When Marnie Was There Studio Ghibli season

Welcome the QUAD brochure for July – September 2016There has been an exciting recent development at QUAD that you might not have seen yet, the refurbishment of the Digital Studio on the 1st floor, giving us a more adaptable and dynamic space. As well as a refresh and adding the latest technology, an extension of the studio now allows us to cater for larger groups, for example education sessions for young people, and we can offer more courses and learning experiences around creative digital media such as film-making, animation, photography and coding. The flexibility of the space also means we can use the studio for corporate events too so please get in touch if you need use of an inspiring space right in the heart of the city.

Also I am delighted to announce that QUAD has successfully won £83,480 from BBC Children in Need to fund Q club for the next three years. Q club provides young people from the autistic spectrum, or with communication difficulties, behaviour problems, special educational needs and disabilities the opportunity to participate in creative activities, such as filming, coding and photography and is one of our many Arts4Health initiatives.

We are not advertising screening dates in this brochure for most of our films. Weekly screening times and details of new films going on sale are announced every Tuesday. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Screening from 1st July UK 2016 Dir: Mandie Fletcher

Eddy and Patsy are still living the high life and oozing glitz and glamour – shopping, drinking and clubbing around London’s trendiest hot spots. When they are blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they find themselves at the centre of a media firestorm. They flee to the glamourous French Riviera where they hatch a plan to make their move permanent and live the high life forever! Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley return alongside Saffy (Julia Sawalha), Bubble (Jane Horrocks), Mother (June Whitfield) plus a host of celebrity faces including Lily Cole, Rebel Wilson, Dawn French and Kate Moss.

Elvis & Nixon USA 2016 86 mins Dir: Liza Johnson

This comedy-drama focuses on a strange meeting between the King Of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley (Michael Shannon) and the President of the United States Richard Nixon (Kevin Spacey) in December 1970. Based on this bizarre true story, the film is a humourous take on what could have happened behind the closed doors of the White House on that December morning.

Alone In Berlin UK/France/Germany 2016 Dir: Vincent Perez

Based on the best-selling novel by Hans Fallada, actor Vincent Perez steps behind the camera for the first time since 2007 to direct Daniel Bruhl, Emma Thompson and Brendan Gleeson in this gripping WWII drama. When a working class couple receive the news that their only son has been killed they decide to resist Hitler and the Nazis. They start writing postcards urging people to stand up against the regime. As the postcards spread throughout Berlin, Gestapo inspector Escherich (Bruhl) is charged with finding their source.

This documentary follows the tale of JT LeRoy, the author of ‘The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things’ - a man who doesn’t exist. The film takes us down the fascinating rabbit hole of how Laura Albert, like a Cyrano De Bergerac on steroids, breathed not only words but life into her avatar for a decade. Albert’s epic and entertaining account plunges us into a glittery world of rock shows, fashion events, and the Cannes red carpet where LeRoy becomes a mysterious sensation. As she recounts this astonishing odyssey, Albert reveals the intricate web spun by irrepressible creative forces within her.

Feel Good Film Club Bayou Maharajah Friday 8th – Thursday 14th July (excluding Mon 11th and Tues 12th July) USA 2013 90 mins Dir: Lily Keber

This roller coaster portrait traces piano legend James Booker’s life from his early years as a chart topping prodigy, to his star-studded years touring and playing as a sideman, through his outrageous solo career. Featuring interviews with Harry Connick Jr., Dr John, Irma Thomas and Allen Toussaint, together with a generous helping of archival footage, the film brings to life the unforgettable story of this amazing musician.

The screening on Friday 8th July at 8.30pm is a Feel Good Film Club screening and will be introduced by FGFC host Devon Daley.

