Thousands of tradesmen are to get free asbestos awareness training in a bid to tackle ignorance about Britain’s biggest industrial killer.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in partnership with industry, set a poignant target of 4000 hours of face-to-face training to be donated during September – one hour for each life lost to asbestos related illnesses in an average year. A target for a further 4000 hours of online training was also set.

But thanks to an overwhelming response from training companies, the target has been smashed by almost/more than 50 per cent – and almost/more than 4,000 at risk tradesmen will now be able to take up the oer of free training

7987 hours of classroom training have been oered up along with 5570 web-based hours.

The free training is available throughout October and November and is aimed at those most likely to disturb the asbestos bres as they go about their work – tradesmen such as joiners, electricians and plumbers , around 20 of whom lose their lives to asbestos-related diseases every week.

The asbestos training pledge initiative is part of HSE’s Hidden Killer campaign to raise awareness that asbestos is not just an historical problem – around half a million non-domestic premises still contain it.

Said Karen Clayton, HSE’s director for long latency health risks:

“This training will save lives by helping to tackle ignorance about the risks posed by working with asbestos. It will help prevent this hidden killer from claiming another generation of British tradesmen.

“The response has been overwhelming and has completely exceeded our expectations. There’s been a real groundswell of support from a whole range of training providers.

The Joint Union Asbestos Committee (JUAC) calls for a national audit of asbestos in school buildings after gures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) showed that of the small number of academies inspected approximately 60% had enforcement action taken against them for failing to adequately manage the asbestos in their buildings. Government estimates are that 75% of all UK schools have buildings that comprise asbestos containing materials. JUAC Chair, Julie Winn, today said:“Figures from the HSE suggest that there is a signicant problem of asbestos management in schools. Of the relatively small sample of non-local authority schools inspected by HSE approximately 60% of the academies, 32% of the independent fee paying schools and 22% of the non-local authority schools had enforcement action taken against them. We simply do not know the true extent of the problem; this could just be the tip of the iceberg. “The Government accepts the recommendation from the James Review of Capital Spending for there to be a national collection of data on the

condition of all school buildings in the UK. JUAC believes it is vital that this includes an audit of the extent and type and condition of the asbestos in UK school buildings. "JUAC agrees with the HSE's recent conclusion that raising awareness around asbestos produces benets to dutyholders and workers is in fact a key component in the AiS* and JUAC campaign. Raising awareness and improved training in the management of asbestos is fundamental to health and safety in UK schools containing asbestos. However for the HSE to suggest that most schools have adequate arrangements in place for managing asbestos in the absence of a national collection of data on the condition of all school buildings which includes an audit of the extent, type and condition of the asbestos within them, is like saying what you don't know can't hurt you."

Redondo Beach, CA … October 26, 2011 — The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO,) which combines education, advocacy, and community to provide a unied voice for asbestos victims, today announced that ADAO Co-Founder and President, Linda Reinstein, has been chosen to present at two premier upcoming events focused on public health and advocacy. Ms. Reinstein regularly speaks at such events to help educate the public about the need for an asbestos ban and promote recognition of medical resources, while building a broad-based community of support and comfort. The two events include the American Public Health Association (APHA)’s 139th Annual Meeting and Exposition October 29 – November 2 and the Canadian Workers Health and Safety Centre (WHSC)’s annual gala on November 4. Ms. Reinstein will present the latest ndings on educa-tional asbestos awareness and ban eorts across the globe, while highlighting the power of social media as a force behind unication and worldwide connections that showcase the power of knowledge. The American Public Health Association is the oldest and most diverse organization of public health professionals in the world and has been working to improve public health since 1872. The annual exposition will bring together thousands of national and international physicians, administrators, nurses, educators, researchers, epidemiologists, and related health specialists to address current and emerging health science, policy, and practice issues with the goal of preventing diseases and promoting health. This year, APHA will focus on how social media technology has dramatically improved avenues for the distribution of information to the masses, and how these tools are critical to share with the world’s most inuential players in public health. For more than 25 years, the Workers Health & Safety Centre has supported the eorts of workplace representatives in their pursuit of hazard-free workplaces. In conjunction with the WHSC award dinner,

