PRIMARY SCHOOL

RECEPTION AAsalamu Alaykum

Welcome back to Term 4 after a restful break! It is heart warming to see how excited the students are to be back into learning mode. There is so much to do this term so please do support your child in reading every day for 10-15 minutes. This practise results in a tremendous improvement in their reading levels. In Literacy, our classes are learning how to write letters to a friend using the correct structure and format of a personal letter. Students came up with some very creative letters. We will be creating our very own letterbox in class so students can understand the process of posting letters.

In Maths we are continuing to learn how to count in two’s , fives and tens. Students had tons of fun getting the grasp of ordinal numbers and positioning by playing competitive team games! Parents please ensure that lunch boxes have healthy snacks with sufficient lunch and water bottles are to be carried everyday as it is warming up very quickly.

Mrs Zulekha Naby

YEAR 1AHere we are in the last term of this year. This term has had a busy start with the Spelling Bee competion, PAT assessments, ongoing assessments and the end of year activities. In class this term we had many exciting hands on learning experiences across different subject areas.

Our main focus this term is our author Nick Bland the stories drive us to write some descriptive writing about the characters of the stories, We have also included some Poetry, and strategic thinking to write letters to our friends and family. Our daily five guided reading practice has had a wonderful outcome in the overall results. In Numeracy students have learned Ordinal numbers, Subtraction on number line, measure the Volume and Estimation. It looks like the children have done a great job of learning enthusistically in all learning areas.

In Technology students have shown great interest in leraning about the seven wonders of the world and the historical monuments. We can see their commitment to creativity in their work samples.

Just a few weeks left for this memoralble year to end so lets learn and enjoy. So keep working hard and don’t forget to practice reading on daily basisMrs Nusrat Mandsorwala

YEAR 2AIt’s hard to believe that we are in term four, which means that we are heading towards the end of our academic year. Time has certainly gone by very fast! Students in our year 2 class have continued their learning journey with great enthusiasm. Over the past 3 terms they have made remarkable achievements. In English, they are learning how to write a persuasive text, increasing their vocabulary in the process. In Maths they continued to increase their number skills through advanced subtraction, fractions, and four digit number place value. In science they are learning the water cycle. They have done many exciting experiments to discover how water is recycled through the atmosphere.

In HASS, they are learning how Indigenous Australian people are connected to their land through the Dreamtime stories, particularly of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains. They are also working on their project based learning, which is focused on climate change. They are doing research on the causes of climate change and how to prevent it, which they are preparing to soon present. Thank you to all the staff, students and parents for ensuring the past three terms have run smoothly, and here’s to hoping we have fun and learn lots in our final term!Mrs Sahra Mohamed

YEAR 3Year 3 has had a wonderfully busy start to the term, diving straight into work from day 1. We have some exciting projects planned for later in the term - stay tuned for more updates!

This term, students are learning about poetry. We have some budding poets in the class and we will be using our skills to create different types of poems, such as limericks, cinquains and acrostic poems.

For Science, we are learning all about Outer Space! We are focusing particularly on the relationship and movement between the sun, moon and Earth. Students absolutely loved the hands-on experience of using a globe to see the rotation of the Earth and how we have night and day. They have also created different paper models that resemble the movement of the Earth around the sun and the moon around Earth.

In HASS, students are learning more about the beautiful country we live in, Australia. As we progress through each lesson, students are adding details to their very own map of

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge”

Page 5: QUOTE OF THE WEEK FROM THE PRINCIPAL · be bestowed on our Beloved Prophet Mohamed (swa) his family and companions. As our academic year draws to a close we have much to celebrate

Australia and inshaAllah they will each have a bright, colourful and detailed map by the end of term.

Raisan’s bean plant:“I grew a bean plant in class in Term 1 and since then I’ve been taking good care of my plant. I was interested in growing my plant so I encouraged my mum to help me grow the plant. I was surprised that it grows so fast and while my plant was growing it eventually grew beans. When I saw the beans I couldn’t wait to take pictures and show them to my class. I picked the beans and gave them to my mum to cook so I could share them with my family.”Mrs Radia Amin

YEAR 4AThe final term is in full swing and students are working hard to finish out the year strong. This term is packed full of excitement as our class is looking forward to a well-deserved break after working so hard, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

In numeracy, we are continuing to push through the content focusing currently on extended multiplication and division strategies. Prodigy program will continue to supplement the students’ individual needs and tasks will regularly be added during the week for extra-practise at home. Please allow your children the time to take advantage of this opportunity when available.

