ROOT LETTERS: ا م ن

LINGUISTIC MEANING: peace, security, protection and satisfaction of the self

• to accept what someone says on a superficial level < :امن له

• to have ‘certain’ faith in someone or something < :امن به

• antonym of kufr (disbelief ) ; takdheeb (denial) and khiyaana (betrayal)

• the absence of fear, worry and discomfort

TECHNICAL MEANING:

• To accept, believe and testify to what the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) brought.

• The belief in the heart, the attestation by the tongue and actions of the limbs.

• According to Hadith jibreel on the authority of Umar (RA) as recorded in Sahih Muslim, it is:

• That you believe in Allah and

• His Messengers and in the

• Last Day, and believe in the

• Fate (Qadar), its good and its evil.

EMAAN INCREASES AND DECREASES:

Things that Increase Emaan Things that Decrease Emaan

Reading the Quran and learning the deen. Not reading the Quran or learning the deen.

Dhikr of Allah e.g. Musnoon adhkaar. Too busy with the duniya.

Good company and surroundings. Bad company and surroundings.

Good actions. Actions that are displeasing to Allah.

STEPS TO ATTAIN REAL EMAAN:

i. Keeping the company of righteous and honest people:

“O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.” (Surah at-Tauba : 119)

ii. Studying the lives of the righteous predecessors:

Stories of the lives of the Prophets, the companions , the taabieen, taba’taabieen etc.

iii. Reflection and pondering on the signs in nature:

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of ] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason.” (Surah al-Baqarah : 164)

iv. Reflection and pondering on the signs within our selves:

“And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith]. And in yourselves. Then will you not see?”(Surah adh-Dhariyath : 20 - 21)

v. Reflection and pondering over the ayaat of the Quran:

“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.”

(Surah al-Anfaal : 2)

“And whenever a surah is revealed, there are among the hypocrites those who say, "Which of you has this increased in faith?" As for those who believed, it has increased them in faith, while they are rejoicing.” (Surah at-Tauba : 124)

SWEETNESS OF EMAAN

Anas bin Malik (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said,“There are three qualities whoever has them, will taste the sweetness of Iman: to love Allah and His Messenger (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) more than anyone else; to love a slave (of Allah) only for (the sake of ) Allah; and to hate returning to disbelief (kufr) after Allah has saved him from it as he would hate to be thrown into the fire (of Hell).” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise." (194)

And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allah , and Allah has with Him the best reward." شيء عـلـيمAllah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of ] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. (35)

They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will [fearfully] turn about - (37) That Allah may reward them [according to] the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty. And Allah gives provision to whom He wills without account. (38)

But those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage in a low land which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing, but finds Allah before Him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allah is swift in account. (39)

Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. 1. I swear by the Day of Resurrection; 2. And I swear by the self-reproaching person (a believer). 3. Does man (a disbeliever) think that We shall not assemble his bones? 4. Yes, We are Able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers. 5. Nay! (Man denies Resurrection and Reckoning. So) he desires to continue committing sins.6. He asks: "When will be this Day of Resurrection?" 7. So, when the sight shall be dazed, 8. And the moon will be eclipsed, 9. And the sun and moon will be joined together 10. On that Day man will say: "Where is the refuge?" 11. No! There is no refuge! 12. Unto your Lord (Alone) will be the place of rest that Day. 13. On that Day man will be informed of what he sent forward , and what he left behind. 14. Nay! Man will be a witness against himself . 15. Though he may put forth his excuses.

16. Move not your tongue concerning (the Qur'an, O Muhammad ) to make haste therewith. 17. It is for Us to collect it and to give you (O Muhammad ) the ability to recite it (the Qur'an), 18. And when We have recited it to you, then follow you its recital. 19. Then it is for Us (Allah) to make it clear to you,

20. No , but (you men) love the present life of this world, 21. And leave (neglect) the Hereafter. 22. Some faces that Day shall be Nadirah (shining and radiant). 23. Looking at their Lord (Allah); 24. And some faces, that Day, will be Basirah (dark, gloomy, frowning, and sad), 25. Thinking that some calamity was about to fall on them;

26. No! When the soul has reached the collar bones27. And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?" 28. And the dying one is certain that it is the [time of ] separation29. And the leg is wound about the leg,30. To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.31. And the disbeliever had not believed, nor had he prayed.32. But [instead], he denied and turned away.33. And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].34. Woe to you, and woe!35. Then woe to you, and woe!36. Does man think that he will be left neglected?37. Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?38. Then he was a clinging clot, and [ Allah ] created [his form] and proportioned [him]39. And made of him two mates, the male and the female.40. Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?

