}!INUTES OF TRUSTEES' MEETING AND ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING AT CONVENTION

OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR AESTHETICS

IN IOWA CITY, IOWA, THURSDAY, NOVlliBER 8, 1951.

The Trustees' meeting was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lester D.

Longman, 934 Highwood Drive, Iowa City, at 9:30 p.m. Present were Messrs.

Longman, Pratt, Nehm, Hungerland, and Munro. In the absence of a quorlDll,

the last two of these were appointed qy the President to act temporarily

as Trustees.

The terms of five Trustees will expire at the end of 1951; these are

Aiken, Arnheim, Gilbert, LaDriere, and Zucker. The following were nominated

to take their places; Walter Abell, Bertram Jessup, Ernest Hassold, and

Douglas N. Morgan. These four nominations were to be presented to the

membership for written vote this fall.

The question of a meeting place for 1952 was discussed. Messrs. Pratt

and Nehm were asked to consider the matter and to submit their recommendations

qy letter to the Board of Trustees.

It was proposed and agreed that a program committee be set up,to comprise

four members including the President, a representative of the institution

where the meeting was to be held, and two other members to be appointed qy

the President.

The annual business meeting was held on Saturday, November lOth, at

9 a.m. in the auditorium of the art building at the State University of Iowa.

In the absence of Ransom Patrick, who was prevented from attending qy illness,

Mr. Munro read the annual report of the Secretary-Treasurer of the Society

and Business Manager of the Journal. It was moved, seconded, and passed

-2-

~~at the report be accepted and the Society's thanks extended to Mr.

Patrick for his work in management.

On the motion of Bertram Morris, a Trustee (who had been absent from

the Trustees' meeting), the name of D. W. Gotshalk was added to the list of

nominees for the Board of Trustees to fill the fifth vacancy which would

occur at the end of 1951.

Mr. Munro explained the financial difficulties confronting our own and

other societies and publications in the field of humanities at the present

time. He urged an attempt on the part of all members to secure additional

sponsoring institutions and, if possible, foundation grants. Mr. Munro

pointed out that the Cleveland Museum of Art was making a substantial

contribution to the Society and Journal. Whereas in previous years it

had been necessary to spend up to nine hundred dollars for secretarial

help, the Museum was now supplying, without cost to the Journal or to the

Society practically the full time of one secretary and part-time of two

others·. The Museum was also supplying an annual donation of one hundred

dollars, which might be changed from time to time. Continuance of this help

was not assured for the future, and a backlog from other sources was much

to be desired.

The meeting was adjourned.
