PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION for when we cannot receive the Eucharist

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot

at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

RENEW MY CHURCH UPDATE: PASTOR NAMED FOR MERGED PARISH Dear parishioners of Queen of Angels and St. Matthias, You are all in my prayers during this Easter season as we begin to build our new reality as the Catholic presence in Lincoln Square. I would like to share with you the decision of Cardinal Cupich that I have been appointed the Pastor for the new parish to be formed from Queen of Angels and St. Matthias parishes as of August 1. I pray that the two parishes will work together to become one family, serving all people without exception and according to their needs. On each parish website is a short history of my priesthood as well as the letter from Cardinal Cupich appointing me and the emergency decree extending the merger date from July 1 to August 1 due to the pandemic. As we journey together through these challenging times, let us stay connected through prayer and reaching out to one another. I will begin to work with the leadership teams from both parishes to do what we can to make Christ more alive in us and through us as we merge our communities. Please keep checking the current parish websites and your emails so you can stay involved in this important work of forming the community of Queen of Angels and St. Matthias Parish. Please be assured of my prayers and support. God bless,

Monsignor Jim Kaczorowski

About Monsignor James T. Kaczorowski After ordination on May 9, 1973, Father Jim Kaczorowski was assigned to St. Michael Parish in the South Shore neighborhood. He was reassigned in 1981 as Pastor of St. Adalbert in Pilsen. There he worked with the Latino community on justice issues, catechesis in Spanish and urban renewal through the Resurrection Project. During this time, he also served as professor of medical ethics at the nursing college of St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital (1984-1987), was Dean of the parishes in Pilsen and Little Village (1988-1992) and President of the Presbyteral Council (1992-1996). In 2000, Father Jim became the Vicar for Priests while residing at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Since 2005, he has been Pastor at Queen of Angels Parish and the Dean of Deanery II-C. He was given the honorary title of Monsignor as a Chaplain to His Holiness in 2010. He has also been Administrator of Resurrection Parish in the Avondale neighborhood since September 21, 2018. Monsignor Jim is honored to be a parish priest, a servant leader in building God's kingdom on earth, and helping parishioners and priests to become the best possible versions of themselves—spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and physically.

GIVECENTRAL MEETS PARISH NEED During these unprecedented times, we urge our parishioners to use GiveCentral to support Queen of Angels. The business of the parish continues even if the church is closed. Thank you to those who have followed this request and, in the last few weeks, made new gifts or continued donations through GiveCentral. GiveCentral.org is a secure online system where parishioners create individual giving profiles with payment options ranging from direct debit (ACH) to credit cards. Every transaction is securely recorded and saved in your own payment history. Thank you to the increasing number of parishioners now making donations to Queen of Angels through our online donation service. By giving electronically, your regular gifts can be made consistently and easily as you continue to support our Catholic community. Donations can also be made on a one-time basis without creating a profile. It is convenient for

parishioners, reduces the risks associated with transporting checks or cash, and makes it easier for the parish to budget. On GiveCentral you can sign up to give separate donations in different events (categories or buckets), similar to using different envelopes for second collections. Once you locate Queen of Angels on the GiveCentral.org website, choose Sunday Collection or click “View More” to find these additional events: • Sharing Parish—BVM: Benefits our sister church in the Sharing program, Maternity BVM in Humboldt Park. • St. Vincent de Paul Donation: Normally at the holiday Mass on Memorial Day and other national holidays, for the

needs of the poor in our community. • Catholic Charities (May): Aids the efforts of Catholic social service ministries to help women, children and families in

need in Cook and Lake Counties. • Lyman Fund Donation: Enables children to remain in our parish school during a parent’s financial hardship. No matter how you choose to support the parish, thank you for your continuing participation in our mission.

