QUEENSLAND ORCHID SOCIETY INC. GENERAL MEETING
Red Hill Sports Club, 22 Fulcher Road, Red Hill
Minutes Monday, 8th June, 2015
The President, Albert Gibbard, declared the meeting open at 7.55 pm and welcomed the members and
visitors present. Apologies were as per the attendance book.
Albert called a minutes silence in memory of Ray Brighouse, who passed away in the last week of May.
Ray had been a Member of QOS for 28 years, joining in October, 1987. He will be sadly missed.
The Judges for the night were Les Lobley, Ken Webster, Les Vickers, Reg Illingworth & Students.
Reg Illingworth took the photos to be published in the Newsletter.
There was no Guest Society this evening because of the Queen’s Birthday Weekend.
Albert reminded those present to obtain raffle tickets. Prizes were from a variety of well grown plants
and some sundry items on the table. The raffle ticket sellers were Kent Walker and Greg Malloy.
Nine prizes were later drawn for the raffle.
The Treasurer, Nick Woolley, tabled the financial report for the month of June 2015, and moved accep-
tance. Nick reminded members to pay in any outstanding QOS cheques. The report was seconded by
Margaret Horsey. All in favour. Copy of the report was available on the notice table.
Gary Yong Gee kindly presented a programme obtained from Doctor Noel Grundon, “Hygiene in the
Bush House” This programme was interesting and probably prompted members to be more thorough
with the cleanliness of bush houses. Thank you Gary.
After the supper break, Albert thanked all those who had worked in the kitchen and also thanked
raffle ticket sellers, Greg and Kent. Nine prizes, plants or other were given out.
Myra Westphal was the lucky exhibitor.
Albert reminded the Members of the QOS bus trip on the19th July. Members will only pay $30 and
members of Affiliated Societies to pay $35.
The Bus will leave the usual meeting place at Red Hill at approximately 7am–7.15am.
There is another pick-up point on the north side, please ring Albert for details on this stop.
Judges Choice – plant of the night was Brasiliorchis schunkeana owned by Gary Yong Gee.
First in Judges Choice Hybrids went to Margaret Tierney with Den. macrophyllum x polysema and first
in Judges Choice Species went to Les & Helen Vickers with Den. fairrieanum. These plants were very
presentable and well grown. Ken Webster did the plant commentary, & Barry Kable held up the win-
ning plants. Thanks to Ken & Barry.
Barry Kable reminded members of the display to be put on at the Exhibition. Margaret Tierney and
Maree Illingworth will be in charge of the set-up. All types of orchids and foliage plants are needed for
display. All orchids & foliage must be in first class condition. We need QOS members and also Affili-
ated members to mind the display for each day of the show. (2 people for each shift) A roster will be
available.
Albert thanked all members who took care of the numerous jobs at the meeting.
The next General meeting of the Society will be on Monday, 13th July, 2015 at 8pm, at the Red Hill
Community Centre, Red Hill. There being no further business, the June meeting closed at 9.45pm

Tips for July Although the Winter weather is cold and the Spring Shows seem a long way off, its time
to identify potential plants for the upcoming shows. The promising new mature growths
need to be supported to promote good flower presentation in the Spring. One winter show
to visit this month is John Oxley’s show at Mt Coot-tha
Cultural Notes
Cattleyas will be starting to produce sheaths and the softcane dendrobiums should also be
showing sigms of flowering. Natives and cymbidiums are also preparing to flower so
give them good light. Prevent damping off by watering early. Maintain regular fungicide
application. Phalaenopsis remain vulnerable to fungal attack. It’s not the cold particularly
that phalaenopsis can’t handle but the fungal problems that emanate from the cold damp
( high humidity nights) . Fertilise with a low N high K fertiliser about once every ten days
with water being applied at a five to seven day interval.

Special Interest Plant Of The Month June 2015
PLANT NAME: Brasiliorchis schunkeana
OWNER’S NAME: Gary Yong Gee
JUDGE’S COMMENT: Unusual species
OWNERS COMMENTS
Housing : Polycarbonate covered greenhouse with shade cloth providing approximately 80%
shade.
Watering : Rainwater tank water supplied about every two days during warmer months, Sep-
tember till May in the evening. Morning watering twice a week in Winter. Automated over-
head misting system helps maintain high humidity.
Feeding Program : Horticultural Solutions HS022 September to December changing over to
HS012 January to May once a week, reducing in Winter.
Potting Medium : The mix is Sphagnum Moss with polystyrene granules as purchased. I will probably change 10:1 perlite/peat moss when next repotted.
Other Cultural Comments : Best treated as an intermediate grower. Keep evenly moist with
good air circulation. Black flowers are long lived and produce progressively over several
months.

The Dendrobium Genus
LATEST DEFINITIONS
ACCORDING TO
GENERA ORCHIDACEARUM
VOL. 6
• The following generic names (amongst others) have been reduced to
synonyms of Dendrobium.
• Callista, Grastidium, Pedilonum, Cadetia, Thelychiton, Tropilis, La-
touria, Sarcopodium, Diplocaulobium, Epigeneium, Flickingeria,
Australorchis, Dockrillia, Latourorchis, Winika, Cepobaculum,
Ceratobium, Davejonesia, Durabaculum, Leioanthum, Stelbophyl-
lum, Tetrabaculum, Vappodes.
• Not all orchid authors and enthusiasts like this or agree with it but
the RHS has accepted these findings for hybrid registrations!
• Several of these were names published by Clements and Jones as a
result of their studies of the DNA of our Australian orchids.
• Their “new names” were not widely accepted and their DNA work
did not appear to be accepted by a concensus of taxonomists around
the world.
The work done by the authors of G.O. Vol 6 has included DNA
sequencing as well as studies of Anatomy, Palynology, Cytogenetics,
Phytochemistry, Phylogenetics, Biogeography, Ecology and Pollina-
tion and has found far wider acceptance.
8
• They have used an Infrageneric treatment (Sections) and produced a
description of each section and a key to these.
• Of particular interest to us is the loss of the genera Cadetia, Diplo-
caulobium, Epigeneium, Flickingeria and Dockrillia.
• Dockrillias are assigned to Dendrobium section Rhizobium, which
is where they were when I first learned about them more than twenty
years ago!!
