Opportunities for LLM students interested in the ICT sector togain practical experience in the growing digital community

qLegal – The CCLS Legal IncubatorIn Summer 2013 the CCLS established ‘qLegal’, which aimsto provide legal and regulatory advisory services to early-stage, start-up companies, primarily in the Information andCommunication Technologies (ICT) sector through highcalibre postgraduate law students. This will allow Queen Mary students to get involved in a rich learning and valuableprofessional development experience, as well as gaininguseful networking opportunities with potential future clients or employers.

As a ‘legal incubator’, qLegal employs a range of servicedelivery modes including single-client projects; multi-clientworkshops and clinics; and access to an online portal. Anextensive platform of strategic partners and collaboratorssignificantly enhances the qLegal proposition and includesworld-class research groups from across Queen Mary; aCCLS-led network of legal incubators from leading law schoolsin Europe and the US and close working relationships with a number of key players in the growing ‘Digital LondonCommunity’. The scheme will be open to all LLM students.

European Intellectual Property Network (EIPIN)

Unrivalled networking opportunities for IP studentsThe Queen Mary Intellectual Property Research Institute(QMIPRI) was one of the four founder members of EIPINcreated in 1999. Over the last 14 years numerous QueenMary PG law IP students have benefited enormously fromattending EIPIN Congresses held at one of the six memberinstitutions, all leading IP institutions. www.eipin.org

Leslie Lansman, USA, LLM in Intellectual Property (2012-13)

“EIPIN is one of the most unique andrewarding experiences that Queen Mary offers.

“During the conference students listento academics from across the world. It is an amazing opportunity to hear

from leading figures in the IP world in a setting geared to, and focused on, the attending students. The topics aim atdiscussing some of the most relevant, and often controversial, issues currently facing those interested in IP.

“Students are encouraged to network and continue thediscussion once the lectures end through planned dinner and social events. This is what makes EIPIN truly remarkable.Often in such conferences, once the conference endsparticipants rarely hear from each other again. Since EIPIN is held twice, attendees truly have the opportunity to cementand build upon existing relationships. It is almost like takinganother LLM program. And, perhaps most importantly, EIPINis tremendous fun.”

Luxmi Raj, UK, MSc in Management of IntellectualProperty (2012-2013)

“As an MSc student I had theunparalleled opportunity to apply andparticipate in the EIPIN. Each yearstudents from the different institutionsare mixed up for the purpose ofcollaboratively researching and writing a

paper on an IP topic. In addition, students travel and attendlectures given by noted academics and practitioners, on IPissues which are topical but are generally not discussed in theclassroom, thereby introducing the students to more nuancedareas in IP.”

Internship opportunity at the United Nations Conference forTrade and Development (ICT Analysis section), Switzerland

Ngozi Onodugo, Nigeria (LLB, (Queen Mary), General LLM 2012-13)was selected to do a 3-month (June-August) internship with the UnitedNations Conference for Trade andDevelopment (ICT Analysis section) in Switzerland. She will be involved in projects and tasks related to E-commerce and Law Reform

Programmes for developing countries.

“I am working with the United Nations Conference on Tradeand Development (UNCTAD); the ICT Analysis section ontheir e-Commerce and Law Reform Programme. TheProgramme helps developing countries understand theimportance of ICT and the need for the establishment ofeffective legal frameworks on e-Commerce and ICT throughcapacity building activities.

“My role is to do research on the existing legal frameworks of developing countries which have approached UNCTAD for assistance and assist with the capacity building activities.

“Doing the LLM definitely helped with the internships –I probably would not have known about the internship if Iwasn't on the programme. In addition, my dissertation (Title:Digital Convergence and Mobile Payments: A Critical Analysisof Mobile Payments Regulation in Nigeria), is in an area thatis related to the work I am doing with UNCTAD. I came aboutthe topic as a result of a comment made by my E-Commercelecturer, Professor Chris Reed about mobile paymentsservices in Nigeria which I did not realise existed before this.I therefore have some knowledge now of developments in thearea of mobile commerce and this is assisting me in myresearch assignments here.”

Ayah El Said, Fulbright Scholar, Egypt, LLM in Law and Economics BursaryWinner 2012-13

“I am an Egyptian economist, with a BA in Economics from the AmericanUniversity in Cairo, where I was the topstudent in the major, and an MA inEconomics from New York University

(NYU) where I was a Fulbright Scholar. I spent the last fewyears after my time at NYU working as an emerging marketseconomist in two economic and financial consultancies inNew York and London (Roubini Global Economics and ArabiaMonitor), having previously worked at the World Bank and theCentral Bank of Egypt. My research areas of interest includeinternational finance, monetary economics and financialdevelopment, and during my time at NYU, I was exposed tothe literature on the role of institutions, and how countrieswith better, and more advanced, legal systems tended to havebetter financial systems, which fostered economic growth. This paved the way for my interest in law and economics.