Bridget Jones’ Baby UK/USA 2016 Dir: Sharon Maguire

She’s back! After breaking up with Mark Darcy, Bridget Jones’s ‘happily ever after’ hasn’t gone quite according to plan. Now in her forties and single again, she decides to focus on her career, surrounding herself with friends old and new. She meets dashing American Jack Qwant who is everything that Darcy is not. When she finds herself pregnant, everything should be happy except that she’s only 50% sure who the father is. Renee Zellweger returns as Bridget alongside Colin Firth’s Darcy with Patrick Dempsey playing Jack.

The BFG Screening from 22nd July USA/UK 2016 Dir: Steven Spielberg

A girl named Sophie is kidnapped from her orphanage by the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) and is taken into the world of a kind-hearted soul who is considered an outcast because he refuses to eat little boys and girls. Steven Spielberg tackles one of the classic tales from Roald Dahl’s collection. Mark Rylance re-teams with Spielberg after the Oscar Winning success of Bridge Of Spies in the eponymous role of the BFG. Fun for kids of all ages!

The Commune SSweden 2016 112 mins Dir: Thomas Vinterberg

The new film from Thomas Vinterberg (Festen) is a change of pace from last year’s sumptuous Far From The Madding Crowd remake. The Commune is the story of Erik and Anna, an academic couple who set up a Danish commune in bohemian 1970s Copenhagen. What follows is a compelling clash between their personal desires and the dreams of communal solidarity; as their ideal of tolerant socialist living is eclipsed by an earth-shattering love affair, putting their relationship, their community and the commune to its greatest test.

Free State Of Jones USA 2016 Dir: Gary Ross

Set during the US Civil War, this tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight (Matthew McConaughey), and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi, to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State Of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. With Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) and Keri Russell (Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes).

Queen Of Earth USA 2015 90 mins Dir: Alex Ross Perry

Catherine (Elisabeth Moss) has entered a particularly dark period in her life; her father has died and her boyfriend James has left her. Looking to recuperate, she heads out to her best friend Virginia’s (Katherine Waterson) lake house to relax. But she struggles as memories of times with James return to haunt her. Meanwhile her friend is starting an affair with a local man Rich (Patrick Fugit) and the cracks in the women’s relationship start to appear. A bracing, eerie look at the deep bonds of friendship and the horrific effect of such bonds being frayed.

Remainder SUK/Germany 2015 103 mins Dir: Omer Fast

The debut narrative feature from Israeli video artist Omer Fast, is a stylish thriller adapted from English novelist Tom McCarthy’s cult bestseller. Set in London, where an accident causes an unnamed young man (Tom Sturridge), to lose his memory and sense of self. In recovery, he’s visited by sensations of extreme déjà vu and after he is given a large financial settlement, starts trying to reconstruct his past via a few fragments of memory. But neither he can’t predict how far he will go. Cleverly crafted to mirror its protagonist’s mental state, this is an often surreal, darkly humourous thriller.

The Neon Demon USA 2016 110 mins Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn

Making its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in competition, The Neon Demon is the latest film from Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives). It is a dissection of fame, celebrity and art starring Elle Fanning. Aspiring model Jesse (Fanning) moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are seized upon by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will go to extreme lengths to get what she has. With Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Keanu Reeves.

Men & Chicken SDenmark 2015 104 mins Dir: Anders Thomas Jensen

A riotous, bawdy and transgressive black comedy, Men & Chicken stars Mads Mikkelson in surely one of his least suave roles as troubled loner Elias, brother to Gabriel, a depressed academic. Discovering their father isn’t really their father, they go in search of their biological parent, travelling to the remote island of Ork to do so. It is a ‘unique’ place with a whole manner of politically incorrect goings-on but behind the gleefully twisted happenings, the question of where we come from and what makes us human are addressed in this very funny and provocative comedy.

Ma Ma SSpain 2015 111 mins Dir: Julio Medem

Penelope Cruz stars as Magda, an unemployed divorcee diagnosed with breast cancer. She tries to get on with her life, starting a new relationship, while continuing to raise her son. As the trio start to form a new family, the cancer rears its head once again. Cruz is outstanding in this film showing the struggles of being an unemployed single parent while trying to cope with this new health news. Julio Medem steps behind the camera (Sex and Lucia, The Red Squirrel) for his first full length feature film since 2010’s Room In Rome.

