• School Direct Fee Paying leading to QTS with PGCE
• School Direct allows you to dictate the area you would like to train in
• A one year course which leads to the conventional PGCE qualification
• Part time arrangement can be made but are not common
• Tuition fees of £9000 are payable, with eligibility for the student loan
• Placement in Catalyst Affiliated Schools – at least two placements
• Tuition through the University of Hertfordshire
• Student loans to cover fees and maintenance are available through the student
loans company

• Certain subjects are in greater demand and are incentivised through bursaries
• Different classes of degree also attract different incentives
• Applicants with third class degrees are commonly unsuccessful
• Applicants need to demonstrate they have appropriate subject expertise –
training providers make individual judgements on this
• Commitment to education through work experience or voluntary involvement is
valued
• 2014-2015 bursaries are not yet defined by with probably follow those for
2013-2014.

• School Direct Salaried leading to QTS
• This route results in a different QTS (qualified teacher status) certificate
• A one year course – on the job training
• Candidates are employed and trained by the school
• School will need to have an opening to fill
• Some subjects attract funding into the school are application onto this my be
easier
• Similar subjects are incentivised – Chemistry, Physics, Maths, MFL, Primary

• School Direct Salaried leading to QTS
• Income is based on the unqualified scale, which is currently £17,025 per annum
in the London Fringe area
• Fees for the course are payable, but your employer may chose to pay these for
you (check as they are around £5000)
• You are expected to take up a full teaching role during the course of the year
• Typical might be a half timetable until Christmas, two thirds in the spring and
full in the summer term.
• Applicants need to understand that this route presents schools with more
practical challenges than the “SD Fee-paying route”.

Colleges Application System)
• The exceptions are “teach first”, “troops into teaching” and “over-seas trained”
schemes
• Where ever you want to apply you will need to go through them
• This is a different process to last year
• Beware of out of date information, the new systems are being implemented at
the last minute

• You need a degree (only BEd route is possible without a degree)
• Non UK qualifications can be valid – course providers will check them
• You should be able to demonstrate subject expertise

• Two referees are required – they will need to supply reference on line
• You will need to compose a personal statement

• You can apply through until October 2014
• You can select three places to apply
• You can apply for different training routes as part of your three
• You could be offered more than one place, but you would need then to make a
selection and drop any other offers
• Course can fill and close to further applications

• Places you apply to have forty working days to decide
• Application round 2 opens on 1st January
• If your three application round 1 choices are not successful you can keep trying
in round 2
• In round 2 you apply to one at a time, with each place having up to forty days to
reach their decision
• If you apply for School Direct Salaried, do communicate with the school in
which you would like to be placed. They will need to employ you.
• You could waste a UCAS application if you don’t come to an informal
agreement first.
• For School Direct Fee-Paying communication is not necessary and could cause
confusion.

conversion courses
• Once you have an offer you can apply for student finance
• You can also book your skill tests
• Numeracy, literacy and ICT skills tests are taken in driving theory test venues
• You must pass them, but you can have up to three tries (the first one is free)
