THE EUROPEAN GREEN CAPITAL AWARD

Following Stockholm in 2010 and Hamburg in 2011, Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain) and Nantes (France) will be The European GreenCapitals for 2012 and 2013.

The award of European Green Capital is given each year to a European city that has made exceptional efforts to protect theenvironment and to achieve sustainable development. The judges’ decision is based on eleven environmental criteria suchas: local transport, green urban areas, quality of air, noise, waste production and management and water consumption.

Inhabitants of the city centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz do not live more than 300 metres away from a green space. The city has alsomade an enormous effort to reduce its water consumption, and aims to bring it down to less than 100 litres a day per person.

Nantes, the winner for 2013, has an ambitious transport policy. It was the first French town to reintroduce electric trams, and itnow has a desirable air quality and expects to reduce CO2 emissions by a quarter by 2020.

BRAZIL PREPARES FOR TOURIST BOOM

Brazil is preparing for major tourist invasion as two of the world’s biggest sporting events will be organized in the country in the coming years. The 2014 Football World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil is expecting twice the number of visitors that it has in normal years. In 2010, about 5 million visitors came to the country. That is a very low number compared to France which has almost 80 million visitors a year and the US with 60 million.

There are two main reasons why Brazil has not been a popular tourist destination. First, it is far away from Europe and flight costs make it an expensive place to go to. Secondly, the country’s crime rate has discouraged many potential tourists.

Brazil’s economy is successful and the money that it is generating is being invested in infrastructure and projects for the future. Airports are being improved, roads are being built and public transportation expanded. New hotels are being constructed and more and more people are being employed in tourism-related jobs.

The Brazilian government hopes that these sporting events will give the country a great tourism expansion. Once tourists are in the country, they should not only concentrate on the sporting events but also on the spectacular attractions that Brazil has to offer, like the Iguacu Falls in the south, or the Amazon rainforest in the north and central parts of the country. During the two big events police forces supported by army units will be patrolling the streets to give visitors the feeling of safety.

THE ENVIRONMENT

The latest IPCC's report (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), reveals there could befour possible futures for global population, economy and environment at the end of thiscentury. In 2100, the Earth will probably be between 0.3 and 4.8 °C warmer than it was in thelate 20th century. This is one of the key messages of the report. Why such a broad differencein the temperature? Because the rise in temperature depends essentially on what we chooseto do now: where our energy and food come from, the type of buildings we live in and the carswe drive. And of course, how many people populate the planet.

Callum Roberts, who grew up by the sea on the north Scottish coast, is professor of marineconservation at the University of York in England. He is also the author of the book “Ocean ofLife. How our seas are changing”. He affirms that the situation regarding our oceans isdramatic. He says that if we look at the sea, we have long treated it as a place from which wecan take as much as we want and into which we can put as much as we want, so it has been adumping ground for all sorts of waste. Now we are seeing that the sea's capacity to absorb ourwaste is definitely limited.

There is a firm evidence that points to a clear picuture: human activity is damaging the planet'shealth. If greenhouse gas emissions continue, if we go on polluting the sea; there will beserious consequences.

CITY LIFE VS COUNTRY LIFEMaria lives in a big city surrounded by the noise, traffic and stress of busy urban life. She works in anoffice with 1000 other employees, and travels to work on a crowded Metro. Her home is a flatoverlooking a busy city. After work, she meets her friends in a bar before going to the cinema or adisco. Weekends are spent in the shopping mall with its numerous shops, fast food restaurants andentertainment complexes.

Alex, however, lives in a small village in the countryside. He cycles to work every morning with thesound of tractors, birds and animals in his ears. In the evening, he relaxes at home in front of the firewith a good book to read. On weekends, he goes for long walks in the fields with his dog.

Today, unfortunately, it is not so simple to choose where you want to live; this is dictated by work orbirth. More than half the world’s population now lives in cities. In many North American and Europeancountries this can be as high as 80% of the population. Many modern cities have very large populationsand can be crowded, dirty and dangerous places to live. But, a modern countryside life has problemstoo: poor access to transport, hospitals, education and other services found in towns such as largeshops, banks and entertainment.

The United Nations emphasizes the need for strong links between urban and rural areas. On one hand, the Internet and other mass media have connected remote rural areas to the world, providing access tocommunication and information. On the other hand, the introduction of city green areas and traffic freezones has helped in bringing a little of the countryside to the city streets.
