Johnny Carson (10/23/1925 –1/23/2005) was seen by morepeople on more occasions thananyone else in American history.Over the course of 30 years, 4,531episodes and 23,000 guests, hebecame a fixture of national life.

American Masters “Johnny Carson: King of Late Night” exploreshis life, career, complexities, and contradictions in a two-hour docu-mentary. 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of Carson taking over TheTonight Show from Jack Paar and the 20th anniversary of his retire-ment.

The film features 45 original interviews with Carson’s friends, family, and colleagues. Performers who appeared, or began theircareers, on The Tonight Show are also interviewed, including David

Johnny Carson: King of Late NightLetterman, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Romano, Drew Carey, GarryShandling, Steve Martin, Angie Dickinson, Ellen DeGeneres, CarlReiner, Don Rickles, Bob Newhart, and others.

Quite possibly the biggest star that television has ever produced,Carson commanded, at his peak, a nightly audience of 16 millionviewers—double the current audience of Leno and Letterman com-bined. Rarely giving interviews, Carson chose to remain a very pri-vate man whose public persona made him an American superstar. He once revealed, “I can get in front of an audience and be in con-trol. I suppose it’s manipulation. Offstage, I’m aloof because I’mnot very comfortable.” American Masters explores this dichotomyand enigma, unearthing clues about Carson’s childhood, early daysin the business, and personal and professional life.

American Masters “Johnny Carson: King of Late Night” airsMonday, May 14th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 27th at 10:00 p.m.

For the past five cen-turies, Western civiliza-tions have prevailedaround the world. Morepeople have been influ-enced by Western food, clothing, medicine, gov-ernment, and religionworldwide than by anyother civilization. Howdid that happen? Whatled the West to be so in-fluential and powerful? And how long will the West sustain its su-premacy?

Acclaimed historian Niall Ferguson takes a timely look at the reasonsbehind the West’s economic ascendancy and why Eastern civilizationsmay now be taking the lead, in Civilization: The West and the Rest.

Comparing civilizations ancient and modern, Ferguson takes viewerson a global expedition to 11 countries, from the Forbidden City in Beijingto Buckingham Palace in London, to trace one of mankind’s greatestachievements: the making of an empire.

The two-part, four-hour series explores the West’s epic and surpris-ing rise to global dominance. Applying essential economic and politicalinsights, Ferguson identifies what he calls “the six killer applications”that “the rest” lacked, but which enabled the West to become an eco-nomic and political superpower. However, no civilization lasts forever. And Ferguson speculates that perhaps “the rest” can overtake the Westby “downloading” and upgrading these “apps” too.

Each two-hour episode focuses on three of these factors: competi-tion; science; modern medicine; democracy; consumerism; and the (Prot-estant) work ethic. Spanning theories on the rise and fall of empires pastand present, Ferguson explains how the West taught others its ideas andinstitutions. And in so doing, the West may be endangering its power.

Civilization: The West and the Rest will be broadcast Tuesday, May22nd at 7:00 p.m. (Pt. 1) and Tuesday, May 29th at 7:00 p.m. (Pt. 2).

350 years ago two violinmakers from the same town, from the same block, made themost sought after violins everachieved. Everyone has heardof Antonio Stradivari, but fewhave heard of Guarneri del Gesu.Violin Masters: Two Gentlemenfrom Cremona tells the story ofthese two great men and whytoday their instruments areworth over $10 million a piece.

Violin Masters examines theamazing confluence of time and talent that occurred in the earlyyears of the 17th century when the two greatest violinmakersin history were working within steps of each other in the smallItalian town of Cremona. One—Antonio Stradivari—is a house-hold name; the other —Guarneri del Gesù—is considered a ge-nius equal in every way to Stradivari, yet most outside of themusic community have never heard of him. Why is that?

Eminent historians and experts weigh in on the differencesthat characterized the two artists, while ten of the world’s lead-ing violinists share what makes them fall in love with a particu-lar instrument.

Unlike other Renaissance masterworks, these 300-year oldCremonese instruments of immense value are not kept underglass in museums; they are at once works of art—and workingtools. And for all of our modern technology, they are tools wecannot equal for sound, depth, and color. Credit for that liesnot in arcane “secrets” of wood, varnish, beetles, or climate, but rather, in the hands and hearts of the men, AntonioStradivari and Guarneri del Gesù, sculptors of the world’s pur-est sound.

Violin Masters: Two Gentlemen from Cremona can be seenFriday, May 11th at 9:00 p.m.

Bones of Turkana follows paleoanthro-pologist Richard Leakey, his wife, Meave, daughter Louise, and the world-famous fos-sil-hunters of the Turkana Basin Institute ona recent dig along the shores of a mercuriallake. What emerges is both a portrait of a re-markable family and a dramatic tale of a placethat, impacted by momentous climate change, has never ceased being the cauldron of humanevolution.

