Question 1

I am providing an brief analysis of my trailer. I will analyse some of the codes and conventions of my trailer to existing trailer, as that will answer question 1. My aim is to show that I have used existing trailers and have noted the codes and conventions of a trailer while producing my trailer.

(The Protagonist is a female. Originally we wanted decided on a child to be our main character. However as w e produced the trailer we realised and decided that we want the lady to be our main character. The screen shot on the left is of the jump shot which is used at the end of the trailer to build that suspense and leave the audience at a cliff hanger. The character becomes closer and closer with a fast pace and the pace is rhythm with the music playing. This editing technique I did see in the trailer “Insidious”. The jump shot is used of the “witches or monsters” coming closer. I have displayed screen shot of her face. Also the screen shot below is from the trailer “the conjuring”, this trailer supports the theology of a female being used as the main protagonist. As female are shown weaker, so easier to possess.)

(Insidious – Jump Shot) (The Conjuring)

(Both screenshots ( left & Right ) are from existing trailers. Both of them used the concept of credits between the clips in order to create the tension and answer the questions briefly that are created in the audience’s mind. We decided to use this concept in our trailer but merge the two ideas together; our project used the theme of three colours- black white and red. So we decided to use credits between the clips and change the background to black and use white and red for the writing. This would link with the poster of the film and the magazine cover. Underneath is an example of what our credits looked like in the trailer. We added the dates because the concept of our trailer is slightly different to the narrative of the other horror trailers. The date was essential as the trailer in itself is producing a time line for the audience. The green screen on the left was produced by me and the green screen on the right if from the trailer of the conjuring. The green screen is a generic code of a trailer and it is vital to provide legal prove or approval of what is being shown, so it is important to display the green screen on a trailer)

(The conjuring) (The Pontianak)

Montage

(A Montage was edited in the trailer. This montage occurs near enough to the end and it is done to create suspense and raise the tension for the audience. Also so that the audience do not loose their interest while watching the trailer. The aim of a trailer is to attract the audience and not bore them off before the release of the movie. The idea of having a montage in our trailer came from the movie “ the insidious” they have edited a very fast montage which matches the music’s pace and raises the tension bar for the audience and makes them sit on the edge of their seat. That’s the same affect we wanted to create and which we have succeeded because most of the comments made by our target audience was how the tension builds and the music plays a big part including the fast shots used.)

(The location that was used for the shooting was park with a forest. My house was used in order to layout the witchcraft props. After watching few trailers, we realised that we need to find a place where there isn’t loads of noise and is a lonely place because we need to remember that a horror convention is that mostly films are shot at an abandon place or at a forest. So we decided to use the forest nearby as that location comes across as abandoned. The props had to be bought in order to bring across the witchcraft aspect, as I watched the insidious trailer I noticed the props and how the old lady has camera’s etc to record the unknown activities. The two screen shots above are from the trailer. One is showing some of the props that have been used and the other shows the outbreak of the fire. Also the reason for making some scenes black and white is so that the footage links to the time era of when the footage was produced. As this footage was found so many years after. On the right I have the credits which I produced. I used a similar font to the credits in the movie the insidious However I believe that if I added the institution logo then the credits would seem more authentic. )