Poor Cow UK 1967 101 mins Dir: Ken Loach

Ken Loach’s first feature film and a landmark in British social realist film-making returns to cinemas in a new digital restoration. A snapshot of ‘60s London stars Carol White (Up The Junction) as young mother Joy. Beautiful, free-spirited and resilient, Joy is nevertheless struggling to cope while her brutal, uncaring husband is in jail. Clutching at any slight chance of happiness, she falls for his associate, Dave (Terence Stamp) but with heart breaking results. Full of ‘60s colour and music, it’s also stylistically innovative, with an improvised spontaneity.

Versus: The Life And Films OF Ken Loach UK 2016 93 mins Dir: Louise Osmond

Versus is a funny, provocative and revealing account of the life and career of one of Britain’s foremost filmmaker’s, Ken Loach, as he turns eighty and looks back at over fifty years of high quality filmmaking. From his debut feature Poor Cow (1967) to I, Daniel Blake (2016), Loach has been at the forefront of insightful filmmaking about the world, people and the human experience.

Notes On Blindness UK 2016 90 mins Dir: Pete Middleton & James Spinney

A provoking documentary exploring the loss of sight, brilliantly framed within the personal story of theologian and writer John Hull. As Hull began to lose his sight, he made a series of audio recordings of his experience, an intimate and acutely insightful account described by Oliver Sacks as “extraordinary, precise, deep and beautiful… It is to my mind a masterpiece.” Melding classic documentary elements with cinematic re-enactments, the film uses a naturalistic tone and immersive imagery to bring this introspection to life.

No Home Movie SFrance 2015 115 mins Dir: Chantal Akerman

Chantal Akerman turned to her mother for her final film subject, an old woman of Polish origin who lives in her apartment in Brussels. Focusing on conversations between herself and her mother, a Holocaust survivor lost in a maze of memories, the film switches between in person meetings and Skype conversations. An intimate film of precision and beauty, both personal and universal. The film was completed shortly before Chantal Akerman commited suicide and it is a film that leaves a lasting impression of loss both in the film and to the world of film.

Where You’re Meant To Be UK 2016 76 mins Dir: Paul Fegan

In the spring of 2014, Scottish cult-pop raconteur Aidan Moffat and award winning filmmaker Paul Fegan made plans to tour the length of Scotland to socialise with local characters, carouse into the early hours and explore the country’s music traditions as part of a folkloric pop voyage! The ensuing film is a warm-hearted and open-armed journey through Scottish music, landscape and time as they meet Shelia Stewart, 79 year old folk royalty and have their assumptions turned on their heads!

When shy artistic Anna moves to the seaside to live with her aunt and uncle, she stumbles upon an old mansion and a mysterious girl Marnie. The two girls form a unique connection that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. With each trip to the mansion Anna starts to piece together the truth about her new friend Marnie. The latest (possibly last) feature from Studio Ghibli is a sweeping gothic tale of friendship, mystery and discovery that delivers the breathtaking animation that made the studio a worldwide sign of quality.

When business tycoon Liu Xuan buys the Green Gulf with the intention of reclaiming some of the land from the sea, the technology used causes the marine life to die. The surviving merpeople send one of their own, Shan, disguised as a human, to assassinate Liu Xuan. The assassination doesn’t go to plan when Shan develops feelings for her target. Breezy slapstick comedy combines with stunning visuals to give Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle) a huge hit in this new fantasy drama that is already the sixth highest grossing film of the year!

A Better Tomorrow SFriday 19th August at 8:45pm Hong Kong 1986 95 mins Dir: John Woo

A tale of two brothers, Kit is an ambitious rookie cop on the straight and narrow, while his brother Ho is a Traid bigshot running a sophisticated counterfeiting syndicate. This is classic John Woo, from the slow motion action sequences to the themes of loyalties among brothers. This film also introduced the charismatic Chow Yun Fat to international audiences with his turn as Mark, the trench coat wearing anti-hero. With its choreographed bullet ballet sequence this film spawned what became known as the ‘Heroic Bloodshed’ genre.

