OK

CONGRATULATIONS…… To Our DECA Students (Submitted by Chad Froeschle)

If students are interested in learning about business, marketing, management, finance and or entrepreneurship, DECA is the organization for them. DECA is a co-curricular, student-centered business organization specifically designed to provide activities that will motivate students to learn marketing competencies that will prepare them to become skilled, employable workers in marketing, management, and entrepreneurship, and marketing related careers. Students have the opportunity to use their knowledge in business and compete at local, state, and even the national level. Students involved in DECA have the opportunity to showcase their

business knowledge through DECA’s competitive events. There are 4 levels of competition for DECA (local, regional, state, and international). The competition consists of two business situational role-plays, a written economics test, and business written test. On January 31st, Elk Grove DECA brought 16 students to the North-Suburban DECA competition and had 8 of 16 competitors place in the top 10 of their events. Notable mentions are Maggie Cronin and Jose Romero who placed in the top 4 of their events, Brandi Middendorp placed 2nd in her event, and Jakub Hojsan and Joey Weber placed 1st in their events. On February 22nd through 24th, Brandi Middendorp, Jakub Hojsan, Joey Weber, Jose Romero, and Maggie Cronin represented Elk Grove High School at the state DECA competition in Rosemont. Over 1,300 students competed at the state DECA competition in Rosemont, Illinois. Jakub Hojsan, Brandi Middendorp, and Joey Weber placed in the top ten of their events at state. Brandi Middendorp and Joey Weber qualified for the national DECA competition in Atlanta, Georgia. Joey Weber placed 2nd at state and this is the second consecutive year Joey Weber has qualified for the national DECA competition! Joey and Brandi will represent Illinois at the National DECA conference beginning April 21st.

How do we know? Students told us in the 2016 Illinois Youth Survey (IYS)! Studies show that communication and relationship-building during

family dinners greatly reduces the risk of teen substance use.

Students will take the IYS survey again on March 16.

Kenneth Young Center is working with EGHS and other community organizations

to address the opioid crisis.

One of the strategies is educating community members on safe usage, storage, and disposal of

prescription pain medication through our Guard and Discard posters campaign. Posters will be

put up in several locations around Elk Grove Township — keep an eye out for them! And if you’re

looking for more resources, scan our QR code or visit our website at cpydcoalition.org.

63% of EGHS sophomores report eating dinner with their parent(s) or guardian(s) at least 4 or more days out of the week.
