(Medical Radiology Series) Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York, 2001, hardcover, 431 pp (ISBN 3-540-66511-0) Euro 212.93 Published online: 24 October 2002 Ó Springer-Verlag 2002 R.C. Murphy Morristown, NJ, USA Type of work: This textbook is a comprehensive overview of the radiologic evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of congenital and acquired urinary tract abnormalities of infants and children. Contents: The 420-page book (with contributions from 34 authors) is divided into 26 chapters. The book includes 699 separate illustrations in 377 figures and 52 tables. The first chapter contains excellent detailed descriptions of diagnostic proce- dures including fluoroscopic, ultra- sound, nuclear medicine, and MR urographic examinations. Indica- tions for these examinations and recommended techniques are in- cluded. The next several chapters review urinary tract embryology, anatomy, and congenital anomalies. Later chapters focus on renal parenchymal diseases and acquired abnormalities of the urinary tract including renal neoplasms, trauma, and urinary tract infection. Pediatric genitourinary interventional tech- niques are discussed and illustrated in a separate chapter. Strengths: The vast spectrum of pediatric genitourinary tract abnor- malities are well-discussed and illustrated. The figures include the numerous modalities used to evaluate genitourinary diseases, including newer color Doppler, helical CT and MR imaging. The images and schematic presentations are abundant, well-labeled with clear text descriptions. The text includes pathophysiologic correlation (in- cluding pertinent laboratory values), as well as discussion of surgical and interventional treatment options and postoperative complications. The authors have done a won- derful job of demonstrating the multimodality evaluation of both complex and common pediatric genitourinary abnormalities en- countered in daily practice. Tech- niques and helpful ‘‘hints’’ for performing the various radiologic examinations are most beneficial not only for residents in training, but also for radiologists in all types of practice which include the care of infants and children. Outstanding reference. Weaknesses: None. Recommended readership: Strongly recommended reading for radiology residents and fellows. This will be a very useful reference for both pediatric and general radiolo- gists in practice. Overall rating: Outstanding.
