ContextSub-Saharan African countries are rapidly attracting attention as new markets for renewable energy technologies. Thanks to the continent’s dynamic economic and population growth, itswealth in renewable energy resources, andfalling technology costs, renewable energy investments are considered a key solution to introduce widespreadaffordable, reliableandsustainableenergyaccesstotheregion.
Thisvastmarketpotential isbasedonan importantgrowingAfricanenergydemand.Over600millionpeoplestilllive without access to energy in the region, representing significant residential and productive demand foraffordable, reliable and clean energy. Reducing energy poverty in Africa is widely recognized as fundamental toaccelerating economic transformation and sustainable development and can be achieved through the deployment oflargescaleanddecentralized(off-grid)renewableenergysolutions.
ThispotentialwasalsocapturedbytheRES4AfricaProgramlaunchinNairobionthe26thand27thofOctober2016,where multi-stakeholder interest and market development efforts were identified first-hand.
