The School ofPolitics andInternationalRelations at QueenMary offers a livelyand stimulatingenvironment inwhich to study the political ideas,institutions andprocesses thatshape our collective life. Politics and international relationsare academic disciplines thatcover a diversity of interrelatedsubjects: the study of governmentand political institutions,international relations, publicpolicy, political ideas andideologies, all of which are taughtat Queen Mary in a variety ofnational and regional contexts.You are actively encouraged todevelop a critical understanding of the interplay between theoryand practice.

With close proximity to, andconnections with, Britain’snational political institutions and the headquarters of thecountry’s major political parties,organisations and think tanks,studying at Queen Mary providesan excellent entry into the world ofpolitics and international relations.

We pride ourselves on our friendlyand informal approach, as well asthe quality of our teaching. In themost recent National StudentSatisfaction survey (NSS 2010) 98 per cent of students rated staffas “good at explaining things,”and 88 per cent were satisfiedwith the quality of the courseoverall.

As a School, we have a strongcommitment to research, and we aim to integrate our researchinterests with our teaching.

This means that students become familiar with the latestdevelopments, at times evenlearning from academics who are contributing to the body ofknowledge in this field. In theGovernment’s latest ResearchAssessment Exercise (RAE 2008),the quality of our research placedus in the top 20 Politics and International Relationsdepartments in the UK.

Small groupteaching andassessmentAs well as lectures, you willbenefit from small group teachingwith a good staff / student ratio.This means that you are able toask questions in a supportiveenvironment, and developconfidence in voicing youropinions and taking part in group discussions.

Assessment is usually through amix of exams, presentations andcoursework. The exact methodswill depend on the modules you take.

Modular degreestructureOur flexible modular systemmeans that you benefit fromspecialist teaching along with the freedom to shape your ownprogramme of study. In additionto the required core components,and timetable permitting, you canchoose modules that reflect yourinterests, for example, ageography or law option. Inaddition to this, we offer severaljoint honours degree programmesin conjunction with the Schools of Economics, History, Geography,Languages, Linguistics, Film and Law and BusinessManagement.

Career opportunities Queen Mary is in the top 10 in the UK for graduate startingsalaries (The Sunday Times).During your time at Queen Marywe are committed to giving youthe skills and support which willequip you for success afteruniversity. A single or jointhonours degree in politics andinternational relations will give you a broad range of skills andknowledge valued by employers:

• analytical ability – politics is all about logical thinking andmaking sense of complicatedfactors

• research skills – particularly asyou’ll complete a 12,000-worddissertation (which will also giveyou staying power)

• writing ability – essays, examsand seminar papers, plus thatdissertation, will ensure you cando far more than just stringsentences together

• presentation skills – you’ll giveseminar presentations, take part in debates and even role-playing exercises

• IT skills – as with any otheruniversity subject, you’ll word-process your work, use email tocorrespond with your tutors andsurf the web in researchingessays and so on.

We encourage students to makeuse of the opportunities Londonprovides for internships and workplacements, where these can beaccommodated alongside theirstudies.

Our graduates go into a mixture ofcareers, with some, notsurprisingly, being attracted topolitics: political parties, localgovernment, think-tanks andgovernment departments. Politicaljournalism and TV are alsoobvious choices. For those whowant to take a different path,finance and banking,management training, PR andadvertising are also popular, as isthe Law conversion course. Forexample, one recent Queen Marygraduate now works for theConservatives on the GreaterLondon Authority; another is onBBC News 24; and anotherdeveloped a specialisation in thearea of Muslim women and workwhilst working for the Cabinetoffice on employment and ethnicminorities – she has beenpublished by a high-profile think-tank and quoted widely in thepress.

The School of Politics andInternational Relations at QueenMary runs a range of Mastersprogrammes including: PublicPolicy, International Relations and

Global and Comparative Politics,which can be undertaken asstand-alone Masters or as trainingfor a doctoral degree.

