Quantum esXpress™ backup software combined with a Quantum DXi®-Series data deduplication system provides a comprehensive and scalable, yet easy to use data protection solution for VMware® environments. This revolutionary data protection solution utilizes the virtual environment itself to back up more data in less time. Quantum esXpress backup software dynamically creates high-availability virtual appliances for protecting VMware virtual infrastructures and data. esXpress employs “virtual backup appliances” (VBAs)—small virtual machines—to perform autonomous, fault-tolerant backup and restoration of the virtual environment directly to a DXi-Series system without the use of a proxy server or software, with minimal impact to VM server, console or network performance. Virtual Backup for Virtual IT InfrastructureesXpress radically alters the notion of how to protect data in virtual infrastructures in one simple way: using the virtual infrastructure to backup itself. esXpress uses VBAs—small virtual machines—that can be automatically deployed on an ESX server to autonomously conduct hot, full or Delta backups of all the virtual machines (VM).

esXpress VBAs operate outside of the VMware ESX console, leveraging a virtual appliance architecture and esXpress innovative disk throttling so backups can be run during business hours with little to no impact to VM performance on the ESX server. And esXpress backs up virtual disks at the “block-level” delivering incremental backup that can be sent directly to one or more DXi-Series storage targets simultaneously for deduplication and intelligent offsite replication.

Quantum’s DXi-Series backup appliances are the perfect backup repository for this VMware data. VM images are ideally suited to deduplication and the resulting storage savings can exceed 95%. DXi replication enables a simple disaster recovery solution by providing a complete offsite replica of the VMware environment. This can be used to rebuild a Virtual Machine or an entire VMware ESX infrastructure inventory. esXpress VM replication adds further capability by automating the process of restoring a VM replica any time a change is made to the backup copy of the original.