Stray Cat Rock: Delinquent Girl Boss SJapan 1970 80 mins Dir: Yasuharu Hasebe

The first in a five film series, Stray Cat Rock: Delinquent Girl Boss is the tale of tall biker chick Ako (pop star Akiko Wada) who joins up with Mei (Meiko Kaji) and the Straycats all girl gang as they go up against the powerful Seiyu Group. With knife fights, motorcycle chases and a bit of rock singing, this film delivers a night of B Movie bliss.

Theatre Of Blood Friday 23rd September at 8:30pm UK 1972 104 mins Dir: Douglas Hickox

Edward Lionheart is a classic Shakespearian actor who snaps when the critics’ barbed comments about his

performances wound him. He decides to wound them back and adds murder to his repertoire, exacting revenge on the critics in the manner of Shakespeare’s more gruesome death scenes!

This screening will feature a duelling introduction by regular Fright Club host Darrell Buxton and director of 1623, Ben Spiller.

Fritz The Cat Friday 22nd July at 8:40pm USA 1972 72 mins Dir: Ralph Bakshi

Based on the underground comic by Robert Crumb, the frisky feline is brought to animated life by Ralph Bakshi who sends Fritz to New York City. There he’s chillin’ with Black Panthers, Hell’s Angels, some lady cats and indulges in some mind expanding chemical experiences. A chaotic counterculture highlight that seems like it’s from an alien world for today’s audiences!

Michael Jackson Night Moonwalker + DJ Night in the Café BarFriday 30th September at 8:00pm USA 1988 93 mins Dir: Jerry Kramer, Jim Blashfield & Colin Chilvers

Made just after the release of the 1987 BAD album, Michael Jackson was at the peak of his critical and commercial success. This fantasy tale of good-versus-evil features the iconic video to Smooth Criminal, Leave Me Alone and Speed Demon alongside some live concert footage that showcases one of the great stage performers in his prime. To be experienced on the big screen for sure!

Giant Sunday 11th September at 2:00pm USA 1956 201 mins Dir: George Stevens

Wealthy rancher Bick Benedict (Rock Hudson) and dirt-poor cowboy Jett Rink (James Dean) both woo Leslie Lynnton (Elizabeth Taylor), a beautiful young woman from Maryland who is new to Texas. She marries Benedict, while Rink discovers oil on a small plot of land. Newly rich, he buys up all the land surrounding the Benedict ranch. Nominated for 10 Oscars this sweeping saga of jealousy, racism and the clash of cultures set in the Texas oilfields belongs on the big screen. The film won director Stevens an Oscar and garnered James Dean a second posthumous nomination. With Mercedes McCambridge, Carroll Baker and Dennis Hopper.

This epic historical drama charts the life of Andrei Rublev, 15th century icon painter. Rublev lives in a world consumed by feudal violence and human degradation, and the turmoil around him makes him lose the will to speak. After many years of silent travelling around medieval Russia, he meets a young boy who has taken charge of the construction of a large silver bell, and in him discovers the inspiration to speak again. Immediately suppressed upon release by the regime, Andrei Rublev is considered Tarkovsky’s first masterpiece.

Mirror SUSSR 1975 107 mins Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky

After the success of Solaris, Tarkovsky made one of his most personal films in the heavily autobiographical Mirror. Reflecting upon his own childhood alongside the history of the Russian people, Tarkovsky creates a dreamscape layering memories of childhood with dreams and nightmares. A visual insight into Tarkovsky the man and Tarkovsky the artist, the film resonates with directors, placing No.9 in the 2012 Sight and Sound Greatest Films Of All Time Director’s Poll.