Queen Mary is thethird largest college of the University ofLondon. Located onan attractive campusin east London,approximately 20minutes by tube fromthe West End. Wehave 15,000 studentsstudying in fourfaculties plus Bartsand The LondonSchool of Medicineand Dentistry. Of these, more than1,600 are followingpostgraduate coursesand undertakingresearch.

The campus is a distinguishingfeature of the College. It is apeaceful, friendly environmentonly a few metres from the bustle of Mile End Road, withlandscaped squares and a host of facilities on one site: cafés, barsand restaurants, the Students’Union, the Student Village, bank,bookshop and travel agency. The academic facilities arehoused in architecturally diversebuildings, ranging from theVictorian Queens’ Building to the modern, award winningInformatics Teaching Laboratoryand the Joseph PriestleyChemistry Building.

Our rootsThe campus is historically thehome of Queen Mary College,University of London which beganlife in the Nineteenth Century asthe People’s Palace, aphilanthropic centre for theintellectual and culturalimprovement of east Londoners.Westfield College was founded in1882 in Hampstead as a

pioneering college for the highereducation of women. In 1989Queen Mary and Westfield Collegewas formed from the merger of Queen Mary College andWestfield College.

In 1995 the College mergedagain, this time with two leadingmedical colleges, to create Bartsand The London School ofMedicine and Dentistry withinQueen Mary. The London HospitalMedical College, England’s firstmedical school, was establishedin 1785, and St Bartholomew’sHospital Medical College wasestablished in 1843.

Academic standards We take pride in the quality of ouracademic research. The 2008Research Assessment Exerciseconfirmed Queen Mary’sexcellence in a broad range offields. Overall the College wasranked eleventh in the country byThe Guardian and was declared“the biggest star” in the RAE bythe Times Higher EducationSupplement. 62 per cent ofresearch in the College wasdeemed to be “internationallyexcellent “ or “world -leading”, afigure which places us within thetop ten institutions in the country.

Teaching quality is regularlymonitored and student feedbackencouraged, with studentrepresentatives on all the majorpolicy making committees.

The University of London The federal University of Londonis a wide-ranging body made upof more than 50 institutions,which together form the largestand most diverse university inBritain. Our range of degreeprogrammes andchoice of modulesmean that you gain an excellentgrounding, that then allows forspecialisation in your second andthird years.

Single HonoursBA Politics (three years)

The BA in Politics is designed tofamiliarise you with the discipline ofpolitics, including political theory,ideas and ideologies, governmentand institutions, internationalrelations and comparative politics.As with all our degree programmes,the BA in Politics is taught within amodular framework. In the first yearyou will take three or four Politicsmodules: Introduction to Politics;Political Analysis; ComparativeGovernment and Politics; andIntroduction to InternationalRelations, which together providean excellent introduction. One othermodule may be chosen fromanother department as analternative to taking theInternational Relations module.

In the second year, you will takethe core module, Modern PoliticalThought. This reflects the School’sview that all single Honours

Politics students should beexposed to the work of the majorpolitical thinkers, whose ideashave had a significant impact onthe formation of the modernworld. This module will also helpyou develop crucial intellectualskills of analysis and criticism.

In addition, you will take onemodule from a limited number ofoptions, along with two furthermodules selected from a widerrange of options. Second yearoptions include British Politics;Parties, Elections andGovernment; InternationalRelations; Global Governance;Politics of the Developing World;and International Security.

In the final year, you willundertake an extended piece ofresearch for the Politics ResearchProject, with support from theSchool and your adviser. Otherthan this, you are free to designyour own programme of study. Weoffer an extensive range of finalyear modules which mirror theresearch specialisms of our staff.

BA InternationalRelations(three years)

International Relations (IR) atQueen Mary covers the broadthemes and theories associatedwith the study of IR, but also drawson the School’s distinctive expertisein a number of areas. You willcover the historical study ofInternational Relations, through theCold War, and into the current eraof globalisation and the ‘war on

terror’. You will also examinetheories of International Relations,applying them and reflecting ontheir relevance through the use ofboth historical and contemporaryexamples. In addition, you havethe opportunity to specialise inparticular fields with modules such as: International Security;International Politics and theDeveloping World; GlobalGovernance; The ComparativePolitics of the Middle East; USForeign Policy; EuropeanIntegration; and The GlobalisationDebate. You will be able to pursueyour own distinctive area of interestin your final year dissertation.

