The Queen’s University taskforce assigned to respond to callsto action outlined by the Truthand Reconciliation Commission(TRC) of Canada has released itspreliminary report, detailing theconsultation and information-gathering process and the longer-term plan moving forward.

“The TRC final report markeda significant juncture in Canada’shistory, and responding to thecalls to action directed toward thepost-secondary sector, as well ascontributing to the ongoingprocess of reconciliation, is a pri-ority for Queen’s,” says PrincipalDaniel Woolf. “We want theprocess and final recommenda-tions to be as comprehensive aspossible, and this preliminary re-port is a step toward achievingthat goal.”

The Truth and ReconciliationCommission Task Force atQueen’s formed following the re-lease of the TRC report, Honour-ing the Truth, Reconciling the Fu-ture, in December 2015. Made upof Aboriginal and non-Aboriginaladministrative leaders, faculty

and staff members, students, andAboriginal community represen-tatives, the task force met severaltimes during spring 2016 to sur-vey current offerings on campus,to prepare themes and questionsfor discussion, and to map outthe consultation phase scheduledfor fall 2016.

“Across campus, there is agreat deal of enthusiasm anddedication with respect to thisprocess, and to ensuring it ad-dresses, in a meaningful way, allof the calls to action directed atpost-secondary institutions,” saysJill Scott, Vice-Provost (Teachingand Learning), who co-chairs thetask force along with MarkGreen, Professor and AssociateHead, Civil Engineering. “Wealso want to go beyond thosecalls and thoughtfully contributeto reconciliation in a much largerand integrated way.”

The task force has been askedto consider the broader implica-tions of the TRC report, and howQueen’s can further support Abo-riginal students, staff, and fac-ulty; enhance and increase aca-demic programs and researchrelated to Indigenous peoplesand experience; and create a wel-

coming environment.The preliminary report pro-

vides a compendium of existinginitiatives that were designedwith the intention of supportingAboriginal students, creating aninclusive community, and pro-moting awareness of Indigenoushistories, perspectives, andknowledge. The list is not ex-haustive, nor does it address anygaps that may exist. The list willbe expanded as the task forcemoves through the consultationphase.

“A central component of thetask force’s work will be to iden-tify areas of strength and effec-tive practices, as well as areas inneed of improvement,” the reportsays. “This work will be informedby exploring the lived experi-

ences of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students, faculty, and staffat Queen’s, as well as best prac-tices found within the higher ed-ucation sector.”

Dates for consultation will beset for the fall. The task force iscommitted to engaging exten-sively with, among others,Queen’s students, faculties, Stu-dent Affairs, Aboriginal Councilof Queen’s University, and localcommunities. The task force willalso provide opportunity forfeedback in private and confidential settings, and welcomes writ-ten submissions via email ([email protected]) andregular mail.

Following the consultationphase, the task force will preparea final report, informed by theengagement with the communityThe task force anticipates that thfinal report will be submitted tothe provost and principal in Feb-ruary 2017.

An improved experience and designBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

As part of its ongoing consulta-tion and outreach activities, onJuly 6, Queen’s University held apublic information session to up-date neighbours and communitymembers on the construction ofRichardson Stadium and plans forthe official opening.

“I thank all of those who at-tended the information session,asked questions and shared theirthoughts on the new stadium,”says Michael Fraser, Vice-Princi-pal (University Relations). “Withthe revitalized stadium set to openin September, I look forward tocontinued consultation and en-gagement with the community onRichardson Stadium and otherQueen’s initiatives.”

At the information session,John Witjes, Associate Vice-Princi-pal (Facilities), reported that con-struction of the new stadium isprogressing well and is on sched-ule for the grand opening and in-augural football game, scheduledfor Sept. 17.

“The revitalization of the sta-dium has allowed for many de-sign improvements to enhance theuser experience,” he says. “Thestadium is fully accessible, has el-evated seating with improvedsightlines, and will include the lat-

est field turf technology. Also in-cluded are new lighting andsound systems, which will im-prove stadium operations and re-duce the impact on Queen’s neigh-bours. This was one of our keyfocuses on this project.”

The state-of-the-art sound sys-tem will focus amplified sound,by using distributed speakersaround the stadium that each op-erate at a lower volume. In addi-tion, the stadium’s bowl-shapeddesign will reduce overall soundlevels. The university has fol-lowed the recommendations ofthe sound consultant engaged onthe project.

The new lighting system usesshielded, higher lights that directdownward and focus on the fieldsurface. This provides enhancedfield level lighting and reduceslight spillover outside the sta-dium. In addition, the new eastparking lot lights are dark skycompliant, a state-of-the-art tech-nology that minimizes light pollu-tion and reduces light spilloverfrom the parking lot. The univer-sity also commissioned an arboristto help reduce the impact to exist-ing trees and has increased thenumber of trees on site.

With the elimination of the run-ning track, the overall footprint of

the stadium has shifted to the eastand north. While the east side ofthe stadium is in the same position,the west side is roughly 40 feet fur-ther east, creating more space be-tween the stadium and the westernboundary of the property. Themain entrance is now convenientlyon the stadium’s east side.

“The new stadium will includea better experience and upgradedamenities for all those coming tothe venue. Queen’s looks forwardto special preview tours for ourneighbours as construction nearscompletion and will also be shar-ing a final program for the sta-dium opening shortly,” says LeslieDal Cin, Executive Director, Ath-letics and Recreation.

The stadium offers integratedand varied seating options andimproved sightlines, bringing thefans closer to the field action. Anarray of enhanced amenities in-cludes a new box office, newwashrooms, concessions, an upperconcourse with access to bothsides of the field, a new videoboard and sound system, modernstadium lighting, and paved park-ing with reserved access. For thepress and media, the stadium isfully TV compatible with desig-nated work stations and TV cam-era spaces within the new pressbox.

A thoughtful leader and ‘steward’ for Queen’sBY WANDA PRAAMSMA, SENIORCOMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

When reflecting on his ap-proach as provost, Benoit-AntoineBacon emphasizes the importanceof stewardship.

“I think leadership and stew-ardship need to go hand in hand.There is a crucial element of careinvolved in stewardship,” saysQueen’s new provost and vice-principal (academic). “When youlook at an institution like Queen’s,with a 175-year history, you needto look at it in terms of caring – forthe traditions, for the strengths.And part of that caring is to makesure we remain relevant overtime. We should all feel like stew-ards of the university and its fu-ture success.”

Dr. Bacon, who began asprovost this month and is a mem-ber of the Department of Psychol-ogy, is deeply passionate aboutthe inner workings of the humanbrain and how we “see” the world– what is called visual neuro-science, or how our brain recon-structs visual reality.

Without a doubt, decades inpsychology, the science of humanthought and behaviour, providesinsight into how to best steer alarge and complex institution.

“I loved my studies, I love be-ing a professor of psychology, andI think it’s very useful in every-thing I do,” says Dr. Bacon, whohas held professorships and leadadministrative roles at ConcordiaUniversity and Bishop’s University.

Early in his career, Dr. Baconplayed a role in navigatingBishop’s out of difficult times,when low enrolment, labour un-rest, and financial issues sent theuniversity into crisis.

“That experience showed methat this kind of stewardship mat-ters. We are here to create an opti-mal space, where faculty, staff,and students can do their bestwork,” says Dr. Bacon.

