RACV/Channel 7 semi – Finalist Workshop UPDATE
The ‘Drink Driving’ VCAL team participated in
the semi- finalist workshop on Friday 23 May
2014, at the Melbourne Convention Centre.
The purpose of the workshop was to provide
students with support and expertise in further
investigating road safety and media. Various
speakers presented practical information
which provided a framework for our team to
discuss their ideas, and then refine and further
develop their concept.
A total of 118 design briefs were submitted to
the RACV and Channel 7. Of these 18 were
selected as semi – finalists. We are very
excited at being one of the lucky 18. We have
until Friday 27 June 2014 to resubmit our
concept for final judging. After the
resubmission, RACV and Channel 7 will then
select five concepts and invite the teams to
present their concept before a panel of judges
inside the Channel 7 Boardroom. On the day
we learned that our concept is very unique
and has amazing potential – but we need to
play around with a few things in order to
ensure our road safety message is clearly
defined.
On the day, Jourdan Douvos was the lucky
winner of a $50 iTunes voucher.

Moving on out with Year 12 Advisory. This term in Advisory year 12 students have
had the opportunity to imagine what life would
be like if they trialled moving out of home into
share houses.
Students have found rental properties, worked
out who they could live with and if unlimited
downloads is worth money. Whilst some have
chosen to save rent money and live on the
outskirts of Melbourne, others have traded up
on location and cut back on the food budget.
This week students trialled a shopping trip in
which they needed to balance a weeks worth
of groceries with a huge fully catered house
party. Here are some photos from our trip to
Piedemonte’s Supermarket.

Year 8 Sport Excel This term in year 8 sport excel, twenty students
chose to take part in an introduction to Western
Martial Arts. Just like the eastern schools of
Karate and Kung-Fu, WMA has a long tradition
of both mental and physical conditioning. The
training of knights first became formalised in the
middle ages and these manuscripts have been
studied and modernised by a range of schools
throughout the world.
This renaissance of WMA is in part due to the
popularity of movies such as Lord of the Rings
and TV series like Game of thrones, though if
you mention either in my class (or Star Wars) it's
ten punishment pushups for you. Yet whatever
brings a student to WMA, they soon discover
that the weapon we train with, the Longsword, is
one that demands focus, control and patience.
The class I am taking at FHS is an introduction
to the foundational principles of WMA and the
use of the sword, and not only are the students
learning to move more efficiently with a
sequence of Pilates inspired bio-conditioning
exercises, they also test their agility in combat.
We use foam boffers (think pool noodle with a
handle) to train with, and whilst safe these still
provide a good approximation of what a sword
can do.
Like any martial art, the focus is on defence, not
aggression, and as the students continue to
learn the foundational principles of the art, they
have developed a better mind-body connection
that will influence every aspect of their life.
I have been training with GLECA, a WMA
college based in Melbourne's CBD, for two
years, and I now compete at a state level in
monthly tournaments. For more info on what we
do, check out the website at glenlachlann.com or
get in contact with me at
Travis McKenzie.

Thanks from the FHS Feminist Collective! The support for our #FHS Fightback Kickstarter
campaign this week has been absolutely
incredible. We’ve received a huge amount of
positive emails about the project, as well as
generous donations from parents, teachers, past
and present students, and prominent community
members. As a result we have raised enough
money for our class to begin initial work on the
content of our teaching resource. We’re
absolutely thrilled!
Can you offer the FHS Feminist Collective a
writers’ retreat?
To this end, we are hoping to take some time to
focus intensely on our project by planning an
overnight stay somewhere that will inspire us
and allow us to lay the foundations for our
resource. Despite having raised $9,000 as we go
to press -we still need to reach $10,00 so
please keep spreading the word! - we need to
funnel the majority of those funds into printing
and production.
If you have somewhere you think might be
suitable for a group of about 10-12 people
(including two adults), or you know someone
who might, please contact Briony
via [email protected] to have a chat
about it.
Once again, thank you for your support and
generosity. It really has been overwhelming.
Dumbo Feather Excursion On Tuesday, the FHS Feminist Collective visited
the headquarters of ‘Dumbo Feather’ a
Melbourne-based magazine featuring
‘conversations with extraordinary people’. We
also met with the co-creators of ‘Young
Vagabond’, a magazine for young women
focused on ‘adventure, discovery and
acceptance’. It was a fantastic opportunity for the
class to meet other young women who are
pursuing ambitious goals (the founders of YV are
23 and 24 respectively!) and to see how the
world of publishing works. We were treated to a
delicious lunch in the small ballroom of the
‘White House’ (the second oldest building in St.
Kilda) talked about the project and what
feminism means to young women and men, and
left with an invitation to speak to YV about an
upcoming article. It was a fantastic experience
for us, as well as for the staff of the magazines
themselves, who emailed afterwards to tell me
that they were ‘inspired beyond measure’ by the
students in the class.

received in writing or by email before the second last week of this term; that is no later, than Friday
13th June. Please send/email notice of withdrawal to Dianne Wells or Tom Hoyle, stating the
student’s full name, year level, and instrument.
