MOMENT FOR REFLECTIONWelcome to the worship of God on this beautiful day that God has made. Today we ask the question, “What is the kingdom of God?” What did this phrase mean in the ancient world, and how can we understand the spirit of its meaning today? Perhaps you have heard your ministers at times refer to the kin-dom of God rather than the more traditional phrase. The term

“kingdom of God” was a subversive idea in its time because the kingdom of Caesar was the only lawful (aka legitimate) realm. The kingdom of God therefore upheld values that were in direct opposition to those of the kingdom of Caesar. The true spirit of this is now often misunderstood, and so we now can learn from liberationist interpretations of scripture to help live into the ethos of the kin-dom of God in our time. We also celebrate the deep kinship we know between one another in God as we share communion this morning. Welcome to worship!

One: We gather now at the table of Christ, seeking mercy, forgiveness, joy and peace. We remember that this is his table, and so we say, Come from the north and come from the south, come from the east and come from the west. Come regardless of age or race or sex or creed or orientation or identity. Come not because you must, but because you may.

Many: Come because it is our Lord’s table, and he bids us come.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION (RESPONSIvELY)One: We remember that on the night He was betrayed, Jesus sat at table with His disciples, and when they had eaten, He took the bread, and He blessed it and broke it, and He gave it to them saying,

Many: “Take and eat. This is my body, broken for you. Eat of this bread as often as you will, and remember me.”

One: After they had shared the bread, he took a cup, and he blessed it, and he gave thanks to God, and he poured it out for them and said,

Many: “This is the cup of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Whenever you drink of it, remember me.”

Walk our Spiritual paths togetherMorning offering

Each week at Hancock we accept an offering of gifts for two purposes:

Mission Partner of the Week: Each Sunday we accept gifts for one of our mission partners, a select organization doing God’s work in the world. Many are local or regional organizations whom we’ve worked with for years; all are effective organizations making a difference in people’s lives. These donations are passed directly to the organization and are in addition to the donations included in Hancock’s budget.

Sustaining Hancock’s Vision: Gifts are also welcome in the Sunday offering plate for Hancock Church that supports our staff, our building, community outreach and all of the worship and programs at Hancock.

You may make a gift for either in one of three ways:

• Through our website. Go to www.hancockchurch.org, click on the Give button in the upper right, and follow the instructions to make a gift by credit or debit card or ACH bank transfer. Be sure to indicate in the dropdown menu whether the gift is for “Mission Partner” or

“Hancock Church.”

• Send a check. Make it payable to Hancock UCC, and note on the memo line either “Mission Partner” or “Hancock.” Our address is 1912 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington MA 02421.

• Text to give. From your smart phone or tablet, text the dollar amount along with "Mission" or “Hancock” to 781-386-0866 and tap the link to enter your credit card information.

Upcoming offerings: June 13: Rev. June R. Cooper Justice Center at City Mission June 20: Rise Above

Hello Hancock community!

My name is Bridget Kinahan and I am spending this summer learning from you as a student minister. I am writing to let you know that I identify as nonbinary and use they/them/theirs pronouns. Feel free to ask me questions about what this means, and if anything feels too invasive I will respectfully let you know! I recognize that this may be a new concept for some of you, so please know that I am patient and will not be offended if you struggle with using my pronouns. I have included some helpful articles below that briefly introduce what being nonbinary means, and how to use they/them/theirs pronouns. Thank you for reading, and I can't wait to get to know you and learn from your vibrant community this summer!

The Flower ministry is one of Hancock's most beloved traditions! One church member delivers flowers to another to brighten their day. We are seeking flower delivery volunteers for the summer. This would involve coming to the church on Thursday to pick up the worship flowers, then delivering them to either one or two recipients (you do not have to deliver them the same day). The flowers will already be ready to go in vases, so very little rearranging will be necessary. If we can get 11 volunteers, that would cover the flowers until September. If you're interested in delivering flowers, please contact Jane, [email protected], and she can provide more details.

Dear Hancock family,

Happy (almost) summer! I hope you and yours are enjoying longer days and more sunshine. Here at the church the staff are enjoying being together again. Now that we are all vaccinated, and are healthy enough to be together in person, for the first time since March of 2020, it really does feel like we are beginning to emerge. We hope that those who are comfortable will join us for in person outdoor worship on

Sunday mornings beginning June 20th at 10 am. We will of course still be offering our virtual worship simultaneously at 10 am as well.

The next two Sundays, June 6 and 13, you will notice that more people will join us in the sanctuary for our virtual worship experience. This Sunday, the choir will sing live and in real time in worship for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. They will wear masks while they sing. The following Sunday we will gladly welcome the choir, as well as the bell ringers, into the sanctuary for our annual bell Sunday. Both the choir and the bell ringers will be masked while in the sanctuary. We are grateful for the leadership of Mark and Marilyn who are helping us navigate how to resume making music together as safely as possible as we continue to move forward. We are also grateful to the bells and the choir for their hard work, and for being willing to try new things during this most unusual time. We are excited that they will be in person with us for worship soon!

We will also hold a memorial service for Peggy Bicknell on Wednesday June 16th in the sanctuary. Our Covid protocols have evolved to reflect the current realities of the virus, but we will still require masks and only one singer is currently permitted to sing. Peggy’s memorial service will air on our YouTube channel at 7PM on Wednesday June 16th. More information about this will be shared closer to the date.

We will continue to keep you apprised of all that is happening in the building, especially as much has changed quite quickly. Please reach out to me, or our moderators, Joan Rutila and David Zenk, with any questions.

Grace & Peace,

Barbara

sponsored by the Anti-Racism Steering Team

Join us on Sunday, June 20, for an after-church Zoom presentation on Voter Suppression by Professor Rachael Cobb, Associate Professor & Chair of Political Science & Legal Studies at Suffolk University (and a Lexington resident). She will talk about what voter suppression is, why it's become such an issue of concern right now (especially for its potential to disenfranchise targeted groups, in particular, persons of color), and what we at Hancock (individually and as a group) can do to help address this immediate threat to our democracy. This is part of a developing program of events offered by the Anti-Racism Team. Mark your calendars now; Zoom link to follow.

We welcome all who seek to know God.

We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ.

We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences.

We recognize and love each individual as a child of God.

We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental

ability to join us on our journey of faith.

The faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed,

for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity.

As Paul wrote in Galatians, “In Christ there is no longer Jew or Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one...”
