2 JIBUsed for upwind sailing, made from strands of carbon fibre and Kevlar (an incredibly light, strong fibre used in flak-jackets) sandwiched in a plastic film.
3 MAST62ft (18.9m) high, and made in two sections. The stiffness varies along its length to allow the mast shape to be altered to increase performance. Can also rotate for improved mainsail control.
4 MAINSAILThe powerhouse of the boat - big enough to accommodate four parked London buses!
5 DAGGERBOARDPrevents the boat from slipping side-ways.
6 HULLS40ft long to fit in a standard container for easy transportation.
7 RUDDERSSteering fins at the back which are attached to a stick called a tiller. There are two because, as the boat heels over, one rudder often lifts out of the water.
8 TRAMPOLINEHeld taut between the two hulls and made of lightweight but tough nylon mesh, this allows the crew to move from side to side.

R A C I N GThe start is one of the most exciting parts of any sailing race, and with such short races, (each lasts between 10-12 minutes), a good start is a vital part of winning tactics. Each race is started with a four-minute countdown. If any boat jumps the line before the start gun, they will have to restart – a substantial penalty!
T H E S T A R T :Teams use all of their tactical prowess to out-maneuver each other and can call a protest on the water if they think another boat has infringed the rules. Umpires are on the water like football referees and can give penalties, which are normally a penalty turn.
D U R I N G T H E R A C I N G :
Depending on the number of boats and wind conditions, Race Management may decide to run racing over different shaped courses around a number of large, inflatable coloured marks. A typical course could look like this.
T H E C O U R S E :First past the post wins – it’s as simple as that! The winner of each race will get 10 points, second place is nine, and so on. The last race of each Act counts for double points, putting the pressure on for a great finale!