By ‘we,’ Dr. Bacon means theentire Queen’s administration, butmore specifically the work he willdo alongside Principal and Vice-

Chancellor Daniel Woolf. “Daniel is an impressive leader

with a strong vision, and histenure of seven years and count-ing as principal speaks to that,”says Dr. Bacon. “It is important inany institution to have a principaland provost who complementeach other and are aligned in theirthinking. I am very confident thatDaniel and I have that.”

Experimentation anda shifting landscape

Regarding his research, Dr. Ba-con talks of how every image thebrain sees is filtered twice – firstby our perceptual, sensory sys-tems, our eyes and complete phys-iology – and second, cognitively,through the mental processes andaccumulated images used to makesense of what we see.

“Top-down, cognitive inputimpinges on our perceptions andshapes them,” he says, going on to

explain how creativity is essen-tially the ability to suspend theobvious interpretation of theworld and go with alternative in-terpretations.

That ability to suspend the ob-vious interpretation is importantat the university, where Dr. Baconsays experimentation is and willbe essential for continued success.

“One of the things that at-tracted me here was Queen’s verypowerful combination of a strongresearch portfolio and a truly first-class student experience. Notmany universities in Canada doboth of those things really well,”he says.

“The challenge is how can wecontinue to protect and developthose two things conjointly, in fullrespect of the traditions, of thestrengths, of the history of the uni-versity – and at the same time askourselves, how is the world

changing and how do we adjustour approach and still stay true toourselves while adapting to achanging world?”

In particular, Dr. Bacon seesgreat opportunity in increasingand progressing Queen’s digitaland global presence – two areasthat he says complement and in-fluence each other, and strengthenother areas.

“Digitalization and internation-alization, especially taken to-gether, will increase our ability tocontribute to solving the burningissues of our time, whether diver-sity and inclusion, climate changeand sustainability, or social justice,including access to education.And all of this together works tobolster the university’s reputationas a whole.”

Dr. Bacon emphasizes that thefuture requires creative thinking,and addressing the shifting needs

of students – notably, students en-tering university around 2025,those who have had the richestimmersion in the digital world.

“As the university’s chief aca-demic, budget, and operating offi-cer, I have the responsibility ofmaking sure everything runs aswell as it can. I look forward toworking with everyone to thatend, but I think just as impor-tantly, we need to take a longerview, to five, 10, 20 years fromnow. What do we need to do to-day to be successful then.”

Key to that longer view isbuilding on the direction that hasalready been established by Prin-cipal Woolf, including through theuniversity’s Strategic Framework.The provost is grateful to the prin-cipal for the opportunity to be atQueen’s – at first word of theavailable position, Dr. Bacon knewit wouldn’t be something he couldturn down, even though it meantleaving his hometown of Montrealand important partnerships in thecity.

“I am really excited to be here –Queen’s is an exceptional placewith a strong alumni community,great staff and faculty, and incred-ible students – they are a very tal-ented and successful group whohave always had a strong voice oncampus and who stay engagedwith every part of university life.I’ve already met with studentleaders, including Rector CamYung, and I look forward to work-ing together in the years ahead.”

Benoit-Antoine Bacon wasnamed provost and vice-principal(academic) by Principal DanielWoolf. The provost is the univer-sity's chief academic, budget, andoperating officer. In these roles,Dr. Bacon is responsible for thedevelopment of the university’sbudget, as well as oversight of ac-ademic program developmentand review under the Queen’sUniversity Quality AssuranceProcesses. He also works with hisfellow vice-principals and seniorleadership team to ensure thatoperational planning is fully inte-grated across the university,aligns with the university’s strate-gic vision, and is supported by anappropriate allocation of re-sources.

Momentum continues to build at Queen’sBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

In just a few days the majorityof students will arrive on campusand Daniel Woolf, Principal andVice-Chancellor, is ready to wel-come them back.

Principal Woolf took a few mo-ments to share his reflections ofthe past year with the Gazette anddiscuss his goals and priorities for2016-17.

GAZETTE: The 2015-16 aca-demic year seemed to be a partic-ularly exciting one for Queen’s.How do you plan to build on themomentum of the last year?

DANIEL WOOLF: Well, it wasa very exciting year. Between thenaming of the Dan School ofDrama and Music thanks to a $5million donation from Aubreyand Marla Dan, the naming of theSmith School of Business after anunprecedented $50 million dona-tion from Stephen Smith, the No-bel Prize in Physics, the installa-tion of a third Rembrandt gifted tous from Drs. Alfred and IsabelBader and the incredible close ofthe Initiative Campaign, we haveso many people to thank for theirextraordinary generosity. How-ever, it is important to rememberthat we cannot rest on our laurelsand I view this as a fantasticlaunch into our 175th anniversaryyear. Now is the time to acceleratethat momentum, so I have quite afew plans that I’m working onwith our new provost, the othervice-principals and the board. Iam looking forward to anotheryear of good discussions and aca-demic governance at Senate. Andof course, the opening of the revi-talized Richardson Stadium willbe a particularly exciting momentfor our university this fall.

QG: Enhancing the studentlearning experience remains a keypriority in the university’s strate-gic framework. How can Queen’scontinue to improve in this areaover the course of the next year?

DW: We will be revisiting andupdating some of our strategicplans of the last few years, andpushing for further advances inareas where we are alreadystrong, such as the provision ofonline courses and the measure-ment of learning outcomes. Wehave also been offering longer-term internships, which con-tribute to greater experientiallearning opportunities and weplan to continue that as well.

That said, there are some lin-gering and significant challenges.I still think we can improve on thenumber of research opportunitiesthat are available for undergradu-ate students. I would say thatwhile the general student learningexperience scores very high with

undergraduate students, there isroom to improve with respect tothe graduate student experience.So, Dean of Graduate StudiesBrenda Brouwer, Provost Benoit-Antoine Bacon, the SGPS and Iwill be working on ways that wecan advance things in that area.I’m pleased with early discussionswith the new presidents of theAMS and SGPS on both these is-sues.

QG: What are some of yourgoals and priorities for advancingresearch excellence at Queen’s in2016-17?

DW: Last year was a fantasticone for research at Queen’s, be-tween the Nobel Prize and theBreakthrough Prize in ParticlePhysics, the work of the CanadianClinical Trials Group being recog-nized, and the many honours re-ceived by our individual facultymembers and research groups.That being said, we’re not wherewe need to be for a major Cana-dian U15 institution. In terms ofTri-Council awards, we do quitewell on the NSERC side, but I’dlike to focus this year on improv-ing the metrics with CIHR andSSHRC awards. The other areathat I’d like to work on is interna-tional research collaborations, soVice-Principal (Research) StevenLiss and Associate Vice-PrincipalKathy O’Brien and I will be work-ing to find ways in which we canencourage them.

Faculty renewal is an urgentpriority. We have done remarkablelittle hiring of tenure track facultyover the last number of years andthat’s a concern. We have a greatacademic staff here, but there’s awhole generation of young andmid-career researchers out therethat we would all dearly love tobring to Queen’s. Provost Bacon

and I are committed to workingwith the deans and academicunits on a solution to that.

QG: While we’re on the topic,how can Queen’s continue tobuild upon its internationalizationstrategy over the coming year?