ـمـاوات ومـا في اoرض له اHـلك وله الحـمد وهو عـلى كلd شيء قـدير مـا في الس' dT حdيسـبه بـمـا تـعمـلـون بـصـير هو الـذي خلقكـم فمـنكـم كـافر ومـنكـم مؤمن والـل

إليه اHصير ــأحسن صوركم و ركم ف ماوات واoرض بالحقd وصو' خلق الس'دور Wعليم بذات الص 'Tرض ويعلم ما تسرون وما تعـلنون واoماوات وا يعلم ما في الس'

Whatever there is in the heavens glorifies Allah and whatever there is in the earth. To Him belongs all sovereignty and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things. (1) It is He who created you.Then some of you are faithless and some of you are faithful, and Allah sees best what you do. (2) He created the heavens and the earth with reason, and He formed you and perfected your forms, and toward Him is the destination. (3) He knows whatever there is in the heavens and the earth,and He knows whatever you hide and whatever you disclose, and Allah knows best what is in the breasts.(4)

ألم يأتكم نـبــأ الذين كفروا من قبل فذاقوا وبال أمرهم ولهم عذاب أليمذلك بــأنه كانت تأتيهم رسلهم باـلبينات فقالوا أبشر يهدوننا فكفروا وتولوا واسـتغـنى الله والله غني حميد

Has there not come to you the account of those who were faithless before? They tasted the evil consequences of their conduct, and there is a painful punishment for them. (5) That was because their apostles used to bring the manifest proofs, but they said, ‘Shall humans be our guides?!’ So they disbelieved and turned away, and Allah was in no need [of their faith] and Allah is all-sufficient, all-laudable. زعم الذين كفروا أن لن يبعثوا قل بلى وربي لـتبعـثن ثم لـتـنبؤن بما عملـتم وذلك على الله يسيرفآمنوا باT' ورسوله والـنور ال'ذي أنزلنا واT' بما تعملون خبير

يوم يجمعكم ليوم الجمع ذلك يوم الـت'غابن ومن يؤمن باT' ويعمل صالحا يكفdر عنه سيـdئاته ويدخله جـنات تجري من تحتها اoنهار خالدين فيها أبدا ذلك الفوز العظيموال'ذين كفروا وكذ'بوا بآياتنا أولئك أصحاب الـنار خالدين فيها وبئس اHصير

The faithless claim that they will not be resurrected. Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected;then you will surely be informed of what you did, and that is easy for Allah.’ (7) So have faith in Allah and His Apostle and the light which We have sent down, and Allah is well aware of what you do. (8) The day when He will gather you for the Day of Gathering, that will be a day of dispossession. And whoever has faith in Allah and acts righteously, He shall absolve him of his misdeeds and admit him into gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them forever. That is the great success. (9) But as for those who are faithless and deny Our signs, they shall be the inmates of the Fire, to remain in it [forever], and it is an evil destination. (10)

O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (14) Your wealth and your children are but a trial, and Allah has with Him a great reward. (15)

إن تعـفوا وتصـفحوا هـا الذين آمــنوا إن من أزواجكم وأولـادكم عدوا لكم فـاحـذروهم و يـا أيه غـفـور رحـيم ه عــنده أجر عظـيموتغفروا فإن الـل مـا أموالكم وأولـادكم فــتــنة والـل إن (١٤)(١٥)

No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah . And whoever believes in Allah - He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things. (11) And obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon Our Messenger is only [the duty of ] clear notification. (12) Allah - there is no deity except Him. And upon Allah let the believers rely. (13)

نـفسه ـــأنـفسكم ومن يـوق شح ه مـا اســتـطعــتم واسمعوا وأطـيعوا وأنفـقوا خـيرا ل ـقوا الـل فـاتـلحـون مـف ئك هم ال ـــأول (١٦)ف

So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah ]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful. (16)

حكـيم عزيـز ال ة ال هـاد ـيب والـش ـغ عـالم ال

ه شكـور حـلـيم كم والـل فر ل كم ويـغ ه قرضـا حســنـا يضـاعـفه ل (١٧)إن تـقرضوا الـل

(١٨)

If you loan Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you and forgive you. And Allah is Most Appreciative and Forbearing. (17)

Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (18)