ADAO will attend several meetings in Toronto early next month, in eorts to solidify and strengthen bonds with Canadian counterparts. Starting with collaborations between Canadian organizations years back and most recently highlighted by the powerful events in Sarnia, ADAO recognizes how North American collaboration against the asbestos industry is gaining momentum and growing every day. ADAO President and Co-Founder, Linda Reinstein commented on the events: “ADAO is thrilled and privileged to be invited to WHSC’s award dinner and recognizes the importance of continued strong relationships in Canada. Likewise, APHA is setting new standards of excellence for public health and justice and we are honored to be a part of their annual conference. Just imagine what we can do when we join forces. Together, with a united voice, we can make a dierence.”Asbestos is a known human carcinogen and exposure can cause asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Studies estimate that during the next decade, 107,000 workers around the world will die every year of an asbestos related disease – equaling 300 deaths per day. Despite the known dangers, according to a recently released report from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), imports of asbestos into this country remain strong. The report states, “the United States imported an estimated 820 metric tons of asbestos through July 2010. Roong products were estimated to account for about 72% of U.S. asbestos consumption. The US imports 90% of asbestos from Canada and 10% from Brazil.” This rate, although in decline due to recognized health and liability issues associated with asbestos, is unacceptable, particularly when numerous substitutes exist.http://www.asbestosdiseaseawareness.org/

Construction faces worst decline for more than 30 years

Construction activity is unlikely to return to growth until 2014, sparking the worst decline for 30 years, according to the latest Construction Industry Forecasts.

Since the start of the economic downturn in 2007 more than £32bn of construction activity has been lost.

Michael Ankers CPA chief said: "Although government is committed to cut capital expenditure by 20 per cent over the next four years, the hoped for robust recovery from the private sector, to compensate for these cuts, is not materialising.

"With both the commercial and housing sectors still performing badly, our latest forecasts indicate that construction output will fall by more than one per cent this year, a further 3.6% next year and no growth in 2013. Recovery nally arrives in 2014, but by then we will have experienced the worst decline in construction activity for more than 30 years. It is essential that more is done by government to kick start the economic recovery.

"Despite the government's desire to support housing recovery, housing starts in 2012 will be the second lowest year since 1945. Private sector housing is slowly recovering. Unfortunately public sector housing starts are forecast to fall by a third, leading to an overall reduction in the total number of housing starts in 2011 and 2012. By the end of the forecast period we will have a shortfall of more than two million homes in the UK.

"Government recognises that construction is a key part of economic recovery, yet these forecasts herald a very dicult few years, not just for construction but for the wider economy.

"It is therefore essential that the government uses the Autumn Statement to stimulate recovery by rebalancing the economy between current and capital spending. Government's own gures show current expenditure rising from £632bn this year to £694bn in 2014/15, whilst capital expenditure is cut from £61bn to £42bn over the same period. Rebalancing this could make way for the £5bn package of essential infrastructure investment that many commentators have called for.

"Similarly government must do more to stimulate house building and help rst-time buyers onto the housing ladder. The announcement about the release of public sector land is welcome, but it is access to nance, not development that is currently holding back the housing market. Government therefore needs to look at mortgage indemnity guarantee schemes, or government backed savings scheme for rst-time buyers to help ease this situation.

"Finally the government must do more to support the Green Deal programme. The stimulus to the economy and the benets to our industry could be huge. However, without a scal stimulus, such as a reduction to ve per cent in VAT for all Green Deal compliant work, Green Deal is unlikely to be successful. It is essential the Chancellor uses the Autumn Statement to address these issues as without these stimuli, the next few years will be very bleak indeed for the UK economy.'
