Most mismatches meant that they recognized it as the wrong gender. Overall, the project was a success, and lead Slater to further academic success with grad school applications because of her present- ed research. 1#/$(23(&)4)#2-*&,/"(2&)3*&0(2(,)$Republicans in Congress are dragging

their feet about reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, authored by Joe Biden in 1993 and in effect since 1994. The act provides money for the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes and domestic abuse cases against women, as well as imposing mandatory restitution on those convicted of such crimes. The bill also provided victim support through crisis centers and educational programs. The bill has already been renewed twice,

but this time around, Republicans are protesting new provisions made by democrats that would extend the law’s protection to gay couples and illegal immigrants, who would be granted temporary visas for ongoing investigations. Others say that the law has turned into a beaurocratic nightmare that is used by some women to win custody of children without litigation and to get the upper hand in divorce proceedings.

Syria’s uprising began in 2011 as part of the Arab spring, the term for the revolution that occured in many mideast countries after the overthrow of the Egyptian president Mubarak. The preferred imagesharing application of 2012 not only appeals to artsy hipsters, but also to the general public as well. The enchanting element of Instagram lies in

its simplicity as well as its aesthetically pleasing design. Compromised of both form and function, it is no surprise that Instagram attracted both consumer and corporation. The worldrenowned father of social networking, Mark Zuckerberg, found himself lusting after Instagram’s

Autism awareness at SUNY PotsdamAutism affects nearly one in 88 children, and

the number of college students on the autism spectrum is increasing. The CDC notes that autism spectrum disorders, or ASDs “are a group of developmental disabilities that can cause sig9.'(+9)$ /%(.+;A$ (%FF-9.(+).%9$ +9C$ :#"+O.%4+;$challenges.” In a college environment, a student with autism can be overwhelmed. However, there are many resources for college students on the spectrum to succeed, with the Student Success Center here on campus being a great re

source. Another is the College Counseling Center, but there are probably others I’m forgetting to mention. There are a few stereotypes among those with ASDs and other mental handicaps as well, one major one being that those with mental disabilities aren’t bright. Actually, a few of the brightest people in the public, and some of our heroes are autistic. April is Autism Awareness Month, and I thought I would use the end of the month to start a dialogue about autism on campus. The fact is heightened as SUNY Pots

dam is a teacher education school, and with the prevalence of autism in the population, someone needs to launch the discussion. In closing, I’m not afraid to admit that I have a form of autism known as Asperger’s syndrome. Being on the spectrum hasn’t entirely held me back, but in fact has given me something to overcome.

Student Activists for Gender Equality host

Saturday, May 5 there will be a Take Back the Night March hosted by Student Activists for Gender Equality (SAGE). The march will start at 4 p.m. in front of the Barrington Student Union where there will be an hour of musical performances and brief informative speeches about sexual assault and domestic abuse. From there, we will walk through campus and town as a group for about 20 minutes, returning to the Student Union for a moment of silence in memory of the victims of assault, rape and violence.

We will be joined in our march by representatives from the St. Lawrence Renewal House, and, although this is a free event, donations to the Renewal House are encouraged. This event is open to all members of the college and community and will be held rain or shine. !+7#$ I+(7$ )"#$ P.<")$ '4/)$ +11#+4#C$ .9$ )"#$

On Sunday, April 22, the Middle Ground club put together a cookout to help raise awareness for Earth Day behind the student Union. Although it is usually considered just one day, Earth Day’s purpose is to observe the need to protect the Earth’s environment and raise awareness on sustainable living.Despite the very cold tempera

tures that afternoon, there was everything needed to help you warm up. There were free burgers, hot dogs and other side dishes complements of PACES food service who donated all of the food, and plenty of live music to get you up and dance around. The four live performances con

sisted of The Crispy Critters, Retro Pilot, The A Sharp Arrangements and The Spicy Getz. The Critters opened things up with a strong