While one of the Leakeys’ goals is todemonstrate the complexity and truth ofhuman evolution, they also seek to showhow the qualities that we proudly call hu-man were all born in Africa. The story thatemerges in the film is exciting, emotional, contemplative, occasionally funny and, inthe end, transforming.

Bones of Turkana will be broadcastWednesday, May 16th at 9:00 p.m.

Four string virtuosos—renowned cellistYo-Yo Ma, bluegrass fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer, and mandolin wizardChris Thile, each a prominent figure in hisown musical sphere—have come togetheras an ensemble to create what critics are nowhailing “a most remarkable and organiccross-genre project in which the fire and driveof the bluegrass world meets the clarity andclass of the classical music world.”

Goat Rodeo Live: Yo-Yo Ma, StuartDuncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile isan out-of-the-box experience that presentsan evening of music both vibrant and var-ied—composed and improvised, uptownand down home, funky and pastoral. Four

The Red Tail speaks to everyone strug-gling with the disastrous effects of economicglobalism. On August 19th, 2005, Roy Koch, along with 4,400 airline mechanics, custodi-ans, and cleaners, went on strike againstNorthwest Airlines, the fourth largest airlinein the world. Northwest, otherwise knownas “The Red Tail” by its employees, wantedto lay off 53% of their union workers andoutsource their jobs. What followed was a444-day strike that would end with 4,000union members out of work, including Roy.

Instead of being left in the wake of thisbattle, Roy and his daughter Melissa set outon a journey to meet the worker to whomRoy’s job was outsourced in China. Thejourney provided a renewed sense of pur-pose for Roy and for Melissa, who wantedto get answers to his plight.

The Red Tail interweaves Roy andMelissa’s search for connection in Chinawith the premeditated downfall of NorthwestAirlines. This downfall serves as a vibrantexample of the dangers of our current eco-nomic system, and casts a spotlight on thefuture of the working class.

The Red Tail can be seen Tuesday, May1st at 10:00 p.m.

What does it mean to lead men in war? What does it mean to come home— injuredphysically and psychologically—and builda life anew? As more and more veterans re-turn from deployment, these questions mustbe answered, not only by those who fought, but by their families, friends, and fellow citi-zens.

Nominated for an Academy Award forBest Documentary, “Hell and Back Again”on Independent Lens seamlessly transitionsfrom stunning war reportage to an intimate, visceral portrait of one man’s personalstruggle back home in North Carolina. There,Sergeant Nathan Harris confronts the physi-cal and emotional difficulties of readjustingto civilian life.

The story follows the U.S. Marines EchoCompany, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regi-ment, as they launch a major assault on aTaliban stronghold in Southern Afghani-stan. Within hours of being dropped deepbehind enemy lines, Sergeant Harris’s unitis attacked from all sides. Cut off and sur-rounded, the Marines fight a ghostlike en-emy and experience immense hostility fromdisplaced villagers.

The parallel story begins with SergeantHarris’s return home to his wife after he isseverely injured. He’s in terrible physicalpain and becomes dependent on his painmedication. But his psychological pain maybe worse, as he attempts to reconcile the gulfbetween his experiences at war and the re-turn to civilian life, one of a generation ofveterans struggling to find an identity in acountry that is often indifferent.

“Hell and Back Again” on IndependentLens airs on Memorial Day, Monday, May28th at 9:00 p.m.

virtuosos ignore genre restraints and takeviewers along on an inspiring journey that’sfull of exhilarating music that ranges frommeditative to mind-spinning.

The term “goat rodeo,” often applied toa chaotic situation, is a reference to the chal-lenges of melding classical and bluegrassmusic.

March Festival 2012Final Results In

The struggle goes on in 21st centuryLondon as the updated team of SherlockHolmes and Dr. Watson battle the worstthat modern criminality has to offer, in threethrilling new episodes of “Sherlock, Series2” on Masterpiece Mystery!

Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse) returns as the world’s foremost con-sulting detective, with Martin Freeman as the stalwart, if edgy, Dr. JohnWatson, and Andrew Scott as the unassuming mastermind of evil, JimMoriarty. Rupert Graves (The Forsyte Saga) returns as Inspector Lestrade, the man nominally in charge of crime solving in London.

Each of the three episodes—”Scandal in Belgravia,” “The Hounds of theBaskerville,” and “The Reichenbach Fall”— is pegged to a classic SherlockHolmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle—delightfully, weirdly, wittily, andbriskly updated, of course.

Masterpiece Mystery! “Sherlock, Series 2” airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m. be-ginning May 6th. The series repeats Fridays at 10:00 p.m. except for“Hounds of the Baskerville.”