Nostalgia SUSSR 1983 125 mins Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky

Andrei Gortchakov (Oleg Yankovsky) is a Russian author on an Italian research expedition with his beautiful translator Eugenia (Domiziana Giordano) to retrace the journey of 18th century Russian composer named Sosnovsky who, despite achieving international recognition away from his homeland, eschewed fame and returned to the humble life of a feudal serf. Highly cerebral, beautifully realised this is an abstract exploration of nostalgia, for a physical and cultural past.

Solaris SUSSR 1972 166 mins Dir: Andrei Rarkovsky

Adapted from the 1968 novel by Stanislaw Lem, Tarkovsky tackled the book in an attempt to find a popular cinematic subject. Donatas Banionis is a cosmonaut sent to investigate disappearances on the space station orbiting the planet Solaris, only to be confronted by the past in the vision of his dead wife, absorbingly played by Natalya Bondarchuk. Tarkovsky’s final film explores a deeply personal statement on humanity’s self-destruction and the end of the world. Starting on the precipice of World War III, the story is about Alexander, a journalist and former actor and philosopher who, on the outbreak of war, turns to God and offers himself up as a sacrifice to change the world and stop the war. The Sacrifice is a heart-breaking but ultimately reaffirming film about love, humanity and faith.

Sophie is an ordinary girl who works in a hat shop, but one day she is swept off her feet by the mysterious wizard Howl, and is then turned into a 90-year old woman by the evil Witch of the Waste. In order to lift the curse, Sophie travels with Howl aboard his floating castle, as he risks his life to bring peace to a warring kingdom. Based on the beloved novel by English writer Diana Wynne Jones.

The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu) Friday 8th – Sunday 10th July Japan 2013 126 mins Dir: Hayao Miyazaki

Miyazaki announced his retirement and said that The Wind Rises would be his last feature film of an illustrious career. He continues his love of aviation with this tale of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the Japanese fighter planes during World War II. Chronicling his life from key historical events, to more personal loves and friendships, Miyazaki has created a moving and beautiful masterpiece.

Princess Kaguya (Kaguyahime No Monogatari) Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th July Japan 2013 137 mins Dir: Isao Takahata

Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata explores one of Japan’s most famous folktales, ‘The Tale Of The Bamboo Cutter’, in this enchanting animation. An old bamboo cutter happens upon a tiny girl the size of his thumb. Taking her home to his wife, the couple raise the girl as their own.

Laputa: Castle In The Sky (Tenku No Shiro Rapyuta) Friday 5th – Thursday 11th August Japan 1986 125 mins Dir: Hayao Miyazaki

Pazu, an engineer’s apprentice, finds a young girl, Sheeta, floating down from the sky wearing a glowing pendant. Together, they discover both are searching for the legendary floating castle, Laputa, and vow to unravel the mystery of the luminous crystal around her neck. Their quest isn’t easy though with sky pirates, secret agents and monumental obstacles stopping them from discovering the truth.

‘Porco Rosso’, a veteran World War I pilot in 1930s Italy, who has been cursed to look like an anthropomorphic pig! He makes a living flying contract jobs, such as rescuing those kidnapped by air pirates. When rival ace, Curtis arrives intent on making a name for himself at Porco’s expense, Porco has to stand up and be human again.

Miyazaki’s first film under the Studio Ghibli umbrella is an adaptation of his manga, set in the distant future after human civilisation has been wiped out in a global war known as the ‘Seven Days Of Fire’. In the isolated Valley Of The Wind, Princess Nausicaa rules over a small group of survivors, the valley bordered on all sides by a toxic jungle guarded by monstrous insect creatures.

ADAPTING HIGHSMITH A SEASON OF PATRICIA HIGHSMITH ADAPTATIONSPatricia Highsmith – an American who lived most of her life in Europe, where she enjoyed success largely denied her at home – is one of the most adapted-for-cinema authors of the mid/late 20th Century. Although working specifically in crime fiction, the artistry and intelligence she brought to her work is widely considered to have transcended the genre and rival that of mainstream literature.

