CIRPA asking removal of duty on vinylIn view of the current crisis involving vinylpressings in Canada, the CanadianIndependent Record Production Association(CIRPA) has asked the Canadiangovernment to suspend duties on importedvinyl pressings.

Brian Chater, Executive Director ofCIRPA, points out that "With theconcentration of pressing facilities in Canadathe availability problem seems to be a longterm fact of life and one that can cause severedamage to the Canadian Independent

Marketing changes forCBS Music ProductsDon Oates, Vice President, Sales &Marketing for CBS Music Products Canada,has announced the following personnelchanges within the marketing department.

Norman Miller, formerly Director, CBSMasterworks and Jazz Product, has been ap-pointed Senior Director, Marketing. Themain emphasis of his new position will bedealing with both rack and retail accounts.

Bill Bannon, in addition to his countryproduct responsibilities, will now look afterjazz product through his appointment asDirector, Country and Jazz Product.

Karen Hunter will expand her respon-sibilities for television -marketed products tothat of a new liaison with national accounts(e.g. Handleman, Roblan, Pindoff andSound Insight). Although the workings ofdirect sales remains under the auspices of theindividual sales reps, Hunter's auxiliary roleis expected to open up new lines of com-munications with these accounts. She nowtakes on the mantle of Manager, NationalAccounts and Televised Marketing.

Further, Chater raises two major pro-blems facing the independent sector over thevinyl problem. "First, the lack of vinylseverely cuts back the production of currentlysuccessful records." He punches home hispoint with "This 15 to 20 percent reduction intotal sales causes severe damage to in-dependents who have committed money tomarketing and promotion plans and cannotrealize their potential with finances delicatelybalanced. At best, this can cause major cashflow problems for the independents.

"Secondly, the lack of availability ofsingles effectively removes a key element inthe promotion of new and upcoming artists inmany areas and denies many small companiesand artists the chance to expose their materialto the marketplace in any meaningful way."

Blue Rodeo & Robertsonbig CASBY winnersThis year's CASBY Awards, a toned -downversion of past years, was held in Toronto(Oct 13), sponsored by CFNY-FM. Theawards were based on ballots that appearedin daily and college newspapers.

Blue Rodeo, who distinguishedthemselves with a sweep of RPM's Big Coun-try Awards this year, as well as this year'sCCMA Awards, maintained their popularitystatus with three CASBY wins. Also takingthree categories (he shared theEngineer/Producer category with DanielLanois)was Robbie Robertson. Record pro-duct by Blue Rodeo (Risque Disque) andRobertson (Geffen) are distributed by WEA.

It can't be true ... ! I don't believe it. Holycow. Achtung! Rumour has it that a major,major non -rock, non -pop, non -country, non -new wave, non -children's line will shortly betaken over by a very large recording com-pany. I can't even mention initials here. Now,don't that beat all. (EC: Is there a move in-volved as well . . . ? Just asking . . . !)

Speaking of image ...! I did a short surveyof retailers and programmers . . . and theresults were very interesting. I asked them toname the major labels. Of those polled, 89percent named six, and the remaindercouldn't be bothered. Has the industryshrunk again . . .? I thought there were sevenmajors . . at least there was the last time Icounted. This will make an interestingchapter in my book! (EC: We may have onlyfive by the time your book is published!)

Sin§in' In The Rain! Toronto's live theatrecommunity never fails to amaze me. I took inthe opening of Singin' In The Rain, which isbeing staged by Adolf Toman at Toronto'sLimelight Theatre, and I was pleasantly sur-prised by the all -Canadian cast . . . and therainmaking apparatus that caused quite animpact with the audience. The production isexcellent and bursting with energy and excite-ment. This should be another long run forToman and friends. My dinner partners, TheSun's John Downing and his very interestingwife, Mary, added to the perfect evening.(EC: You seem to be getting along with thedailies . . . !)

On the subject of the dailies ... !It mustbe difficult being a showbiz snoop for a daily.I'm thinking of one in particular, and justwatching her in action makes me want tobreak her pencil. I've seen her approached byadoring fans . . . and new and establishedrecording artists . . . and wow . . . does shehave a nasty side. I wonder where she parksher broom. Word is getting around, andsome of the more interesting stars areavoiding her. (EC: I hear that when she goesto a reception, if there isn't any food . . . shestomps out!!)