performance. These guys never cease to amaze me and can always bring a great show with lots of experimental jams. I was also really impressed with Retro Pilot. Personally, they get better every time I see them. It’s a true rock ‘n’ roll concert experience that packs a lot of heat. Third to go in the afternoon was the a cappella group The A Sharp Arrangements, who came on stage to bring an impressive performance and continued the laid back feel. Lastly, The Spicy Getz took the !"#$%&'()*!'+#!',-'./!"'"*,%')%#/ing these guys and they put on a great performance full of energy. There are many actions we can

commit to that allows us to live in a more sustainable environment. For example, RJ Mattimore, the sustainability advisor on campus, set up a Brita water dispenser to promote nonbottled water. Garden Share set up a table that promotes local and organic food services in the Potsdam area. The SUNY Pots

dam sustainability project promotes ways for sustainable living on campus. The sustainability interns spoke of this project at the event and talked about some of the things this project includes, such as buying locally grown foods, alternative energy and future sustainability goals on campus. 0*")'.1#2!'+%%3'4#!"'#55/6#7)

ing, sometimes the best way to destress is going out and having a good time with the friends and family you love doing the things that are penniless. Earth Day is a time to take a step back with work and school related problems and just look at what is going around you in your environment. However, our environment is not going to stay this way forever if we continue to take advantage of it. From this, it can help us realize the gifts that nature gives us, and also help us realize that we have to do our part to keep it this way.

Middle Ground raises environmental awareness on campus

Battle of the bands took place on Friday, April 20, wrapping up this semester’s installment of the competition. Each of the acts performed with great energy and coherence, <8"'5813'68"."'=/!61'0%22!'%19%9'up taking the title of champion for the night.Kicking off the event was solo

artist Ben Gonella, whose altfolk stylings were a heartfelt warmup for the rest of the competition. As people trickled in throughout the set, Gonella’s performance became ,6/%' 761.9%1">' %19*1$'+*")' !6,%'wellexecuted originals that would !%%,' 817)#/#7"%/*!"*7' 46/' #' ./!"'time competitor.Following Gonella was the win

ner of round one, Five Mile Line. The group brought its usual brand of high energy rock tunes, rounding its set with covers ranging from LCD Soundsystem, The Clovers,

and even Adele. Despite the band’s laid back nature, the solid musicianship coming from each of the three members made the renditions especially exciting during solo sections.LETTERS brought its own brand

of alternativerockfolk afterwards, .22*1$' ?#73!"/%%"!' @*$)"728<' +*")'full sound representative of the four talented members’ abilities as band members. Perhaps the most delightfully lighthearted moment of the night came with Brandon Felt’s inclusion on clarinet during the band’s rendition of the Beatles classic “When I’m 64.” Wrapping up the night were wellrehearsed sets from both Arson Wells and harpist Mikaela Davis. “We came in with the mindset

solely to play and have fun, rather than to compete this time,” said Jim Martin, bassist/vocalist of Arson Wells. The band, having formed in February and written its entire catalog in practices since, exhib*"%9'#'761.9%17%'*19*7#"*A%'64'")*!'

mindset. “Playing last helped a lot too,” added guitarist/vocalist Tom Jodice. “We seemed to get a much different response from the crowd since they were able to see our full set.” Indeed the crowd seemed much more involved compared to ")%'<#19;!'5%/46/,#17%'*1' ")%'./!"'round, garnering woos, catcalls and even some side chatter in the front row regarding the prowess of freshman Mike Porcello’s drumming. While victors of the Battle usu

ally receive a $300 gift card to Northern Music, Arson Wells opted to forgo the card for some studio time in Madstop’s facilities. Having worked up a repertoire of 14 songs in their time together, the band members are anxious for an opportunity to get some of the tunes onto something tangible. Be sure to get an ear on Arson Wells’s punk ditties when the band performs at Hurley’s Nightclub on May 1, at radio station WAIH’s annual barbeque on the twelfth and again when the band returns to action in the fall!