Burt Bacharach & Hal David:The Library of CongressGershwin Prize for PopularSong In Performance at theWhite House features a star-studded tribute to the songwrit-ing team who penned such clas-

sic tunes as “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” “WhatThe World Needs Now is Love,” “I’ll Never Fall in LoveAgain,” “Walk on By,” and “Alfie.”

Composer Bacharach and lyricist David’s extraordinarycollaboration would net 70 top 40 hits. In recent years, they’ve enjoyed a resurgence in popularity with collabora-tions with Elvis Costello, releases on the soundtracks of allthree “Austin Powers” films and an episode of “Glee.”

Burt Bacharach & Hal David: The Library of CongressGershwin Prize for Popular Song In Performance at theWhite House airs Monday, May 21st at 8:00 p.m.

In San Antonio, Texas, Lisa and BrianSwitzer sell their house and risk their sav-ings on a “medical tourism” company thathas promised them an affordable solutionafter seven years of infertility. Across theworld in Mumbai, India, Aasia Khan puts ona burka to hide her identity from neighborsas she enters a fertility clinic to be implantedwith this American couple’s embryos.

These scenes unfold in Made in India, afilm that examines the human experiencesbehind “outsourcing” surrogate mothers.

“Reproductive tourism” has become abooming trade, valued at more than $450million in India, and it’s growing rapidly.Infertile couples in the U.S. pay up to$100,000 for a domestic surrogacy, but theycan pay for the same in India for roughly$25,000 (this includes clinic charges, lawyer’s bills, travel and lodging, and thesurrogate’s fee). But this growth is occur-ring within a complete legal vacuum: cur-rently, there are no actual laws on surrogacyin India—only suggested guidelines.

Made in India is the first feature documen-tary to show the personal stories of the realpeople involved—following their journeysthroughout the entire surrogacy process.

Aasia is a 27-year-old mother of threewho lives in a one-room house in a slum inMumbai. “I used to clean people’s homesbefore. I’m not educated. I don’t know howto read or write. So this is my life… I’m do-ing this for my children,” says Aasia.

Lisa and Brian see themselves as fight-ers: “In the U.S., if you’re struggling to havea child, you have to be a lawyer or a doctorto afford this. It’s not fair.” They believe hir-ing an Indian surrogate is their only chanceto have a child of their own, and they aresure that they will help Aasia just as shehelps them.

The film charts the obstacles faced by theU.S. couple and gives an intimate under-standing of the surrogate’s life story andmotivations. It reveals the legal and ethicalimplications behind their choices, and pre-sents the conflict between the personal andthe political dilemmas of international sur-rogacy.

Made in India can be seen Wednesday,May 30th at 9:00 p.m.

Loud bellowsring out from asmall pocket offorest surroundedby dense suburbsand busy roads inBrisbane, Austra-lia. It’s mating sea-son for koalas.Their thunderousroars are difficultto reconcile with the familiar perception ofthem as cuddly creatures. But it turns outtheir world is in fact far from cute and cud-dly. Rather it is filled with social pressure, con-flict, disease, and the external stresses of liv-ing amidst what amounts to an alien world.

Predominantly slow-moving, energy-conserving koalas are not exactly well-equipped to handle speeding traffic andpacks of dogs, or the consequences of en-croaching urbanization.

For a real change of pace, “Cracking theKoala Code” on Nature enters the world ofurban koalas trying to adapt to life in the fastlane. The film explores the day-to-day dra-mas of an extended family of koalas, seenthrough the eyes of the scientists studyingtheir every move and vocalization.

“Cracking the Koala Code” on Natureairs Wednesday, May 16th at 7:00 p.m. It re-peats Saturday, May 19th at 11:00 p.m. andSunday, May 20th at 7:00 p.m.

White lionsare among therarest animalsin the world.Rarer still istheir survivalin the wild.Their whitecolor stands out in Africa’s wild bush coun-try, increasing their risk of being targetedand killed by rival predators and maraudingadult male lions. Only three white cubs havereached adulthood in the wilds of SouthAfrica since white lions were first docu-mented there in 1975.

Now, two white cubs, sisters, have beatenthe odds, surviving all the challenges oftheir youth with the help of two remarkablelionesses—their mother, Matimba, and theiraunt, Khanya, a mother with two youngtawny cubs of her own. Without an adultmale lion to protect their small pride,Matimba and Khanya must rely solely ontheir own knowledge, strength, and courageto protect their family.

Nature “The White Lions” tracks thecubs and their mothers as they struggle tosurvive all the dangers they are faced within South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

“The White Lions” on Nature can be seenWednesday, May 9th at 7:00 p.m. It repeatsSaturday, May 12th at 11:00 p.m. and Sun-day, May 13th at 7:00 p.m.

