The industry for office and administrative workers kicks off 2013 with a slightly lower confidence level than it did compared to 2012, but this reading could reflect overall economic uncertainty around sequestration, federal spending cuts, rising gas prices, and payroll taxes, as well as never-ending budget talks on Capitol Hill.
In fact, according to the most recent jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the professional and business services industry added 73,000 jobs in April and has added 587,000 jobs over the past year. These positive numbers translate to a promising hiring market for office and administrative professionals. According to an April 2013 Wanted Analytics report, “administrative assistant” was the fourth most commonly advertised job title and “executive assistant” landed on the list for the first time, coming in at number 32.
Our Randstad Office and Administrative Employee Confidence Index, a measure of overall confidence among U.S. office and administrative workers, decreased slightly in the first quarter of 2013, falling one third of a percentage point to 51.3.
In this quarter’s survey, we barely saw any change in confidence levels among job workers regarding their ability to find jobs, their intent to job search, and their optimism about the future of their employers. Also, when you look at year-over-year trends, overall sentiment among workers remains about the same compared to this time last year.
Rapid advancements in technology are quickly changing the industry for office and administrative professionals. The International Association of Administrative Professionals highlights five trends in office technology that are creating an entirely new business environment, including: collaboration (such as social apps for work and web conferencing), cloud computing, mobility (such as virtual offices), ubiquitous IT, and big data.
In order for office and administrative professionals to stay abreast of this quickly evolving work environment, employees must constantly invest in their own future by taking advantage of training opportunities – and companies, in turn, should readily provide them.

About four million workers in the United States fell under the category of “secretaries and administrative assistants” between 2006 and 2010, and 96 percent of them were women, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Administrative assistant could very well continue to be the top job for women in 2020. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the category will grow about 12 percent between 2010 and 2020, adding nearly 493,000 jobs during this decade.

This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of Randstad from January 14-16, February 11-13, and March 5-7 2013, among 3,631 adults ages 18 and older of which 433 are employed in office and administrative positions.

Three key indices are measured: the Office and Administrative Job Security Index, which captures how likely respondents think it is that they will lose their job or that their job will be eliminated in the next 12 months;

Methodology
the Office and Administrative Job Transition Index, which captures how likely respondents are to look for a new job in the next 12 months; and the Employee Confidence Index that measures employees’ overall confidence in the economy, their employer, and their ability to find other employment.
The Employee Confidence Index is calculated from the results of four components that reflect these aspects of employee confidence. For each component item a ‘score’ is calculated by taking the difference of the percentage of positive responses and the percentage of negative responses. These four scores are then averaged to indicate an overall level of employee confidence and is then scaled from 0 (no confidence) to 100 (complete confidence). A reading above 50 indicates a positive confidence level.
