The theme of this issue could be "engagement." Dean Morgan welcomed the students

2015 Financial Literacy Workshop

Profs. Hargadon and Lordi Christopher DeYoung

On Friday, November 6, 2015 Dean Morgan welcomed

over 90 area high school students to our annual Financial

Literacy workshop. Responsible financial planning is a

key element to a happy and successful future. This work-

shop for high school students is designed to help students

avoid the pitfalls that have made people 25 years and

younger the fastest growing group of bankruptcy filers.

Students learn the following skills:

Manage your money.

Make your money work for you.

Remain debt free.

This year in addition to the faculty presentation by Profes-

sors Lordi and Hargadon, Christopher DeYoung ’98

spoke to the students about setting goals, working on net-

working and always trying to gain more knowledge. Chris

spoke about playing football in college and also learning

more about investing and how to be successful. He joked

that he was not the most studious student but has since

learned to be focused and positive. Professors Lordi and

Hargadon highlighted key financial literacy tools as well

as the importance of knowing the difference between a

“want and a need.” Enjoying the beautiful fall day, the

high schoolers were able to tour the campus and then en-

joyed playing Financial Football in break out rooms. The

cafe, the food, the ice cream are always big hit!

UPS Safety Training

Tony Heath - Community Relations Manger

What is so great about safe driving? It helps save lives! On Novem-ber 10, Tony Heath presented the safe driving program to fifty un-dergraduate students. Tony is a certified trainer and has spent 27 years with UPS. He knows about accidents as well as safe driving. He gave an engaging, interactive, well received talk about the bene-fits of following certain rules.

How do UPSers get to be so safe? A whole lot of training. In 2014, they invested well over four million hours into more than 200 safety-training courses for employees. Many of these industry-leading courses are taught by certified management trainers.

For example, UPS tractor-trailer drivers receive 80 hours of com-puter-based and on-road training before operating equipment. UPS pilots receive robust training upon hire, as well as recurrent training every year. And their package car drivers receive hours of class-room and on-road training to ensure they master UPS’s safe driving methods in theory and in practice.

With the aid of a $1.8 million grant from the Department of Labor, and in collaboration with MIT, Virginia Tech and the Institute for the Future, UPS built a high-tech, next-generation training facility called UPS Integrad™. In 2014, they opened two more Integrad™ facilities in Phoenix, Arizona and Portland, Oregon. The facilities record trainees participating in 3-D simulations and webcasts so they’re able to see their own driving skills in action. The simulator takes trainees through a replica outdoor city with real streets, signs, sidewalks and commercial and residential delivery and pickup sites. Results show a sharp increase in driver proficiency, including a reduction in first-year injuries and auto accidents.

(BLS) gave a one hour presentation to business stu-

dents on Monday, November 2, 2015. Kara Markley

and Erin Delaney gave a presentation entitled

"There's a Stat for That!" in front over 100 students in

an entertaining and interactive hour. The event was

sponsored by the Economics department of the

School of Business, and it focused on how students

could use BLS statistics to find information that

would relate to their jobs and lives.

Finance Advisory Board Meeting

On October 30, 2015, the faculty in finance welcomed their 2015 Board. The purpose of the board is to

provide feedback to the professors in regard to curriculum and relate opportunities for jobs and intern-

ships.

We value our close relationship with our industry partners and know they are a guiding force for our

school. The big news this year is the plan for a state-of-the-art Trading Room in the Quick Center. Plans

are being made now to convert room 109 to a fully operational training room for fall 2016. This will ena-

ble our students to fully develop skills needed in the corporate world. We are excited to move forward

with this project and the board was very supportive!

PSE Students and Prof. Shoemaker

On November 5, 2015 Dr. Mary Shoemaker hosted over 100 students at Lathem Hall for her Pi Sigma Epsilon Networking Event. This annual event yields job opportu-nities for our students. Twenty five companies attended and participated in the “speed dating” format. Michelle Hanly served as the Master of Ceremonies and did an excellent job of rotating the students to various tables with the executives. Dr. Shoemaker is the faculty liaison with the Pi Sigma Epsilon Marketing fraternity and has helped ready her students for the working world by al-ways having industry experts in her classes and sharing her networking secrets! Dean Morgan commented, “These students are ready to network and find jobs.”

Dr. Shoemaker has helped so many Widener students prepare for the job search and then find contacts that

hire them! It’s always nice to see alums come back to network and explain why they are so tired!

Escaping the Room in Philadelphia

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………...........................................................

Dr. Donna McCloskey invited her honor stu-dents to attend “Escape the Room” in Philly. The group was enthusiastic, confident, and sure of their ability to solve the mystery. They had fun and lots of laughs but still needed more time to complete the puzzle. Maybe next year?

Escape the Room is a fun, interactive game tak-ing place in Philly. While it looks like any oth-er ordinary room, it’s actually a mystery puz-zle. Find the hidden objects, figure out the clues and solve the puzzles to earn your free-dom and “Escape the Room.” You have 60 minutes, so be quick! Come with your friends, family and coworkers and have a great time.

Use your wits and with each other find the clues, solve the puzzles and get the key to your freedom. Easy right? Remember– everything is part of the game.

Students were trying to escape from the room.

Ryan Raiker Mark Cuban

Tom Toner Patrick F. Scanlon

Patrick F. Scanlon graduated from Widener University with his MBA in 2010 and has been

on an upward trajectory ever since. He spent over five years as the Director of Corporate Fi-

nance with Preferred Proppants, LLC and prior to that served as the Director of Treasury.

Patrick enjoys working at the largest refinery on the East coast. His challenging position has

enabled him to bring the refinery back to life after it was sold by Sunoco. They employ 1300

hundred people now versus 1100 when Sunoco owned it. While the price of crude oil has

gone down, Pat still finds it exciting to trade oil in the commodities market. Patrick and his

wife enjoy living in Center City and have been coming to the Dean’s Holiday Reception for

several years. They enjoy connecting with friends and talking with the faculty.

Philadelphia Energy Solutions is the longest continuously operating refinery on the East

Coast, processing approximately. 330,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The Philadelphia En-

ergy Solutions Refining Complex operates two domestic refineries – Girard Point and Point

Breeze – in South Philadelphia.

Ryan Raiker is a student on the move. He is active in everything here on campus and is always willing to lend a hand to help out or get to know people. He serves as an Ambassador at the SBA, is involved in Student Government and has many other volunteer jobs. He also works part time at City Hall, but he finds the time to network and meet people. Ryan went to the University of PA to hear Mark Cuban speak about his book, which is part of their Authors at Wharton Series. Ryan heard the presentation but also made contact with Mark and got to hang out with him and visit. He spoke about how humble Mark is and how concerned he is about raising his children in a way that does not inhibit their work ethic. Mark and Ryan share the same work ethic.