DW: I have a number of inter-national visits planned for theyear, including one to the UK, oneto Israel with the Royal Society ofCanada, and others to China andIndia in the fall. We are doingvery well in terms of improvingour undergraduate visa-holdingstudents – that’s gone up by a sig-nificant percentage (from a rela-tively small base) over the lastthree years. We’re fully confidentwe will hit our 10 per cent goal by2019 and indeed it may well betime for a strategic discussionwith the Board to determine whata suitable, longer term number is.

Ultimately, one of the goals isto improve our standing in the in-ternational rankings. While wedon’t, and never should, hitch ourcart entirely to that horse, rank-ings are a reality of the modernworld, and if one is competingwith other universities globally,we must note that people do payattention to them. I am hopefulthat recent achievements like theNobel Prize and perhaps greatersuccess in nominating our re-searchers for significant interna-tional awards can lead us downthe right path.

We need, for instance, to en-courage our faculty to apply forvisiting fellowships at places likethe Institute for Advanced Studyin Princeton, or the National Hu-manities Centre in North Car-olina; or to apply for major re-search time awards such asGuggenheim fellowships. And weneed to ensure that when they are

successful, their departments areable to maintain course offeringsduring their absence.

QG: Looking ahead, how willthe university continue to addressits financial competitiveness?

DW: Well, financial sustainabil-ity is the one driver that supportsall others in the strategic frame-work, including support for ouracademic mission, so we con-stantly have to stay focused onthat, as mundane and unexcitingas it sounds. I and my colleaguesin senior administration continueto work with our employeegroups and others around theprovince on a reform to the pen-sion plan and its possible migra-tion to a sector-wide or multi-em-ployer jointly sponsored pensionplan because the pension problemremains a significant financial riskfor the university.

I have also asked Provost Ba-con and Deputy Provost TeriShearer to make progress on acost-containment exercise to en-hance our procurement ability.And, I’ll be working with the HRdepartment on improving and en-hancing our current talent man-agement program so that we canreward and promote peoplewithin the university.

QG: What challenges and op-portunities lie ahead for Queen’sin 2016-17?

DW: In the current fiscal envi-ronment, the financial challengesare always there. We live in aprovince that, for the last severalyears, has projected a significantdeficit. However, together with oursister institutions, we will be hav-ing discussions with the provinceon modifications to the province’sfunding formula over the course ofthis year and I expect to be a littlemore closely involved with this asthe current Vice-Chair of the Coun-cil of Ontario Universities.

This year, one particular area offocus will be the revitalization ofQueen’s historic place as a majorprovider of, and educator in, pub-lic policy. I don’t just mean theSchool of Policy Studies, but thefact that the university, as a whole,has been a significant source ofcounsel to government and train-ing ground for career public ser-vants over the last century. But wedon’t own the field anymore andhaven’t for a while. We’ve got a lotof competition out there at themoment, and that is one reasonwhy I’ve empaneled a Principal’sCommission on the Future of Pub-lic Policy at Queen’s.

Finally, I think we need to viewall of these things over the longterm. Partly because of some fairlyurgent fiscal issues over the pastdecade, I think we’ve become a lit-tle too fixated in recent years onannual metrics, whether we’re

talking about financial sustainabil-ity or, for that matter, research.Nobel Prizes in science or, majorpublications in the humanitiesand social sciences, are not short-term outcomes.

Metrics are important, ofcourse, but I think we all need toask ourselves where we like to seeQueen’s in 30 or 40 years, whenmany of us will be long gone anda generation of faculty and staffbeing born now are stewardingthe institution. I go back to my in-stallation speech from 2009 andsubsequent essays like The ThirdJuncture where I noted that if wewant to be a leading university,not just in 2019, but in 2050 or2060, we have to really do our bestto plan for the long term and tryto imagine (as best we can fromimperfect evidence and the lack ofan absolute ability to predict thefuture) what students will trulyneed. We must identify global so-cial problems and emerging areasof research that we at Queen’s cancontribute to. Of course there are ahuge number of unknowns—wecan best deal with those by ensur-ing that there is a culture here thatlooks forward, and has the capac-ity to respond quickly and deci-sively to changing circumstances.

I’ve always said that the great-est challenge for Queen’s is to notconstantly fall back on traditionand our past achievements, but tobe prepared to adapt to change.Yet, one of the things I’ve been re-ally impressed by over the pastseven years has been the greatdeal of flexibility I’ve seen at thisuniversity, which helps us to capi-talize on our opportunities.

QG: Are there other things youare looking forward to in the yearahead?

DW: This will undoubtedly bea special year for Queen’s, as weofficially launch into our 175th an-niversary in October. The 175thplanning committee and individu-als from across campus haveplanned so many great things forus on a very limited budget and soI must thank them for all of theirhard work. Even with a few bits ofscaffolding still visible and activeconstruction underway, our cam-pus has never looked more beauti-ful and we are on the verge ofopening the revitalized Richard-son Stadium. We also are hosting anumber of major conferences thisyear, including the Joanna BriggsCollaboration, the TobaccoEndgame Summit, and the RoyalSociety of Canada’s Annual Gen-eral Meeting. It is incredible whenyou think about the fact that thisuniversity is older than Canada it-self, so we want to make this yeara particularly exciting one for ourcommunity, and I think we arewell on our way to doing just that.

After an exciting year for Queen’s, Principal and Vice-Chancellor Daniel Woolfsays it is time to ‘accelerate that momentum’ as the university celebrates its 175thanniversary during the 2016-17 academic year.

Beginning a new graduate pro-gram in a new city can be chal-lenging. Getting to know yourpeers and settling into your re-search program is both exciting,and intimidating. Luckily, when Istarted as a young Master’s stu-dent at the Centre for Neuro-science studies (CNS) over fiveyears ago, I heard about the Neu-roscience Outreach Program(NOP), went to my first meeting,and I’ve been involved ever since.

Being part of the NOP servedas a great way for me to connectwith fellow students, as well asbeing a part of an environmentthat fosters new ideas, and givesback to the community. Given theinterdisciplinary nature of theCNS, the outreach program pro-vides both new and current grad-uate students with a way to con-nect with each other, as well as aplatform for graduate students totake something they are passion-ate about and translate it into acommunity program, allowingstudents to give back to the publicin a social, informed, and mean-ingful way.

The NOP is a student-run ini-tiative that began in 2005 as ameans for graduate students inthe CNS at Queen’s to engageKingston and surrounding com-munities about neuroscience. Ourhope is to create sustainable com-

munity projects ranging fromboth educational to social, and ofcourse, all of them are fun.

The objectives of the NOP arefar reaching, from getting youngkids motivated and excited aboutneuroscience through interactiveactivities, to keeping adults andseniors informed about scientificfindings and brain health. Ourpartnership with the communitycurrently includes 11 diverse pro-grams and activities that takeplace in schools, hospitals, andpublic spaces.

Several of our initiatives en-gage a younger audience, from asyoung as two to 10 years old inSparks, Brownies, Beavers, andCubs participating in Brain Badge,to Grades 4 and 5 students receiv-ing classroom-based sessions ledby neuroscience students culmi-nating in a day-long visit to CNSlaboratories on Brain AwarenessDay. In partnership with Queen’sEnrichment Studies Unit, we alsohost a course for Grades 7 and 8students whereby they take therole of neuroscience investigatorsand use various research toolsthey learn about through hands-on activities.

