Welcome to the Qatar Business Events Guide, where you can find everything you need to know about Qatar’s business events infrastructure, from venues to tourist attractions to transportation options. Through the information, images, maps and contacts in this guide, it will become clear to you why Qatar is set to become a globally competitive destination for business events. An estimated 70% of Qatar’s visitors are business visitors, spurring the growth of the hospitality sector and attracting renowned hotel brands to the country, both exquisite luxury establishments and comfortable, affordable boutique hotels.

The rapid development of the business events industry includes an evolving exhibition business, which has grown by 40% in 2015, bringing to visitors the latest and best in everything from fashion and real estate to education and medicine. It also includes an active conferences and meetings portfolio, which saw 22 ICCA meetings come to Qatar in 2014, raising the country’s Asia Pacific and Middle East ranking in this area to 19th.

All indicators point to continued growth over the next five years, and at QTA we are maximising efforts to consistently support and cater to this growth.

From this launch pad, you can embark on a seamless event planning journey from anywhere in the world. Whatever your event needs, I trust you will find it here, and I look forward to welcoming you and your delegates to Qatar soon.

Ahmed AlObaidliDirector of Exhibitions, Qatar Tourism Authority

An InvitationWelcome Qatar has long-recognised that tourism is a crucial avenue for developing a sustainable non-hydrocarbon economy in Qatar and conveying Qatari culture to the world. With the launch of the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy in 2014, our efforts at Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) to diversify the tourism offering and secure a place for Qatar on the map of destinations have gained even more momentum.

Our strategy has set clear targets for 7 million tourists by 2030, and $10.7 billion in tourism spending. By then we are also aiming to increase tourism’s contribution to the national GDP by 2.3%.

We are confident that we are well on track, as international visits have increased by 91% since 2009, with an average annual growth rate of 13.8%, making Qatar one of the fastest growing destinations in the world. In 2015, Qatar was ranked as the second most competitive travel and tourism destination in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region in the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report. We scored highly on a supportive Business Environment (ranking 3rd globally), Safety and Security (2nd globally), Human Resources and Labour Market (14th globally), and Price Competitiveness (19th globally).

Our strategy places a strong emphasis on business events, especially with the Middle East forecast to become the second largest MICE hub in the world. The sector is growing at 16% in the Arab world, twice as fast as Europe or East Asia.

To that end, Qatar has invested heavily in infrastructural development that provides a major boost to the business events industry, such as the new state-of-the-art Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, the large number of 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels coming on-line and the 300 km Doha Metro project, all of which will substantially enhance Qatar’s ability to host world-class events.

In creating this Business Events Guide, our team has pooled their extensive knowledge, expertise and experience of hosting successful conferences and exhibitions in Qatar. Here you will find all the tools and information you need so that you, too, can bring your event to one of the most attractive destinations for business events in the world.

Trade has always been at the heart of Qatar’s economic life. For generations before the discovery of oil and gas, dhows set sail with their cargoes of pearls and other indigenous products, returning with foodstuffs, spices and building materials, and Qatar became one of the most important trading centres in the Arabian Gulf, a meeting place where merchants and seafarers came to buy and sell.

This trading tradition lives on today. In recent years, Qatar’s economic strength and dynamism, combined with its world-class infrastructure, facilities and services, have secured the country’s growing reputation as an international centre of excellence in the global business events sector.

Providing an ideal forum for buyers and sellers of products, services and technology to meet, network, exchange ideas and conduct business, exhibitions and conferences in Qatar offer an ideal platform for exploring both the outstanding opportunities in the national market and the exciting potential of the broader Gulf region and beyond.

Easily accessible from the main business centres of the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa and even the Americas and Australasia, Qatar’s strategic location and excellent aviation links make it a natural meeting point and ideal venue for hosting international business events.

Capitalising on this advantage, the government has invested in developing an unrivalled portfolio of state-of-the-art event facilities, notably Qatar National Convention Centre and the new Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, purpose-built to the highest international standards and capable of catering to the largest international conventions and exhibitions.

At the same time, public and private sector initiatives have created an exciting range of unique Qatari venues perfect for hosting innovative incentives. Equally important, Qatar boasts a comprehensive range of support services, including highly experienced professional destination management companies and event organisers.

