JNPT and all Terminalsat JNPort sign MoU

For Inter-Terminal Rail Handling Operation (ITRHO)

By Tutu and Dinesh Pawar

URAN: JNPT (Jawa-harlal Nehru PortTrust) the number onecontainer Port in In-dia, took a major stepin the larger interestof the EXIM communi-ty by facilitating aMoU (Memorandum ofUnderstanding) sign-ing for a new Inter-Ter-minal Rail HandlingOperation (ITRHO)Agreement, betweenall the Terminal atJNPort.

There was anITRHO (Inter Termi-nal Rail Handling Op-eration) MoU signed inthe year 2007 betweenthe then existing threeterminals JNPCT,NSICT & GTI for thehandling of mixedEXIM rail containers. However with two newTerminals, NSIGTand BMCT coming up,the incumbent MoUseemed redundant. Moreover, JNPCT,NSICT & GTI termi-nal rail lines are in aclose proximity to eachother, whereas BMCTrail lines are at an av-erage distance of 5kms from JNPCT,NSICT & GTI lines.Hence the additionalcost factor due to thelarge distance was amajor hindrance to theITRHO movement be-tween BMCT and oth-er Terminals. Hence anew ITRHO Agree-ment was designedand agreed upon by all

Terminals (NSICT,GTI, NSIGT and BM-CTPL) and will comeinto effect from 1stAu-gust, 2019.

The ITRHO agree-ment aims to maxi-mize train placement, track productivity, ef-ficiency, cost effectivehandling, reduce dwelltime of import ICDboxes, connecting ex-port ICD boxes to re-spective terminals intime and also increaserail quotient at JNPT.

The MoU clearlydefines the role & re-sponsibilities of the‘Handling Terminal’and the ‘Receiving Ter-minal’ to ensure safeand timely movementof the Import & Exportrail containers alongwith the requisiteguidelines to be ad-hered. The TerminalTraffic route as mutu-ally agreed betweenthe Terminal Opera-tors shall be strictlyfollowed and if theremay be changes inroutes due to infra-structure develop-ments inside JN Port, all Terminals need toreview the best routeand mutually agree touse for ITRHO opera-tions accordingly.Charges will be leviedon Shipping Lines asper the existingITRHO charges ap-proved by TAMP underthe new ITRHO agree-ment also.

Sharing a few words

on this strategic devel-opment, Shri SanjaySethi, IAS, Chairman,JNPT said, “It is veryencouraging to see col-laborative effort andsupport extended by allthe JNPortTerminalsto come together andfind solutions for im-peding challenges weface in our business.Often there are bottle-necks due to operation-al limitations and thelack of co-ordinationbetween parties causesdelay in addressingthese concerns whicheventually hampersTrade. It is importantthat all stakeholders inour ecosystem co-oper-ate to tackle such clogsin the system, becauseit will help in smooth-ening the overall Tradecycle and also enhanceour efficiency, thusleading to bettergrowth.”

This initiative wasa success due to thekeen involvement ofShri Sanjay Sethi, IAS,Chairman, JNPT whorealized the immensebenefit the new ITRHOAgreement would bringto all stakeholders es-pecially JNPT’s cus-tomers and trade.

So this is a yet an-other significant moveby JNPT to provideease of doing businessto the EXIM communi-ty and a big step for-ward, in its endeavourto be among the bestPorts globally.

An attempt being made to makeNavi Mumbai Plastic-free

In order to form Plastic-free Navi Mumbai, Navi Mumbai Mu-nicipal Corporation, under the guidance of municipal commission-er Annasaheb Misal, is creating awareness among the city resi-dents about usefulness of using cloth or paper bags instead ofplastic bags. Thus NMMC is carrying out in a big way a cam-paign to ban plastic in city.

Such kind of campaign was carried out in Ghansoli under thecontrol of waste management department’s deputy commission-er Tushar Pawar and zone 2’s deputy commissioner Dr AmrishPatnigire. The campaign was carried out by assistant commis-sioner Dattatray Nagre, cleanliness officer Vinayak Juikar andcleanliness inspector and deputy inspectors. Two shopkeeperswere fined Rs 5000 each for using plastic bags and thus total fineamount of Rs 10000 was collected. Fine amount of Rs 2500 wascollected from the businessmen who had thrown waste at publicplaces.

Using banned plastic is a crime and the punishment for com-mitting this crime first time is Rs 5000, second time – Rs 10000and third time – Rs 25000. NMMC has appealed to the city res-idents that they should be environment-friendly and cooperate inthe matter of making Navi Mumbai city plastic-free and stop us-ing completely the banned plastic.