Strangers On A Train Sunday 10th – Thursday 14th July UK 1951 101 mins Dir: Alfred Hitchcock

Often referred to as Alfred Hitchcock’s return to form after a series of critical and commercial disappointments and co-written by Raymond Chandler, Strangers On A Train was adapted from Highsmith’s debut novel, published just a couple of months after her 29th birthday in 1950. Robert Walker and Farley Granger play Bruno and Guy, two young men whose chance meeting on a train journey leads to a supposedly fool-proof murder swap as Bruno agrees to kill Guy’s wife if Guy disposes of Bruno’s father.

Middle aged perfumer Vic Allen (Jean-Louis Trintigant) lives on the island of Jersey with his young wife Melanie (Isabelle Huppert) and their daughter Marion (Sandrine Kljajic). Melanie embarks on a string of extra-marital flirtations, all with her husband’s apparent approval, but mild-mannered, chess-playing Vic soon has murder on his mind. This version of Highsmith’s 1957 novel has a dark humour poised mischievously between Luis Bunuel and Claude Chabrol.

The big screen version of Highsmith’s ‘The Blunderer’ stars a pre-Goldfinger Gert Frobe as boorish bookseller Melchior Kimmel. After seeming to escape justice for killing his wife, Kimmel comes to the attention of philandering husband Walter Saccard. When Saccard’s spouse Clara comes to a tragic end, the police are quick to link the deaths.

The Talented Mr Ripley Sunday 4th – Tuesday 6th September USA 1999 139 mins Dir: Anthony Minghella

After the Oscar-laden success of his adaptation The English Patient, Anthony Minghella tackled a very different literary source – the book that first introduced Tom Ripley. “I loved the tone of the novel” he said,

“airless, alienated, uncomfortable, claustrophobic, lonely and also quite harsh”. Casting Matt Damon as the protagonist opposite Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, Minghella sought to be faithful to the original text.

The Cry Of The Owl (Le Cri Du Hibou) SSunday 18th – Tuesday 20th September France/Italy 1987 102 mins Dir: Claude Chabrol

Highsmith and Claude Chabrol seemed to be made for each other so it’s surprising that the prolific French director (La Femme Infidele, Le Boucher) didn’t turn to the writer’s work more regularly. Although Highsmith herself considered The Cry Of The Owl a lesser novel, Chabrol recognised its great power. The film centres on the unusual relationship between Robert (Christophe Malavoy) and Juliette (Mathilda May), which develops after Robert, a draughtsman and part time artist, admits to having spied on her for several months.

Coriolanus Wednesday 7th & Thursday 8th September UK 2011 123 mins Dir: Ralph Fiennes

Ralph Fiennes made his directorial debut with his transposition of Shakespeare’s Rome set play to the mid-1990s Balkans, amid a chorus of television news pundits and up close and personal warfare. Fiennes takes the central role of banished hero Coriolanus among a strong supporting cast including Gerard Butler, Brian Cox, James Nesbit and Vanessa Redgrave.

King Lear Wednesday 21st & Thursday 22nd September UK 1970 134 mins Dir: Peter Brook

Legendary stage director Peter Brook directs his own adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. King Lear (Paul Scofield), having decided to split his kingdom between his three daughters, decides to apportion the lands according to which daughter declaims her love for him best. When his daughter Cordelia refuses to flatter her father’s ego with claims of devotion, Lear angrily gives the lion’s share of his power to her sisters, Goneril and Regan. They soon abuse the trust, and Lear finds himself emasculated and powerless. Before long he is drifting into madness, as his former empire falls apart.

Koichi Nishi (Toshiro Mifune) is a grieving son seeking revenge for the suicide of his father. By assuming a new identity he rises through the ranks of the Public Corporation and cynically marries the president’s daughter to better infiltrate the company and expose the corrupt practice that was responsible for his father’s death. However as Koichi falls in love with his wife, disaster looms. A powerful indictment of the dark side of business and politics with distinct overtones of Hamlet.

