THE JEWISH CENTER OF THE HAMPTONS is delighted to welcome
ARIEL MILAN-POLISARas our Rabbinic Student in Residence
JANUARY 5–7, 2018We hope you will join us for Shabbat services and
introduce yourself to Ariel as she shares the beauty of Shabbat with our JCOH family.
Ariel Milan-Polisar is a 2nd year rabbinical student at the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City. After a wonderful year spent in Israel for her first year of school, she's happy to be back in the States and close to her hometown of Irvington, NY. Her passion for Judaism was fostered at URJ Eisner Camp, where she spent 13 summers as a camper and staff member. Ariel received her B.A. in Sociology from Brandeis University. After graduation, she was a Youth Engagement Specialist at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, MA. Ariel is currently a 5th grade teacher at Temple Shaaray Tefila and is a Shabbat coach for OneTable. When she can find some free time, she enjoys baking, knitting and seeing as much theater as possible.
RABBINIC STUDENT IN RESIDENCE
BEGINNING JANUARY 1, 2018 OUR FRIDAY NIGHT KABBALAT SHABBAT SERVICE
WILL BE HELD AT 6:00PM
A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOSHUA FRANKLIN / SHABBAT REFLECTIONS: MENTAL HEALTH
2
In the wake of my Rosh HaShanah sermon on mental health (https://jcoh.org/high-holy-day-sermons), dozens from our community have come forward to share their personal struggles with mental illness, and the challenges of living with family and friends who suffer. We all know people close to us who wrestle with the pain of anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, addiction, and there are surely those whose stories are hidden because of the unrelenting societal stigma. From our high schools plagued with rampant adolescent anxiety, to our nursing facilities afflicted with high rates of geriatric depression, we see mental illness in every sector of society. I’m not just pointing out an unfixable problem, I wholeheartedly believe that we can move the dial.
There are a number of resources available in the Hamptons for those searching for outlets of support. I encourage you explore the directory of service providers for East Hampton and Southampton (http://www.southamptontownny.gov/DocumentCenter/View/82), which includes a comprehensive list of facilities, professionals, and specialists in the Hamptons. Though we too as the Jewish Center of the Hamptons are working to become a resource and support for mental health needs within our community.
Back in November, the Jewish Center of the Hamptons hosted its first conversation on mental health. We shared our stories, studied Jewish texts, and heard from community members who work on the front lines of the mental health field. Jordana Davidson, LMSW shared with us the challenges she sees daily with those living in assisted living facilities and those who are beginning to contemplate end-of-life issues. Dr. Sharyn Lawall discussed the mental health problems within the Southampton School District, many of which she noted, are the result of trauma faced within homes. The mental health conversation was not just a one-off event. In addition to the continued conversations outside the walls of the synagogue, we will be hosting a second conversation on mental health on January 27th. Together, we will begin to create action steps so that the Jewish Center of the Hamptons can be a center for supporting mental health needs in the Hamptons.

WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY
When those whom we hold close to us die, we yearn to find a way to consecrate and honor their memory. As we sit in our beautiful landmark sanctuary, we are warmed by its loveliness, soulfulness and openness to the world of the spirit and the physical world around us. We feel ever closer to God.
You can enshrine the memory of your loved ones by inscribing their name(s) on a pew plaque in the sanctuary. In that sacred space you will connect to the bonds between them and the divine.
A Pew Plaque in our Main Sanctuary may be purchased for $5,000.
Membership helps support the wide range of programs and activities offered at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons. Your dues also help maintain the beauty of our sanctuary and the upkeep of our buildings and grounds. We encourage everyone to take full advantage of the wide array of religious, intellectual, cultural and social events at the JCOH.
Take this opportunity to dedicate a Torah Commentary in honor of a loved one, to celebrate a special occasion, or in memory of a loved one.
Celebrate a Simcha or special occasion by sponsoring the Kiddush following Shabbat services on Saturday morning. Please note that 3% of all donations are given to MAZON – A Jewish Response to Hunger.

Honoring the memory of our loved ones who have passed beyond the threshold of life offers us an opportunity to pay homage to those who made the world a better place because they lived in it. It is a time to strengthen the bonds between here and the hereafter in our hearts and minds.
A Memorial Plaque in our small sanctuary may be purchased for $1,000.

INSCRIBE A STONE
We have refurbished the Donald and Barbara Zucker Patio, with stones designed in the shape of the Star of David. These stones can be engraved in honor of a special person or moment in our lives, or in memory of a loved one.
Help us raise needed funds to support our yearly operating budget. This project will be ongoing for years to come, allowing future generations the opportunity to participate.
