DuBois vs.
Washington
You are an African American born into slavery in
1845. When you are in your 20s, the US Congress
ratifies the 13th,14th, and 15th Amendments. Still, you
know that even though the laws have changed, the
hearts and minds of certain European Americans in
your community have not changed.
We will now explore some of your options through
the perspectives of DuBois and Washington.
Scenario
During your monthly visit to the nearest town, you pick up 2 pamphlets. You have difficulty reading them because you were not allowed to learn to read before the 13th Amendment. So, you visit with your minister and he
reads the pamphlets to you.
Read & Reflect
Work in pairs to read the pamphlets.
In your pairs, one of you will assume the persona of Washington, and the other DuBois.
Fill out your person’s “Talking Heads” graphic organizer (back of Venn Diagram), then switch.
Reflect:
What are the pros of Washington?
Cons?
What are the cons of DuBois?