A break for Murray . . . ! Ron Scott atCapitol slipped me a cassette of Murray

McLauchlan's debut single for the label . . .and I've got to tell you . . . it caused an emo-tional lump in my throat. Murray and I goback a lot of years, and I've seen his hopesdashed more than once, but this new single,My Imaginary Tree, has all the properties tomake it a hit. (EC: I don't think we doenough flagwaving . . !)

How about a letter bee . . . ! I see whereCIRPA is petitioning the government toremove the duty on vinyl product coming intothis country. Well, if we are so all -fired con-cerned over the vinyl crisis, how much of abun -fire would it take to get the industry tomove as individuals in this regard. Jot a lineof complaint . . . or two to John Watt.remember him? He used to be in the recordbusiness. That's John Watt at theDepartment of Communications in Ottawa.(EC: Smile . . . ?)

In my ongoingmisadventures with FAX . . . to date I havereceived a 14 -page confidential report on avery important proposal that involves a ma-jor corporate sponsor; no less than threemessages from FAX competitors telling methey can do a better job; a menu for cooking"forest hare", whatever that is; an order re-questing 30,000 deletes; another confidentialproposal to the competitor of the first men-tioned confidential proposal; and the latest,now get this. Working away at the office onenight, about 10 pm, the FAX starts to buzz.It's a message from some meathead politiciantelling me how valuable my vote is and howmuch he can do for me if he is elected. Although parents apparently just don'tunderstand, they do seem to come in handyon occasion. As fate would have it, SamBrown's parents happen to be very goodfriends with Pink Floyd founding memberand guitarist David Gilmour. Hence Brown,an aspiring artist whose father is sixties singerJoe Brown, released her debut album onA&M this past summer and it features, infact, Gilmour on two tracks: This Feeling andI'll Be In Love. Indeed it's not what youknow.

The petite yet resourceful Brown co-produced the album, titled Stop!, with herbrother Pete, in England with not so muchthe idea of releasing a record chocked full ofsingles but good songs sung well. Her singingqualifications are virtually inpeccable, havingperformed with the National Youth Jazz Or-chestra, Dexy's Midnight Runners and Span-dau Ballet since her teenaged days. Last yearBrown travelled to Los Angeles, staying forseveral months, to hone her writing skills.

"It's hard for me to tell whether it's bador good," begins Brown. "It's difficult to beobjective. My brother and I have the sameideas, so you can only do your best really,and that's what we've done. Toronto developer buysCanada's WonderlandCanada's Wonderland (just north of Toron-to), regarded as Canada's biggest themepark, has been bought by JDS InvestmentsLtd. according to a report in the FinancialPost (Oct 14/88). Apparently Peter and Ed-ward Bronfman have a large interest in JDSInvestments, which bought 80 percent of thepark for a reported $140 million. The other20 percent will remain with the park's formermajor shareholder, Kings Entertainment.

According to the FP report, JDS wantedto move in to the amusement park businessbecause "it is similar to managing shoppingcentres," in which JDS is heavily involved.They are also reportedly interested indeveloping the real estate around the park.

on occasion. As fate would have it, Sam Brown's parents happen to be very good

"But there was no hurry," she con- tinues. "All we wanted to do was make an album and try to make some good music. It wasn't like we were rushing out a pop record

and trying to get hits. It was a case of making a good record and waiting to work with the

right people." Their record was actually released eighteen months after their initial contact was made with the record companies, because their A&R contact moved from

Phonogram in the U.K. to A&M, Brown in- forms, and their record moved with him.

It's a debut that obviously focusses on the vocal talents of Brown, and changes in

styles and tempos from song to song, a variety that defies collective description. While freeing her to move in any direction on

the next effort, it's certainly an album that has created headaches for her marketing,

teams around the world. Unrelenting though, Brown will record again with as much diversi-

ty as possible, hoping to attract a segment of the consuming public that is often overlook- ed, she says.

