Impact damage caused by fork-lift trucks or other moving equipmentagainst rack-uprights shall be avoided by appropriate safetymeasures. The minimum requirements for the protection of uprightsshall be as follows:An upright protector with a height of not less than 400mm(15.75 inches) should be positioned at the end upright of each run ofracking between cross-aisles. The upright protector must be designedfor energy absorption of at least 400 Nm (3540 pound-force-inches)in any direction at any height between 0.10m and 0.40m.
As part of the continuous development of the A-SafeRackGuard safety product range, the Leg Protecta is asimple, yet innovative, protection device for safeguardingpallet racks. With energy absorption in mind, under impactloading, this rack upright protector is designed to deform inshape to dissipate the force and return to its original shape and condition once the load is removed, without causingdamage to the rack upright column. There is also minimaldamage to vehicles. Leg Protecta is manufactured to thesame high standard of quality, strength and sustainabilityas that of all the A-Safe safety barrier products.
Tested and Certified
In 2012, the RackGuard became the first polymeric rack leg protectorin the world to be TUV approved less than two weeks after it had beenindependently tested to achieve the FEM 10.2.02 certification. Now it hasthe EN 15 512 standard, RackGuard should be at the top of your list forprotection of your racking.
To become certified, a four front impact test is performed with theRackGuard Leg Protecta attached to a medium duty 80mm x 80mmx 2.0mm steel racking upright. A 40kg mass is dropped onto theRackGuard at 9.8m per second from a one metre height, equating to aforce of 400 newtons. This can be likened to the RackGuard being able toabsorb the force of a 1.5 tonne vehicle travelling at 10 kilometres per hour.
Zero deflection on the racking was achieved on both tests.
Twice the force, Twice as goodA-Safe are always looking to go one better. We asked TUV to doublethe load to 800 newtons of force and perform the test again. At twicethe impact force required by both the EN15 512 and FEM 10.2.02 standards, the RackGuard again gave fantastic protection, andachieved deflection well within the required limit to pass the test.

Technical Did You Know Five Times Safer
A-Safe’s in-house testing system is even more rigorous than theFEM 10.2.02 and EN 15 512 tests. We perform the same impacttest on our in house test rig, but drop a load of 40kg on to it fivetimes in a row, and again zero deflection is achieved. This givesRackGuard a proven five times safety factor than normal rackingprotection.

Applications and BenefitsThe barriers are used in warehouse and distribution environments wherepalletised/un-palletised goods or products are stored on light or heavy dutyracking systems.The single rail version is the lighter duty product of the two versions. It is suitable foruse in areas where manual or electric powered pallet trucks, order pickers, counterbalance trucks up to 2500kg and reach trucks are operating in the racking aisles.The double rail version is the heavier duty product of the two versions. It offers thesame benefits and may be used for the same applications as the single rail version ofthe barrier and like the single rail version is used in warehouse and distributionenvironments where palletised/un-palletised goods or products are stored on light orheavy duty racking systems. The addition of the second rail increases the height of thebarrier and makes it suitable for providing impact protection and use in areas wherevehicles with higher centres of gravity than those that the single rail version of thebarrier is designed to be compatible with are in operation. In addition for use with thevehicles listed for the single rail version the double rail version of the barrier iscompatible for use in areas where counter balance fork lift trucks up to 4500kg arepresent.
SINGLE & DOUBLERAIL RACK ENDBARRIERS
The Rack End Barrier 200/90 range is the most recent and most popular productin the racking protection range. The barriers are fixed one piece units and areavailable in single and double rail versions. Both versions can be supplied inlengths from 750 – 2500mm to suit nearly all makes and types of racking installedin either single or double bays. The end posts are based on the design of the200mm OD A-Safe Bollard products with 225mm rotating collars to absorb anddeflect contact forces. The single or double horizontal rails between the twoposts have a substantial 90 x 90mm section.

The fitting of rotating circular wearcollars at the bottom of the 200mmOD end posts on both the singleand double rail versions of thebarrier provides additional impactprotection and absorption againstglancing impacts from vehiclewheels or low vehicle skirts.
Countersunk fixings are used toprevent both post fixing shear andwheel surface damage whenvehicle wheels accidentally passover the surface of the post baseplate.
