With the sunny spring weather upon us, it is important for students to stay focused on being successful in all their classes and studies. Principal’s Message con’t:

For next school year we have made a small adjustment to the end of the school day. To meet the instructional time requirements from the Ministry of Education the school day will begin with a warning bell at 8:25 with classes starting at 8:30 and school ending at 2:42. Further-more, QE will continue with formal collaboration time once a month called

“Royal Wednesday”. Formal collaboration is defined as educators meeting to examine their practice and explore ways to improve student experience. Collaboration occurs between 2 or more educators who have a common interest and/or question about their practice they wish to explore and because of this interest they are driven to action and are curious about the effects of their efforts. On “Royal Wednesday” school will start one hour later to provide educators with the opportunity to collaborate. If you have any questions, concerns and/or feedback please feel free to contact me at the school.

For our graduating class of 2017 the next few weeks will have special significance as their last year of High School comes to a close. The Commencement Ceremony was held at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium on Monday, May 29 where we recognized the graduates for all their accomplishments and contributions to our school and the community. The Dinner Dance celebration for Grads will be held Friday, June 23 at Newlands in Langley followed by the Dry Grad Boat Cruise. Many staff, students, and parents have devoted countless hours of work to make these events memorable for our Grads and their families. Thank you to all these volunteers.

For our parents of the graduating class of 2018, the company “S-Trip” is again promoting their services as a school/student Spring Break agent and recruiting students to distribute and promote the company on school property. The brochure and method of distribution promotes the impression the offered trip is sanctioned by the school and District. This trip is not organized or sanctioned by the school and therefore is not subject to school and District safety clearances, processes, supervision, and overview. I would like to make it clear to parents that the S-Trip is in no way associated with, nor endorsed, by our school or District and it is entirely a parent decision to allow their child to participate. We are also trying to help our Grad Class parents of 2018 get a head start on preparing for next year’s Dry Grad. Interested parents are invited to attend an information session on Monday, June 12 at 7:00 pm in the school library put on by this year’s Dry Grad parents.

We hope to see you there!

Finally, I want to encourage students to complete all assignments, to ask for help when needed, and for parents to contact teachers if they have any questions or concerns as classes come to an end at the end of the month. Have a great finish to the school year!

Artist Statement

I have had an interest in art since I was a

young child. I got into fine arts when I was

in elementary school. Although I was forced

to do projects, I enjoyed doing them. Now I

am in high school exploring sculpting for

my very first time. I am working on a

sculpture based off of a painting. I find

sculpting is a way to relax, and focus my

mind on the project rather than on other

problems.

Eyrrjon D. Grade 11

Discipline: Dance

Artist Statement

I’ve been dancing for as long as I can re-

member but it wasn’t serious. I would

just dance around the house when I

heard music playing or I would watch

dance videos. I joined the dance team in

second semester of grade 9 because

some of my school friends forced me to.

A few friends that had experience with

dance influenced me and they helped me

get better at it. My favourite part of

dancing is being able to fully express my

feelings with movements. Right now, I am

working on being a better dancer and

expanding my knowledge about it

because I would like to join a studio to

compete outside Canada.

QE Ultimate teams had a blast this year. The SR team did well during the season but due to injuries did not accomplish their goals in Surreys or Fraser valleys. The JR team was around the middle of the pack for the season but excelled in Surrey’s almost making the top 4. Good luck to those who are trying out for the summer provincial teams Vertigo and Vortex. Congrats to all and see you next season!

The QE Track & Field Team participated at the Surrey Championships last week, com-peting against 25 other Surrey high schools. We managed a very respectable 7th place finish overall. Our senior girls’ track team placed a strong 3rd, and the Grade 9 girls team also tied for 3rd place. Another strong group was our gr 9 boys’ team, finishing 5th. Congratulations to Jasneet N. for winning her 3 events, the 100m, 200m and 400m. Charn N. won the Grade 8 boys shot put and discus events, and Pranay S. won the Grade 9 boys long jump. May 15-18 we have about 20 athletes who qualified for the Fraser Valleys Track and Field Championships in Coquitlam.

