From The Rabbi
Tisha B’Av, the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av,
is the day on the Jewish calendar on which we mourn
for all of the calamities that have afflicted the Jewish
People throughout history. According to tradition, it
was on this day in 596 BCE and in 70 CE that the Temples in
Jerusalem were destroyed. These were days on which the Jewish
People suffered great humiliation, the loss of national independence
and exile from our homeland.
On Tisha B’Av in the year 135 CE, the Roman emperor Hadrian
established a heathen temple on the site of the Temple ruins and
re-established Jerusalem as a pagan city, into which the Jews were
forbidden to enter. The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 is
also said to have occurred with many of the atrocities committed
against the Jews during the Crusades and, in our own era during the
Holocaust.
Even though we are privileged to live in a time when so much of
Jerusalem has been rebuilt and once again we have sovereignty
within our homeland, it is still important for us to appropriately mark
this day with the traditional observances of mourning and reading
from the Book of Lamentations (a Biblical dirge that decries the
desolation of the once magnificent city of Jerusalem). Tisha B’Av is
a fast day on which we refrain from the luxury of wearing leather,
the comfort of bathing and the joy of marital relations. By observing
these prohibitions, we have the opportunity to personally feel the
pain and the loss that is an integral part of the history that makes us
who we are as Jews. Throughout the year, the rituals of our tradition
help us to bring the joys as well as the sorrows of Jewish history into
our own contemporary experience of life.
In the Book of Ecclesiastes it is written: “There is a time and
purpose for everything. A time to be born, a time to die, a time to
dance and a time to mourn. We will continue to mourn until we, as a
people, are living in peace with our fellow Jews and in peace with
our neighbors.

Thank You!
To just say “thank you” to my congregation friends is simply not enough.
Your companionship and thoughtfulness was Unbelievable. The surgery and recovery have not been fun,
but I would not have recovered as quickly without L’Dor V’Dor people.
You are the best and I am deeply appreciative of your caring and incredible kindness.

Presidential Matters by Lysa Lopater
Wow…my first column! So many things I want to
say…but I am not one to get too wordy. A big
THANK YOU to Bob Stern, while he has resigned
as Co-President, he still remains a valuable member
of our Board. I hope my tenure as Co-President
(however long that may be) will be as notable as yours has been.
To Steve Aronowitz: The year you became President of LNJC, you
recruited me onto the Board of Trustees…who would have thought?
I am looking forward to being your partner in guiding Congregation
L’Dor V’Dor forward, and learning from your experience.
Another huge THANK YOU to the members of the Board of Trustees
who have ended their terms. It has been an honor to serve with you.
And lastly to the current members of the Board, I look forward to
working with everyone to keep our congregation strong and thriving.
I also want to give thanks to my sons, Josh and Adam, and my
boyfriend, Jon McCrorie for supporting me in this new position. They
are terrific support and very understanding of the time demands this
will now require.
The Future: What will it bring?
I am writing this the day after my first Calendar Meeting. Last night,
under the leadership of Ellen Charlop, we wrote in many events for
the coming year. We will have our Sukkot Dinner, Chanukah Party,
Shabbat Across America, Purim Party and a few Membership
Committee events. We wrote in the monthly Shabbat events (Birthday
and Anniversary Celebrations; The Shabbat Morning Experience;
Alternative Services). Observances for Yom HaShoah, Yom
HaAtzmaut, Yom HaZikaron, and the Salute to Israel Parade are
already on the calendar! We will be adding the educational and social
gatherings sponsored by our Men’s Club, Sisterhood and Israel
Advocacy Committees. The year is filling up fast. To use Steve’s
line. “The lights are on almost every night.”
I look forward to this year…and beyond…with my congregation
family. I always feel at home at Congregation L’Dor V’Dor. The
support and love I receive, I hope I give back in return.

Message From
Cantor Joshua Shron
There’s just something about summer that brings out a
smile in most of us.
