THE SHOFAR Page 4
For the nine High Holiday seasons I’ve enjoyed as your rabbi, I’ve shared the leadership of
this congregation with an august assembly of active and gifted members, headed for six of
them by our venerable President Linda Kost.
Through these years, I have been gratified to observe Congregation Beth Sholom’s ascent
to an extraordinary era of energetic spiritual growth – but could this be just my slightly
prejudiced opinion? How do you measure the vitality, quantify the vigor, of a
congregation?
During this time, we have experienced an unprecedented participation in every area of
congregational life by our members, both new and of long standing. Our recent holiday
services culminated in the landmark Sukkot pot-luck luncheon (“landmark” and “potluck”
might seem an oxymoron, but anyone who was not there missed an incredible array of
delectable culinary offerings by our talented member chefs and bakers). Everyone present
stepped up to shake the lulav and etrog in our beautiful sukkah.
To me, though, the one element of this year’s holidays that best highlighted the golden
age in which our congregation is basking was neither the dramatically full participation
nor even the great food, not a presence but an absence!
President Linda Kost was sidelined by bronchitis during Rosh Hashanah. For the first
time, she was not on the bima during our services. Her involvement has always been very
extensive – greeting members and guests from the moment they arrive, knowing who to
call for readings and ark openings, assisting with gabbai duties during the Torah services,
and simply filling in wherever needed.
This year, however, Linda was unable not only to participate fully, but even to attend.
And yet, we saw the readiness of our leadership, particularly our Board of Directors, to
take the reins. Vice President Burt Kraft and Treasurer Dave Englander did yeoman duty
on the bima throughout the services, and other Board members exercised important
leadership roles behind the scenes.
Though Dave joked that “it takes two men to take the place of one woman,” our leaders
really were able to bring their “A game” to the many daunting tasks Linda performs on
behalf of Congregation Beth Sholom all year long. I trust that we collectively can give her
the support and assistance she needs to continue serving in good health for many years to
come. Thanks to our entire membership for helping to make this congregational golden
age possible.
With love and blessings – Rabbi Karen Allen 386-676-5157

WOW – it’s time for me to be re-elected again. This is my sixth year as your president. When
I took over in September 2011, I never imagined that it would be a semi-permanent position!
I first joined the Board of Directors in January 2008 when I was appointed as Secretary.
Since that time I have acquired too many responsibilities!
I woud like to find someone to help with the following:
The Shofar Newsletter: Microsoft Publisher Software is used to create the newsletter.
There are six issues a year (every two months).
Maintaining the website: The website has a built in administrative interface that makes
it easy to update. The main effort is to maintain the articles on the front page that
describe our upcoming events. Once the event is over, the article is hidden (so it’s there
for next year) and replaced with another upcoming event.
Press Releases: Press releases are written for each of our services or activities. The press
releases are emailed to each of four newspapers, and also to several social groups based in
The Villages.
Sending email notices: Emails are sent to a list of members and guests who have
requested that we keep them informed. We are using an internet based software package
called Constant Contact to deliver the email. They provide several templates that can be
used. The number of emails sent in a given month varies based on what is happening, but
we generally try to send no more than one per week, and often manage to send just two in
a month.
Maintaining Birthdays, Anniversaries, and Yahrtzeit lists: These three lists are in excel
workbooks. Whenever members join, their birthdays, anniversaries, and yahrtzeits are
entered into the spreadsheets. These are then used to create the Celebrations and
Yahrtzeit sections of the Shofar.
If you might be willing to help with any of these activities, please contact me. I will be happy
to explain what’s involved, and to figure out a way for us to share the work.
Thank you!
Linda

These members have joined since the last edition of The Shofar:
Marjorie Heyman, Kitty Escue, Henry & Judy Hartstein, Toby Weber, Linda Friedman and
Jill Bulmash,, Martin & Beverly Meyers, Helene Bachmann, Returning Member: Freda
Feibel
Meet Hank and Judy Hartstein Judy (Muffs) Hartstein was born and raised in Providence, R.I. by Dr. and Mrs. Saul Muffs. She
attended The Ohio State University where she met her future husband Hank Hartstein.
Hank Hartstein was born and raised in Ohio by Rabbi and Mrs. Avram Hartstein. He also attended
The Ohio State University.
After their first child, Michelle, was born in Columbus, Ohio, Hank’s job took them to Nashville, Tn.
During their 12 years there, Judy got her RN certification and worked at St. Thomas Hospital. Their
son Daniel, was born while they lived in Nashville.
When Hank’s job took them to Orlando, Judy began work as an RN Case Manager for Cigna Insurance
Co. After 25 years in Orlando, they moved to The Villages in 2012.
Hank is semi-retired while Judy continues to work as an RN Case
Manager for Cigna. Their daughter, Michelle, lives in Hawaii with
her husband, Mark. Daniel works for the sheriff’s office in Alachua
County in Gainesville.
Hank and Judy enjoy the life of paradise in The Villages, being
involved in theatre, golf, softball, card playing and mah jongg. They
are so happy to have become affiliated with Congregation Beth
Sholom. Their photo was taken on their trip to Israel last year.
Meet Helene Bachmann
Helene was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Hunter College. She began her
career as a second grade teacher in Harlem. After deciding that she was more suited for the business
world than education, she relocated to California and worked in several different fields. Helene met
her husband Jeff in California in 1973 and they have been married 42 years. They moved to Boerne,
TX in February 2006. Helene became a member of the Hill Country Women In Business and the Hill
Country Newcomers Club, serving on both their Boards, and was a volunteer at the Rainbow Senior
Center delivering Meal on Wheels and working in their Thrift Shop.
Helene was an active member of Congregation Beth Am, a Reconstructionist Congregation, in San
Antonio. She served on their board as Vice President Administration, President and Past President.
She was a member of Hadassah in San Antonio and has transferred that membership to The Villages
Hadassah.
On the personal side, Helene’s favorite times are spent
attending live theatre performances, movies, doing water
aerobics and Tai Chi, walking, reading, playing Mah Jongg and
Mexican Train Dominoes and Samba. Helene and Jeff have
traveled world-wide and have taken many road trips around
the U.S. They relocated to The Villages in August 2016
and look forward to a long and happy life in Florida.