LETTER FROM CARDINAL CUPICH: THE PLAN TO RE-OPEN OUR CHURCHES

May 17, 2020 Sixth Sunday of Easter Page Five

Dear Friends in Christ, These fifty days of Easter, leading to Pentecost, are marked by unprecedented suffering, as humanity has fallen victim to a perilous contagion. In addition to the threats to our physical wellbeing, we are suffering spiritually as the Covid-19 pandemic has required restrictions of our worship and active participation in the sacramental life of the Church. Surely, there have been moments in history when governments and rulers have persecuted Christians and banned their public worship. This is not one of them. Rather, the present restrictions come in response to an extreme medical emergency as local, state and federal authorities – specifically public health officials – legitimately fulfil their responsibilities to safeguard human life and the common good. They have based their reasonable guidance on careful consideration of empirical data and the best available disease-mitigation practices as they seek to contain the pandemic’s rampage through our communities. While everyone must exercise good citizenship in observing these restrictions, I call on the Catholic faithful, as advocates for justice and charity, to comply with these regulations. From the first pages of Scripture we learn that we indeed are “our brother’s keeper,” a truth that must inspire us as we are called to sacrifice. We should also be motivated to cooperate with public safety norms, given our reverence for life and human dignity. This is, at its heart, a moment to proclaim the breadth and depth of what it means to be pro-life, particularly as this virus preys on the most vulnerable in our midst. The good news is that a plan for a gradual re-opening of our churches has now taken shape, as I note below. However, since our movements will be restricted as that plan unfolds in different phases, your pastors and bishops will continue for the present time to offer Mass in private each day and to livestream and broadcast Masses

from our parishes and the archdiocese. I am particularly grateful to ABC-TV, Univision and Polvision in Chicago for giving us airtime every Sunday. These celebrations surely are not the same as gathering in our churches for Mass, but I know from hearing from many parishioners that they provide a great deal of solace and support in this time of uncertainty. We must be honest. We expect this situation to continue for some weeks, and any plan for reopening our churches for public worship must include every precaution to ensure public gatherings do not create a second wave of contagion, thus squandering the gains made through our sacrifice in these days. With those realities in mind, I am heartened to announce that we have reached an agreement with the Office of the Governor on a multi-phase Plan for re-opening our churches for the celebration of the sacraments, private prayer, adoration and Mass. As I share the Plan with you, both by way of an Executive Summary and the full Plan in the following pages, I want to assure you of my prayers for you and your family’s personal, material and spiritual wellbeing. I also express my appreciation to the many people on the archdiocesan staff and in the Office of the Governor for the many hours they have given to designing and fine tuning this agree-ment. Again, I call on all Catholics to seize this moment to exercise faith-filled citizenship in a way that reflects our deep regard for life, our calling as disciples of Jesus and our love of country. Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago Queen of Angels Parish is reviewing the archdiocesan plan and getting ready for online trainings which will begin this coming week. To read the executive summary and the full re-opening plan described by the Cardinal, please visit archchicago.org.

LEARNING CONTINUES FROM HOME Though the governor has extended the stay-at-home order through May 30 and announced that all Illinois schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year, Queen of Angels School continues with distance learning from home. Teachers have moved lessons online and created digital spaces to interact with their students, and families are adapting to continue instruction at home as best they can. Classes have not been able to meet in person at the school since Friday, March 13. Please visit the school’s Facebook page for daily video prayers, staff reading their favorite books to students, tributes to the graduating Eighth Graders, highlights from the virtual Spring Concert, and more at facebook.com/Queen-of-Angels-School-77467313549/.

A CALL TO PRAYER: A Light in the Darkness Prayer can help to strengthen our bonds with one another and with God, regardless of our faith identities. By turning to prayer, we call forth a light in the darkness. • Who we are: Volunteers from across the Archdiocese of

Chicago who feel called to accompany anyone feeling the need to pray during this time of uncertainty and isolation.

• What we offer: A phone line staffed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, as well as 24-hour voicemail and e-mail connections. Our prayer partners are here to pray with you — opening our hearts to God, asking for his blessings and peace.
