NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washing-on County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in
Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transpor-ation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goodsnd services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also
emembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Ship-ments made their way up the Hudson, through the ChamplainCanal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south toAlbany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved toccommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways toispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included woodenoxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-se, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, noorrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothingf plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and dis-
ance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general storeswould take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with
orse could be rented by an individual or small business from avery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry
ravelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. Bysing both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores providedecessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the Gen-ral Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and
Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is inhe Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historicalociety, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further in-ormation call 518-747-9108 or email [email protected].

NEWS FROM THE DAIRY PRINCESS- Did you know thateach morning 25 million kids go to school, and some of them arehungry? A large number of children start their day off on thewrong foot by not eating a healthy breakfast. Hunger effectsstudents ability to learn and their attention span. We can change
this with a program called Breakfast in the Classroom. The pro-gram provides students with a healthy breakfast each morning atschool directly in their classrooms. Most school breakfast pro-grams require students to eat in the cafeteria and this can makestudents feel singled out from others. Thats why this programmakes sure that students eat in the classroom together with otherstudents. Research shows that schools providing universal schoolbreakfast (served free to all students) have higher breakfast par-ticipation, especially when breakfast is served in the classroom, resulting in a higher percentage of students consuming breakfast. These well-balanced, healthy meals include dairy products likemilk, yogurt, or cheese that helps a student reach their goal ofthree dairy products every day. The nine nutrients in milk helpto nourish their body as well as build their bones . The meal onlytakes about ten minutes to eat and provides plenty of benefitsfor the students. Students who eat breakfast have higher mathand reading skills than students that dont eat breakfast. I eatbreakfast each morning and know how important it is to mylearning skills. I recently attended an event at the New York StateCapital that supported and encouraged schools to add a Break-fast in the Classroom program. Please contact your school to
encourage them to offer this great program.