New this year, CESAP (Con-cussion Education Safety andAwareness Program) educates ele-mentary and high school students,as well as athletes and coachesabout concussion. Another eventavailable for high school studentsis Brain Bee, an international com-petition focused on neuroscience

facts and structured like a spellingbee. Apart from schools, we havealso developed programs along-side local hospitals.

In partnership with KingstonGeneral Hospital, neurosciencestudents visit the adolescent psy-chiatry ward twice a week to en-gage youth in a social programbased on exercise and crafts. Yetanother program, held at St.Mary’s of the Lake Hospital, ourSocial Club program invites pa-tients to participate in variouscrafts and games on a monthly ba-sis.

We are also involved in initia-tives aimed at the general public,including Science Rendezvous,led by the Faculty of Education,and our Public Lecture Series. Ourbooth at Science Rendezvous dis-plays fun and interactive neuro-science demos and experiments.The Public Lecture Series dissemi-nates the research behind varioushot topics, changing yearly. Forexample, this year we had expertsdiscuss autism, concussion, andstroke. In order make our out-reach efforts available to every-one, we offer a lecture series fo-cused on topics of interest toseniors at a retirement residence.

I am very proud to be part ofsuch an exceptional organization.Together with enthusiastic teammembers and amazingly support-ive staff, we are able to offer animpressive breadth of programsboth in terms of variety of topicsand target audiences to Kingston

and surrounding communities.The NOP has recently been recog-nized for our outreach efforts,winning first prize for best localSfN chapter from the CanadianAssociation for Neuroscience Ad-vocacy Committee, as well as hon-orable mention for student initia-tive, Allen Champagne, the leadof CESAP. We have also been the

recipients of a CIHR OutreachAward and a Community Foun-dation Grant.

Every day, people walking orbiking through Queen’s campusbenefit from the vision and gen-erosity of Pat McNally (Sc’39). Mr.McNally was one of the donors tothe University Avenue revitaliza-tion project, completed in 2008.The pathway east of UniversityAvenue between Kingston Halland Nixon Field was named Pro-fessors’ Walk by Mr. McNally, inhonour of his Queen’s professors.

“Ten years ago, when construc-tion on the project had juststarted, I visited Pat at his home. Iremember he was energetic andastutely aware of the progress onthe project. He offered insightfuladvice that ultimately helped theproject move forward,” says TomHarris, Vice-Principal (Advance-ment).

The project restored UniversityAvenue as the iconic and ceremo-nial main street of campus. Therestoration widened sidewalks tocreate more space for people andgreenery, increased bench seatingand made the roadway more ac-cessible for pedestrians and cy-clists. The project received theCity of Kingston’s 2011 Livable

City Design Award of Merit forContext, Accessibility and Com-munity Significance.

At 101 years of age, Mr. Mc-Nally passed quietly on June 3 inWaterdown, Ont. He knew thatanything is possible if you arelucky enough to have family tosupport you and education toguide you. Queen’s pride runsdeep in the McNally family. Nineof Mr. McNally’s descendantsgraduated from the university:sons Michael (Sc’68); Chris (Sc’77);and Paul (PhD’75); and grandchil-dren Heather (Artsci’01, MSc’04);Simon (Sc’96); Gregory (Sc’10);Jennifer (Artsci’04); Victoria(Artsci’00); and Beth (Sc’00).

“I remember being struck byPat’s pride for Queen’s and love ofhis family,” says Dr. Harris.

Drawing on his family's back-ground as homebuilders and his

education as a mining engineer,Pat had a successful professionallife, first in the hard rock mines ofnorthern Quebec, then in generalconstruction in Montreal and theMaritimes, and ultimately as part-ner and chief engineer of S. Mc-Nally & Sons with his brothers. Hewas a pioneer who helped buildthe infrastructure of southern On-tario, especially below ground,where his innovative mining tech-niques created the region’s mostprominent tunnelling contractor.

Mr. McNally retired in 1979 andspent his post-retirement years asa successful investor, incessantbenefactor to young people andsupporter of community needs.He paid tuition for many youngpeople and helped young familiespurchase their first homes. Hewas, in various ways, indispensa-ble in the startups of Clappison

Veterinary, C&M McNally Engi-neering, McNally Robinson Book-sellers, QNX Software Systemsand McNally Jackson Booksellers.He was a longtime benefactor andvolunteer with Queen’s as well asthe Royal Botanical Gardens, theBruce Trail Conservancy and theRotary Club. In 2015, he set up afamily foundation to providerecreation for families, startingwith a new skating oval now near-ing completion in Memorial Parkin Waterdown.

Pat McNally married AnneElizabeth (Libby) Powell in Mon-treal and together they raised foursons and a daughter. He was pre-deceased by Libby and by his sixsiblings. He is remembered bysons John, Michael, Paul andChristopher, daughter Joyce Po-lice,19 grandchildren and 22great-grandchildren.

The updated Events Calendar(queensu.ca/eventscalendar) offersimproved accessibility and a re-sponsive mobile-friendly design.Each event also includes links for

social media and email sharing, aswell as a printable version of theevent details.

Offering a new, more flexibletagging system to categorize andfilter events by faculty/school orevent type, and to create customRSS feeds to display on other web-sites, the Events Calendar also hasa special tag to highlight eventsrelated to the Queen's 175th an-

niversary celebrations, which willautomatically be displayed on the175th anniversary website, due tolaunch this fall.

“Queen’s 175th anniversary cel-ebrations were the impetus for en-hancing and updating the Queen’sevents calendar to launch in timefor the fall semester,” Helena Deb-nam, Executive Director, Univer-sity Marketing, explains. “Alongwith public lectures by ourrenowned faculty and invitedguests form other institutions,Gaels games and recreationalevents, art exhibits, theatre andmusical performances, and cul-tural activities that are at the coreof our vibrant campus life, therewill be an additional slew ofevents this year, organized andhosted by faculties, departments,and units across campus tied tothe year-long 175th anniversarycelebrations.”

Access to the calendar for post-ing events is based on Queen’s

NetID credentials, meaning anyfaculty, staff or student with an ac-tive NetID can register and addevents. Events posted to the calen-dar, which drew more than325,000 pageviews in 2015, shouldbe Queen’s events – organized,hosted and/or sponsored byQueen’s faculties, schools, depart-ments, service and support units,administrative units, researchunits and governing bodies, in-cluding all sanctioned activities ofstudent government bodies andofficial student clubs. Notices ofcommunity events happening oncampus are also welcome.

“The Marketing team is pleasedto be able to provide a one-stopplatform where individuals in theQueen’s community can both shareinformation about the events theyare hosting, and also learn aboutall the activities that student, fac-ulty, staff, and alumni, as well asmembers of the greater Kingstoncommunity, can be involved in

Months of hard work and longhours have paid off for the sixQueen’s University students whoco-founded RockMass Technolo-gies.

The company won the Queen’sInnovation Connector SummerInitiative (QICSI) Venture PitchCompetition, beating out sevenother teams for the top prize of$30,000 in seed-funding.

