Wildflower Quilt Guild Newsletter

A Note From the WQG Pres ident

Greetings from sunny Cancun, Mexico! Did that get your

attention?

Thought we needed a bit of cheery news, since the past

several weeks have been cold, dreary and wet, to some

extent. Not enough rain thus far, and we keep praying we

will get some of that much needed wet stuff. My bulbs

have awakened in my garden, but I am fearful the wild-

flowers this year will not make much of a showing due to

the lack of rain. Well, we shall have to enjoy what we

have.

Have you been thinking about that quilt you will be enter-

ing the quilt show next year? Now is the time to get

those gears a-moving, and those creative juices flowing.

We might well have some top winners in our guild. It is

exciting to think about entering a piece in the show. Sta-

cy and I are excited already, and have already had mem-

bers volunteering to help, which is always a good sign.

It was so good to see everyone last Tuesday, and we

missed those of you not able to make it. It was a long

time between the December Christmas party and the

March WQG Program & workshop

February guild meeting. I am looking forward to the pro-

gram on buttons next month, and encourage you to join in

our monthly meeting.

One last thing. Kathryn Hermans, the first president of our

guild, has been busy getting the Temple Children’s Muse-

um up and running. The museum is hosting the Texas

Wildlife Exhibit at the Bell County Museum in May. One

of the enrichment stations will teach students about ani-

mal camouflage in the wild. They will have the opportuni-

ty to select animal figurines and create a camouflage dio-

rama using scraps of fabric modeling the sky, water, and

various terrain. She asked if any members of our guild

might consider donating any fabric for the exhibit. She

will be coming to the March meeting, and if you have any

fabric she could use, and it can be any color, please bring

it.

In closing, did you know I have a PHD in quilting? Yep,

projects half done. Hope to get some of them completed

this year. Happy stitching,

Mary Ann

I hope you enjoyed Connie Duffey's Machine Quilt-

ing program as much as I did!. There were

10 of us that took her workshop! The work-

shop gave me the confidence to know I

can quilt on my home machine! It will take

lots of practice and I won't be as good as

she is, but I will be able to quilt more of my

own quilts!

March 20 program is by Janice Canard.

Janice is a member of the Central Texas

Button Club and her program is "Buttons,

Miniature Works of Art". She is bringing buttons, visuals

and will also have some buttons for pur-

chase.

March 21 workshop will be "Sew Day"! I

will have some sample blocks using but-

tons for embellishment. You can work on

your own project, or bring fabric scraps or

fat quarters and also some buttons if you

want to make some decorative blocks for

yourself. I will have a some patterns you

can use. $5 fee for workshop.

Come learn how you can create very accurate half-square

triangles in record time using the HSTSystem method. This

very fun and easy method is faster than the Bias Strip meth-

od, the popular 8-At-A-Time method, and there’s no paper

tearing!

We might change the way you make quilts forever.

Join us to see for yourself!

Beginner’s Luck Workshop

March 20 - 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

This workshop is jam packed with some very unique meth-

ods for making perfect rapid-fire quilt tops and more.

First you will have a hands-on experience learning how to

take full advantage of the HSTSystem stencils. We promise

this is not just another half-square triangle

tool. You will enjoy immediate success

while having fun!

Then you’ll dive into making an easy quilt

pattern designed especially for this work-

shop, Beginner’s Luck. This pattern is full of

half-square triangles. We think it’s a great

workshop project.

Killeen Quilt Guild

Because we had two months of charm squares in

February, some members brought just January

squares, some members brought just February

squares, and others brought both sets, there

was a mix up with getting the fair amount of squares

to everyone. Apologies for that. I have a few charm

square packs that were not

picked up after the meeting

and some extra charm

squares that you may have

to compensate for the con-

fusion.

Please see me at the March

meeting and we will get this

straightened out.

Please continue to participate

in charm squares. And please use a gallon zip lock

bag clearly marked with your name for this activity.

2018 Challenges

2018 – THE YEAR OF CHALLENGES

The first 3 challenges of the year began in January.

• The Annual Guild Challenge will require that you buy

a fat quarter from the Challenge Coordinators for $3.

The quilt must be made with black, white, black &

white or white & black fabrics and the one colored fat

quarter. It can be no smaller on any side than 25”

and no longer on any side than 48.” Voting will be

held in November. Further rules will be available.

• The Donation Challenge will require that you use a

free kit available at the Community Services table and

follow the other requirements listed in the kit.

• The first ever Art Quilt Challenge will feature the

theme, “I love……” This challenge was inspired by

the program we had in 2017 presented by Rita Schor-

man from Waco. These will be small quilts (exactly

11” x 14”) and should represent something or some-

one that you love.

Members are encouraged to try their skills on at least one

challenge this year but you are more than welcome to do

them all. Please remember that you must have a book

from the guild library and you must follow the rules for

each challenge that pertains to the book.

The February meeting introduced us to Connie Duffey.

Connie presented a program on “Quilt Wrestling”, a very

informative presentation on machine quilting and a trunk

show. The following day, Connie held a workshop at

Grace Presbyterian Church.

DO YOU HAVE BACK PROBLEMS?

Your back needs rest and variety of movement. If you plan to quilt all day, you must vary your activities.

1. Stand to iron and then sit to sew.

2. Stand to rotary cut.

3. Move to a recliner to do handwork.

4. Motrin and Advil will make the situation worse. Tylenol is better but can lead to other problems.

5. Take a 10-minute break every hour to stretch.

Three Quilting Tips

“WE CARE” BEE

The We Care Bee (for making dona-

tion items) will meet on Wednesday,

March 7 at 9 a.m. at Grace Presbyteri-

an Church. There will be kits and bat-

ting available. Members or friends

who knit and crochet are always wel-

come to join the quilters.

PRECUTS

Many precut shapes have PINKED EDGES to pre-

vent fraying. Use the outermost edge of the pink-

ing to gauge seam allowances.

Other News

PROJECT LINUS

The total number of quilts and blankets distributed by the

Bell County Chapter of Project Linus recently reached

30,000. These quilts and blankets go to children in need

in Bell, Coryell, and McLennan counties, Ft. Hood, and

other areas such as Hurricane Harvey relief.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

The new year brings a new membership drive. All mem-

bers must renew their membership for $30, just print a

membership form off of our website or pick up a form from

Sandy Meeker at the sign in table at the guild meetings.

Please try your best to renew of join by March so that your

information will make it into our WQG Yearbook.

2018 GUILD YEARBOOK

We will have a guild yearbook again this year. Individual

member information will be taken from the membership

sheets to include in the yearbook. If you want to be listed

as a quilter for hire or for free, if you are in charge of pro-

grams, the calendar, refreshments, or if you have any oth-

er information that we need to share with all members,

please be sure to get the information to Cindy Moore.

APPLIQUÉ PATTERNS

Look for appliqué pattern ideas in scroll saw pattern

books. You will find both plain

and fancy designs with clean, un-

complicated

outlines.

SAVE YOUR SCRAPS!

Nothing is too small to be useful! Use tiny scraps and

selvages to stuff toys or pillows.

Cut 24 – 6” squares of 100%

cotton fabric (selvages re-

moved). Stack Charm Squares

by offsetting each layer by ¼

turn – (this makes it easier for us

to distribute the squares). Put

the Charm Squares in a Ziploc

bag with your name it, drop the

bag off at the Charm Square ta-

ble before the start of the guild

meeting and remember to pick your bag up at the end of

the guild meeting. You will have a wonderful variety of 6”

fabric squares to work with.