Think about it…fun in the sun, backyard barbecues, music under the stars,
festivals, fireworks, relaxation, summer camp, lemonade, pools and
beaches…quite simply, it’s a glorious time of year!
But, as my teachers in yeshiva would tell us every single year on the last
day of school, “Judaism doesn’t take a summer vacation” (we all had the
speech memorized by the fifth grade). A relaxed time of year shouldn’t
equal an empty synagogue.
So this summer, we’re doing our part by bringing SUMMER FUN to the
synagogue calendar!
Backyard BBQ? Check. Join us on Friday night, July 29 th for our annual
“Shabbabecue” – a great summer tradition now taking place at our very own
synagogue. We’ll meet at 6:00 p.m. for burgers, hot dogs, etc., and then join
together for a lively Kabbalat Shabbat service at 7:30 p.m. Come for the
food and friends, and stay for the fun!
Fun in the sun…by the pool? Check. On Saturday evening, August 20 th,
we’ll gather at the home of Ellen and Gordon Charlop for another
L’Dor V’Dor tradition, our “Poolside Havdalah”. A short Mincha service,
an enjoyable Seuda Shlishit with friends and a moving Havdalah by the
pool are all part of this not-to-be-missed evening. Mark your calendar!
Great music? Check. Lots to tell you about. First, if you’re a Great Neck
resident (or are friends with someone who can get you a guest pass), be sure
not to miss SAFAM at Stepping Stone Park on Sunday, July 20th. They’re a
fantastic Jewish American band who have been performing together for
more than 30 years. I’ve seen Safam several times and can promise you,
you’ll love them! They’re talented, spirited and lots of fun. Hope to see you
there!
More music! Our High Holiday choir will begin preparing for the upcoming
holiday season on Tuesday, August 2nd, and we’re always looking for new
members! Contact me ([email protected]) if you’d like to sing with us this
year. Finally, we’re closing out the summer with a rockin’ good time on
Friday evening, August 26th, when we’ll be significantly stepping up our
game during that night’s Shabbat service. Since Shabbat begins late that
evening, we’re inviting a few of the musicians within our congregation to
lend their talents to our service. We’ll be singing many of the same
melodies as we do every week – accompanied by a live band! Enjoy a lively
evening of singing, dancing and fun right in our sanctuary!
Relaxation? Check. Well, at least for me. With three of my five children
spending various parts of the summer away from home, Mairov and I plan
to take it nice and easy this season. That is, until my three-year-old wakes
up from his nap. Wishing one and all a wonderful summer!
Cantor Josh Shron
Yasher Koach!
We are very proud of Alex Gottlieb, the son of
Stacey and Jason Gottlieb, members of our
congregation. Alex was a student this year in
the aleph class of the Hebrew School at
Temple Israel in Great Neck with whom we
have entered into a partnership. Alex received
three awards at the end of the year
ceremony. Alex earned his place as a member
of the 13 Mitzvot Club by attending 8 services
and 5 Family Education Programs with either a
parent or a grandparent. He was recognized as a Judaic Scholar by the
METNY region of United Synagogue for demonstrating outstanding
academic achievement, behavior and class attendance and meeting the
school's requirements for participating in services and Family
Education Programs. Alex also achieved an award for excellence in
attendance.
Conversations with the Cantor By Cantor Joshua Shron
Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you our next generation of Israel advocates.
This past year, “Conversations with the Cantor” focused its bi-weekly discussions on
the subject of Israel and anti-Semitism. From the comforts of Starbucks Coffee in
Little Neck (with occasional meetings at the synagogue over pizza), our group
discussed the history of the State of Israel, the nearly-miraculous innovations that
have emerged from the minds of Israeli citizens, and, more importantly, the rampant
anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiment that these teens will likely encounter once
they reach universities throughout the country. We learned about how to respond to
those who believe Israel should be wiped off the map, spoke via Skype to an active
student advocate for Israel studying at the University of Washington, even began
planning a potential web site as a resource to help young people answer Israel’s
critics, and much more!