RockMass Technologies isworking to improve the safety andefficiency of geological mappingin the mining, civil engineering,and exploration industries. Ac-cording to the company, the de-

vice “automatically maps a rockface while the software analysesthe data and breaks it down intokey information that is used to de-termine the structural stability of atunnel, mine shaft and/or rockface.”

The technology is based on re-search conducted at Queen’s byProfessor Joshua Marshall andPhD candidate Marc Gallant. Dr.Marshall and Mr. Gallant patentedthe technology through PARTEQand the QICSI students licensed it.

“We are so fortunate to havethis great technology to use. It’sreally great to be able to commer-cialize Queen’s research and takeit to market,” says Matas Sriu-biskis, Chief Executive Officer of

RockMass Technologies. Mr. Sriubiskis (Artsci’17) and

his teammates Shelby Yee (Sc’16),Chief Operating Officer, MattGubasta (Artsci’17), Chief Finan-cial Officer, Boyang Fu (Cmp’16),Lead Software Developer, RigersRukaj (Sc’17), Chief TechnologyOfficer, and Nichola Trinh (Sc’17),Chief Business Development Offi-cer, were overjoyed to win thepitch competition. While theysavoured the moment withfriends and the other QICSI par-ticipants, they had already startedlooking ahead.

“This (win) is fantastic, but wehave to keep working,” Mr. Sriu-biskis says. “We’re heading toclients’ mines and worksites in

September, and we are developingnew connections with companies.We are also looking at developingdifferent extensions for our tech-nology as well.”

Three other companies re-ceived awards following the pitchcompetition. The judges awarded$20,000 in seed-funding to bothNorthSprout – which developed agel-based germination medium toallow seeds to grow strong andhealthy faster and with less water– and Tandem Therapy – a soft-ware platform to support the rela-tionship between therapists andtheir patients. Paperweight Tech-nologies, which is improving thehome printing experience, alsowon $10,000 in seed-funding.

QICSI, a 17-week paid intern-ship where students collaborate tolaunch their own ventures, has ex-isted for five years. Greg Baving-ton, Executive Director of QIC,says the venture pitches keep get-ting stronger each year.

“Every year we refine the pro-gram to better meet the needs ofthe students,” Mr. Bavington ex-plains. “And as awareness growsof the Summer Initiative, our flag-ship program, and our other offer-ings, we continue to attract high-achieving students and directthem to programs that best fittheir needs and interests.”

A total of 15 Queen’s Universityresearchers have received morethan $2.8 million in funding fromthe Ontario Research Fund.Kingston and the Islands MPP So-phie Kiwala made the announce-ment Tuesday, Aug. 23 at an eventat Goodwin Hall.

“We are proud to invest in thegroundbreaking, world-class re-search being conducted at Queen’sUniversity,” says Ms. Kiwala.“Our researchers are pivotal tobuilding a knowledge-driveneconomy in Ontario, one that willdraw investment and strengthenour province’s competitive edge.The fact that we have 15 re-searchers in Kingston and the Is-lands receiving these competitiveawards is something for which wecan all be enormously proud.”

Included in the announcementwere two Early ResearcherAwards and 12 Ontario ResearchFund – Infrastructure Awards.Molecular genetics professor Vir-ginia Walker received Queen’ssole award in the Large Scale Ap-plied Research Project category tosupport her work in Canada’snorth – using leading-edge ge-nomic science to assist in manag-ing the population of Arctic Char.

The Research InfrastructureAwards provide research institu-tions with funding to help supportinfrastructure needs, such as mod-ern facilities and equipment. Theawards were presented to re-searchers in a wide range of fields –with projects ranging from geneticsequencing of invasive species toimproving computer-assisted sur-gery for patients with breast cancer.

It’s a bit like picking a dancepartner.

At least, that’s the analogy thatAndrew Pollard (Mechanical andMaterials Engineering), Queen'sResearch Chair in Fluid Dynamicsand Multi-Scale Phenomena,chooses when he talks about therelationship that he and otherQueen’s researchers have devel-oped with the cement giant La-farge, in particular with its Bath,Ont., plant .

A few years ago both partiesstepped on to the dance floor, verytentatively, but to take Dr. Pol-lard’s analogy and extend it, asthey have gotten to know eachother the steps and the style haveimproved, slowly evolving from asimple foxtrot to something ascomplex as a square dance withmultiple partners.

Many companies pride them-selves on being socially responsi-ble, but Lafarge is particularly se-rious when it comes to fightingclimate change. There are goodreasons for this. Making cement isan energy-intensive business – thekilns that are used must be heatedto 1,450 C – about a quarter of thetemperature of the surface of thesun. Given how widespread theuse of cement is – it’s the world’smost-common construction mate-rial – it isn’t surprising that itsmanufacture accounts for approxi-mately five per cent of all green-house gases worldwide. As theworld’s leading producer, it is esti-mated that Lafarge is responsiblefor about one per cent of all emis-sions worldwide. If they could re-duce that number, the companycould actually make a noticeabledent in the amount of greenhousegases reaching the atmosphere.

That was what initially pro-pelled Rob Cumming, at the timethe environment and public af-fairs manager at the company’sBath plant, to reach out to Dr. Pol-lard, who was working with theQueen’s Sustainable BioeconomyCentre.

What Mr. Cumming offeredQueen’s was a chance to experi-ment with a working plant to seeif they could reduce the green-house gases being produced. Thelessons learned would be applica-ble in other industries as well. Dr.

Pollard would be joined by War-ren Mabee (Geography and Plan-ning) , Canada Research Chair inRenewable Energy Developmentand Implementation, and DarkoMatovic (Mechanical and Materi-als Engineering), an expert in fluiddynamics, among other subjects.Other Queen’s faculty involved in-cluded Neal Scott (Geography andPlanning), Sharon Regan (Biology)and the late Ted Grandmaison(Chemical Engineering).

The challenge was to see if La-farge’s emissions could be re-duced by substituting new fuelsfor at least some of the coal andcoke being burned in the kiln. Forevery tonne of coal replaced by anon-fossil fuel, you can get a dra-matic reduction in greenhouse gasemissions, typically between 50 to80 per cent, but sometimes as highas 90 per cent. Initial efforts fo-cused on using what is termed“virgin biomass,” such as switch-grass or hay bales. The main chal-lenge was that, at the time, therewere no real scaled-up suppliersof such fuels. Another idea that fo-cused on creating a fuel called the“Q-Pellet,” marble-sized fuel pel-lets created by heating wood in anoxygen-free environment – aprocess known as “torrefaction” –remains unrealized. The pelletscannot be produced in bulk. (That“Q” stands for Queen’s, by theway.)

The Queen’s researchers hit ona third possibility – using whatcan be termed “non-virgin” bio-mass – wooden hydro poles, con-struction debris, railway ties, usedshingles. All contain varying pro-portions of biomass. These sorts ofdebris are plentiful – always agood thing in a fuel source – andusing them to fire the kiln wouldstop them from winding up emit-ting greenhouse gases in landfillsites, a nice side-benefit.

David Hyndman of theQueen’s Office of Industry Part-nerships had a connection withLafarge stretching back severalyears – at one point he hadworked for Performance Plants, acompany that had been growingpossible bio-fuels at the Lafargesite. On joining Queen’s in Janu-ary 2012, he quickly got involvedin the project from the Queen’sside, helping Mr. Cumming writea successful application for a CMCCarbon Management Grant thatwould underwrite the work theQueen’s researchers wanted to un-dertake at Bath.