BA Politics with BusinessManagement (three years)

This is a major / minor degreeprogramme that links thecomplementary subjects ofPolitics and BusinessManagement. You will follow thesingle honours Politicsprogramme, with additionalmodules in BusinessManagement. This gives you theopportunity to pursue the morevocationally oriented study ofBusiness Management, within thegeneral intellectual frameworkprovided by the Politics modules.

Joint HonoursJoint Honours degrees combinethe study of Politics andInternational Relations withanother arts or social sciencesubject, or with Law. Generally,

students on these programmesdivide their time more or lessequally between the two coresubjects in their first year, andmay then choose to continue tostudy both disciplines in equalproportions, or to specialise in oneor the other.

In the case of our four-year jointhonours degrees combining politicswith a language, a minimumnumber of modules must be takenfrom the relevant languagedepartment. BA History and Politics(three years)

This degree reflects the closelinks between the two disciplinesand is taught jointly by the School’of Politics and History. It providesan opportunity to understand themodern world by studying theevolution of political ideas andinstitutions side by side with thehistorical development of themajor powers.

BSc Economics and Politics (three years)

Politics and economics are closelyrelated disciplines. In the first yearyou will take four politics, and foureconomics modules. You canchoose from core modules in

macroeconomics, microeconomicsand the quantitative techniquesused in economic investigationtaught in the School of Economicsand Finance, combined withmodules in introductory politics,comparative government andpolitics, and international relations,taught by the School of Politicsand International Relations. Inyour second and third years youcan continue to split your studiesin equal proportions, or you canspecialise more completelyaccording to how your interestsdevelop.

BA Law and Politics (three years)

This joint honours degree, the firstof its kind in the University ofLondon, offers you the opportunityto study the closely relateddisciplines of Law and Politics sideby side in a three-year programme.In the first year, you takeconstitutional law and the law ofcontract, together with introductionto politics and a full option withinthe School of Politics andInternational Relations. Theprogramme is designed so that youcould, by choosing the appropriatelaw options, obtain the usualexemptions from legal professionalexaminations, or alternatively youcould focus on subjects in theSchool of Politics and InternationalRelations. The degree is aimed atthose who wish to pursue a careerin which knowledge of both thelegal and governmental systems isof major importance, and shouldappeal especially to those wishing tostudy public policy in its legalcontext.

What did you gain from yourtime at Queen Mary?I think education is more thanjust attending lectures andreading books. As well asthese, Queen Mary gave methe opportunity to engage withlike-minded students throughclubs and societies, organisedoutings and events, and avibrant social atmosphere.

What are your career plans in thenext five years?I intend to expand myexperience and skills injournalism, begin furtheruniversity education, and travelmore widely in the next fiveyears.

BA Geography and Politics (three years)

This degree programme is for youif you are interested in currentaffairs as well as the dynamicenvironmental, social and culturalsystems and processes in theworld around us. It explores thespatial and social aspects ofgovernment activity, and willextend your knowledge of politicaltheory and practice by relatingpolitics to its geographical context.The BA Geography and Politicsentails an exploration of thegeographical bases of politicsalongside the study of politicaltheory and practice. Withingeography, your choices willusually fall within humangeography with modules on cities,public policy, and Third Worlddevelopment.

BA Language and Politics(four years)

The study of a language withpolitics offers the exciting prospectof a four-year degree programmethat combines two contrasting, butoften complementary, areas ofinterest. Whether you chooseFrench, German, Hispanic Studiesor Russian you will follow the coremodules designed to help youdevelop your skills in writing andspeaking that language as well ascore modules in Politics. Inaddition you will normally spend ayear abroad in a country where thelanguage is spoken. Your time will

be spent either studying or workingdepending on where you go.

• German and Politics – If youhave no previous knowledge ofGerman, you may still beadmitted if you can demonstratethe necessary language-learningaptitude. In this case, you willbe encouraged to spend yourthird year in a german speakingcountry.