In literacy, we are reviewing the various structures and features of factual recounts. Students are also examining newspaper articles and different text types to learn about points of view and providing evidence for or against a topic. As always please ensure students are reading a variety of different text for at least 20 minutes a night to help develop their vocabulary and reading comprehension. Regular trips to the public library on the weekends are highly encouraged. Reading with your child and listening to them read is always a worthwhile activity to show your child how important reading for enjoyment is!

In Science, the focus this term will be on Physical Sciences: Forces and Motion. Students’ will be learning about how forces act upon objects by participating in several hands-on investigations to predict outcomes and test and evaluate their results.

Finally, in Physical Education this term as the weather heats up, students are learning the rules and regulations for playing tennis. Check out our exciting photos of students learning in action! Our outside sports court is a perfect place to develop these skills and hopefully in the future the next tennis pro can come from IQRA College!Mr Stephen Hafner

YEAR 5AFor this term, the Year 5s are going to learn about exposition, learning how to present their arguments and counter arguments about a topic. They will also learn to polish their presentation skills as they prepare for the debate. I am hoping to uncover some hidden talents from these activities.

For Science, they are going to learn about the solar system, the different planets and their characteristics. At the same time, they are also going to learn to appreciate the creation of Allah s.w.t., how perfect is HIS creation in making sure that the planets stay their course and not collide with one another.

For HASS, they are going to learn about the contributions of the early migrants to Australia, in particular, the Afghan cameleers. They will learn about how new migrants establish themselves in the community. Mr Zamri Mohd

YEAR 6What a start it has been to the term so far…. already four weeks in, Mashallah! Students haven’t wasted anytime time picking up where they left off. They are busy thinking, interacting, creating and engaging during class.

For English, students are analyzing the features of a newspaper report and are required to write an article in our very own, IQRA Newspaper! Wild rabbits attacking the school, false fire alarm callouts, fundraising to build wells and teachers having contagious smiles are just a few of the very interesting topics students have chosen to report on. But being a reporter is not the only role students have to play this term, for Maths, they are assuming the role of architects, planning out house designs

for ‘clients,’ that have chosen to adopt their services. This relates to the curriculum in that students are required to calculate area, perimeter and use operation skills in order to ensure measurements are accurate and according to scale.

For Project Based Learning students are discovering more about bridges and are required to individually construct a bridge out of minimal resources: popsicles and glue. The bridge must be able to hold a capacity of at least 3kg. The bridge project is intended to have a cross-curriculum focus - for students to be able to see how something as mundane as a bridge relates to Science, Math, H.A.S.S, English, Art, Technology and I.C.T.

The inquire based project empowers students to ask questions such as: Why were bridges built throughout history? How can I write an information report on the construction of a mini bridge? What type of areas do bridges need to be built on in order to survive? Is there any mention of bridges in the Qur’an & Sunnah? All in all, I am very proud of the students and their achievements thus far and I am sure they are looking forward to finishing off the rest of the term on a strong note, Inshallah! Mr Dawood Perrotta

PRIMARY SCHOOL RELIGIONThis term is going fast and students were happily exploring the concept of leadership in Islam in Islamic Studies lesson. The concept is tiered according to their class level with the lower primary learning about ways they can care for themselves and other creations of Allah (SWT) like the plants and animals, and the upper primary learning about how they can better themselves so they can help inform others about Islam appropriately at their age-level. The students learnt that sharing the beauty of the religion is not necessarily through talking to others but also being an example

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge”

Page 8: QUOTE OF THE WEEK FROM THE PRINCIPAL · be bestowed on our Beloved Prophet Mohamed (swa) his family and companions. As our academic year draws to a close we have much to celebrate

through their own actions first.