Work on testing the feasibilityof using these materials as fuel atthe Bath plant began in early win-ter 2013 with the installation ofequipment that could store, mixand then feed these new fuels intothe plant. Dr. Mabee’s team wouldmonitor carbon output before andafter the new fuels were intro-

duced to see whether they deliv-ered the hoped-for carbon reduc-tions. The full-scale test runs onthe three-year pilot project beganin summer 2014.

At a meeting open to the gen-eral public in June 2016, Lafargeannounced that they had achieveda nearly 10 percent reduction infuel-based carbon emissions,thanks to the use of these new fu-els. The company hopes to in-crease this to 30 per cent by 2020.

“We’re well on track,” says Mr.Cumming. “In fact, we’re proba-bly ahead of schedule on that.”

The cooperation betweenQueen’s and Lafarge has helpedthe company take some importantsteps in realizing their corporateresponsibility. More, the partner-ship and its early success hasbought them a measure of good-will among the local community,where news that the plant wasplanning on burning what wasfundamentally waste was greetedwith some scepticism. Based onthe findings of the Queen’s team,Ontario’s Ministry of the Environ-ment and Climate Change hasidentified the use of low-carbonfuels as a key way for the cementindustry to reduce its greenhousegas emissions.

The benefits for Queen’s havebeen considerable as well. Mastersand PhD students, along withpost-doctoral fellows in a number

of fields have been given real-life,hands-on experience – right downto sifting through dumpsters filledwith construction debris to figureout exactly what can be used. Thelead researchers benefit as well.

“We can see the fruits of ourlabours, which is very rewarding– particularly for researchers whowork on big problems that live in-side computers,” Dr. Mabee says.

There is still plenty of work todo – there are pressing questionsabout the water content in the fuel– too wet and it won’t burn hotenough to create the best kiln con-ditions and there may be prob-lems with spontaneous combus-tion during storage. Creating asupply chain to feed this or otherplants will be a challenge.

In the next stage of the project,Dr. Matovic will be looking at theburners inside the kiln to improvetheir efficiency at burning co-fuels– a mix of traditional coal andcoke and biomass. Researcherswill be taking the lead on differentstages of the current project, andother ambitious projects are cur-rently in the planning stages. TheIndustry Partnerships team will bekept busy coordinating re-searchers and projects – acting abit like the caller at a square dance(there’s that analogy again), tellingpeople where to go and when,and keeping all the relationshipsgoing. And soon they may be go-ing on the road – expanding theprogram to other Lafarge plants.If it happens, that’ll mean newpartnerships and new opportuni-ties for Queen’s researchers.

“Lafarge is a leader in advanc-ing alternative fuel for their indus-try,” says Steven Liss, Queen’sVice-Principal (Research). “The re-lationship with Queen’s has gar-nered outcomes that are mutuallybeneficial and address the globalissue of climate change. This isn’tthe end of the relationship, either.Queen’s and Lafarge are currentlyworking on their next venture.You could say that the band iswarming up, some new, and addi-tional partners will be hitting thefloor with some exciting newsteps. We are looking forward tothe results.”

Linking Indigenous studentsfrom around the worldBY ANDREW CARROLL,GAZETTE EDITOR

For Shyra Barberstock, a mas-ter’s student at Queen’s Univer-sity, the recently-held MatarikiNetwork Indigenous Student Mo-bility Program offered her someamazing opportunities.

First it was a chance to travel toNew Zealand and learn firsthandabout the Maori culture. Just asimportant, however, it was achance to meet with Indigenouspeople from around the worldand learn about their cultures.

“I love the whole idea of In-digenous people coming togetherfrom different countries to shareknowledge,” she says. “I thoughtthat was really powerful.”

Ms. Barberstock, an Anishi-naabe from the Kabaowek FirstNation in Quebec who grew up inOntario, attended the programalong with fellow Queen’s gradu-ate students Colin Baillie andNatasha Stirrett, as well as KelseyWrightson, a postdoctoral fellowin Indigenous Studies.

A three-year pilot program, theinaugural two-week event washosted by the University of Otago,starting on June 27, bringing to-gether students from four memberinstitutions of the Matariki Net-work of Universities (MNU) –Queen’s, University of WesternAustralia, England’s Durham Uni-versity and Dartmouth College inthe United States – to foster cul-tural exchanges and the under-standing of issues affecting In-digenous communities.

During the two weeks, partici-pants heard from Maori scholarshow geography, economics andpolitics influenced the social, cul-tural and economic developmentof the Maori. They were also en-couraged to think critically aboutwhat being Indigenous means,and about how to address issuesin their own communities –whether First Nations or Aus-tralian Aboriginal.

The learning experience alsotook place outside the classroomand the group visited a pair ofmaraes, meeting places that are avital part of Maori life.

“That was really special, get-ting the teachings from them andlearning more about their stories,and what’s important to them,”Ms. Barberstock says. “What Ifound really interesting is that theMaori people definitely have avery different history than theFirst Nations here in Canada. Butthere are synergies in the values ofFirst Nations people and Maoripeople, that community minded-ness, wanting to do things for thegood of the community.”

In her master’s thesis, Ms. Bar-berstock is exploring if there canbe a connection between innova-tion and reconciliation. Throughthis she is connecting with In-digenous entrepreneurs andfinding out the narrative behindtheir business and seeing if socialinnovation can contribute to rec-onciliation in Canada. An entre-preneur herself, the trip allowedher to gain a deeper understand-ing of her connections with

Maori partners.At the same time she also says

that she was impressed by thework being done to preserve theMaori language. At Te Kura Kau-papa Maori o Otepoti , a Maoriimmersion elementary school, theMatariki participants were wel-comed by a group of schoolchild-ren who sang in the Maori lan-guage and were well-versed in thecultural protocols of their people.

“That was really interesting be-cause it really inspired me and re-ally got me thinking about thingsthat we could do over here be-cause loss of Indigenous lan-guages is a big deal here inCanada,” she says. “A lot of In-digenous languages are going ex-tinct and we really need a revivalof Indigenous languages here. Iwas really inspired by their im-mersion.”

Next year the program will behosted at the University of West-ern Australia, with DartmouthCollege following up in 2018.

When it comes to understand-ing what the Bader InternationalStudy Centre (BISC) experienceentails, there is no one better toask than Daphne Lawson.

A ‘castle’original, Ms.Lawson (ArtHistory) is retir-ing after an in-triguing 22years of teach-ing at BISC, thelongest tenurefor any instruc-tor at Herst-monceux Castle in England.

The key to the BISC experience,Ms. Lawson explains, is the experi-ential learning on offer, somethingthat she helped start back whenthe first programs started in 1994.

When she was brought infounding executive director Mau-rice Yeates explained that incorpo-rating experiential learning intothe program was essential. Whilesuch learning is commonplace to-day, Ms. Lawson says she felt likethey were “pioneers” in 1994.