From the students:
“This year I learned the importance of being educated about Israel. This is the
country where the history of my religion lies, and the place that holds my future.
This class has made me appreciate everything that Israel has to offer and made me
want to get involved.”
“Conversations with the Cantor has increased my knowledge of Israel and Judaism.
It has been a wonderful experience.”
“’Conversations’ has taught me about the negative things others may say about
Israel, but more importantly, taught me what to say to those haters.”
“This year has been great...a good mixture of learning about Israel and fun.”
We completed this successful year on June 21st with a celebratory dinner at Burger
Bistro in Great Neck. Yasher Koach to our dedicated “regulars”: Kyle Berlinsky,
Rebecca Bressler, Eric Fidler, Jared Hodes, Ryan Hodes, Jacob Neiderman and
Rachel Schneider. It is an honor to learn with you – and from you – each and every
time we get together. We look forward to welcoming even more of our community’s
young adults when we return in the fall!

Chavurah Group Review By Elaine Fleischman and Judy Samuels
Mazel Tov to the establishment of the first 2016
L’Dor V’Dor Chavurah Group!
On Sunday evening, June 26, 10 members of
L’Dor V’Dor met at Judy Samuels home to discuss,
create and establish a Chavurah Group (friendship
group) that would bring people together of similar
interests.
We put together a 6-month calendar of exciting and
interesting ventures. Each member selected a month and
venue, thereby giving us all ownership in the Chavurah
group. The following is our calendar. Exact dates will be
announced.
The Chavurah Group is limited to eighteen (18) men,
women, singles, and couples over the age of 55. The
composition of the group will include young in
spirit, adventuresome, and the inquisitive. We need 8
more people.
Join with other members of your synagogue family each
month and fill your calendar with walking tours,
museum visits, movies, musical adventures and so much
more.
If you are interested, please call Elaine Fleischman at

Why I go to the Synagogue By Irwin Tobin
I go to synagogue now because I never went as a child, and only went
to the synagogue for my Bar Mitzvah lessons, and I cannot remember
anything that I may have learned then.
I do remember my Bar Mitzvah morning. It was a beautiful sunny day
and all was going well. My parents, brother and I walked over to
Plimpton Ave. Shul with my grandparents. I thought everything went
well with the service until a member of the congregation came over to
me and told me how terrible I was and berated me. I ran out of the
synagogue crying like a baby. Even today, I fear certain parts of the
service and my knees shake.
I did not go back into a synagogue until my Aufruf on Thursday
morning, Jan. 16, 1958.
When Janet and I got married, I attended synagogue with her and her
family for the holidays. In 1966, we joined Marathon Jewish
Community Center as a family and that’s when my world changed.
We became very active right away. Our social world enlarged and to
this day, we still have very close friends that we still see. Our children
grew up in the synagogue and are very active in their synagogues
(the same for our grandchildren).
If I became successful in business, it was because of my activities in
the synagogue. I learned how to channel my hours between
business and the synagogue.
The synagogue gives me peace of mind when I sit in my seat. I feel I
can talk to G-d. I usually do not speak to Janet or whoever is sitting
next to me. I try to listen, and as I stated before, and speak to G-d.
The older I get, I realize there is so much that I do not know or
understand, but I do know that each Shabbat when Janet and I are
going home, we discuss things that we did not know before.
Look forward to seeing you in synagogue.

The next book club meeting will be on Thursday evening, July 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of our esteemed hostess, Elane Berk.
We will be discussing the book, Saving Sophie, by Ronald H. Balson. A powerful story of the lengths a father will go through to protect his daughter and an action-packed thriller that will take you on an unforgettable journey of murder and deception, testing the bonds of family and love.
Jack Sommers was just an ordinary accountant from Chicago. That is, until his wife passed away, his young daughter was kidnapped, and he became the main suspect in an $88 million dollar embezzlement case. Now, Jack is on the run, hoping to avoid the feds long enough to rescue his daughter, Sophie from her maternal grandfather, a suspected terrorist in Palestine.