Year 3 students in action! Year 3 students are engaged in building the strongest holder that can carry the weight of a metal buzzer. The main objectives of the activity is to work in a respectful and cooperative manner. The strength in their task creation is also to signify that when they remain united as Muslims, they will be a stronger community InshaAllah. Year 2 students are learning about being a good Muslim role model. The children learnt that a true hero is someone who makes them think of doing good things - someone who pleases Allah and encourages them to do the same. We read short stories of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), Abu Bakr (RA), Hakem Olajuwon (a sportsman) and a few more. Here are some real heroes in our children’s life. Well done Dads!Sr Jannah Kuning

HIGH SCHOOLAs part of the Australian Curriculum standard, students were asked to create an Indigenous piece of artwork showcasing what ‘the land’ and ‘ocean’ means to them. As well as learning about one of the most intricate techniques of art – dot painting. The year 10’s showed a lot of thought, effort and developed new skills and techniques from this piece. Giving them a new perception of art. It was wonderful to see how some students showed great progress and began feeling more confident of their own abilities. It has allowed the students to begin thinking outside the box, try new techniques and build up their resilience. Great work year 10’s!

The year 9’s have been working to create a new style of art that they are not familiar with. Their project requires them researching

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge”

a deceased artist, learning about who they are, what they created as well as their style of work. The students then get to mimic their chosen artist’s work, and re-create it to make it their own. The students have shown great diversity and progress in their work which has been wonderful to see. They have also been creating more hands on work such as using clay and embroidery/cross stitch.

This art work below is Rahadian Wildan’s work. Where he has been using clay to create a solider.

Alaaaldeen Alzoubi has begun his first landscape painting which he is new to and is following his planning very well. Alaaaldeen has come far with his techniques and skills in Art.

Year 8 Art The students in the year 8 class have been working on perspective point artworks. Their goal is create an illusion of three-dimensional (depth and space) on a two-dimensional (flat) surface. This allows them to focus on making a drawing seem to have a form, distance and look “real.” The students have been able to apply their previous sketch drawing and shading techniques as well as their shape dimensions to assist

them in this task.

Year 7 Art The students in year 7 have been re-visiting drama. Using their previous practices and skills to create a new and improved play that assists them in creating their own story. The students have been engaged and working hard to push themselves and create a play that is different and more complex. This time around, the students have also been working on props that can assist their storyline, such as wigs, costumes and other props such as sunglasses and masks.

In English the students have been working on their procedural texts, where they have to make or do something, record it and follow the structure of a procedure. The students had to make the task creative, different and exciting. That way it was

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge”

Page 10: QUOTE OF THE WEEK FROM THE PRINCIPAL · be bestowed on our Beloved Prophet Mohamed (swa) his family and companions. As our academic year draws to a close we have much to celebrate

engaging for them and the rest of the classroom. To end the assignment the students are to present it to the class in an oral presentation. The students have been working extremely hard to create something different and something that relates to their own interests. For example, Muhammad Keswanee and Rayan Alanazi have created a poster and PowerPoint, providing visual images of their procedural text alongside their text.

The year 8’s have recently finished poetry writing and are moving into information reports. The poetry that they completed was excellent and well thought out. What the students really enjoyed about the tasks we did was that they could have fun with it by making it serious, humorous, scary or in a story like manner. The students were able to explore what poetry is, as well as what it could include. Such as rhyming, metaphors, similes, rhythm, repetition and tone and pace. Following on with this, the students had to read their poetry out as “Slam Poetry,” which they also really enjoyed. Slam poetry is all through confidence and the way the words are said/ delivered to the audience. Mrs Zahra Fathi

Health and PE (High School Boys) The High School boys have commenced the

unit of work on the Skeletal and Muscular Systems. - Learning that there is a big concentration of bones in our hands and feet, was something new for the students. - The boys were also surprised to learn that the Rib Cage and the Sternum provide protection for vital organs like the lungs.

We looked at snippets from the 1989 VFL/AFL Grand Final where two Hawthorn Footballers sustained broken ribs which ended up causing punctured lungs and a split kidney respectively. This has tied directly into the history of AFL, our practical work this term and it links in with the work that we have done on having a Growth Mindset.

Football Codes Year 7-10 boys are currently undertaking practical learning and assessment in various codes of Football. This includes AFL, Soccer, Gaelic Football and American Football (NFL/Gridiron).The boys have started with the skills of AFL (handballing, kicking, marking and bouncing the footy) and the pictures shown demonstrate effective handballs in a game of Handball Football.