Google Doodle celebratesDr. Muthulakshmi Reddi,

India’s first woman legislatorDr.Muthulakshmi Reddy is a role model for

today’s generation. She was educated and atthe same time fought against social injustice. It’s considered a taboo for a section of today’syouth to fight against the wrong social prac-tices like caste. They can take a leaf out ofDr.Reddy’s life. Actor Gemini Ganesan donat-ed his house in Pudukottai as a give to anorphanage for women named after Ms Reddy. All the citizens of Pudukottai are very proudof this great woman.

Today’s Google Doodle celebrated Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddi, a surgeon, educator, lawmaker and social reformer, on her 133rdbirth anniversary. Dr. Reddi devoted her lifeto public health and fought the battle againstgender inequality. The Government of Tamil

Peacock - National BirdOf India

The national bird of a country is a desig-nated representative of that country’s fauna. It is chosen on the basis of the unique quali-ties that the bird may symbolize. It shoulduphold certain core qualities or values of thenation it belongs to. The national bird shouldbe a prominent feature in the cultural historyof the country. Another point in favor of beingchosen as the national bird is the beauty thatit embodies. The indigenous nature of the birdis another point while it is being considered asthe national bird. Being designated as anational symbol affords the bird a specialstatus with increased awareness and dedicat-ed conservation efforts.

Peafowl is a common name for threespecies of birds in the genera Pavo and

Afropavo of the Phasianidae family, the pheas-ants and their allies. Male peafowl are referredto as peacocks, and female peafowl as peahens. In 1963, the peacock was declared the NationalBird of India because of its rich religious andlegendary involvement in Indian traditions. Thecriteria for this choice were many. The birdmust be well-distributed within the country soit could truly national. It must be recognizableto the common man.

National bird of India is the Indian Peafowlcommonly termed as a Peacock. Vividly colorfuland exuding oodles of grace, the Indian Peafowlcommands a lot of attention. The peacock andits colors are synonymous with Indian identity. It is indigenous to India and Sri Lanka, but nowfeatures in countries all over the world. Pea-cocks are sometimes domesticated and kept inthe garden for aesthetic purposes.

Threats towards the Indian peafowl arise dueto the demand for the beautiful feathers to beused for decorative purposes. They are huntedand killed by poachers for meat as well. Theycan be a nuisance when inhabiting near farmsas they prefer to feed on crop grains. They canbe hunted down for the reasons stated abovealthough that is not a common practice.

The Indian peafowl has been granted specialconservation efforts owing to its status as theNational Bird of India. Hunting of the nationalbird is illegal. Peacock symbolism: Vision,Royalty, Spirituality, Awakening, Guidance,Protection, & Watchfulness. In Greek – Romanmythology the Peacock tail has the eyes of thestars. In Hinduism, the Peacock is associatedwith Lakshmi who represents patience, kind-ness and luck.

The peacock has been a prominent feature inIndian literature as its resplendent beauty is asource of inspiration for many. In popularlegends, when the peacock displays its glorious

plume, it’s a sign of rain. They have iconicstatus as the carrier animal of the Hindu godKartikeya. Lord Krishna was always depictedwith a peacock feather in his headdress. InBuddhist philosophy the peacock representswisdom. The peacock and its feather motifs areprominent features in Mughal architecture. Thepeacock and the peacock feather is still apopular motif to be used in logos, textile pat-terns as well as designs.

The Indian peafowls are best known for thebeautifully elegant display of feathers theevolution of which is believed to be driven bysexual selection. The peacocks spread theirtrain in the shape of a fan and quiver themduring the courtship display. It is believed thatthe number of eye spots in a male’s courtshipdisplay determines his success in mating.

Peafowls are omnivorous in their feeding habitand survive on insects, seeds, fruits and evensmall mammals. They forage on the ground insmall groups which has a single male and 3-5females. They roost as a group as well on theupper branches of a tall tree to escape preda-tors. When agitated they will prefer to flee byrunning, rarely opting to take a flight. Themales are surprisingly agile on foot despite thelong train. The ‘eyes’ in the peacock’s tailfeathers symbolise the all-seeing ChristianGod and – in some interpretations – theChurch. A peacock drinking from a vase isused as a symbol of a Christian believerdrinking from the waters of eternal life.

Peacock is part and parcel of our countryand we like the bird for its wisdom andcolorful nature. It is rightly called NationalBird of India.

End Corruption Corruption in India has reached the high-

est level even after Narendra Modi becoming thePrime Minister of the country. Prices of all com-modities, including that of food grains, LiquidPetroleum Gas (LPG), bus fares, train fares,auto- rickshaw fares and taxi fares have sky-rocketed. As a result of this inflation, the com-mon man has to bear the brunt of the price riseas his/ her salary does not increase in tandemwith the surging inflation.

