    Translators Notes

ear readers! Dawat-e-Islamis Majlis-e-Tarjim, adepartment responsible for reproducing Amr-e-Al-e-

Sunnat, founder of Dawat-e-Islami Shaykh Allma MaulnAbu Bill Muammad Ilys Ar Qdir Razavs

books and booklets into various languages of the world, ispleased to present the English translation of the bookRafiq-ul-Haramayn.

Although any translation is inevitably a form of interpretation,

we have tried our level best to convey the thoughts of the authorin its true sense. For the ease of the reader and in an effort toreconcile the pronunciation of Arabic letters into Latin, atransliteration chart has been added to represent those letterscorrectly.

Terms of Islamic Jurisprudence have not been translated as acaution because in most cases, an English word cannot be afully juristic substitute. However, a glossary has been given atthe end of the book, elaborating the Islamic terms. Further, theindex has also been added.

It should be noted that some of the descriptions regarding visaand pre-departure procedure may be specific to Pakistan.Respected js travelling from other countries will obviouslybe following the rules and regulations of their respectivecountries. Since this book was written by Amr-e-Al-e-Sunnat

several years back when sea travel for Hajj-

pilgrimage was in operation in Pakistan, this book contains adescription regarding sea travel.

    Suggestions for Hajj Pilgrims

Dear ajj pilgrims! May Almighty Allah make your ajj-pilgrimage a blessed one! Ensure that your provisions for this

journey are ready at least 3 to 4 days before departure. It isalso beneficial to seek guidance from some experienced ji.Although almost all the daily needs are available in ijz-ul-

Muqaddas, it will be much cheaper to get these from yourown country as 100 PKR converts to 17 Saudi Riyals only (thisexchange rate was in 1410 ijr; it keeps changing). The costof basic commodities rises during the ajj season. Even a cupof tea costs 2 Riyals (about 12 PKR) at some places.

Hence the suggestions of Sag-e-Madna (the author) and thelist of necessary items mentioned would be extremely useful, especially for the middle class pilgrims. It should also be notedthat the lighter the baggage, the more comfortable the journey.I am now suggesting some items that you should take with you.

You will find them very useful during the pilgrimage. Please note that carrying fruits, cooked food, sweet-meats etc.are not allowed by the authorities.

will also be useful in aramayn.

When Should Pilgrims Travelling by Air Put On

    I

rm?It takes almost 4 hours to reach Jeddah from Karachi by air.Whilst airborne it will be difficult to observe Miqt. Hencethose travelling from Karachi should make initial preparationsat home. If it is not Makr time, offer the Nafl al of Irmand put on Irm as well at home.

However, do not make the intention of Irm at home asmaking intention causes certain restrictions to be imposed.Perhaps the aircraft may be delayed, causing you to observethe restrictions of Irm whilst waiting for the flight at theairport. Further, if you made the intention of Irm at home,

you would no longer be allowed to wear garland around yourneck because of the fragrance of flowers1.

Hence it is convenient to reach the airport in Irm or normaldressing. Bathrooms, Wu facilities and prayer halls areavailable at the airport. You may also put on Irm, offer Nafl

al and make the intention of Irm at the airport, but itwill still be convenient to make the intention of Irm afterthe aircraft has taken off. (See the details of Mqt and intentionon page 28 and 37 respectively).

Jeddah to MakkaOn arriving at Jeddah airport, disembark from the plane with

your hand-luggage reciting Labbak () with utmost devotion.Make your way towards the customs counter. After collecting

1 Precautions of using fragrance in the state of Irm have been described inquestion/answer section of this book. Anyway, if someone has put on Irm buthas not yet made the intention, nor has he recited Labbak it is permissible forhim to apply fragrance and put on garland.

baggage and getting your passport and documents checked, proceed to the bus organized by your Muallim. Depart for

Makka-tul-Mukarrama whilst reciting Labbak ().Remember that like any other journey this is also a journeyduring which one may encounter hardships and discomforts.Sometimes you may have to wait long for transport. Remainpatient and content at all times. It is pointless quarrelling and

arguing as it only aggravates the problem rather than resolveit. Further, the reward of patience is also lost.

Departureby ShipShips normally depart at about 1 p.m. Sometimes there could

be a delay. However, ajj-pilgrims should get to the harbourearly in the morning so that the boarding procedures andother requirements could be fulfilled conveniently. ajj-pilgrimsare transported from the ji camp to the harbour for areasonable fare (those reaching the harbour by their owntransport will be responsible for any problems in case of delay).