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge”

Page 11: QUOTE OF THE WEEK FROM THE PRINCIPAL · be bestowed on our Beloved Prophet Mohamed (swa) his family and companions. As our academic year draws to a close we have much to celebrate

Year 7 MathsThe Year 7 class has made incredible progress with their Geometric Reasoning this term. They have also made useful connections with angles in other curriculum areas such as Physical Education and Science.“Thinking about our thinking” is a big part of schooling these days and it was a wonderful to see Muhammad K demonstrate a very clever and an original way, to remember Supplementary and Complementary angles (please see the link to the video).https://bit.ly/iqramathsangles

HIGH SCHOOL DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIESThe newly found appreciation for web page development and CSS (Term 3) has enabled our Year 7/8 students to see how it all comes together in a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress. The students have created their own Blogs using EduBlogs (powered by WordPress) to add meaningful posts about things they are interested in. It is also doubling as a platform to submit their assignments about the following aspects of computing:

- Cloud vs Local Storage- Networks- Binary Code- Hardware

Each student has applied a skin/theme to

his/her blog to help personalise it to his/her taste. Below are some links to the blogs that have been created by the students:

http://rogayaha.edublogs.org/http://maryamka.edublogs.org/http://sidran.edublogs.org/

Rahadian W has been doing some work on building his own computer at home and recently built his own headphones as well. Well done Wildan!

Year 7 Science We have kicked off the term looking at the Earth’s Resources. In particular, the renewable and non-renewable resources. Sustainability is the key focus for this unit of work and the students are learning about Biomass, Geothermal Energy as well as Solar and Tidal as renewable energy sources.Mr Aaron Caesarikow

IQRA College.

The high school are continuing to work hard and are now settling into the routine back at IQRA College, they are all aware of assessments, due dates and tests that are coming up for this term. By now, all of the high school are fully aware of the study expectations of them and how much work we do here at IQRA College. This will help them all with their time management skills and get them used to the hard work that is expected at higher education and in life after school.

Year 8 Science: TERM 4 Students are starting their final topic of Chemistry, students are looking at atomic structure and getting them used to the dynamic periodic table, they are using experiments, practicals and digital technology to help them with the learning process. This terms assessment are based on the following:

Two in class written tests2 written assignments/projects2 formal practical reportsbook work and attitude in classThese four areas are what their report grade is based on and will be assessed along side the ACARA criteria in year 8 science.Students this term started by looking at the types of reactions with elephant toothpaste.

TERM 3: Students looked at the topic of earth space science, including how minerals are exposed and used once they are out of the ground. They did a practical about mining using fruit cakes. Students set up their own mining company and negotiated with getting materials and trading with other groups to get the highest profit (see image)

Year 9 Science and HASS: TERM 4: Students in Science are starting their unit

on chemistry, They are starting to look at the impact of chemical reactions and how elements are organised in the periodic table and how ionic compounds are formed. The assessment includes using practicals, experiments and assessments to test the students retention of knowledge. This is done by the following

Two in class testsTwo practical reportsTwo assignmentsBook work and class attitude

HASS: Students are summarizing changes that have occurred to make a 21st century world and how society has changed over this time. They are doing this by looking at their own ancestral story in their families and then looking at focus areas on the question “How did Australia become a modernized Nation by looking at various historical events. The assessment for reporting is as follows

One Essay Test (in class)2 Assesment tasksSource analysis taskBookwork and class attitude.

I am personally looking forward to the looking at the ancestry of each of the students and look at their own family history

TERM 3: Students in the Science for term 3 looked at how to developed earthquake

proof structures, for this they had to study how an earthquake effects a building and how to manage building and resources on a budget.

Year 10 Science and HASS:

Students this term in Science are looking at Chemistry, and getting them prepared for the potential to choose Stage 1 Chemistry in 2020. This includes being introduce to the Science as a Human Endeavor and the rigors of testing for the senior high school. The assessmenst breakdown looks like this

two written tests2 Practicals (one of these is a combined SCIENCE HASS PBL one)2 AssignmentsBook work and class effortIn HASS, students are looking at sustainability in the modern world, starting in their own backyard, students have started looking at the rubbish that is disposed of at IQRA and performing a bin AUDIT to see what we can do, this will eventually cultivate into a proposal for a new waste management system to be implemented by the students and the school. This will form one of the basis of their assessment, this is what that will look like for reporting:

Two written test1 Practical (in combination with Science PBL)2 Written assessments.