• French and Politics – Priorknowledge of French is requiredfor admission to this degreeprogramme.

• Russian and Politics – Thisprogramme may be three or four years, depending onwhether you have previousknowledge of Russian, andwhether time is spent abroad. If you have no previousknowledge of Russian, you may still be admitted if you can demonstrate the necessarylanguage-learning aptitude; inthis case you would be requiredto spend an initial year studyingthe Russian language beforeproceeding to the first year of the BA.

• Hispanic Studies and Politics –You may still be admitted if youcan demonstrate the necessarylanguage-learning aptitude. Inthis case you will be encouragedto spend your third year in aspanish speaking country.

Teaching andassessment As a student at the School ofPolitics and InternationalRelations at Queen Mary you playan active part in your acquisitionof skills and knowledge. Teachingis by a mixture of formal lecturesand small group seminars. Theseminars are designed to generateinformed discussion around a settopic, and may involve studentpresentations, group exercisesand role-play, as well as opendiscussion. Most modules areassessed by a mixture of writtenwork and final examination.

The School of Politics andInternational Relations is based inthe Arts building which has arange of purpose-built lecturetheatres, seminar rooms andcomputer rooms. Extensivelearning resources can be foundin the college library, just acrossthe campus, which containscourse books and journals alongwith a wide range of electronicjournals, databases and audio-visual materials. Queen Mary

students also have access to otherUniversity of London libraries,such as Senate House and theLSE library, which may be usefulfor more in-depth research in thefinal year. Within London there area range of other researchresources for politics studentsincluding the British Library andthe Public Records Office.Student learning is enhancedthrough the use of a VirtualLearning Environment, wherestudents can access electronicmaterials and communicate witheach other.

We take pride in the close andfriendly working relationship wehave with our students. You areassigned a personal adviser whowill guide you in both academicand pastoral matters throughoutyour time at the College. We havean active Staff Student LiaisonCommittee, including electedstudent representatives, whichmeets regularly throughout theyear to bring students’ issues tothe attention of staff. The CollegeAdvice and Counselling Serviceprovides support on financial and other personal issues.

AccommodationQueen Mary is the only campusuniversity within central London,bringing together accommodation,teaching facilities and libraryprovision on a single site. It is apleasant environment, just off theMile End Road, with cafes, bars,shops, a bank and the studentunion with all its leisure facilities.These include QMotion, a newstate-of-the-art fitness centre.

Most first years have theopportunity to live on site, with high quality self-cateringaccommodation for over 2,000undergraduates. The studentvillage has a shop, café-bar,launderette and 24-hour security.If you live more than one hour’stravelling time away from QueenMary, you are likely to be givencampus accommodation. Details on how to apply foraccommodation will be sent toyou when the College sends youofficial confirmation that you havea place.

Most second and third yearstudents live in privateaccommodation close to campus,in housing that is relatively cheapcompared to other parts ofLondon. With the 2012 Olympicsapproaching, east London isseeing unprecedented levels ofinvestment in infrastructure,making this an excellent time to be living in the area.

Study abroadWe offer opportunities for studentsin their second and third years tospend either one term or one fullacademic year in a number of US and European universities. At present we have exchangeagreements with the University of California, University of Miami,University of South Florida,Muhlenberg College(Pennsylvania) and HunterCollege (New York).

We also participate in anexchange programme withEuropean universities under theSOCRATES scheme (the EuropeanUnion programme for the mobilityof students and for cooperation inhigher education).

Science Po, France At present we have one exchangeagreement with Science Po(Rennes, France). The schemewill provide you with theopportunity to spend a substantialperiod of study (a minimum ofthree months, although the usualperiod is one academic year) atSciences Po (Rennes, France). You will require a level of fluencyin French, but Science Po doesoffer a pre-sessional French foracademia course and offers somesessional courses in English. Forfurther information about this,please contact the School.

Admissions Applicants will be invited to attendone of our regular Open Days.This gives you an opportunity tosee the College campus and to meet staff and students.