With the help of the investigative team, a secret mission is launched to not only rescue Sophie, but also to thwart a major terrorist attack in Hebron. But will being caught in the crossfires of the Palestine-Israeli conflict keep an investigative team from accomplishing the task at hand, or can they overcome the odds and save countless lives, including their own?
Please join us for an enlightening discussion. Any questions, please contact Harriet Spilkevitz at [email protected] or 516-708-9404.
BQLI Woman of Achievement Review
On Wednesday, June 8, BQLI Women’s League held its annual Woman of
Achievement Gala at Temple Israel. This year, our Sisterhood honored Carrie Yaffe
for all of her remarkable work and dedication on behalf of our congregation.
Including Carrie, her family and synagogue friends, Congregation L’Dor V’Dor
alone had 50 people in attendance honoring our well deserved Woman of
Achievement.
Carrie’s synagogue contributions include: Co-Chair of the Bikur Cholim Committee,
Co-Chair of the Torah Fund Committee, being an active member of the Membership
Committee, regular participant in weekly Shabbat Services while graciously hosting
Shabbat dinners, synagogue events, sisterhood programs and membership gatherings
in her home.
Yasher Koach to all those who made donations to the synagogue, the Torah Fund
Campaign and She Plants a Seed for the Future in Carrie’s honor.
Reflections on the Celebrate Israel Parade By Karen Popowsky
Am I glad I'm not the person who plans the Celebrate Israel Parade. I'm only the
person who chairs the Northeast Queens Jewish Community Council's contingent in
the parade. That means coordinating 11 synagogues that march together in the parade
in support of Israel. Of course, you know that Congregation L'Dor V'Dor is one of
the 11 synagogues. After months of planning, deciding our theme: “Embrace the
SPIRIT of ISRAEL”, designing our T-shirts (thank you Lisa Pollack), creating our
banner, and planning the hand props to carry in the parade: pinwheels, Israeli flags
and cascades of bubbles, the morning of the parade arrives and it is dark and rainy.
Not to be deterred by heavy rains and dark skies, we arrived in Manhattan ready to
march on 5th Avenue. It rained and rained on the groups who kicked off the parade at
11 AM, but the sun came out (divine intervention?) and lit our path along the parade
route when we stepped off to join the parade by 2:30 PM. Two hundred NEQJCC
marchers proceeded from 57th Street to 74 St. and EMBRACED THE SPIRIT OF
ISRAEL! We waved to spectators who lined the streets. What an exhilarating
feeling!
Please join us next year, on Sunday, June 4, 2017, to march in the Celebrate Israel
Parade. The sun will always shine on us as we proudly take our place in this very
special event.
Thank you to Rabbi Yaffe, Lisa Pollack, Audi Acevedo, Richie Spivack (provided
the bagel sandwiches) and to all who participated. Wishing all a wonderful summer.

Israel On Our Minds
Ambassador Danny Danon, Israel’s Permanent Representative to the UN:
Never before have so many people, from so many places, gathered here in
the General Assembly to declare unanimous support for the State of Israel.
NEW YORK - Some 1,500 pro-Israel activists, students, and
representatives of Jewish organizations among others attended the largest
gathering to date against the Boycott, Divest and Sanction movement, hosted
by the Permanent Israeli mission to the United Nations at the UN
Headquarters. The event, entitled “Building Bridges, Not Boycotts” begun
with an opening session held in the General Assembly hall of the United
Nations, a place often described as hostile to Israel. “Look around you,”
Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon told attendees. “This is a
historic moment in the UN.”
“Never before have so many people, from so many places, gathered here in
the General Assembly to declare unanimous support for the State of Israel,”
he said to the cheering audience. “One day, you will tell your children:
I was there when we stopped BDS.”
In his speech, Danon also said that BDS is “the true face of modern
anti-Semitism” and that it has “infected” the United Nations.