SES and Springfestgoers outsmarted the miserable Potsdam weather and made the best of it on Saturday, April 21.Word had quickly spread that Good

Legend of the Racquetteer

!"#$%&'(#(")*+,-.&/0,1*"

The year was 1927; the Racquette was in danger of not being funded due to their rival paper, the Intergrator, wanting funds for a 2 ft by 5 ft paper. But one man was going to save our paper. That man was John Glub. No more than a copy editor and a simple writing major, he was destined for the history books. Glub knew this was an uphill

battle. The funds to start a newspaper required rubbing elbows with some nefarious gentlemen. Some minds couldn’t be swayed away from funding the Intergrator, since they had never read past the police blotter, let alone even heard of a real “newspaper.” Nevertheless, Glub understood these business folk and knew that like all men of the parlor, they loved cricket, scotch and highstakes games. The gentlemen’s sports of today are the street urchins’ solitaire of yesteryear. So Glub cleverly arranged a Shanghai back alley ball game for nobles to settle the qualms. On January 30, 1927, Glub challenged the Clarkson Intergraders leader to a “wallball/badminton hybrid death match” (rough translation from Shanghai) with the stakes being the Racquette getting its funds. Well, the stenographer, on principle, couldn’t allow such an ill translated word into the records, so they voted on a new name. There were several hearings; it was tabled for four weeks, moved to the 1''.2$ +,3&$-"45$ +'$ +,3$ +"-637$89+3.$intense debate, it was to be called “The Bureaucratic Nightmare.” But John Glub hated that and called it Racquetball. This brass knuckles required, cups optional match was to decide the fate of the publication.Glub walked into the arena to

But what’s this! He’d fallen! Before entering the ring he was tripped up and was on the ground. Classic Clarksonite. His replacement, a 7’1” man known as “The Meat Grinder,” has to take over. “The Meat Grinder” walks up to the Racquetteer, extended his arm and cracked every knuckle in Glub’s hand from the simple shake. Glub was in trouble, but he knew his speed would be his greatest asset; wear down the Grinder and then sweep the leg. The ref motioned to Glub to see if he is ready, then to the Grinder. The whistle was blown! The Grinder threw the ball up and overhanded it right toward Glub’s head. Glub’s down! Glub’s down! The ref starts counting him out and the Grinder replaces the cue ball with a Racquetball, saying, “If he dies, he dies.” The Intergrator’s start celebrating! Glub is pronounced dead but was awarded one point because the Grinder’s serve was a double fault. The Racquetteer won the match and the paper was funded! His ghost haunts Maxcy.

A peak at the 2012 NFL draft!"#$%&'()*

+(*,-)./,)*0&1-),$-Over a threeday span this week,

the NFL draft will begin. The annual draft will be hosted in Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The draft is set up by a compensatory method: the worst team gets the number one pick. Here are the !"#$%&'$#()*+,$ (-$./$"#(-("-,$ !01!$kick off Thursday. As many know, the Indianapolis

Colts posted a 214 record this past season, granting them the number one selection. The Colts decided this offseason not to exercise Peyton Manning’s bonus, leading to his release. The team opts to choose Stanford’s Andrew Luck. Luck could have entered the draft in 2011, but chose to stay to complete his degree. Luck’s numbers from last year were incredible. He post

ed above a 70 percent completion rate and connected 37 touchdowns. Stanford has four major players entering the draft: QB Andrew Luck, G David DeCastro, OT Jonathan Martin and TE Coby Fleener, all 2(33$4'$+'3')!'5$(-$!0'$%6+!$6"7-5'68$Last year’s Heisman winner,

9"4'6!$:6(;%-$<<<,$"7!$;6".$=1/3"6,$is going to the Washington Redskins. The Redskins had to deal four future draft picks to the St. Louis Rams to lock in the second pick. RG3 posted great stats also, posting above a 70 percent completion rate, 36 touchdowns and rushed nine touchdowns himself. RG3 has an accurate arm and is a speed threat. Many compare him to Michael Vick.Next up: the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings have ProBowler back Adrian Peterson, so the team does not need top back Trent Richard

