Hello Barnard RAs!!!We're hoping that this newsletter finds you enjoying your summer and looking forward to returning to campus in August for some quality time with you Residential Life family!!! We are so excited to see all of your smiling faces, to hear about your amazing summer experiences, and most importantly to begin an exciting, educational, and reflective adventures that we like to call RA TRAINING!

This newsletter has loads of helpful and important information for you as you prepare to come back to Barnard and to begin or return to the most important student leader position on campus (we’re biased, clearly!) –RESIDENT ASSISTANT! A few things to highlight:

Please read this entire newsletter. We have information about our wonderful Hall Director staff, campus updates, and important dates.

All RAs are able to move back to campus MONDAY, AUGUST 12TH. You will pick up your key in the Residential Life and Housing Office in 110 Sulzberger Hall during business hours (9-5). All RAs not attending specialized training must be back on campus by 5PM ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 16TH.

Start planning now!If you are able to, begin visualizing what you want your community to look and feel like. Do you want a theme for your floor(s)? Do you have any ideas for bulletin boards or door decs? What do you want your welcome letter to your residents to include? The more you can do before you arrive, the less you will have to balance as you undergo trainig and prepare to open your residence hall.

Training often contains long mentally exhausting days. Please come back refreshed, relaxed, and ready to focus on training.

If after reading this newsletter you need more information, please do not hestitate to e-mail Courtney with general training questions or your respective AD with area-specific questions.

We can’t wait to see you in August! We look forward to having everyone together for good times, bonding, and leadership opportunities!

Warmly,Courtney & the RA Training Committee

TO: The Few. The Proud. The Barnard RA StaffFR: Annie

It's almost that time....... RAs returning to campus is aHUGE highlight of the summer for us. Even though itsignifies the end of Summer, it means that you all arehere, and that's a great boost of energy!

I just wanted to provide you with a brief update on what'sbeen happening on campus since you left - and yes, lifedoes happen when you are not here :-)

• First and foremost, our department is saying farewell to Onika Jervis. Onika has been an AD here for 13 years, so this is definitely the end of an era! Onika has a fantastic opportunity (that is right up her alley) to move to New Orleans and work with a non-profit organization that strives to involve kids in sports, specifically running. Since Onika has really worked hard to train for marathons, this is a fantastic opportunity for her, and we wish her well. I'm sure that she will have a beignet for all of us! Our department is in the process of looking at the responsibilities of this position and deciding if any changes need to be made. We will have the vacancy posted to recruit applicants within the next few weeks. We will certainly be reaching out to you to participate in the interview process for our candidates.

• Housing wise - we are in MUCH better shape then when we wrote this newsletter a year ago! All Plimpton corner rooms have been turned into doubles, and have been provided with brand new furniture!! We have enough housing for this coming year to enable us to guarantee housing to all incoming transfer students, to all re-admitted students, to all commuters who have applied for housing AND everyone on the Guaranteed Assignment List - this is REALLY good for us!

• As for FYF housing, we are able to return the x16 quads back into study lounges for this coming year - YEA!!!! This will give each floor another location to have in-hall quiet study space, and give you RAs another location for floor programs!

• As you may or may not already know, Jessica Nuñez has left Barnard to become the Dean of Students at the Master's School in Dobbs Ferry, NY. The search for her replacement is now underway. We will let you know when there is any news to report.

• In the Dean's Office - Dean Schneider has relocated back to the English Department, where he will beteaching full-time, and giving up his position as Senior Class Dean. In addition, the new Dean of Studies has been hired and has already begun, and her name is Natalie Friedman. Dean Friedman will double as the Dean of Studies AND the Senior Class Dean. All of you Senior RAs, please take time to drop in and say hello, or shoot her an email at [email protected].

• Our Director for Facilities Services, Julio Vazquez has also left Barnard. Julio is now the Director of Facility Operations at MoMA - WAY COOL!!! The former Associate Director of Barnard Facilities, Dan Davis has now been promoted to the Director position, and we all look forward to working with him.

• AD Frank will be working with our 22 students who applied to be part of the first Social Justice House here at Barnard. This group of students will be living in 616, and along with Frank;s guidance, they will offer opportunities for our campus to explore issues of social justice on campus and in the world.

• We are adding all RAs to our web site! We will put up the blurb you submitted about yourself along with a fab photo that we will take of you during training.

That's all the news at this point...... we are really lookingforward to seeing you in August!! Enjoy the remainder ofyour summer!

Annie