But Qatar is more than just a thriving business centre. In recent years our country has emerged as a one of the region’s most rapidly developing leisure destinations as well.

Our hospitality industry ranks amongst the world’s best in terms of service and amenities and our cultural attractions, shopping, dining and recreational and sporting facilities are first class. So, whether seeking luxury, adventure or relaxation, delegates at events in Doha are sure to experience a truly memorable and enjoyable stay.

In short, events in Qatar offer the best of both worlds – great business opportunities and great leisure experiences. We look forward to welcoming you here very soon.

Freshly ground and flavoured with cardamom, the coffee is served from a characteristically shaped pot (called dallah) in tiny cups with no handles, which should be taken with the right hand. The server will continue to replenish the cup until you signal you have had enough by shaking it gently from side to side.

the region. Made from wood scented with fragrant oils, it

Dhows & Seafaring Qatar has always looked outward to the sea. For generations, fishing, pearl diving and trading provided a livelihood for much of the population. Traditional wooden dhows, largely unchanged in design over the years, symbolize this noble seafaring tradition and still ply Qatar’s waters today.

Pearl Diving

While no longer commercially viable

following the advent of the artificial variety, pearl diving and trading

was Qatar’s principal source of wealth before

the discovery of oil and gas. The waters

around the peninsula produced pearls of the

finest quality and the people of the coastal settlements became

adept at the arduous work of harvesting

the oyster shells from the seabed.

The seven-kilometre waterfront promenade and park circling Doha Bay offers great city views and is ideal for a jog in the cool of the morning or a relaxing evening stroll.

Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif offers visitors the vibrant atmosphere and colourful sights, sounds and aromas of a traditional Qatari market, as well as great bargains, restaurants and entertainment.

Museum of Islamic Art

The internationally renowned Museum of Islamic Art features some 14 centuries of the finest Islamic art and artefacts assembled from around the world.

The Pearl-Qatar

A spectacular man-made island with impressive marina esplanades, luxury towers and villas, high-end shops, hotels and fine dining.

Khor Al Adaid – the ‘Inland Sea’

A rare example of the sea encroaching deep into the heart of the desert, this tranquil expanse of water has no road access and can only be reached over the rolling sand dunes.

Al Zubarah

Desert AdventuresFor a heart-stopping roller coaster ride over the rolling dunes, try a 4x4 off-road safari. Or have a go at camel riding, sand boarding or driving a dune buggy. Daytime, evening and overnight camping trips can all be arranged. Several tour operators have Bedouin-style camps in the desert. Many safaris take in the spectacular ‘Inland Sea’ and the chance to enjoy glorious desert sunsets and moonlit barbeques.

Dhow CruisesExperience Qatar’s seafaring heritage cruising aboard a traditional wooden Arab dhow. Full-day, half-day and evening sightseeing excursions, including a meal, can be arranged via a hotel or through any of the leading local tour operators.

ShoppingDoha offers the visitor an unbeatable array of shopping options, from the elegant comfort of air-conditioned shopping malls to the lively bustle of the souqs.

Souq Waqif, with its maze of alleyways and traditional architecture, is more than just a fascinating sightseeing experience. It’s a great place for serious shoppers too, ideal for finding souvenirs and regional specialities. Popular purchases include: gold and jewellery, carpets, rugs and textiles; Bedouin weaving; Arabic coffee pots; antique silver; incense burners; prayer beads; inlaid boxes; miniature dhows; brass items; and regional art and handicrafts.

In contrast, the city’s many spacious modern malls offer comfort, elegance and a comprehensive array of shops and luxury brand outlets. Besides shopping, the larger malls have an extensive range of recreational facilities, including food courts, cinemas and ice rinks.

DiningQatar boasts a remarkable variety of dining possibilities. Many restaurants offer an authentic taste of Arabia and the Middle East, but all the major cuisines of the world are well represented. Options range from formal fine dining to relaxed fast food outlets and coffee shops.

Many top restaurants are to be found in Qatar’s hotels, as well as at The Pearl-Qatar, Souq Waqif and Katara cultural village, amongst numerous other culinary corners of the city.

Well-known international names include Gordon Ramsay, Alain Ducasse, Nobu, Jean-Georges and Antonio Carluccio, amongst others.