son. Instead, the Vikings plan on strengthening their weak defense. Their defense allowed an average of 28.1 points per game, ranking them 31st in the league. The team may elect for OT Matt Kalil, out of USC. Kalil is regarded as one of the top tackles entering the draft. The fourth pick is for the Cleve

land Browns. The Browns have two options: go for a quarterback or go for a halfback. Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill could be an option for the Browns. Tannehill posted a 60 percent completion rate with 29 touchdowns. The top back is Alabama’s Trent Richardson. Richardson nearly ran for 1700 yards and rushed in 21 touchdowns. Now, the Browns do face an issue. Is Colt McCoy ready to be their everyday QB? With the loss of Peyton Hillis, do they go for Richardson? It will be a tough pick for Cleveland.>0'$ %;!0$ #()*$ 4'3"-?+$ !"$ 1$ 6'

structured Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs had a great offseason, locking in WR Vincent Jackson, CB Eric Wright and OG Carl Nicks. The Bucs look to add more defense. too much, but here are more top name prospects that will be in the draft. The three big wide outs in the

draft are Justin Blackmon, Kendall Wright and Michael Floyd. Blackmon is slated as the top wide out; he caught 121 catches, over 1500 yards and received 18 touchdowns. He also won MVP for the 2012 Fiesta Bowl. Floyd had 100 recep

tions, over a thousand yards and nine touchdowns. Wright, coming from Baylor, caught over 100 receptions, over 1600 yards and hit 14 touchdowns. As for defense, the top three

prospects are Fletcher Cox, Melvin Ingram and Quinton Coples. There is a great deal of optimism that Melvin Ingram is drafted by the New York Jets. Ingram is a highly touted player, and possibly the best pass rusher in the 2012 draft. Coples also is a top tier defense prospect. Coples nailed 55 tackles, half of them by himself. Lastly, Fletcher Cox is seen as top defensive tackle. He also will most likely be selected (-$!0'$%6+!$6"7-58Lastly, it seems that this draft

contains a lot of quarterbacks. Here

are some other quarterback prospects: Brock Osweiler, Brandon Weeden and Kirk Cousins. Osweiler has been seen as the successor to Peyton Manning in Denver or as the future quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. Weeden, an exbaseball prospect, pursued his desire in football. Weeden will go much later in the draft. Cousins could also end up in Denver as the successor to Peyton Manning.Thursday night, NFL commis

sioner Roger Goodell will take the podium and begin a 72hour 561;!8$>0'$)0''6+$1-5$A''6+$2(33$%3'$throughout Radio City Hall on every pick. The long awaited draft starts April 26, 2012 and ends April 28, 2012.

B!$%6+!,$!0'$CDEEFCDEC$G=B$+'1son looked like it was never going to happen. After a 161day lockout the NBA season was shortened from 82 games to 66 games. Now that all the playoff teams are decided and only two games left in the regular season the drama that comes with the NBA playoffs is upon us. In the East the Chicago Bulls are the number one seed and have clinched home court advantage up until the

NBA Finals. Reigning MVP Derrick Rose leads the Bulls. Rose has missed over 25 of his team’s games this season due to a wide array of injuries. When healthy, Rose and the Bulls look to be one of the favorites to come out of the East. The second seed in the East belongs to the Miami Heat. The Heat this year have shown that the big three of James, Wade and Bosh can work together to win games. LeBron is having another MVP worthy season as he leads the Heat in points, assists and rebounds. On the season