Stage 1 Society and Culture:Our combine year 10/11 Society and Culture class is working through the four assessments required for SACE marking and grading. This topic, if the students are successful will allow them to access 0 SACE credits, which will help them achieve the SACE and obtain an ATAR level. The assessment this term include the final group assessment and the last individual assessments, looking at the question “are we born the way we are” and the b=debate of “Nature vs Nurture.”

Stage 1 Biology: This term, we are continuing from term 3, the students are really well placed with Biology, as by then end of week 3, they would have completed 3 out of the 4 SACE Assessments, only leaving the Summative SACE test in week 5, The following weeks I plan to set them a formative class EXAM and to test them and get them ready for Stage 2 Biology, which includes an External exam that is worth 30% of their final grade in 2020. Last term, students discovered that there is very little traces of bacterial spread at IQRA College by performing a practical experiment to test this (see images)Mr Andrew Reavley

SACE NewsAll Year 9, 10 and 11 students have been assigned SACE numbers now. Year 10 students will have acquired quite a few SACE points by the end of the year. Besides the PLP (Personal Learning Plan), they have completed an array of subjects, such as Religion Studies, Arabic and Society and Culture. Year 11 students have also been busy over the year completing their chosen subjects, plus the Stage 2 Research Project. Term 4 is a particularly busy time in schools as exams will be undertaken and students present their final tasks to teachers. Year 10 and 11s need to plan their time carefully so that all tasks are completed and drafted by their teachers and ample time is available for studying for tests and exams.- Helen Bhatia & Andrew Reavley

Year 10 PLP (Personal Learning Plan)Students have nearly finalised the course for the year. They completed five tasks in total, plus visited two universities: Flinders and UniSA. - The first task was devoted to the Seven SACE Capabilities. Students learnt about the importance of these capabilities to the PLP and other SACE subjects that they will undertake this year and over the next two years.- The second task was devoted to the Personal and Social Capability whereby

students had to consider their futures and what subjects they wanted to complete both in the short and long term.- The third task was about the capability called Critical and Creative Thinking. Students focused on learning a new skill relevant to their goals and future pathways.- The fourth task was to complete a resume and cover letter and the final task was to review their learning and the work they completed over the year. Some interesting work has been presented this year, as students have worked with great diligence to ensure they read and understood the SACE Performance Standards which is the marking criteria used in Stage 1 and 2 subjects in South Australia.Impressive work has been presented as students have used the draft method to improve the quality of their work. This has

PARENT ACCESS TO EDMODOEdmodo is an excellent online classroom software that IQRA College is currently using across its high school classes. Students are able to use Edmodo to access all class content such as presentations, worksheets and links provided by the

teacher. In addition parents can also access the classrooms to ensure they are up to date with their child’s academic progress.

Please follow the steps below to ensure you have access to Edmodo using your Parent Account:

1. Obtain the unique parent code for your child’s account. Please note that this is not the same as your child’s class/group code(s). Your child has been provided with the parent code.

2. Go to the Edmodo homepage on a web browser (you can also sign up with the Edmodo for Parents Android App and iOS Apps).

3. Click Parent > fill in the necessary information

4. Click Sign up for FREE.

5. Fill in your first and last name > click Continue.

6. Enter your parent code in the pop up box > click Connect. (If you miss this pop up box, you can always connect to your child’s account in the left panel > click Add a child or class)

You only need one parent account your entire time on Edmodo. Even if you have multiple children using Edmodo, you can add them all to your one account. There is never a need to create a new parent account

(and there is never a need for your child to create a new student account either). If your child did create a new account, simply obtain the parent code associated with your child’s new account and add it to your existing Parent Account. As your child joins or leaves classes or schools, your account will automatically update to reflect these changes.

Note: Each child has a different parent code. You do not have to share a parent account with another parent, relative, or guardian. Multiple parent accounts can be set up for one student.
