IN THIS ISSUE:
AT the end of September the
Troop took part in SplashCamp.
This is a fantastic event wherea 190 Scouts from all over
Leicestershire take part inadventurous activities, such asKayaking, Sub Aqua, Sailing,Climbing and the High Ropes
Course. This all takes place at the
Leicester Outdoor Pursuit
Center for one action packed
weekend.
During the weekend those
who wanted too took part in achallenge to see how fast they
could paddle a 100 metres on acanoeing machine.
The fastest Scout over theweekend won a prize.
This was our very own seniorpatrol leader Bevan Wray.
On the Sunday afternoon
there was another competition
between all the Troops. The Scouts had to do a relay
race on the canoeing machine tosee
who was the fastest Troopwhich Queniborough also won.
This was a brilliant way forthe lads to finish the weekend
off.Ian Merry

MESSAGES AND NOTESCHAIRMANS NOTE
As you read through thenewsletter, I am sure you will
agree with me that it seems tohave been a busy and exciting
autumn session with each ofthe sections putting together a
full programme of activities. We have a great bunch of
kids (and room for more ofcourse!) and it is exciting for
our leaders to see them havingfun whilst at the same time,
developing their personal skills
in line with The Scout Promiseand the Scout Law.
Scouting provides an
opportunity to develop lifeskills such as self confidence,
team working and leadershipthat will stand them in good
stead in the future when theyare looking to leave school and
start on their careers. That said, Christmas is just
around the corner and it seemsas good a time as any to use
this column to say thank you.
Firstly, thank you to all theleaders and those they have co-
opted to help for giving uptheir free time to run the
sections, raise funds, writeminutes of meetings, maintainthe hall and equipment andkeep the accounts in good
order.Secondly, my special thanks
to Ben King for all the efforthe puts into this newsletter and
for his patience in waiting forme to write this.
Thirdly, may I also thank
you, the parents and readers foryour continuing support andcommitment to the group as a
whole. And finally may I take this
opportunity to wish all theBeavers, Cubs and Scouts a
lovely Christmas and a veryHappy New Year. We look
forward to seeing you all inearly January.

A WIDER VIEW
MYTHBUSTING FILM HITS NEW HEIGHTSThe following arcle is from www.scouts.org.uk:Our Expect More film,
which shows the positive
impact of Scouting on young
people today, has now
reached over 50,000 views in
just five months.
It tracks the journey of seven
teenagers from a tough Londonestate to Gilwell Park Scout
Activity Centre where they find
a true sense of community inthe activities they undertaketogether. Asking What do you
expect? the film challengesperceptions of Scouting and
highlights the difference wemake to the lives of young
people.
Expect more
Film-maker, Tony Lundon of
The Cell Productions, explainswhy he supported the project:
The opportunity to tell adifferent story about young
people, one with a bit of hope, was what interested me about
the campaign.Essentially, what I tried to
say was that young people, whatever their background, will
make both good and baddecisions - there is no getting
away from that. But the contextwithin which they make them
can be what makes or breaks ayoung person's future.
Camping, climbing, canoeing ... and now politics
FULL OF DIVERSITY: The film shows viewers how diverse Scouting can be and that people from all
backgrounds can be part of the adventure-
You can watch here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOM1n22XyHA
Our partner, The Discovery
Channel, supported thecampaign by releasing a 30-
second version of the film ontheir networks in July. In
another first for Scouting, thenational television advert
encouraged people to volunteerfor Scouting and help to change
a life.
Community impact
In 2011 we commissioned anindependent report to measure
our impact on young people. Itfound that Scouting can help
young people make a real andlong-lasting commitment to
their communities and developa wide range of valuable skills.
The film ends with themessage: These should be the
best years of their lives. With
your help we can make thathappen, and challenges viewers
to Expect more. Afterwatching the film the website
invites people to learn moreabout the impact of Scouting.

SCOUTS took over the House
of Commons on Wednesday31st October to launch Talk
This Way: From Scout toSpeaker of the House, a re-
source to help Scouts becomeactive, engaged and informed
citizens, ready to play their part
in the democratic process.
To celebrate the launch, hun-dreds of Scouts challenged MPs
to test their brainpower as partof a head-to-head quiz in Parlia-
ment.Local MPs teamed up with 32
Scout Groups from across the
UK to compete against eachother in a quiz hosted by Going
for Golds Henry Kelly. Hetested the Scouts and MPs on a
range of parliamentary issuesincluding law-making, political
parties and the electoral pro-
cess.
Talk This Way, the new re-source pack launched at the
event, is available to all Scoutleaders and aims to educate
young people about Parliament. It uses a variety of activities to
show how they can engage with
and influence the democraticprocess. The resource includes
House of Commons-style de-bates to encourage Scouts to
think about arguments from allsides and develop their views ontoday's most important political
issues.
The resource, created in part-nership with Parliament's Edu-
cation Service, builds on activi-ties such as the successfulScouts Question Time and theScouts Speak Up events at this
year's party conferences. The
aim is to get young people talk-ing to politicians and to develop
the important relationships be-tween Scouts and their local
MPs.

TWAS THE NIGHTBEFORE CHRISTMAS
"'Twas the night before
Christmas,
when all through the houseNot a creature was stirring,not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung bythe chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soonwould be there;
The children were nestled allsnug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plumsdanced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for along winter's nap,
When out on the lawn therearose such a clatter,I sprang from the bed to seewhat was the matter.
Away to the window I flew likea flash,
Tore open the shutters andthrew up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the
new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to
objects below,When, what to my wondering
eyes should appear,But a miniature sleigh, andeight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, solively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must beSt. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his
coursers they came,And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;'Now,Dasher! now,Dancer!
now,Prancerand Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on,
DonderandBlitzen! To the top of the porch!
to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away!dash away all!'
As dry leaves that before thewild hurricane fly
When they meet with anobstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top thecoursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, Iheard on the roofThe prancing and pawing of
each little hoof.As I drew in my head, and was
turning around,Down the chimney St.
Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, fromhis head to his foot,
And his clothes were alltarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flungon his back,
And he looked like a peddlerjust opening his pack.
His eyes - how they twinkled!
his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses,
his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was
drawn up like a bowAnd the beard of his chin was
as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he heldtight in his teeth,And the smoke it encircled his
head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little
round belly,That shook when he laughed,
like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a
right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him,
in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist
of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had
nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went
straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings;
then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of
his nose,
And giving a nod, up the
chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his
team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the
down of a thistle,
But I heard him exclaim, ere he
drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to
all a good-night.'"