How to Travelthe Worldfor FREEBetween 1914 and 1924, three famous

friends—prolific inventor Thomas Edison, pioneering auto-maker Henry Ford, best-selling nature writer John Burroughs, and tire manufacturer Harvey Firestone—traveled to the remote reaches ofFlorida’s Everglades in search of a rustic camping adventure far from the pres-sures of work and the press. Freed from the demands of daily life, the friends andtheir entourage enjoyed the serendipity of life on the road, stopping to help farm-ers in the field, examining streams for hydroelectric possibilities or engaging in animpromptu tree-chopping contest.

Their campfire camaraderie inspired a series of camping trips throughout theeastern United States. For 10 years, the celebrated friends enjoyed jaunts intothe wild, where the self-styled “vagabonds” could explore a changing Americaor, as Burroughs wrote, “cheerfully endure wet, cold, smoke, mosquitoes, blackflies, and sleepless nights—just to touch naked reality once more.”

Into the Wild: Edison, Ford & Friends features excerpts from the journals ofBurroughs and Firestone, offers insight into the famous friends and a rare glimpseof the men behind their public personas.

Into the Wild: Edison, Ford & Friends airs Friday, May 11th at 11:30 p.m. andrepeats Sunday, May 13th, 12:00 noon.

Both Dish Network and DirecTV Satellite services are now carrying KENW-TV inthe Albuquerque-Santa Fe Designated Market Area (DMA). This DMA includes allcounties in New Mexico except Roosevelt, Curry, Quay, Union, and Dona Ana. DirecTVis carrying the KENW-TV High Definition Channel (HD 3-1) and Standard Definition(SD 3-2). Dish is carrying only the KENW-TV Standard Definition (SD 3-2) Channel.

The Nielsen Company decides which counties go into the various DMAs. At thepresent time, there are 210 DMAs in the United States. In population size, theAlbuquerque-Santa Fe DMA is the 45th largest in the U.S. because it takes in most ofthe State of New Mexico. Nielsen determines the counties in a DMA by which televisionstations the viewers in that county are watching.

By Nielsen rules, DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers in Union, Quay, Curry, andRoosevelt counties will receive the Amarillo PBS station. In all other counties of NewMexico, except for Dona Ana, subscribers will receive PBS from KENW-TV (Portales)and KNME-TV (Albuquerque). Dona Ana is in the El Paso DMA, and those subscrib-ers will receive PBS from KRWG-TV (Las Cruces) and KCOS-TV (El Paso).

The KENW Online Auction is June 1st–10thScheduled for June 1st through June 10th, bidders all across the country can go to http://auction.kenw.org andbrowse among hundreds of items in this year’s online Auction for KENW-TV. As in the past, all monies raisedthrough the online Auction go towards programming at KENW-TV.

How do I participate? Go to the website and at the top of the page is a link to “register.” Type in your name, address, phone number(s) and choose your own password. Then you’re ready to have fun. If you registered lastyear, it’s not necessary to re-register, although you are encouraged to make sure all of your information is still correct.

The best part about the KENW online Auction is that you can visit the website anytime day or night, at your conve-nience. And, although we are raising money for the wonderful programming viewers enjoy on KENW-TV, we arenot interrupting your favorite show by airing the Auction “live.” It’s the best of both worlds! When you place a bid,you will be notified if you have been “outbid,” and you can then decide if you want to re-bid.

Can I do “reserve” bidding? You also have the option of putting in a “reserve” bid indicating how high you arewilling to bid on an item. The computer will then gradually increase your bid for you. When your top bid has beenreached, you will be notified via e-mail so you can decide if you want to continue bidding. If no one bids against you, your bids will not go higher. It’s so easy, and you’re not tied to the computer all day.

What if I don’t have internet service? This year we are providing a catalog of the auction items, and it’s avail-able for a $2.00 mailing fee, which will be deducted from your auction invoice. You can check on the items you areinterested in, then call KENW, and we will input your bids for you. This way EVERYONE can participate in theonline auction. Orders for the catalogs are being taken now – call!

Can I donate something? You bet – we are listing items every day. If you want to contribute something, contactSheryl Borden at 1-888-367-5369 (toll-free) or locally at 575-562-2112 or e-mail her at: [email protected]

Can I be an Auction Sponsor? For as little as $200, your business will be seen by millions of people as they visitthe auction website. We also provide a link from our website to your website. It’s a win/win for everyone. Plus, your logo and advertising is “up” for an entire year – not just the days of the auction. This year, sponsors and donors(above $500) will be listed on the KENW website (www.kenw.org) under Business Friends and this, too, willremain up for an entire year!
