ery embellishes both the exterior and interior of the theater, listed

on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information

on upcoming events visit www.egyptiantheatre.net.

Ford Idaho Center - The Ford Idaho Center is one of the most

versatile and accessible facilities of its kind in the West. Attend a

concert, convention, a sporting event, trade show, or an equestrian

show and you will be treated to a first-class experience at the Ford

Idaho Center. For more information visit www.fordidahocenter.com.

Idaho Botanical Garden - Located next to the Old Idaho

Penitentiary, the Garden is a lovely outdoor setting to visit.

The garden’s location at the base of the foothills provides a unique

outdoor concert experience for the Outlaw Field summer concert

series. Every Thursday evening from June through September,

picnickers and music lovers can enjoy Great Garden Escape

Concerts that include blues, jazz, folk, big band swing, rock,

or country performers. In winter, the garden is home to a

dazzling display of nearly 270,000 sparkling lights artfully

displayed throughout the holiday season. For more

information visit www.idahobotanicalgarden.org.

Idaho Shakespeare Festival - Enjoy musicals as well as the bard’s

works at this open air amphitheater. Pack a picnic dinner or

purchase one from Café Shakespeare and dine under the stars

to the delights of Shakespeare and contemporary mysteries,

comedies and musicals. For more information

visit www.idahoshakespeare.org.

Idaho State Capitol - Built between 1905 and 1920, the Capitol

is constructed of native sandstone quarried at nearby Table Rock.

The marble in its interior comes from Vermont, Georgia, Alaska

and Italy. This neoclassical building is patterned after the U.S.

Capitol in Washington D.C. The east and west wings were erected

from 1919-1920, at a cost of $2,290,000. Idaho is the only state

capitol building in the U.S. heated by geothermal water. John

Everett Tourtellotte, a local architect, was selected to design the

building in 1905, winning the bid in competition with 18 other

firms. Tourtellotte was required to furnish the elevations and floor

plans for the entire building and working plans and specifications

for the central portion for a fee of $10,000. The public is welcome

to sit in on a discussion of a bill while the legislature is in session

or take a self-guided tour any time of year. The Statehouse was

restored and renovated in 2010. For more information on this

treasure trove of art, furniture and historical photos visit

http://leglislature.idaho.gov/capitol.

Idaho State Historical Museum - Located in Julia Davis Park, the

museum invites you to step back into Idaho’s cultural, economic

and human history. Every last Saturday in September, volunteers

bring to life such exhibits as a blacksmith’s forge, an old west

saloon, a Chinese apothecary shop and a turn of the 20th century

kitchen. Encampments outside the museum range from the Civil

War, complete with a Lincoln impersonator, to a bivouac on

the front lines during WWII. For more information visit

http://history.idaho.gov/idaho-state-historical-museum.

Julia Davis Park - The park is home to the Boise Art Museum, a

rose garden, the Gene Harris Band Shell, and Zoo Boise, where

you can feed the giraffes from 1:30-2:30 pm. For more

information visit www.zooboise.org.

Old Idaho Penitentiary State Historic Site - Between 1870,

when the prison was built as a single-cell jail, and 1973, when

state authorities opened a new facility, more than 13,000 prisoners

did time here. The Old Pen was placed on the National Register

of Historic Places in 1974. The sandstone used to construct the

foreboding complex of buildings and high turreted stone walls

was quarried and hand-cut by the prisoners themselves. One

of its most notorious residents was Lady Bluebeard, who was

convicted of poisoning her fifth husband. Her first four

husbands also experienced unexplained and unexpected deaths.

During Halloween the prison comes to life with activities and

actors portraying inmates. Walk through 140 years of history

and hear about all the scary and true things that happened

in every hidden corner. For more information visit

http://history.idaho.gov/old-penitentiary-hours-location.

Natatorium - When it was built in 1892,

the Natatorium was the largest indoor spa

in the U.S. with dressing rooms, parlors,

billiard rooms, cafés on three levels, and

a formal dining room. Today, the Moor-

ish styled building is gone, along with the

piped-in geothermal water, but the pool

is still a fun spot to visit in summer with

its hydrotube, an enclosed water slide.

The Velma V. Morrison Center for the

Performing Arts - Located on Boise State

University’s campus, the Center is the site

of the annual Boise Music Week musical.

Past performers at the Morrison Center

include Ballet Idaho, Boise Philharmonic,

Jerry Seinfeld, George Lopez, and Brian

Regan. For more information

visit mc.boisestate.edu.

World Center for Birds of Prey - In 1984,

The Peregrine Fund consolidated its opera-

tions and established the World Center for

Birds of Prey on a scenic hilltop in Boise,

Idaho. The 580-acre campus consists of an

interpretive center, falconry archives and

breeding facilities that currently produce

chicks from captive flocks of endangered

Aplomado Falcons and California Condors.

In the past, they have produced Mauritius

Kestrels, Harpy Eagles and other rare and

endangered birds of prey for release to the

wild. It’s a great educational and fun place

to visit! For more information visit www.