All Night Long Monday 12th & Tuesday 13th September UK 1962 91 mins Dir: Basil Dearden

This adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello updates the tale to 1960s Britain and brings the jazz greats of the day along for the ride. Aurelius Rex (Paul Harris) is happily married to Delia (Marti Stevens). Patrick McGoohan (The Prisoner) plays Johnny Cousin (this film’s Iago) who is scheming to steal Rex’s job and starts to spread rumours of Delia’s unfaithfulness. Also starring Betsy Blair and Richard Attenborough, All Night Long is set against the jazz backdrop of Dave Brubeck, Charlie Mingus and many more.

Conceived by Candice Jacobs, Sunscreen explores the role of the internet in both work and leisure. It considers how our tastes, aspirations and value systems are controlled through consumerism. East Meets West 2.0 presents sixteen artists working with moving image or photography, gathered from an open call to practitioners based within the Midlands, or those who have graduated from a Midlands-based University in the past three years.

The open call asked for responses relating to ‘Leisure’ – a core theme explored in Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf – and resulted in a fascinating and diverse collection of interpretations, from projects delving into drinking culture, documenting community-led action to save a local swimming baths, to a sensitive portrait of a young Shetland Island resident’s use of his leisure time.

Through a selection process conducted by a panel of experts, the work of the selected artists will be exhibited throughout QUAD’s Extra Gallery Spaces, before touring to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in partnership with GRAIN Projects, Birmingham, while also receiving a one-to-one professional development session from industry professionals.

QUAD would like to thank Nicola Shipley, Director at GRAIN Projects, David Severn, Sebah Chaudhry and Claire Reece for collaborating on this project, the artists for their participation in East Meets West 2.0, and to all those who submitted to the open call.

“Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf is not just fun, it’s a critique of the leisure industry. A bit like Banksy’s Dismaland, but with shorter queues.” Jonathan Jones, The Guardian

This summer Doug Fishbone transforms QUAD Gallery into a playful environment, taking visitors on an amusing and thought-provoking journey with an artist-designed mini-golf course. The Gallery installation uses the fun and accessible game of mini-golf as a powerful tool for questioning the leisure industry and society’s compulsion for consumption whilst also addressing other important cultural topics from migration to global warming and globalisation.

The artwork was commissioned for the 56th Venice Biennale by EM15, a collective of arts organisations from the East Midlands, including QUAD, New Art Exchange, One Thoresby Street and Beacon Art Project with support from Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham. COMING SOON! Glitched! Quest for the Lost MacGuffin24th September – 20th November 2016

A MacGuffin is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object, or other motivator that the protagonist pursues, often with little or no narrative explanation. The specific nature of a MacGuffin is typically unimportant to the overall plot.

Glitched: Quest for the Lost MacGuffin is a game-like journey in which the player explores QUAD Gallery, looking for five fragments of a ‘lost’ MacGuffin. These fragments exist as ‘Augmented Reality’ (AR) – visible only through the screen of a handheld tablet computer. Once the five fragments have been found the ‘lost’ MacGuffin is revealed.

But beware! There are decoy MacGuffins – can you find the five fragments of the lost MacGuffin?! And to throw you off the scent, the gallery is full of ‘glitches’ – real-life corruptions or fissures in the everyday world around us that will make your journey around the gallery very interesting indeed!

Artists Talk: ReactorWednesday 27 July, 7:00pm – 9:00pm, QUAD Gallery and Participation Space, FREE

Reactor will discuss their recent commission for ‘Leisure Land Golf’ – Alligator Resort – in the context of the group’s ever-expanding menagerie of animals, deities, totems and hybrids. They will speculate on the role and function of these characters within various projects, fictional worlds and social microcosms created over the last fifteen years.

Reactor is an art collective, comprising Bruce Asbestos, Phillip Henderson and Niki Russell. Through ongoing research into belief systems and their place in collective action, Reactor explores the ways in which culture and common beliefs hold together specific social groups. Each project creates a different social microcosm with its own internal iconography, logic and meanings – from a utopic new community in a small rural Scottish village, to a Big Lizard Fun Bus touring city centres across Europe.