Baggage will be transported via trucks. Ensure that your luggageis loaded on the truck. Hang the pouch containing your passport, ticket and any important papers etc. around your neck. Keepalso the necessary items required during the journey includingyour Irm etc. in a large cloth-bag with you.

On board ship, meal and tea are served at fixed intervals; beaware of that. Cost of meal and tea is included in the ticket. Those not used to sea travel may become sea-sick resulting indizziness and nausea. If this happens, sit down or lie down, lest you fall and get injured. If you do not feel better, contact

the doctor. If you have any problem, contact your group leader. He will assist you, .

When Should Pilgrims Travelling by Sea Put On

    I

rm?Sea travel from Karachi to Jeddah via Aden usually takes 7days. Do not put on your Irm in Karachi. Mqt for theajj-pilgrims from Pakistan and India is Yalamlam which isalmost 70 kilometres before Jeddah. When the ship approachesit, a siren wails in the ship, followed by an announcement on

loud speaker advising the pilgrims to put on Irm. You maynow put on your Irm. (The method of putting on Irm isdescribed on page 35).

Coast ofJeddahWhen the ship anchors at the coast of Jeddah, custom officialswill board the ship to check your documents.

    Jeddah Customs

Whilst reciting Labbak (), disembark from the ship witha trembling heart carrying your hand baggage. Check in your

baggage at the customs. You will then be transported to Madna-tul-ujjj, the ji camp of Jeddah. The necessary documentsprocedure may take 12 hours or more but you should not lose

patience. , The representative of your Muallim

will be around to guide you.

    Transport Organized by Muallim

Whether you travel by air or by sea, all transportations fromJeddah to Makka, Araft, Min, Madna etc. and finally back

to Jeddah from Makka are to be arranged by your Muallim, the cost of which has already been included in your fare.

In addition, serving you with meal at the time of your firstarrival at the Muallims office in Makka and with lunch in

Araft, is also the responsibility of the Muallim.

    For Refund of Travel Coupons

Keep your travel coupons safely. If you have not used thetransport arranged by the Muallim for travelling from Makka

to Madna etc., you are entitled to a refund. When you get toJeddah airport to depart for your country, simply take the unusedcoupons to the officials in the transport office to claim yourrefund.

family, friends and associates regarding the rights whichyou may have violated. It becomes incumbent upon thepeople from whom forgiveness is sought to forgive

    2. Ask permission from your parents. If however ajj hasbecome Far for a person he will have to perform ajjeven if his parents dont give permission. However, oneshould not travel to perform Umra or a Nafl ajj withoutthe consent of ones parents. Further, it is a misconception

that the offspring cannot perform ajj until their parentshave performed it.

How to Offer al DuringJourney?1. By Shara, the person travelling at least 57.5 miles (i.e.

almost 92 kilometres) is considered a traveller. (Bar-e-Sharat)

    2. On reaching the destination, if one intends to stay overthere for 15 days or more, he will not be regarded a travellerby Shara. Instead, he will now be considered a Muqm(resident). In this case, he will not offer Qar al(shortened al where 4 Far Rakat are reduced to 2).

However, if his intention was to stay for less than 15 days,he is to offer Qar al, i.e. offer two Rakt instead of four

in Faral ofuar, Ar and Ish. There is no reductionin the Faral of Fajr and Maghrib. Likewise, Sunnaand Witr al will also be offered as usual without anyreduction.

    3. One cannot offer Far, Witr and Fajr-Sunna al in amoving train. These al may be offered after the trainhas stopped completely. If someone began offering alin a halted train which then moves, even if a little, beforehe finishes the al with Salam, the al will be invalid. If there is no chance of the train being halted (and thetime for al is going to end), offer al in the moving

train and make its Qa later on after getting off the train.Other Sunna and Nafl al may be offered in the movingtrain.

    4. The ruling of offering al during air travel is quitedifferent. All types ofal (Far, Witr, Sunan, Nafl etc.)

may be offered during air travel. There is no need to repeatthem afterwards.

    6. Whilst travelling on trains or planes, people usually offeral sitting and facing any direction they like. This isincorrect. One should find out the direction of the Qiblaand then offer the al whilst standing. It is necessary to

    do so.

Treasure of Devotion, Essential for ji

Beloved js! As the physical means are necessary for theji, inner spiritual treasure is also a significant requirementfor him. This treasure is that of true love and devotion whichis attained from the true devotees.

Once a person entered the blessed court of Sayyidun Ghau-ul-Aam . Addressing the audience, Ghau-ul-Aam declared, This person has just arrived here in a singlestep from Bat-ul-Muqaddas (Jerusalem) in order to learn themanners of true devotion from me.

