-based jeweller's shop is located at a busy junction, diagonally opposite ESI Hospital in upmarket Rajajinagar. The ghastly killing came to light when Nityananda, his regular goldsmith, arrived at 3.15pm. "I was surprised to see the shutters half-open and the glass door closed. When I peeped through the window, I saw him lying near the cash box in a pool of blood," Nityananda told police. Preliminary investigations revealed the assailants had taken away the CCTV recorder box. "The culprits were smart enough to disconnect the CCTV equipment and take it. Now we're examining

traffic signal CCTV footage, around 50 metres from the shop," an officer said. "The cash box was empty and the assailants had taken away the items on display too. It is difficult to assess the value of the stolen goods. Our initial estimate is at least 2-3kg of gold jewellery was stolen. We will soon make an inventory. The assailants left behind only smaller items like bangles and earrings," a police officer said. Dinesh S, owner of an adjacent shop, told police they hadn't heard any screams or shouts for help. "Nityananda hurried towards our lane, shouting for help. We saw the horrible scene and called police," he said. Though the shop had three shutters facing north, the jeweller usually kept two shutters closed, as advised by his vaastu expert, it is said. This had blocked visibility from outside and even from the footpath, as to what was happening inside the shop. "We're hoping for clues from the surveillance camera at the traffic signal near ESI Hospital," said a police officer. He added that the jeweller was a close relative of MLC Lehar Singh, and had settled in the city for more than 25 years. "He is my co-brother, the husband of my youngest sister-in-law. I don't want to comment on anything as investigation is on," Lehar Singh said. Case unsolved Police are yet to solve the robbery at Chemmanur Jewellers, allegedly carried out by a gang of two or three persons near Rajajinagar I Block bus stop in September 2012.

Rajajinagar gets a free dialysis centreMLA set up the unit using his local area development fund. It will cater to BPL patients, while others will be charged a nominal amount Flooded with funds under the Local Area Development (LAD) scheme, almost all MLAs dream of converting their constituencies into model constituencies. While a few forget to spend the money allotted to them, many of them even complain that the fund is not enough. Irrespective of the party, it is common for MLAs to build schools, public toilets, bus shelters and even re-lay roads across their constituencies. But Rajajinagar MLA and minister for law, parliamentary affairs and BWSSB S Suresh Kumar chose to be different in catering to his people and has set-up a free dialysis unit for the needy. Suresh Kumar spent 2 crore allotted to him to spruce up an old building belonging to the health department and converted it into a full-fledged dialysis unit. At a time when the costs of medical services are sky rocketing, the MLAs efforts will provide dialysis services free to the poor and at a nominal cost to others. He has also inked a MoU with Rotary Peenya

Circle to ensure that services are available throughout the year, besides arranging round-the-clock service of nephrologists and technicians at the dialysis unit. The unit is scheduled for inauguration on November 28. Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Suresh Kumar said, It is common to develop infrastructure using LAD funds. But all these services would be short-lived and I was keen on providing something which lasts longer and serves people effectively. So I thought of setting up a free dialysis unit. It is not only difficult to explain, but also traumatic to see the plight of those who develop complications but cant afford to pay for the services regularly. The centre, situated in Rajajinagar second block, has been provided state-of-the-art equipment, including a massive reverse osmosis (RO) plant to purify water for dialysis and a 63 KVA generator to ensure uninterrupted power. We decided to put 18 beds with nine machines initially. The unit can be upgraded to 32 beds, Suresh Kumar said. Setting up the unit is not enough. We need to take care of its maintenance and staffing. Hence we have entered into an agreement with Rotary Peenya Circle to arrange enough number of nephrologists and technicians. While patients with BPL cards will be treated free of cost, all others will be charged 500 in order to meet the salary expenses of the doctors and technicians. The amount is nominal compared to other hospitals where patients are reportedly charged more than 3,000 per sitting. Asked whether the unit is capable of withstanding the sudden spurt in number of patients due to the affordable cost, Suresh Kumar said, We are just making a beginning and we do have that fear in our minds. We hope people will understand the limitations of the unit and cooperate accordingly.