Although India has achieved both indepen-dence and Republic, it is one of the most cor-rupted and polluted nations in the world. Un-employment is also at an all- time high and manyof the people are without jobs. Narendra Modihad promised the citizens of India that he wouldbring down inflation and curb corruption oncehe became the prime minister of the country. But he has not kept his promise.

Catholic weddings andcustoms

A wedding in a Catholic family is a beauti-ful occasion for relatives and friends to gatheraround the bride- to be or groom-to-be in sup-port or encouragement and also to bless them.

Traditional ceremonies like the roce forGoans and Mangaloreans and the UmbrachaPani for East Indians have added to the fun andexcitement in preparation for the wedding day.The application of coconut juice and milk as asign of ritual cleansing or a bath with the waterdrawn from the village well has a certain sig-nificance for the person going to get married.

But unfortunately, over the years, theseceremonies have degenerated into meaninglessrituals because the ‘fun’ element has meant theunnecessary smashing of eggs or the pouring ofchilled beer or other smelly concoctions on thepersons going to get married.

Someone should enlighten on this uniqueEast Indian custom of ‘Umbracha Pani’ to themodern generation who know very little aboutthis tradition and customs of the community.

During the celebration of weddings andother events, one should remember the orphansand donate a small portion of their budget tothem. These children who have no one to takecare of them, except the religious sisters, willfeel happy and have a smile on their faces.

instructions and losthis wicket for 1 goingfor runs. This wasunnecessary andKohli must bear theblame for earlydebacle and loss ofwickets including his, which let Indiadown. The start wasdisastrous and therecovery afterwardswas only a consolationin the end.

Rohit Sharma alsoshould have joinedthe press meet andclear the misunder-standings or rumoursof rift. Should theCaptain of the Indianteam openly expresshis preference of thehead coach, particu-larly after a process is

in place for selectionof the coach. A selec-tion committee hasbeen constituted andapplications havebeen invited for theappointment of headcoach and others. DidKohli used theoccasion to clear therift or to force theBCCI to extend theservices of RaviSastri. Ravi Shastrifailed to deliver inWorld Cup semi finaland it is expected thatthis is his swansong. If Shastri leave oncefor all, then the axewill fall on Kohli alsoand that is thedestiny of all Indiancaptains in the pastalso.

The Indian captainreiterated that if thedressing room envi-ronment had beenbad, then the teamcould not havepossibly played thequality of cricket thatthey had during theWorld Cup andearlier. The level ofquality of cricket is tobe judged by thepundits and not bythe skipper. Kohlifailed in crucial finalsearlier also.

The few times theIndian team captainsaw some stabilitywas when SauravGanguly had thebacking of Kolkatastrongman JagmohanDalmiya and Mahen-dra Singh Dhoni hadthe backing of N.Srinivasan. Before

them, Sachin Ten-dulkar, Rahul Dravidand Anil Kumble werebarely on top of thesituation and had aless than idealrelationship withtheir respectivechairman of selectors. This is not the firsttime the rift comingin open in Indiancricket.

Indian cricket hasseen many skippersgoing through upsand down from thedays of Nawab ofPataudi to SunilGavaskar. Kapil Dev,the greatest of our all-rounders, was unfair-ly fired after the lossof the 1987 World Cupin India. Both DilipVengsarkar andKrishnamachariSrikkanth suffered

the same fate for nofault of theirs. Thebiggest victim wasSriniwas Ven-katraghavan. He wasmade Captain of theDelhi Test in the1975-76 test seriesagainst the WestIndies and in the nexttest at Calcutta hewas relegated to 12thMan status. SachinTendulkar smellingdanger after thedebacle in Australia, quit on his own.Rahul Dravid under-gone strenuous testfor some time. Now itis Kohli’s turn to gothrough the ticklishsituation. The battlefor captaincy will gofor ever in IndianCricket. That is thecurse of IndianCaptains.

The tug of war inIndian cricket scenar-io is age old. Themost famous one wasthat of Kapil Dev-Gavaskar feud. InWorld Cup do or diematches, the perfor-mance of a playercounts much. In theyear 1983, Kapil Devdropped both Veng-sarkar and RaviShastri, the twoleading lights in theside for the Pruden-tial World Cup semi-final match but stillmanaged to win thecoveted cup in style. The captain has theoption to have thebest playing XI and itcame good. Butcricketing controver-sies in Indian cricketcontinue to surroundthe game for ever.