“Originally when we started Iwas the only person that took peo-ple out because the course was de-signed like that,” Ms. Lawsonsays. “So when (Dr. Yeates) hiredme for my one term, 22 years ago,he said I want you to take (the stu-dents) out every Friday and dopart of your teaching in front ofthe prime resource. It was un-heard of then, people didn’t do it.It was very inspirational of him soI put in a lot of work goingaround to St. Paul’s, CanteburyCathedral, the British Museumand all the art galleries before Istarted the job. It took off straightaway and by the second term Iknew I was there to stay, really,because it was such a novel way ofteaching.”

With the success of the teachingmodel for art history, it wouldlater be incorporated into otherprograms and courses, becoming acore educational component atBISC.

BISC has also opened up theworld to the students who arriveat the castle, Ms. Lawson explains.They experience different culturesand grow as they venture to newplaces such as Paris and Edin-burgh through the program or ontheir own.

“They get that whole Europeanextension and also I think they aretaught to think globally, which isvery important. They areequipped for a modern Canadianworld,” she says, adding that inthe early days few of her studentshad travelled. It’s a different storytoday. “Now they have travelled

before they even get here, some ofthem are very well travelled. So Ithink Canadians in general, youngCanadians, are becoming far moreglobal and far more outward look-ing than 22 years ago.”

Throughout her time at BISCMs. Lawson has also seen the rela-tionship with Queen’s flourish. Inthe beginning, when Alfred andIsabel Bader donated Herstmon-ceux Castle to Queen’s, there wasan adjustment period as the uni-versity grappled with how tomake best use of this gift an oceanaway. The result is a valuable re-source that few, if any, other uni-versities can offer.

“I think over a period of aboutfive years, (BISC) became muchmore integrated into Queen’s andthat relationship then grew andthat is really why the castle hasdone so well,” Ms. Lawson says.“It’s because we work within theQueen’s boundaries, we are an ex-tension of Queen’s. We are differ-ent but we are part of Queen’s andthat is something that developedreally during the first decade.”

What she also has seen first-hand is the strength of the friend-ships that the BISC students de-velop during their studies at thecastle. During a visit to Queen’s,she says, she attended an art his-tory class and noticed some of herformer students sitting together.They told her that their shared ex-perience at BISC had createdbonds that lasted long after theyleft the castle walls.

“I thought that was a rathernice compliment to BISC actually,that that is the case, that theymake these close friendships inthis sort of more-intimate environ-ment,” she says. “That’s whatBISC has to offer.”

While she is retiring from herfull-time duties, Ms. Lawson willcontinue to teach two summer up-per-year courses in art history atBISC.

Built in the 15th century, Herst-monceux Castle was purchased in1993 by Alfred and Isabel Bader anddonated to Queen’s. In 1994, after ex-tensive renovations, it began welcom-ing students. Since then, the castlehas attracted thousands of studentsfrom around the world who are drawnto its exceptional learning programs,which combine cutting-edge themeswith experiential learning opportuni-ties both locally and globally.

AMS executive aims to make a connectionBY ANDREW CARROLL,GAZETTE EDITOR

Tyler Lively (Artsci’16), Car-olyn Thompson (Artsci’17), andDavid Walker (Artsci’17) want tomake a difference for the studentsof Queen’s University

As the executive team of theAlma Mater Society (AMS) – Mr.Lively as President, Mr. Walker asVice-President (Operations) andMs. Thompson as Vice-President(University Affairs) – know theycan achieve their goals, but it willtake a lot of work.

Having taken office on May 1,the team has spent the summermonths learning the ropes of stu-dent government while also creat-ing a solid foundation – includingfilling more than 50 positionswithin the AMS – that will sup-port them as they move forward.

With the academic year aboutto start, the trio is excited aboutthe challenges and opportunitiesthat await them, such as connect-ing with their fellow students,one of the central pieces of theirsuccessful campaign platform.

“I think one of the big things,and it is something we talkedabout during the whole cam-paign, and it’s probably beentalked about in every AMS cam-paign, is that people say the AMS

is not in touch with the students,we’re not talking to students,we’re here in the JDUC, we’revery insular,” says Mr. Lively. “Ithink we’ve done a lot of workover the summer that is going toallow us to change that percep-tion and I think that is very im-portant for us because, at the endof the day, our ability to getthings done is based on the trustthat students have in us to be rep-resenting their interests and do-ing it in a professional and ac-

countable manner.”The summer has also allowed

the AMS team to learn how theycan best work together and to re-fine their plans. Already, it hasbeen a positive experience.

“I think a strength of our teamis that we have this collective vi-sion, which is at the end of theday we are here to serve studentsand make sure their voices are be-ing heard at an administrativelevel,” Ms. Thompson says. “Sohaving everyone here understand

that, be motivated by that and en-thusiastic about it, is somethingwe can only ask for and (the teamhas) taken it to the next step.”

Another priority for the AMSexecutive is improving the stu-dent experience, something thateach of the members says alreadysets Queen’s apart from other uni-versities. Students have access tomore than 300 clubs as well as nu-merous faculty societies and awide range of intramural sportsleagues. One of the team’s firstmoves has been to create an officeto improve the supports the AMSprovides to the clubs community,says Mr. Walker.

This is particularly helpful forincoming students as they seektheir own path at Queen’s.

“My advice to any incomingstudent is have fun, get involvedwith whatever it is you like, doyour own thing and be your ownperson and through that you willfind whatever it is you really like

whether it be student govern-ment, a club or intramurals orsomething within the Kingstoncommunity,” he says. “There areso many different options.”

Being involved with the AMShas also been a rewarding experi-ence for each of the executiveteam members and they are look-ing forward to the work that liesahead of them.

“Queen’s is a university thatgives students a real opportunityto be involved in setting the direc-tion of the university and helpingdefine the experience that stu-dents have at Queen’s,” Mr.Lively says. “I think we have a lotmore interactions with the univer-sity administration, we have a lotof spots on the governance bod-ies. You know when the AMStalks we are making a difference.”

Revitalization project opens up JDUCBY ANDREW CARROLL,GAZETTE EDITOR

Walking into the John DeutschUniversity Centre one is greetedby an open, bright space at itsheart, the result of a revitalizationproject led by the Alma Mater So-ciety (AMS).

While some scaffolding re-mains and last-minute details arebeing completed the new-lookJDUC will be ready for the arrivalof students in September, saysSam Anderson (Sc’17), the AMS’Managing Director of the StudentLife Centre.

The project began this springand entailed three main goals: therenovation of the Upper andLower Ceilidhs, as well as WallaceHall.

For nearly a century, the JDUChas served as a gathering place forthe students of Queen’s Univer-sity, and making it more invitingand functional was key.

“We have diverse student serv-ices, Queen’s departments, clubspaces and bookable rooms,” Mr.Anderson says. “This revitaliza-tion focused on the shared areas

that connect those to get morepeople coming in to see what theJDUC has to offer.”

The most obvious change is theaddition of a walkway along theeastern wall of the Upper Ceilidh.This plays a dual role of creatinggreater access to Wallace Hall aswell as offering more space whenevents are hosted in the JDUC.

A new skylight also helps withmaking the Lower Ceilidhbrighter while Wallace Hall itselfhas been spruced up as well. Thefloors have been refurbished andthe wooden walls have been re-paired.