Reactor has completed numerous national and international commissions, working in the UK with organisations such as Gallery North (Newcastle), Grizedale Arts (Cumbria), Castlefield Gallery (Manchester), and internationally with KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), MoBY (Tel Aviv), and Schirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt).

Back by popular demand, this five week course is ideal if you have recently purchased, are going to purchase or want to learn more about your digital SLR camera. It is suitable for people who have only used the ‘Auto’ mode and are uncertain about the other camera functions. Designed to demystify the features and characteristics of these cameras in an interesting and accessible way, the course, with tutor Jon Legge, will feature talks, ‘hands-on’ workshops, demonstrations and group activities. By the end of the course you will have the confidence to use the camera in more creative way, and have a basic understanding of light, composition and colour.

This is a one-day workshop aimed at people who already take photographs and want to be able to take better portraits. The emphasis of the course is on learning a range of techniques useful in portrait photography (children and adults) and building confidence.

It will cover using your own digital cameras to best effect, flash and available light, modifying light, colour balance, focal lengths and their affect on portraits, using basic accessories and tricks for putting people at their ease.

Artist Training and Development Course Starting in September 2016

Places are now available for the latest edition of the Artist Training and Development Course at QUAD. This is a unique 20 week training and development course written and led by QUAD, working with high profile arts organisations including Tate, Watershed and First Movement. The course focuses on career sustainability including digital skills to enhance artists practice, portfolio development, online presence and marketing, participation, socially engaged work and fundraising. The programme will offer portfolio reviews, weekly studio time to work on a personal project that combines current practice and digital skills, to be shared with curators at the end of the programme.

Throughout this programme QUAD aims to develop artists’ skill set, by helping run courses, workshops and overall to expand their artistic careers.

The course will include:

• Practical digital creative skills appropriate to your own art practice

• Technologies such as Makey Makey, conductive paint, working with sensors and projection mapping

• Time and support to develop a personal project

• Using your new skills to develop participatory workshops for arts organisations

• Participatory work-placements at high profile organisations

• Fundraising for art projects

• Developing industry partnerships for future work

• Artists’ survival skills

The 10th Derby Festé welcomes the return of the Dragons!

Derby Festé returns for its tenth year, transforming the city centre into a world-class festival site with performances for the whole family to enjoy. Kicking off on Friday night with a parade through the city centre with Sarruga’s giant fire-breathing Dragons stalking through the streets.

On Saturday the streets will come to life from noon with entertainers for the whole family including live music, circus performances, dance, and acrobatics.

The headline act is MÚ by the fantastic acrobatic Transe Express on Bass’ Recreation Ground, the atmospheric show will transport the crowds to a magic oceanic world. Colourful neon sea creatures elevated on a huge telescopic crane will cavort on the lit surface of the sea with the fish and other ocean dwellers weaving their way through the audience.

Q Club Group

QUAD’s Creative Wellbeing Programme has recently received Children in Need funding to relaunch our Q Club group. Q Club is an after school club for children and young people aged 5 – 18yrs. Half of the places for the group are targeted at children on the autistic spectrum, the other half can be referred for a variety of reasons including children with additional support needs or communication difficulties, who are socially excluded, have disabilities, are young carers or bereaved children.

Q Club will provide structured and developmental participatory arts workshops with a focus on the collaboration of digital and traditional creative exploration. In addition to this we will also be hosting monthly family sessions that invite parents/carers and siblings to participate and create art together.

Introductory Summer Sessions will be held throughout August, future sessions will be delivered on Thursdays.

ACCESS DETAILSQUAD is a fully accessible building, with a lift and facilities on all floors. There is a Sound PlusTM Infrared Listening system in the Cinemas, and an Integrated Loop system in the QUAD Box Office, The Box, Digital Suite, Meeting Room and QUAD Café Bar.
