Daylily Dictionary: Did You Know? Whet does it mean when a daylily is described as “bud building?” Scientifically called “indeterminate inflorescence,” it means that more

buds keep on forming after flowers on the scape have already begun to bloom. Usually the buds start forming above the blooms and the branches get long and tend to spiral. Bud building is a desirable trait that will prolong the bloom season. Garden conditions will affect this

characteristic. It is easier to spot bud building later in the season when you can count the bud scars. For those of you hybridizing, look for this trait!

Nominating Committee for RADS Officers At the last meeting at David Metzger’s house, the Nominating Committee for Officers for the 2010 year was appointed. Shirley Shelton, Betty Keith, and Robin Baze agreed to serve on this committee. After making numerous calls to members, the committee submits their recommendation as follows:

“In addition to our current slate of officers, add Julia Perkins for the position of Secretary.”

Voting for officers will be conducted at the September meeting.

Need Hospitality Chairperson: We are still looking for a volunteer that regularly attends meetings to take over the tasks of Hospitality Chair. This person maintains our meeting/picnic food items. This means they bring the ice, drinks, coffee makers, coffee, and paper goods to all our meetings and store the items at other times. Please think about taking on this very helpful task! It really is not right to leave this for our president to do each time. We really need you!

Newsletter Articles: Please forward all newsletter articles or ideas for inclusion in the next newsletter to Belinda Sheppard by September 21, 2009. I would love to hear from you. Order Your 2010 Eureka Now! It’s time to place the group order for the Eureka. Our club joins other clubs to submit a large order for the Eureka so that we can get a wholesale discount. The total number ordered will affect the individual price. If you would like to place an order for the Eureka with RADS, please ask Paulette to put you on the list. It’s always good to save in any way you can – leaves more money for buying daylilies!

Outdoor Pillows: Pam Rutledge has lots of special outdoor fabric and is making beautiful pillows that RADS members can purchase. All proceeds go to the club. What a wonderful outreach for RADS! If you are interested, please check with Pam. Thank you Pam for doing this for the club!

Popularity Poll: For all those members that are also members of AHS, now is the time to vote to select the most popular daylilies for 2009. Your vote is very important to daylily growers and people who make daylily selections for purchase -- and it only takes a few minutes for you to do. It is the hope of the AHS that this popularity poll presents a true picture of which daylilies perform well in our region and are best liked by our members. The rules have changed this year. This was done to improve the quality of the results and to emphasize the regional nature of those results. Each region has its own ballot with a special list of cultivars. Each member will have 10 votes, and up to 5 of these may still be write-ins. The write-ins are encouraged to keep the annual ballot fresh with newer cultivars. The popularity poll is intended to be an individual’s own personal vote – so no group voting. Clubs, corporations, and institutions shall not vote. If you love daylilies, please VOTE! Postmark deadline is September 1, 2009. (See ballot next page)