    Adopt Affiliation With True Devotee

! Even a saint possessing saintly miracle (Karma)needs to attend the court of a greater saint so as to attain thetreasure of true devotion. How greatly we will be in the needof learning the manners of devotion! We should also have

affiliation with some true devotee of the Holy Prophet to learndevotion from him and then depart for Madna.

Beloved js! Two incidents of the true devotees of Allah and His beloved and blessed Prophet are

being presented. Read them with a dejected heart sheddingtears in the desire of being blessed with love and devotion ofAllah and Mustafa .

    Mysterious ji

Sayyidun Fuayl bin Iy has narrated, Peoplewere busy making Du in the plains of Araft when I spotteda young man standing with his head hung in shame.Approaching him, I said, O young man, you too make Du.He replied, I fear that I have lost the time granted to me, so

    how can I make Du?

Sayyidun Fuayl bin Iy states, I said to him,Make Du hoping to be blessed by Allah for the sake ofthese peoples supplications. As the young man tried to raisehis hands for Du, he became overwhelmed, letting out a

piercing cry. He then fell onto the ground and his soul left hisbody. (Kashf-ul-Majb)

    ji Who Slaughtered Himself

    Sayyidun unnn Mir

reports that once he saw ayoung man in Min who was quietly sitting at a side whileother people were busy performing their sacrifices (of animals). The young man cried out suddenly, O my beloved Allah !Your servants are busy offering their sacrifices. I wish to sacrificemyself in Your court. O my Creator! Accept my sacrifice. Saying

this, he ran his finger across his throat and fell down. Sayyidununnn Mir stated, I hurriedly approached him

and was astonished to see that he had passed away. (Kashf-ul-Majb)

How is it to Call Oneselfji?

Respected js! Did you notice? This is the ajj of truedevotees! May Allah bless us with a deeply sincere heartby virtue of these two js.

Remember, sincerity is a pre-requisite for the acceptance ofany worship. The more sincere a deed is, the greater its rewardwill be. Alas! As a result of drifting away from Islamic teachingsand righteous company, most of our worships are now ruinedby ostentation.

Unfortunately, these days, ostentation and showing-off seemto have become an integral part in most of our affairs includingeven ajj, a great worship. For example, many people callthemselves ji after having performed ajj. Sometimes theyadd the title ofji before their name. Perhaps you would bethinking as to what is wrong with this. Although there is noharm if other people call you ji without you desiring it butdear js! Ponder calmly, if one calls himself ji, isnt heinforming others of his worship unnecessarily! This can betterbe understood with the help of the following example.

    An Anecdote

A train was moving towards its destination. Two persons whowere sitting close to each other started conversation. One ofthem asked the other, Whats your name? The other person

replied, ji Shafq. The second person also asked, And whatsyour name please? The first one replied, Namz Rafq.

know as to how many times have you performed ajj? Theji Sahib replied, I performed ajj just last year.Rafq responded immediately, You have performed ajj justonce in your life and you are openly calling yourself a jishowing-off your ajj whereas I offer Namz (al) five timesdaily, so what is strange if I call myself Namz Rafq?

How is it to Display a ajj Congratulations Board?

You may have taken my point. Nowadays the trend of showingoff has grown to extreme limits! On departure or arrival of

ji Sahib, his home is adorned with lights along with a boardajj congratulation displayed at the front side of the home.

Allah forbid, at some places, even the photographs of theji Sahib dressed in Irm are taken. What is all this? Is itappropriate for an escaped slave to return to the blessed court

of his Master with such pomp and show?Definitely not, one should proceed for ajj with tears in eyesand remorse in heart for all the sins committed.

    ajj on Foot

Sayyidun Mlik bin Dnr once left Basra for ajjon foot. Someone asked him as to why he was not going byany transport. He replied, Should the escaped slavebe on a carriage whilst returning to the court of his Master forasking pardon? By Allah ! If I headed for the sacred city of

Makka walking even on burning coal it is a small price topay. (Tanb-ul-Mughtarrn)

Types ofajjThere are three types ofajj:

    1. Qirn2. Tamattu3. Ifrd

QirnIt is the most preferred type of ajj. The performer of thisajj is called a Qrin. For this ajj, the intention of both ajjand Umra is made together after Irm has been put on.After performing Umra, a Qrin cannot get alq or Qar

done; rather, he will remain in the state of Irm as usual. Onthe 10th, 11th or 12th of ul-ijja, after having alq or Qardone and offering sacrifice (Qurbn), he will remove hisIrm.