“As a professional economist, I was exposed to the impact of the global financial crisis on emerging markets, and theimportant role played by legal and regulatory institutions inmitigating the worst of the crisis, and as an Egyptianwitnessing her own country's uprising, I had a first-handexperience with the importance of legal and regulatoryenvironment in terms of how it affects investor sentiment, and how the lack of it could prove to have dire effects on any economy. Law and Economics is a field that has beengradually growing but I could not find one such program thatwould fit my background. I came across Queen Mary's newLLM in Law and Economics program at a time when I wantedto return to graduate school, and specialise in law andeconomics, and this program seems to be the perfectstepping stone to lead me to the area that I would like tospecialize in. As an economist with no legal background, Iwas taken to the very basics of different legal subjects, layingthe necessary foundations that would equip me to combineboth law and economics in a growing area where is highdemand for such calibre and not enough supply. My interest

in international finance made Queen Mary an even moreappealing option for me given its strong reputation in financeand banking law, and my only regret is that there is notenough hours in the day that would make me audit – orsimply read – material from other classes since the variety ofcourses offered, that are of interest to me, is unprecedented. It has truly been a wonderful experience, and the facultymembers' dedication and hard work put in this program adds much more to it all.”

Marcel Campbell, UKCurrent Student – Distance Learning LLMin Computer and Communications Law Director, Information Security, ThomsonReuters Corporation, New York

“My background is as a technologist.Over the last decade a myriad ofregulations that pertain to the use of

information have become central to designing an effectivesolution. The course helped me better understand the rules, their intent and to apply them in practise. I particularlyenjoyed the Privacy and Data Protection, Media Law andInternet Content Regulations modules, which were topical at the time and spurred many interesting debates with tutorsand other students. Technology is used very effectively todeliver content and enable collaboration on the course. Istrongly recommend this course for both Technologists andLegal practitioners.”

other candidates vying for the same job. The MSc Law &Finance is unique in that it offered those with a lawbackground, like me, to get a foothold in economics andfinance subjects. It is one of the very few institutions in theUK to offer this degree, which I felt would be extremelyadvantageous for my future job prospects. Also, it was clearthat the School are composed of giants in their field – I wouldbe learning from the best!

“The teachers have been excellent at fostering a friendly and open learning atmosphere. You are encouraged to askquestions, both in and out of the lecture theatre – and help isalways at hand. This open policy ensures the material is trulyengaging and rewarding. Also, because the course is cross-disciplinary, almost everyone on the course, whether they arefrom an economics, law or professional background, ischallenged to learn something new. The course directors takegreat pains to invite extremely illustrious and high-profilespeakers to deliver module lectures – this gives you a realinsight into the reality of working in industry.”

Olivier C Herbreteau, France, Senior Patent Counsel, SANOFI LLM in Intellectual Property Law 2013-2015, Paris Programme, Part-time

“In 2011, I left private practice andswitched for an in-house position in aglobal and diversified healthcare leader, where I am responsible for evaluating

and negotiating IP rights involved in business transactions(merger, acquisition, licensing, collaboration). My newposition immersed me in an international environment, wherelegal matters are often negotiated under common law. I thusfelt the need to strengthen my educational background inInternational Commercial Law and Intellectual Property Law.My employer fully encouraged me in this direction andproposed to sponsor an LLM at Queen Mary.

“My choice naturally went to the LLM in Intellectual PropertyLaw, which is internationally recognized for its Professors andthe variety and the quality of its teachings. In addition, havingthe opportunity to take my LLM as a part-time student inParis, and to split my modules over two academic yearsinstead of one, allows me to combine a high quality trainingresponding to my expectations while continuing to performmy professional duties normally.

“Today, I can genuinely say that the LLM in IntellectualProperty Law perfectly fits my academic expectations. Inaddition, it brings a new perspective to my daily practice, which is beneficial both personally and professionally. I would recommend it to any IP law practitioner!”

Nina Chohan, CanadaLLM in Medical Law 2012-13

“Prior to embarking in my career in lawI had completed a Bachelors of Sciencein Canada and was working as aRegistered Nurse. Nursing was anextremely rewarding profession, however, I always felt as though there

was more that I could do to give back to society and make a positive contribution.

“Thus, I decided to pursue my LLB (Hons.) from theUniversity of Birmingham. Upon completing my LLB my thirst for knowledge in the area of medical law had onlygrown. My desire to gain a more comprehensive and in depth understanding of medical law and the issues arising in healthcare prompted me to further my education andknowledge base by enrolling in Queen Mary’s LLM MedicalLaw programme.

“The experience at Queen Mary has been more rewardingthan what I could have imagined. The options of modulesavailable for students to choose from are vast and taught byexperienced lecturers. The teaching staff are unbelievablysupportive and readily available to assist students when andwherever they can. My classmates all had various educationalbackgrounds, making class discussions engaging andstimulating.

“After enjoying such a rewarding LLM experience at QueenMary I now plan on staying with the university to pursue aPhD in Medical Law.

“I am grateful beyond words for my experience at QueenMary and would wholeheartedly recommend the LLM MedicalLaw programme to aspiring medical law students.”
