O Allah, make the months ofRajab and Shabaan blessed for

us, and let us reach Ramadhan.'

The Hadith of Jibreel

Umar Bn al-Khattab, relates: While we

were sitting with Allah's Messenger (SAW)

a man approached us. He had exceedingly

white clothes and exceedingly black hair.No sign of travel could be seen upon him,

yet none of us knew him. He sat before the

Prophet (saw) placing his knees before his

knees and his hands on his thighs and

said: "O Muhammad! Tell me about Islam.

Allah's Messenger (saw) replied: "Islam isto bear witness that there is no God butAllah and that Muhammad is the

Messenger of Allah, to establish prayer, topay charity, to fast the month of Ramadan,and to perform pilgrimage to the House ifyou are able to make the journey."

He said: "You have spoken the truth." Wewere startled that he would ask and thenconfirm it like that. Then he said: "Tell meabout Iman."

Allah's Messenger (saw) replied: "It is tobelieve in Allah, His angels, His books, HisMessengers, the Last Day, and divinedecree, both the good and bad of it.

He said: "You have spoken the truth. Tell meabout excellence in faith.

He replied: "It is to worship Allah as thoughyou see Him, and though you do not see

Him, you know that He sees you.He said: "You have spoken the truth. Tell meabout the hour."

Allah's Messenger (saw) replied: "The onebeing asked knows no more than the one whois asking.

He said: "Then tell me about its signs.

He replied: "Its signs are that a slave will givebirth to her master and that the barefoot,destitute herdsmen shall compete with oneanother in erecting lofty buildings.

Then that man departed and the Prophet (saw)waited for a while. Then he asked me: "O `Umar,

do you know who that questioner was?I replied: "Allah and His Messenger know best.

He said: "That was Jibreel who came to you toteach you your religion." [Sahih Muslim]

Islam and Iman

From the hadith, the meanings ofIslam and Iman are clearly definedand operationalized by the Prophet

(SAW). Islam is the outward actionsthat flow from Iman, the inner actions.

Islam is the product flowing from the

factory of Iman. All pillars of Islamhave implications in our socio-economic and political life.

Allah says:

"The believers are only those

who when Allah's name ismentioned their hearts are filledwith awe, and when His signs arerehearsed to them, their faith

increases and upon their Lordthey rely. [Q8:2-3]

The Prophet (saw) was asked, "What is Islam?The Prophet (saw) answered, "To submit yourheart to Allah and for the people to be safe fromyour tongue and your hand. Then he was asked:"And which Islam is best?" The Prophet (saw)

replied, Iman. Then he was asked: "So what isIman? The Prophet (saw) replied: "To believe inAllah, His angels, His books, His Messengers, andresurrection after death. Then he was asked:"Which deeds are best? The Prophet replied:

"Emigration.

Then he was asked: "What is emigration. TheProphet replied: "To part with evil. He was thenasked: "So which emigration is best? The

Prophet (saw) replied: "Striving in Allah's cause."[Musnad Ahmad

The Six Articles of Iman

Allah says: Righteousness is ofone who believes in Allah, the LastDay, the angels, the Book, and the

Prophets. [Surah al-Baqarah: 177].The sixth is Qadar

Ihsan

Allah says: There is no sin upon thosewho believe and work righteousness forwhat they have eaten in the past if they

now fear Allah, believe, and workrighteousness, and then fear Allah andbelieve, and then fear Allah and workexcellence (ihsan), and Allah loves thosewho work excellence. [Surah al-Maidah:93].

Faith + Salat= Ihsan

The Hour, Unseen

When the angel Jibreel asked the Prophet(saw) about the Hour, the Prophet (saw)replied: The one being asked knows no

more than the one who is asking. Thisanswer shows us how we must deal withthe Unseen. The Prophet (saw) made it clearthat no one knows about this matter except

for Allah.The Hour is part of the knowledge of theUnseen.

Signs of the Hour

The first of these is that a slave willgive birth to her master. The secondsign mentioned is that barefoot,

destitute herdsmen shall compete withone another in erecting lofty buildings.