1 According to historical narrations, about 10,000 aba (companions) are resting

in Jannat-ul-Baq. Alas! In 1926, the shrines of this blessed graveyard weredemolished and roads were made over the sites of the sacred graves. Therefore,Sag-e-Madna hasnt dared to enter Jannat-ul-Baq to date lest he steps on somesacred grave unknowingly. As per religious rulings, it is arm to place foot on aMuslims grave or to sit on it. Hence devoted visitors are requested to make Salmfrom outside. (Sag-e-Madna)

2 Mashid is the plural of Mashad which implies The place where one ispresent. Here this refers to the places which the Holy Prophet

visited. At such places Dus are accepted. There are countless places in Makkaand Madna which the beloved Prophet of Allah visited, e.g. thesacred orchard of Sayyidun Salmn Frs etc. (Sag-e-Madna)

    35Rafiq-ul-Haramayn

    Tamattu

The performer of this type ofajj is called a Mutamatte. Thosecoming from outside Miqt in the months ofajj can performthis ajj. For example, the people from Indo-Pak usuallyperform Tamattu. The convenience that lies in it is that aMutamatte, after performing Umra, can get alq or Qardone and remove his Irm. Then, on the 8th of ul-ijja or

before it, Irm ofajj is put on.

    Ifrd

The performer of this type ofajj is called a Mufrid. This typeofajj does not include Umra. Only the Irm for ajj is

put on. The residents of Makka and ill, i.e. those livingbetween aram area and Miqt (e.g. the people of Jeddah)perform ajj Ifrd.

There is the same manner of putting on Irm for both ajjand Umra. However, there is a slight difference in intentionand its wording. The details of intention have been describedin the next pages. First note the method of putting on Irm.

    Method of Putting on Irm

    1. Trim nails2. Remove armpits hair and under navel hair including the

hair of the rear private part.

    3. Use Miswk4.

    Make Wu

    5. Perform Ghusl thoroughly

    6. Apply perfume to the body and Irm shawls as it is aSunna but dont use any perfume that stains clothing

    like dry ambergris (umber).

    7. Removing sewn clothes Islamic brothers should put on apiece of new or washed shawl to cover the upper bodyand use a similar cloth as Taband1 (i.e. a piece of cloth likesarong).

    8. Belt with pocket may also be worn to keep passport ormoney etc.

    Irm of Islamic Sisters

Islamic sisters are to wear their sewn clothes as usual. Theymay wear socks and gloves as well. They should keep their headscovered but should not wear such a veil that touches theirface. However, they may use a book or handheld fan in orderto conceal their face from non-Maram men, when necessary.

Nafl al of IrmIf it is not a Makr time, offer two Rakt Nafl al with theintention of Irm (men should also keep their heads coveredwhilst offering this al). It is better to recite Sra Kfirnand Sra Ikhls after Sra Ftia in the first and the second

    Rakat respectively.

    Intention for Umra

Now the Islamic brothers with their heads uncovered and theIslamic sisters with their heads covered should make the

1 Taband (sarong) must be thick enough to prevent the skin colour to be noticedand the other cloth could be of towelling.

following intention whether they are performing normalUmra of any day (other than the ajj season) or Umra for

    ajj Tamattu.

Translation: Y Allah , I make the intention of Umra, make iteasy for me and accept it from me. Help me in performing it andmake it blessed for me. I have made intention for Umra and puton its Irm for the sake of Allah .

Intention for ajjAfter putting on the Irm ofajj, a Mufrid should make thefollowing intention. Similarly, after putting on Irm, aMutamatte should also make the following intention on 8th oful-ijja or before it.

Translation: Y Allah ! I make the intention ofajj, make it easyfor me and accept it from me. Help me in offering it and make itblessed for me. I have made the intention for ajj and have put onits Irm for the sake of Allah .

    Intention for ajj Qirn

A Qrin should make intention for both ajj and Umra inthe following words:

    56/264

    38Rafiq-ul-Haramayn

Translation: Y Allah ! I make the intention ofajj and Umra, make both of them easy for me and accept them from me. I havemade the intention ofajj and Umra and have put on the Irm

of both solely for the sake of Allah .

    Labbak

After making the intention (whether it is the intention ofUmra or that ofajj) it is essential to utter Labbak at least

once; uttering it thrice is preferable. Labbak is as follows:

I am in attendance. Y Allah I am in attendance. I am inattendance (and) You have no partners. I am in attendance. No doubt, all glorification and bounties are for You and also the sovereignty(is Yours), You have no partners.