James is averaging 27.1 points, 6.2 assists and 7.9 rebounds per game. The offseason work that LeBron put in with legend Hakeem Olajuwon can be seen in his performance on the court. James is taking less threes this season and taking the ball to the rim more often. This has translated into W’s for the Heat and is what they need from their leader if the wants to win a title. The third seed in the East will go to young squad of the Indiana Pacers. Indiana is led by long time Pacer Danny Granger. However, the bulk of the workload falls on three players all under the age of 25. Paul George, Darren Collinson and Roy Hibbert will have to step up big and play with experience beyond their age if they hope to make it deep into the #31/";;+8$>0'$;"76!0$1-5$%;!0$+''5$(+$between the Boston Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks. At the moment, the Celtics are a game up on the Hawks for the fourth seed. The Celtics are getting old, and if the original big three hope to win another title they need stellar play from point guard Rajon Rondo. Rondo’s best attribute is his ability to get his teammates involved in the game as he averages 11.6 assists per game. The Magic hold a two game lead on both New York and Philly, but are without star center Dwight Howard for the rest of the playoffs due to back surgery. Orlando is in deep trouble and will need some no name players to step up big if they want to advance into the second round of the playoffs. If you’re the Knicks you have to go out and win your last two games and hope you get help from Orlando and Philadelphia. Compared to as if you were the sixth seed then you would play a young team in the Pacers. The key to the Knicks winning in the postseason depends on whether Amare and Carmelo can coexist on the court together. Both players seem to need to be the goto guy when they are on the court. A simple solution to this is to limit the amount of minutes the two play together throughout the game. HighJ/(-?$ ?7165$B-56'$ <?7"5131$ 3'15+$the 76ers. Philadelphia likes to keep the game at a fast pace so look for them to run into trouble when going up against a team that has a

New inhalable caffeine shot!"#$"%&'()"*+(

,#"--&./0#1/When the Inhalable Foods com

pany released its Aeroshot: Breathable Caffeine Shot, it quickly caught my attention since it is a disposable tube that gives seven breathable doses to its user anytime. Many have tried to make caffeine easier to ingest either by drink shots, dissolving strips and even chewing gum, but inhalation is an untapped and frankly taboo market....and as human beings we are drawn to the forbidden fruit.I ordered one shot on their web

site for $2.99 with free shipping, and shortly after the order was placed I was sent an email informing me that it would take roughly 10 days before the product would be shipped “due to high demand.“ This shipping delay was a minor annoyance, but for three dollars it wasn’t worth my time to get all hot and bothered so I just dealt with it until the two weeks passed and I

had the product in my hands. The product itself is a small plas

tic tube not larger or heavier than a highlighter with simple instructions on each side that say “pull” and “breath,” which is exactly what I did. When I took a breath with this product to my lips, it sent me into a .#/%01)%$+!$!0&!$"&($2&3$23#4$5'-&surable. Finally, when the coughing subsided I was left with a taste in my mouth similar to that of a lemon that had been repeatably doused in household cleaning products. The only factor of this product

that I could see in a positive light is the energy it gives after several frequent drags. I certainly felt alert and energized roughly 20 minutes later, but the gnarly taste remained on my tongue equally as long. If you are bored of energy drinks

and coffee and want to give this product a try then go ahead; it will certainly make you appreciate the taste of coffee and Red Bull forever after.

Darvish dazzles

This past Tuesday marked only the seventh time in MLB history that two Japanese born pitchers squared off against one another. The Yankees’ Hiroki Kuroda lost a two zero contest to Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish. Darvish threw eight and a third scoreless innings while adding ten strikeouts. For the season now Yu is 30 with a 2.42 ERA and has 24 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched. Darvish was one of the most coveted free agent pitchers this offseason. Look for Trout to get the call to the bigs sooner rather than later if the Angels’ offensive woes continue. The Yankees big acquisition this offseason was hard throwing righty Michael Pineda from the Mariners. This past Wednesday the Yankees announced that Pineda will undergo seasonending surgery to repair a tear in his throwing shoulder. This is a big blow for the Bombers, as their pitching staff was already suspect to begin with. Andy Pettitte has been looking good in the minors but still is only throwing 8085 pitches an outing. Skipper Joe Girardi has said previously that he will not bring Andy up to the majors until he is throwing 95100 pitches a start. This all means that we won’t see Pettitte back in pinstripes for at least a couple turns. So where do the Yankees go to replace the production of Pineda? The Yankees will look for young studs Ivan Nova and Phil Hughes to pick up the slack. Meta World Peace wasn’t so

peaceful when he threw an elbow directly into the head of James Harden. Harden has been diagnosed with a concussion and has yet been cleared to play.