The science department ran a chicken egg incubation project during May. This project

was done by Grade 9 students using the new curriculum to address the “big idea” that

cells are derived from cells. Many of the curricular competencies were addressed during

this project with an emphasis being placed on students effectively communicating

scientific ideas to the broader

Queen Elizabeth community.

Students displayed the daily developmental changes that were occurring in the eggs and

answered questions from a “question box” that other Queen Elizabeth students had asked.

The QE Ball Hockey team completed its 2017 season this past weekend at the BC Provincial Championships in North Surrey. This is a group of players who demonstrated a strong commitment to team play and was exceptionally disciplined overall. During the regular season in the Surrey High School Ball Hockey League, the QE Royals qualified for the playoffs and lost to 1st place Lord Tweedsmuir 5-4 in the playoff game. In the BC Provincials, QE had victories over LA Matheson and Burnaby South, and qualified for the top 8 playoff round for the first time in Royal history, before losing a thrilling game vs eventual champion, Delta Pacers 4-3 in OT, a game in which QE came back from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits before losing in the overtime period. Strong team defence, consistent goaltending, and timely scoring from a balanced attack were all trademarks of the Royals team this season. Congratulations to all players for a great season!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE to Grad Parents/Guardians

Re: 2018 Grad “S-Trips”

The company "S-Trip" is again promoting its services as a Queen Elizabeth grad trip “agent”, and recruiting students to distribute and promote the

company's brochures on or near school property.

S-Trips are NOT APPROVED by Queen Elizabeth Secondary or the Surrey School District. However, S-Trip’s brochure -- and method of distribution --

promotes the impression that the offered interior skiing, Mexico and/or Cuba “grad” trips are sanctioned by the school and the district. By using students

to distribute the information, particularly on school property, parents could incorrectly assume this trip is organized by the school and therefore subject

to school and district safety clearances, processes, supervision, overview, etc.

Please Note: There is no school or district-involved safety measures for these trips. Please be aware that Queen Elizabeth Secondary and the Surrey

School District in no way approve of this distribution or trip offer. In fact, the company is in violation of District policies regarding the distribution of

promotional materials in our schools.

These particular “S-Trips” do not have school staff supervision and they are not approved by Queen Elizabeth Secondary or the Surrey School District.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Principal or any of the Vice-Principals if you have any questions about a proposed school or grad trip.

Parent volunteering is very important in order for Dry Grad Events to continue,

please contact Lisa at 604-761-1074 or by email at lisaand [email protected] if you can volunteer

some time. It is greatly appreciated.

The QE Dry Grad event will once again be a fabulous boat cruise. This year’s cruise will take place aboard the beautiful

Queen of Diamonds, sailing out of False Creek into the Inner Harbour and out past the West Vancouver shoreline.

On June 24th, immediately following the Dinner/Dance at Newlands, grads will be shuttled by bus to the dock at 750

Pacific Boulevard where they will board the boat for a four hour cruise. While on board, students will enjoy dancing, a

photo booth and much more. There will also be a mock casino featuring Texas Hold’em Poker and Blackjack. Each

student will be given “play money” to use. Grads will be served food, soft drinks and hot chocolate. Safe School Liaison

staff will act as chaperones as well as boat security.

At 5:00 am, the boat will return to the harbor and students and chaperones will be boarded onto the buses and driven

to QE school parking lot, where their parents will pick them up (buses are expected to arrive at the school at

approximately 6:00 am). PLEASE NOTE: school premises will not be open for students!

School rules will apply on the boat cruise.

Students must attend the Dinner/Dance if they wish to go on the boat cruise.

If bringing a guest, students must show their approval form before they purchase a

guest ticket.

No smoking, alcohol or drugs allowed. Students will be searched and any alcohol or

drugs found will be confiscated and the student will be refused entrance to the boat.

Backpacks or large bags will not be allowed on the buses. A small bag for a change of shoes or sweater will be

permitted and will be subject to a search.

If students wish to change out of their formal wear before the cruise, they must do so at Newlands, and a parent

must come to pick up their clothes prior to the buses leaving, as they cannot be left on the bus or taken on the boat

— no exceptions. We ask that all clothes to be changed into be brought with the students at the beginning of the

night.