    One Sunna

It is a Sunna to make Du after uttering Talbiya (i.e. Labbak).A blessed ad states that our beloved Rasl would make Du to Allah for the acquisition of Allahs pleasure, bounties and paradise and for protection from

Hell. Without doubt, Allah is pleased with the belovedProphet . Doubtlessly, the Prophet of mankind,

the peace of our heart and mind, the most generous and kind is not only predestined to enter Heaven but he

is also the Master of Heaven by the grace ofAllah .

In fact, these Dus are also aimed at teaching us so that wewould also make Du with the intention of acting upon aSunna. Anyway, the condition of Irm has now started.

Recite Labbak repeatedly. To inspire you, two Aadi are statedbelow:

    1. Sayyidun Ab urara has reported whenthe reciter of Labbak recites it, he is given a piece of goodnews. It was asked if he is given the good news of being

blessed with Paradise, he replied, Yes. (abarn)

    2. Sayyidun Sal bin Sad has reported that theProphet of Rama, the Intercessor of Umma, the Ownerof Janna has said, When a Muslim recitesLabbak, each and every stone, tree and clod up to the edgeof the earth towards his right and left, all recite Labbak.

    8 Madan Pearls of Labbak

    1. Memorize Labbak and recite it innumerable times. Reciteit while going upstairs or downstairs, when your caravanmeets the other one, at dawn, dusk and at night and afteral of five times.

    2. Whenever you recite Labbak, recite it at least thrice.3. As soon as a Mutamir as well as a Mutamatte perform

first Istilm ofajar-ul-Aswad for commencing awf ofUmra, they should give up reciting Labbak.

  • 8/3/2019 Rafiq Ul Haramayn_noPW

    58/264

    40Rafiq-ul-Haramayn

    4. Unlike a Mutamir and a Mutamatte, a Mufrid and aQrin should stay in Makka and keep reciting Labbak.

Their recitation of Labbak will end on 10th of ul-ijjawhen they hurl the first stone at Jamart-ul-Aqaba (bigSatan). Its details will come ahead.

    5. Islamic brothers should recite Labbak loudly but it shouldnot be so loud as to cause difficulty to themselves or others.

    6. Islamic sisters should recite Labbak in low voice. BothIslamic brothers and sisters should note down the followingruling. Besides ajj, whenever you recite anything, it isessential to recite it loud enough for you to hear but notso loud as to disturb others.

However, there is no harm if one cannot listen to hisrecitation due to impaired hearing or due to noise aroundhim but he should recite at least in such a voice that hecan hear himself when there is no such problem.

    7. Intention is a condition for Irm. If Labbak is utteredwithout intention, Irm will not be valid. Similarly, amere intention is not sufficient unless Labbak or itsalternative is recited. (Alamgr)

    8. For Irm, it is essential to recite Labbak at least once. If,in lieu of Labbak, someone uttered

    ,

    ,

or some other invocation regarding glorification of Allah, making intention of Irm, his Irm will be valid

but Sunna is to recite Labbak.

    Important Ruling Regarding Intention

Remember! The intention of heart (willingness in heart) is, infact, a valid intention. Whether one makes intention for al,

  • 8/3/2019 Rafiq Ul Haramayn_noPW

    59/264

    41Rafiq-ul-Haramayn

fast, Irm or for any other deed, if the intention is notpresent in his heart, mere verbal utterance of the words of the

intention is not sufficient, and such an intention is not valid.

Keep also in mind that uttering the words of intention inArabic is not necessary; one can also utter it in his mothertongue. Similarly, uttering the words of intention in any languageis not necessary either; just the presence of intention in heart

is sufficient. However, uttering it verbally is better and utteringit in Arabic is even more preferable as Arabic is the sweet andelegant language of the Noble Prophet . Wheneverone makes intention in Arabic, it is necessary that he understandsits meaning.

    Meaning of Irm

The literal meaning of Irm is to declare a thing arm becauseeven some all (lawful) acts become arm (unlawful) forthe person who is in the state of Irm. The Islamic brother

who is in the state of Irm is called Murim whereas theIslamic sister is called Murima.

    arm Acts in Irm

The following acts are arm in the state of Irm.

    1. For men to wear sewn clothes.2. To wear a cap or to tie a turban or handkerchief on the head.3. For men to place a bundle of clothes onto the head (Islamic

sisters should keep their heads covered with shawls; they

are not prohibited to place bundle of clothes onto the head).4. For men to wear gloves (no prohibition for women).