“You will never win,” Danon said, addressing “those who want to see an end
to the Jewish State.”
“Our people have overcome every threat and every enemy. We stand strong
we stand together and we will defeat you once and for all,” he added.
Pro-Israel and Jewish students were largely present at the event. Among
them was recent New York University Graduate Yaniv Hoffman, who came
as a representative of the organization “Realize Israel”, founded at NYU two
years ago and aiming to educate about Israel on campus. Hoffman told the
Post that although he doesn't feel the tension with BDS advocates on campus
on a daily basis. The movement's presence at NYU has caught much
attention after the Graduate Student Union passed a controversial pro -BDS
resolution last month. “I think it’s great just to bring everyone together to
talk about this issue,” he said. “It’s exciting to have all these people in one
room fighting for something important especially in this room.”
Board members of the American Jewish Committee’s New York Branch
Emily Benedek and Elissa Bernstein were also in the room on Tuesday.
“Frankly I’m amazed that the UN is allowing this conference to take place
here,” Bernstein told the Post.
“BDS represents the mindset of future world leaders and future opinion
makers and so we are very concerned about what is being taught in
academia, what is being taught in universities in Europe, in the US and what
the next generations are going to think about Israel,” she explained.

Personal Note: I attended the United Nations General
Assembly. It was a brilliant representation for our
younger generation, the Leaders of tomorrow. What a
remarkable feeling seeing hundreds and hundreds of
high school and college kids at the ”Build Bridges, Not
Boycotts” International Summit, rallying together and
speaking out against the lies, deception and modern
anti-Semitism. Together. We win.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York ordered agencies under his
control on Sunday to divest themselves of companies and
organizations aligned with a Palestinian-backed boycott movement
against Israel.
Wading into a delicate international issue, Mr. Cuomo set
executive-branch and other state entities in opposition to the
Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, or B.D.S., which
has grown in popularity in some quarters of the United States and
elsewhere, alarming Jewish leaders who fear its toll on Israel’s
international image and economy.
Mr. Cuomo made his announcement in a speech at the Harvard
Club in Manhattan to an audience including local Jewish leaders
and lawmakers, describing the B.D.S. movement as an “economic
attack” on Israel.
“We cannot allow that to happen,” the governor said, adding that,
“If you boycott against Israel, New York will boycott you.”
Alphonso David, the counsel to the governor, said that the
executive order was specifically aimed at the B.D.S. movement
launched in 2005, but that it would apply to any boycott targeting
Israel.
Several states have moved to support Israel and prevent their
governments and agencies from doing business with companies or
individuals that endorse the boycotts. Similar bills have been
introduced in both houses of the New York Legislature, and a
Republican-sponsored bill passed the State Senate, which the party
leads, in January.
But on Sunday, Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, flexed his executive
power — a more familiar demonstration in the governor’s second
term — joking that passing legislation can “often be a tedious
affair,” and saying instead he wanted “immediate action” on
B.D.S., while challenging other governors to do the same.
According to the executive order, Mr. Cuomo will command the
commissioner of the Office of General Services to devise a list over
the next six months of businesses and groups engaged in any
“boycott, divestment or sanctions activity targeting Israel, either
directly or through a parent or subsidiary.”
The list will be compiled from “credible information available to
the public,” according to the order, and subject to appeal by the
companies and entities included on it. Once the designation process
is completed, however, all executive-branch agencies and
departments — which make up a large portion of state government
— as well as public boards, authorities, commissions and all
public-benefit corporations will be required to divest themselves of
any company on the list.
Mr. Cuomo’s signed the executive order just before he marched in
the Celebrate Israel Parade in New York on Sunday, June 5.
With the largest population of Jewish residents outside Israel, New
York has outsize symbolic, and political, value in the debate over
the Middle East. For his part, Mr. Cuomo has shown increased
willingness in recent years to get involved in international issues,
including a short trip to Israel in 2014 with a state delegation.