“Wallace Hall has taken us a bitlonger because we’ve done a lot ofwork to make sure that we havethe right stains to preserve theoriginal wood for heritage rea-sons,” Mr. Anderson says. “Cu-

pido, our contractor, and BobPolegato of Physical Plant Serv-ices, the project manager, workedreally hard to make sure WallaceHall looks exactly as it was whenit was created.”

One difference, however, is theaddition of three large ceiling fansto help with air circulation, mak-ing the room cooler in the summerand warmer in the winter.

As a mathematics and engi-neering student, Mr. Andersonhas gained valuable experience bybeing involved in the project. Heisn’t the only one.

“This has been an amazing ex-perience for me to see construc-tion project management firsthand,” he says. “In addition to methere have been a number of stu-dents who have been very in-volved and that has been valuableto the students themselves and tothe project overall.”

A special opening event isplanned before the start of theschool year. Mr. Anderson saysthat the facility will be ready forregistration as the masses of stu-dents return to campus for an-other school year.

After starting the OUA football season on the road against the Laurier Golden Hawks and Guelph Gryphons the Queen’sGaels will open the revitalized Richardson Stadium on Sept. 17 against the Western Mustangs.

After 45 years of football at theold Richardson Stadium on WestCampus, the Queen’s Gaels saidgoodbye to the natural grass fieldand familiar stands at the end ofthe 2015 season.

With pressure to get back intothe playoffs after a year hiatus,Queen’s finished the 2015 regularseason with five wins and home-field advantage in the first roundof the OUA playoffs. Despite be-ing ousted by the CarletonRavens in the OUA quarterfinals,the Gaels can take pride in hav-ing upset the Yates Cup cham-pion Guelph Gryphons earlier inthe year on a record-setting 108-yard touchdown pass from NateHobbs to Matteo Del Brocco.

The newly-revitalizedRichardson Stadium stands readyfor its grand opening on Sept. 17against the rival Western Mus-tangs, and this season, Queen’swill play on artificial turf at home

for the first time in the footballteam's history.

While the offence will be look-ing for new rushing and receiv-ing leaders, quarterback NateHobbs is back as the starter in histhird season with the Gaels afterfinishing 2015 with the fifth-mostpassing yards in the OUA. PeterHannon and Matteo Del Broccoare expected to step into top re-ceiving positions after both hadsolid production last year. On theground, it’s Jonah Pataki’s turn totake the starting running backspot in his fourth year withQueen’s while the Gaels havedepth and options at the positionwith the likes of returnees AdamBlack and Brad Innis.

Defensively, the familiar facesat linebacker and in the backfieldshould overshadow the loss of acouple veteran linemen. MikeMoore, Justin Bowman andNelkas Kwemo return as anchorsin the linebacking core after bothfinishing among the OUA’s top

tacklers, despite an injury thatsidelined Kwemo for the finalthree games of the season. TheGaels have a wealth of third-yeartalent at the defensive back posi-tion, highlighted by JasonShamatutu, Matt Pendergast andChris Mackey, who all finishedwith over 35 solo tackles in 2015.

“This will be the third year ofthe current development cycle atQueen’s. A number of under-classmen have acquired somesignificant ‘on-the job’ trainingover the past two seasons thatshould pay dividends this year,”says head coach Pat Sheahan.“We are a work in progress withpotential to be in the hunt if wecan stay healthy at key some po-sitions.”

The Gaels open the season onthe road Sunday Aug. 28 againsthe Laurier Golden Hawks andSaturday, Sept. 10 against theGuelph Gryphons.

Dean Richard Reznick is pleasedto announce the appointment ofStéphanie Bélanger and HeidiCramm as interim co-scientific di-rectors of the Canadian Institute forMilitary and Veteran Health Re-search (CIMVHR).

Dr. Bélanger completed a PhD atthe University of Toronto in 2003and earned her MPA at the RoyalMilitary College of Canada in 2013.Dedicated to serving those whoserve us, Dr. Bélanger is co-founderof CIMVHR and has served as associ-ate scientific director since 2010.

Dr. Bélanger is a leader in militaryand veteran health research. Shehas published widely in the peer-re-viewed literature and her co-editedcollection Beyond the Line: Militaryand Veteran Health Research rankedseventh on the Hill Times Best 100

Books in Politics, Public Policy andHistory. She was a driving force be-hind the establishment of and nowserves as co-editor-in-chief for theJournal of Military, Veteran and Fam-ily Health. In 2011, Dr. Bélanger wasawarded the Royal Military Collegeof Canada Commandant’s coin inrecognition of her leadership in re-search and involvement in the mili-tary and veteran community, and in2013 she was honoured with theMinister of National Defence’s coinin recognition of her dedication andleadership in the advancement of

research on the women and leader-ship in the Canadian Forces. In 2015,she was inducted into the Legion ofHonour of the Four Chaplains Me-morial Foundation.

Dr. Cramm earned a Master ofScience in occupational therapy in2003 from Dalhousie University anda PhD in rehabilitation science atQueen’s. She subsequently com-pleted a post-doctoral fellowship atthe Ivey International Centre forHealth Innovation at Western Uni-versity. Dr. Cramm joined theQueen’s School of Rehabilitation

Therapy as an assistant professor in2013. A leader in strategic knowl-edge translation initiatives acrossCanada, she has served as head ofKnowledge Translation with CIMVHRsince 2014.

Dr. Cramm’s research focuses onmilitary and veteran family health,with an emphasis on mental health.She has authored numerous publi-cations and lectured extensively onher areas of expertise. In 2013, Dr.Cramm was awarded the GovernorGeneral’s Gold Medal for outstand-ing academic achievement.

Members of the Queen’s commu-nity, including Justice ThomasCromwell of the Supreme Court ofCanada, Queen’s Law ProfessorThomas S. Harrison, Dr. ChristopherMcCreery, Canada’s leading aca-demic expert on the Monarchy, andDr. Thomas Axworthy and Derek H.Burney, along with Hugh Segal alsopenned commentaries as did a num-ber of other distinguished Canadi-ans – and non-Canadians such asformer British Prime Minister TonyBlair and BMO senior executiveDavid Jacobson, a past US Ambassa-dor to Canada..

Sir Wilfrid Laurier was born onNov. 20, 1841 and the Governmentof Canada has declared the 175thanniversary to be a priority mile-stone in Canadian commemorationpolicy ahead of 2017 and the 150thbirthday of Canada.

“While Queen’s is better knownfor its connections to Sir John A.Macdonald, one of the founders ofthe school who is rightly celebratedand discussed, many today don’t re-alize the close ties Canada’s first

French Canadian Prime Minister, Wil-frid Laurier, had with our university,”Mr. Milnes says. “It was, after all, leg-endary Queen’s Professor O.D. Skel-ton, writing in the 1920s, whosebook Life and Letters of Sir WilfridLaurier helped cement Laurier’slegacy in the Canadian imagination.With Skelton’s stellar legacy in mind Iwas therefore pleased that so manymembers of the Queen’s family suchas Mr. Justice Cromwell contributedto my book. Their work demon-strates the value at Queen’s today ofunderstanding the proud connec-tions between our university andLaurier.”

Milnes also notes that Lauriervisited Queen’s in the 19th centuryand was honoured, along with LadyAberdeen – the day Queen’s becamethe first Canadian university toaward an honorary degree to awoman.