RelaxationBeach & Pool

Qatar is a great place to unwind in warm sunshine. Around the country’s coastline are many unspoiled tracts of clean sandy beach and Doha itself boasts the well-tended facilities of Katara’s public beach. For most visitors, the hotel pool – or, in some cases, private hotel beach - is likely to be the first port of call. All major hotels have well-appointed pool areas, often in stunning garden settings with comfortable seating, the perfect place to lie back and take a well-earned break.

Spas

For the ultimate way to unwind in luxury, nothing can beat the pampering on offer at Doha’s luxurious spas. These superb facilities, mostly located in major hotels or clubs, perfectly combine the highest standards of comfort, service and treatment from east and west. Many are operated by leading international spa operators, including Six Senses, Remede, Angsana and other top international names.

Sports & ExerciseParks

One of Doha’s defining features is the large number of green parks dotted around the city. These offer a welcome respite from the heat of the built-up areas and provide a vehicle-free recreational space for residents and visitors to enjoy, proving especially popular with joggers, cyclists and walkers. A string of such parks stretches along the Corniche waterfront, including the popular Museum of Islamic Art Park. Inland, the Aspire Park is notable for its lake and extensive facilities for exercise or relaxation.

Golf

Visiting golfers are welcome at Doha Golf Club, venue for the annual Commercial Bank Qatar Masters tournament, a ranking event on the European PGA Tour. In addition to the 7,312 yard, 18-hole championship course, the club has a floodlit nine-hole academy course and its facilities include several restaurants, lounges and conference rooms.

Water Sports, Diving & Fishing

Qatar’s climate, abundant marine life and crystal clear waters make it a perfect destination for water sport enthusiasts. Fishing trips can

be arranged and sailing, water skiing, canoeing, jet skiing and windsurfing are all available through beach clubs, resorts and hotels. Dive sites are easily accessible and include wreck, deep water and reef dives.

Other Sports

The extensive range of sports on offer in Qatar are likely to cover most of the interests and needs of incentive groups and events delegates. The Aspire Zone sports complex has facilities for multiple sporting activities, Lusail Shooting Club is popular with marksmen and Qatar Flying Club offers the chance to take to the skies in various light aircraft, gliders, ultralights, gyroplanes and microlights.

Doha also has an excellent range of indoor sporting activities, including squash, ten-pin bowling and swimming, while most leading hotels have their own in-house gyms and health clubs for their guests.

Spectator SportsQatar has successfully staged a number of major international sporting events, such as the 2006 Asian Games, 2011 AFC Asian Cup and 2015 Men’s World Handball Championships, amongst other world and regional tournaments.

In addition, Qatar hosts an annual calendar of events on the championship

circuits of their respective sports. These include: Commercial Bank Qatar Masters (golf), Qatar ExxonMobil Tennis Open, Tour of Qatar (cycling), Qatar International Rally (motor sport), Commercial Bank Grand Prix of Qatar (Moto GP), Qatar Total Tennis Open, F1H2O UIM World Championship (power boats) and the IAAF Diamond League (athletics).

For incentive organizsers, the idea of planning a visit to coincide with one (or more) of these events could be ideal for sports-oriented groups, a great way to combine some rest and recreation with the excitement of watching international stars compete at the highest level.

Business Event and Meeting Venues

Unique VenuesEvent planners face a constant challenge to find destinations that are new, unique and offer potential for creating an extra special experience for their delegates.

Welcome receptions may include traditional music and dance performances, the serving of Arabic coffee and the presentation of unique gifts, while gala dinners might feature Middle Eastern dishes and attractions such as henna painting, falconers with their birds, calligraphers and other activities unfamiliar to many overseas visitors.

Among the host of activities on offer, incentive programmes may feature a taste of Qatari heritage, for example by taking a sunset dinner cruise aboard a traditional wooden dhow or by venturing into the heart of the desert on safari. Besides fabulous views and an exhilarating ride over the dunes, the latter can be tailored to incorporate such experiences as sand boarding, camel riding, dune buggy driving, Bedouin-style barbeques and camping under the stars.

One area where Qatar really scores is in the range innovative indoor and outdoor venue options available to transform any incentive, social function or special event into a unique and inspiring occasion. These include the following.
