QR Code Label Placement Guidelines
This document will offer recommendations for the label placement of the QR code during the
inventory/validation process. The QR code labels used by CenturyLink are made from durable Kimdura
synthetic paper which is designed to be used in wet, harsh, dirty, and direct sunlight conditions.
QR code placement should be visible and obvious to which equipment it is associated with. For most
equipment, the QR code label will be placed next to the manufacturers label or the equipment number,
whichever is most visible. When it is not possible to place the label on the equipment, place the QR code
on the disconnect or control panel for that equipment if it is close and obviously associated with it. If
neither of these conditions exists, affix the tag to something that can be hung from the equipment such
as a baseball card protector or access badge holder.
On Equipment Sub-types like Environmental Alarms, Exit & Emergency Lighting, Fire Extinguishers, and
Septic Systems, the QR code is placed inside the common entrance on the wall. This area should be
used for QR codes that do not have a specific area to place them on their respective equipment. See the
example below.
Figure 1 - QR codes that may not have a specific area to place them
For the building QR code label, record the Address ID on the line above the QR code. For equipment QR
code labels, record the equipment number (BMSe#) on the line above the QR code.
1. Backflow Preventer - Hang a tag on the backflow preventer and place the QR code label on the
tag, or place the QR code on the wall by the backflow preventer or on the support bracket.
a. BFP Installed Outside (Irrigation) - Hang a tag
on the backflow preventer and place the QR
code label on the tag or inside the common
entrance on the wall along with other QR
codes that may not have a specific area to
place them on their respective equipment.
2. Booster Pump – Place the QR code on the electrical
disconnect or the control box whichever is most
visible.
3. Building – Place the QR code on the common
entrance door frame or permanently affixed plate
next to the door if equipped.
4. Building Automation Main Control Panel – Place the QR code on the control panel.
5. Building Water Filters – Place QR code on the wall next to the filter or hang a tag on the filter
and place the QR code label on the tag.
6. Builtup UPS - Place the QR code label next to the Manufacturers label or the equipment number
whichever is most visible.
7. Dock lift – Place the QR code label on the control box.
8. Elevator – Place the QR code on the control panel.
9. Environmental Alarms - Inside the common entrance on the wall along with other QR codes
that may not have a specific area to place them on their respective equipment.
10. Escalator – Place the QR code on the control panel.
11. Exit & Emergency Lighting - Inside the common entrance on the wall along with other QR codes
that may not have a specific area to place them on their respective equipment.
12. Fire Protection/Detection Systems – Place the QR code on the control panel.
13. Fire Extinguishers - inside the common entrance on the wall along with other QR codes that
may not have a specific area to place them on their respective equipment.
14. Fire Pump - Place the QR code on the electrical disconnect or the control box whichever is most
visible.
15. Generator - Place the QR code label next to the
Manufacturers label or the equipment number whichever
is most visible.
16. HVAC equipment mounted at floor level – Place the QR
code label next to the Manufacturers label or the
equipment number whichever is most visible.
17. HVAC equipment mounted high:
a. Above a drop ceiling – Place the QR code on the
electrical disconnect or control box, on the ceiling
tile grid below the unit, on the wall below the unit
whichever is most visible.
b. Above a finished ceiling - Place the QR code on the

electrical disconnect or control box, or next to the access hatch.
c. Open ceiling - Place the QR code on the electrical disconnect or control box or on the
wall below the unit whichever is most visible.
18. Kitchen Equipment - Place the QR code label next to the Manufacturers label or the equipment
number whichever is most visible. On the cooking equipment this can be difficult due to the
grease that tends to accumulate on this equipment. Do your best to clean (de-grease) a visible
spot to place the QR code or hang a tag on the equipment and place the QR code label on the
tag
19. Landscape Sprinkler – Place QR code on the time clock or inside the common entrance on the
wall along with other QR codes that may not have a specific area to place them on their
respective equipment.
20. Mail Lift/Conveyor – Place the QR code on the control panel.
21. Packaged UPS - Place the QR code label next to the Manufacturers label or the equipment
number whichever is most visible.
22. Portable Toilet – Place QR code inside the unit on the back wall.
23. Roofs – If there is a ladder and hatch, place the QR code on the inside rail of the ladder.
If there is no roof access, place the QR code inside the common entrance on the wall along
with other QR codes that may not have a specific area to place them on their respective
equipment.
24. Self Contained Smoke Detector – Place the QR code next to the device. What about multiple
detectors? Inside the common entrance on the wall along with other QR codes that may not
have a specific area to place them on their respective equipment.
25. Septic System - Inside the common entrance on the wall along with other QR codes that may
not have a specific area to place them on their respective equipment.
26. Sewage Ejector – Place the QR code on the electrical disconnect
or control panel, on wall above the pit or on the discharge pipe.
27. Stand Alone Fuel Tank - Place the QR code label next to the
Manufacturers label or the equipment number whichever is most
visible.
28. Sump Pump - Place the QR code on the electrical disconnect or
control panel, on wall above the pit or on the discharge pipe.
29. Walk-in Cooler – Place QR code on the condenser next to the
manufacturers label.
30. Walk-in Freezer - Place QR code on the condenser next to the
manufacturers label.
31. Water Conditioner – Place the QR code on the control box.
32. Water Fountain – Place QR code by the equipment number or manufacturers label whichever is
most visible.

33. Water Loops - Since there is no manufacturer’s label for a water loop place the equipment
number and the QR code label on one of the circulating pump electrical disconnects or control
box whichever is most visible.
34. Well Water System – Place the QR code on the electrical disconnect or the control box
whichever is most visible.