"I think you have to treat each song dif- ferently. If a song calls for a jazz arrange-

ment, that's what you do. I don't see why you should try to make each song sound the same

and I certainly don't think that the audience that you're playing to want to hear things that sound all the same. It's variety and

ferent kinds of music then it's good for the music industry too.

"But it's definitely been a problem for the marketing people. They like to have a 'rock' album or a 'funk' album or whatever.

Nobody seems to know what to class this album as, which is proving to be a difficult selling point." Well, at least that's what the young lady is being told anyway. However, there's still the distinctive guitar of Gilmour

and Brown raises an interesting point with respect to guesting musicians, supposedly

superstars. "He's (Gilmour) been a friend of my

mum and dad's for years," she explains. "He just said to me one day 'If you ever need any

help, just give us a call,' And we did. We phoned him up and he said 'Yes,' and that

was it. "We like to think all these people are in-

accessible, but I don't think they really are. I think they really like tplay on other people's

records and they like the opportunity to do something different. Just from my point of

view, I love doing backing vocals for people. There's a certain lack of responsibility

attached to it, which is very attractive when you're tied up in your own thing all the time.

It's great just to go and play or just go and sing."

For someone who started in the business professionally at the age of 15, Brown seems

to have learned her lessons well. Not only has she had the opportunity to record with some of the finest musicians, but also to tour with

them. By displaying patience and throwing a bit of caution to the wind, Sam Brown has

become a name to watch.

Italian Guglielmo Marconi made radiohistory on December 13, 1901 by transmittingthe letter "s" in Morse code from Poldhu,Cornwall, England to a receiving station onSignal Hill overlooking St. John's Harbourin Newfoundland. However, the equallyhistoric event staged by Canadian inventorReginald Fessenden has been generallyignored. It was on December 24, 1906 at 9 pmeastern standard time, when Fessendentransmitted human voices from Brant Rock,near Boston, to several ships at sea owned bythe United Fruit Company. Fessenden was

He then displayed histalent on the violin by playing Oh Holy Nightand actually sang the last verse as he played.He had slated readings by Mrs. Helen Fessen-dan and Fessenden's secretary, but they werethe first people on record to be paralyzedwith mike fright. Fessenden asked hislisteners to write and report to him that theyheard the broadcast. He received mail fromNew York to Virginia.

Fessenden doesn't get too much creditfor his achievements and even theEncycopedia Canadiana lists him under hismother's name, Clementina, who establishedEmpire Day. He is mentioned as one of herfour sons, "inventor of the wirelesstelephone; the radio compass and the visiblebullet for machine guns. He also invented thefirst television set in North America in 1919."

The government coffers were even openback in those days. Marconi received a grantfrom the Canadian government to continuehis experiments in Cape Breton, butFessenden, who was turned down by theCanadian government, went south to work inthe field of electricity in the U.S.

Perhaps the finest tribute paid toFessenden, unfortunately, was made at thetime of his death by the New York HeraldTribune, which editorialized as follows: "Itsometimes happens, even in science, that oneman can be right against the world. ProfessorFessenden was that man. He fought bitterlyand alone to prove his theories. It was he whoinsisted, against the stormy protests of everyrecognized authority, that what we now callradio was worked by continuous waves sentthrough the ether by the transmitting stationas light waves are sent out by a flame. Mar-coni and others insisted that what was hap-pening was a whiplash effect. The progress of

Low profile, lack of vinyl hurting Hart's career"We're feeling the vinyl crisis even here inMontreal," says Aquarius MarketingManager, Keith Brown. "With the Corey(Hart) record out, it's just not the time tohave pressing problems." Brown had placedan order for 15,000 singles, and several weekslater, had only received 3,500. A number ofthem were rejected for quality reasons, whichadded to the problem. "It was an impossiblesituation," continues Brown. What wouldnormally take two days, three at most, nowyou're lucky to get an answer in two weeks.So, for a record that should be doing better,we were more than 10,000 on backorder at apoint when it should have been converting."

Radio reaction to Hart's single, SpotYou In A Coalmine, has been quite good, butthe timing for a U.S. release is another pro-blem, and as Brown points out the Aquariuslabel is locked into a situation where the U.S.people are calling different shots.

"In Canada you can get away with hav-ing Adult Contemporary and CHR stationsplaying a current record," he elaborates,"and have AOR playing something complete-ly different. In the U.S. it's almost like youhave to have everything in synch in order toget the highest possible rating, and it's thosechart numbers that make everyone react.

"In Canada I think the charts are impor-tant, but airplay is the bottom line and yourability to quantify just how big a hit youhave is not quite as important as the impact itmakes on the public. At that rate I'm hopingthat Corey's depth on this album will pull itout." Hart's album, Young Man Running, isalready past platinum sales in Canada.

One of the other problems that facedHart, two weeks after the release of hisalbum, was the parting of the ways with Fred-die DeMann, who managed his U.S. affairs."The U.S. company spent a fair amount oftime and effort and money promoting therelease," says Brown, "which stopped deadin the U.S. trades. After showing all signs ofbeing quite an active record, it suddenly ran

out of gas. When that happened Corey didn'thave a manager. He was in Japan at the timesetting up promotion for his upcoming tour.No one really picked up the slack ... or mov-ed fast, with the result the American com-pany deferred putting off a release date forthe single and the latest I have is they're goingto release Coalmine in January."

Having a good manager is obviously apriority with U.S. labels, and Hart didn'thave a manager in the marketplace doing theright things. He is now being handled byDana Miller of Los Angeles, who was manag-ing Rick Springfield when Hart opened forhim a few years ago. "He (Miller) knows allthere is to know about corporate sponsor-ships," Brown stresses, "and basically, thefinancial ends of a tour. His real forte is radiopromotion." Unfortunately, Hart's album ispresently in a state of limbo in the U.S.because of the lack of a single.

Brown is hopeful that EMI/Manhattan,the U.S. release label for Hart, "is seriouswhen they say they're going to make a bigcommitment and treat this as a brand newproject come January. Fortunately for us,they (EMI/Manhattan) don't have a wholelot coming along in January, so it mightmake sense for them to look at it that way in-stead of squandering their efforts now. LetCorey get reorganized . . . they'll getreorganized and they'll have the time tocommit to Coalmine."

Unfortunately for the Aquarius label,they will be pressured to show that the recordis a "tremendous hit" in Canada, but asBrown says, "That's not really my concern.With this vinyl problem . . going to numberone is rather out of the question . . . I wouldthink. Whether the airplay comessimultaneously or sequentially, it doesn'tmatter. We had a lot of AOR play onCoalmine in June, July and August and nowI'm hoping to get more AOR airplay for whatI hope is the next single, Lone Wolf."

Although Brown is concerned about the

Coalmine single he is comforted by the factthe album is beginning to pick up, and as hepoints out, "Cassettes are good and CD salesare far exceeding any of Corey's previousreleases."

Brown, however, is admittedly disgruntled over Hart's reluctance to do interviews.His record has been on release for fivemonths and he has yet to talk to anyone inradio . .. or at the trade journal level. He hasapparently done three interviews and had acouple of in-depth articles done on him, but,apart from reviews, that has been the extentof Canadian media coverage. Hart has anabundance of charm, and a boy next door im-age that would do him a lot of good if hewould meet more people in the media, par-ticularly in radio.

Amazing Video Machinesget nod from TTC/LRTThe Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) hasawarded exclusive rights to NelsonVideovend, Canadian marketing arm for TheAmazing Video Machine (AVM) to operatevideocassette dispensing machinesthroughout the Toronto subway and LRTsystems. Initially, AVMs will be placed in 16prime locations, representing exposure tomore than 3.5 million commuters on a weeklybasis. There are currently more than 100AVMs in the Toronto area and the companyrecently completed a major development pro-ject for the launching of its second generationAVM, manufactured and designed for themexclusively by Diebold, Inc. It's expected anetwork of 200 second generation AVMs willbe operational by November of this year inthe Toronto area, making AVM the thirdlargest consumer terminal system in Toronto.Company plans call for the expansion of thenetwork in Ontario to 400 AVMs by the closeof the second quarter of next year.
